Upon seeing this in the full livestream, I downloaded Obsidian and immediately started using it. Nearly a year on, I’m so grateful I did. Hundreds of notes of everything, from schoolwork to Bible study to philosophy. I’m so grateful to have discovered Obsidian!
I downloaded obsidian last week because of hearing the full length interview... I have started cataloguing my books to get started. It's interesting to see the links starting to appear already.
@@chervon5773 at the moment I'm writing down the title, author (so it can link to all their other notes) and the main topics of the book etc. I also add topic tags to the books so I can see links between books on similar topics. Because I'm new to it I'm just working away adding a couple of books a day... which in itself is a nice exercise because it's a good excuse to revisit things and flesh out thoughts and feedback I've had since I last read the book.
This program looks amazing. As a historian I have also collected what must be thousands of text files on all kinds of different topics, and like Jeff Cavins I am almost constantly taking notes on my phone whenever I hear something that piques my interest, makes me think, or sparks a new idea or insight. Obsidian seems like it would be enormously helpful in organizing the ideas one has developed over the years. I'm going to give it a try.
It's a good system but not a magic bullet. You can end up spending more time tinkering with the system than with the ideas themselves. I think it's worth it for some people, but it's not an easy fix that solves all your problems. It also starts to become a chore like a diet that you try to force yourself into. I recommend using it casually for a while, don't come up with elaborate systems that end up being a chore.
I understand Matt's concerns about relying too much on technology and fully share it. But this is one of the areas where the good that technology can do for human life is very powerful. In any case, index cards are also technology, just somewhat more primitive. I've been using Obsidian ever since I saw this episode, and I must say it's exactly what I've been looking for (notion and evernote were nice, but somehow I didn't feel full ownership). As a developer I also absolutely love that Obsidian is entirely hackable for nearly any purpose you can imagine.
YES!! obsidian, nvultra, roam research!!! note taking software to build your zettelkasten that lets you link all your thinking!! i hope i can find more by cavins on this. ❤️
He made an episode on his podcast called “Knowledge Hoarding and the Solution” (I think it’s called). I am looking forward to him talking about it too, and I hope he’ll show some examples of notes.
I recommend How to Take Smart Notes by Sönke Ahrens for anyone who wants to learn about the Zettelkasten method. It takes some time to get used to but it’s worth it.
Thanks for this comment. I purchased the book because of your recommendation. I'm halfway through the it and it makes the system more "tangible", if that's the right word. I can see how it's actually done. Before the book I started using Obsidian and it ended up being like a physical notebook. Zettlekasten seems quite different. I actually need work hard at the moment against writing everything down, actually copying everything down verbatim.
Hey Matt, I hope you are doing well! I came across on the internet about some revelations from Our Lord to Luz de Maria. The revelations are quite alarming. Take a chance to look at it if you want. Is this something to worry about or be concerned? Or is it some hoax?
HALLELUJAH THANK YOU JESUS CHRIST our HOLY LORD GOD ALMIGHTY KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS that if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with your heart you believe and are justified, and with your mouth you confess and are saved. ~ Romans 10:9-10 ✝

How do you catalogue your books? Do you just write down the main ideas of a book on a note?

@@haraldwolte3745 You can't link effectively without developing an understanding of the ideas.
Obsidian is an awesome program. I’ve been using it for months. Lots of tutorials online to help because it can be overwhelming.
Obsidian is an amazing tool. Glad to see it getting some recognition.
LOVE Obsidian! And I agree with everything he's saying about the benefits of it.
I use Obsidian too! It is by far the best note taking app I’ve ever used.
I just nerded out over this. 😊

4:31 is the start of a good discussion. your point is lost though to this speaker who then puts forth some words that contrast what was said to him.
