Edge of the seat thriller, typical Hitchcock direction. What a movie from nearly a century ago!

All the places exist in real life around Bodmin Moor. I took the book with me on a cycling tour and visited the places mentioned- including having lunch at the Jamaica Inn itself. I enjoyed both the book and my holiday.

Jamaica Inn is excellent time capsule about a shady seaside hotel full of cut throats in the late 19th century. I love the score, I love films that are largely set at night-time, I love Hitchcock,

Love this film! Charles Laughton‘s performance is incredible the way he develops his character over the course of the film. It supposed to be a B grade movie, I think it’s top notch.

Never seen Robert Newton so young, and without his trademark Long John Silver accent. It was his portrayal of that character in Disney's 1950 version of "Treasure Island" that set the standard for what pirates are supposed to sound like. Also, Leslie Banks is totally unrecognizable from when he played the suave, aristocratic hunter in "The Most Dangerous Game."

    Charles Lawton was superb.
What a larger than life performance. His character reminds me of the Baron Harkonnen character from Dune. Funny, insane and very evil.
Maureen O'Hara really shined as well.

As narrativas de Hitchcock são impressionantes, prende a atenção, são frenéticas. Delícia poder assistir um filme de 1939 tão agradável, poder, de alguma forma, entender o que estava sendo feito e assistido há 80 anos.

George Brown, production assistant, arranged a sneak marriage to Maureen O'Hara without her knowledge or permission. She was to leave for the USA with Charles Laughton later that day, so he took her to a priest who quickly married them. The marriage was never consummated. It was later annulled in 1941. Laughton saw potential in her and cast her in this film, then arranged for her trip. The rest is history.

I feel that the original novel by Daphne Du Maurier was better, the suspense was maintained till the end, & there was a twist in the story that has been missed. Hitchcock has also deviated from the original plot a lot, unlike in Rebecca, which, too was the work of Daphne Du Maurier.

I understood the fanatics in this story with the pirates, thieves, and murderers at either a hotel or tavern. The protagonist woman gave this movie flair with her standard behavior. The side-kick actor kept his balance with this young lady, but all in all, it was mostly a pirate movie. 21-147 Egbert v. Boule (06/08/2022)
