Ahhh Hitchcock = perfection. Superb script. Sir Humphrey Pengallion is absolutely magnificent
Edge of the seat thriller, typical Hitchcock direction. What a movie from nearly a century ago!
All the places exist in real life around Bodmin Moor. I took the book with me on a cycling tour and visited the places mentioned- including having lunch at the Jamaica Inn itself. I enjoyed both the book and my holiday.
Your experience sounds wonderful!
Jamaica Inn is excellent time capsule about a shady seaside hotel full of cut throats in the late 19th century. I love the score, I love films that are largely set at night-time, I love Hitchcock,
1819 is actually the early 19th century.
@kjkjkj360 This is set in 1819, so, the EARLY 19th century.
I love Hitchcock's movies myself. Never disappointing!
NOT on the seaside; it's on Bodmin Moor.
Exactly!Seaside hotel indeed😂
Daphne Du Maurier - Jamaica Tavern. A gorgeous novel from your favorite writer. The movie is stunningly good
Love this film! Charles Laughton‘s performance is incredible the way he develops his character over the course of the film. It supposed to be a B grade movie, I think it’s top notch.
Never seen Robert Newton so young, and without his trademark Long John Silver accent. It was his portrayal of that character in Disney's 1950 version of "Treasure Island" that set the standard for what pirates are supposed to sound like. Also, Leslie Banks is totally unrecognizable from when he played the suave, aristocratic hunter in "The Most Dangerous Game."
Charles Lawton was superb.
What a larger than life performance. His character reminds me of the Baron Harkonnen character from Dune. Funny, insane and very evil.
Maureen O'Hara really shined as well.
Excellent movie just like all the other movies directed by Alfred Hitchcock....worth watching and watching again
Name is enough real good
Charles Laughton steel's the show absolutely charismatic hilarious and charming at the same time.
you cannot go wrong with Laughton ...
Agreed! But for her first big movie, Maureen was fantastic too!
He also STEALS the show as well!
Definitely! Mr. Laughton is great! I really liked Maureen O'Hara and Robert Newton together as well! Mr. Newton is one of my favorites. If you've seen him in "Obsession", you'll see why. And Ms O'Hara is so beautiful here, as she always is!
Maureen O'Hara was lovely but a tiny bit ham she got better with the more films she appeared in
The dress ripping would have been pretty salacious back in 1939. Still works even today.
49:43 "I must treat this affair private" was my favorite line. Maureen O'Hara, Robert Newton, Charles Laughton and others that was a great cast.
Gentlemen... I think I must look into this matter private
This is a great movie packed with adventure, Charles Laughton delivered in a big way. Thanks, CCC!
Love it 💕 my favourite Hitchcock, plenty of brooding atmosphere, Laughton was be a real actor.
I have this on dvd! A really great film start to finish!
This film could have been called The Astonishing Eyebrows.
Newton and Laughton and O'Hara at their finest.
It looks like they rolled up a hank of hair and glued it on! I also suspect that was a prosthetic nose.
))))
Maureen O'Hara....What a jewel!
2 great masters ,one a superb film producerand the other,a great writerwith a vivid imagination. Alfred Hitchcock .Daphne du Maurier
Looking forward to this, one of my favourite Hitchcock's.
Watching all that spray in the shipwreck reminds me of my grandson helping me water my tomato plants.
Lol! Good one!

Is like a vodevill
Brilliant.

I didn't know this one. Thanks for uploading. Love Hitchcock's movies. Need more of them on my Classic Movies' Collection.
My favourite book of all time as well as 'Rebecca'.....First read when I was 13 and still re-read over the years and now I'm nearly 60! ❤😂

Newton should have had the part of the inn keeper ! He would have really shined. That tiny part was an insult.Spoke to soon his parts a little bigger than I presumed. Fantastic character !

George Brown, production assistant, arranged a sneak marriage to Maureen O'Hara without her knowledge or permission. She was to leave for the USA with Charles Laughton later that day, so he took her to a priest who quickly married them. The marriage was never consummated. It was later annulled in 1941. Laughton saw potential in her and cast her in this film, then arranged for her trip. The rest is history.
Didn't she notice that a priest was marrying them?

41:37 Love this scene in the cave, feels very much ahead of its time
Tem vários sem legenda pra gente vê!! Conseguiu ver alguns legendados!!! Tem como ver isso?
Loads of fun chucking buckets of water over those blokes who were pretending to be on a ship in a storm.
Why don’t the sub titles match the actual dialogue?
Well, Daphne was a marvelous writer...

Mi- a plăcut !
Mulțumesc frumos !❤
The true hero in this film is her travel chest
Excellent movie❤
I can't hear Laughton without thinking of Tony Hancock's impression of him.
I'm going have a look at that...
Imagine this in colour with O'Hara's red hair, she was a beauty.
Excellent movie!
Très bon film, merci beaucoup
Great story
The Inn is worth a visit.
Film completely different than the book! The book is much better.
They were forced to make changes in the original script of this film due to strict censors.
Old movie but well done❤🎉🎉
Assistindo em Curitiba, like e inscrito !
Bellísimo film
Hermosa película ❤
Masterpiece of Hitccock's
Who are the subtitles for? Americanism's co-joined with metric measurements . Absolutely puzzling.
Maureen is a class A Beauty
Bardzo dziękuję za możliwość obejrzenia z napisami❤❤❤❤
"Chaaaadwiiiiick" - a great ending as Chadwick hears his master's call
And the head shake that went along with it.
You're probably not aware of it but the sound system it's barely working. I'll hardly can hear anything. Sadly Making it very unpleasant to watch without being able to hear.
Thank you for letting let us. We will go over it and see what's going on. Cheers!
Saundan: Don't worry Malla. I know just why you're calling. You're wondering when that shaggy carpet you ordered will arrive at your home.🤣
Classic
classic
I feel that the original novel by Daphne Du Maurier was better, the suspense was maintained till the end, & there was a twist in the story that has been missed. Hitchcock has also deviated from the original plot a lot, unlike in Rebecca, which, too was the work of Daphne Du Maurier.
Agreed. Book is better
That was more the fault of Laughton, who, as you can see, wanted to take up as much screentime as humanly possible.
Yes true, laughton took the screen time in many movies that he was in...
I understood the fanatics in this story with the pirates, thieves, and murderers at either a hotel or tavern. The protagonist woman gave this movie flair with her standard behavior. The side-kick actor kept his balance with this young lady, but all in all, it was mostly a pirate movie. 21-147 Egbert v. Boule (06/08/2022)
I had a cat named Chadwick who responded when Laughton yelled his name!
❣️
All the great British actors of yester year 😢
Why did they tie the officer Up and didnt shoot him right away?
And, done. Won't be watching this a 2nd time.
LOVE THE GAG IN GIRLS MOUTH
This is a great film of its time and good to see it again. Shame about the ludicrous sub titles. "Sesibilities" becomes "Smart" etc
❤❤❤
A good movie and worth watching, but it is not Jamaica Inn. The story is completely different from the book, as are the characters.
Decent Hitchcock flick 👍
💚le noir et blanc est sublime👌
Well I have no idea who Laughton is, but I'm gna watch it.
Just don't go for a chocolate sandwich at his house.
