Been in the business 30 years, Fantastic idea, You would think by now flooring manufacturers would come up with some kind of spline application, appreciate all the content keep doing what you do
I'm just a hack, no professional experience, but to turn my tongue and grove around, I just found a masonite panel with the same thickness as the tongue, cut it twice the width of the tongue and glued it into the grove of the piece I was turning. Turns a board into a double tongued board. They should just make these.
^^ This is the solution, It literally says to do this on the box. “I’d the joint becomes damaged or you need to change directions use PVA glue” And PVA glue is listed in the “tools” section for that reason. Great idea using the tape!
How would you do the same for a situation where the already laid floor is perpendicular to the opening and you want to run the next room in the other direction? Namely a "T" joint. I guess the real question is how would you cut the plank ends to be even with the new full length piece? and then do the glue trick.
The only question I would have is wood glue sets up very hard and rigid. That laminate is going to have a little spring in it when you walk across. I know from my experience with hardwood floors and wood glue I have not had very good luck in traffic areas. Usually just makes a cracking sound walking across it until it all breaks up. would almost think the cool glide would be just enough to hold that all together. Never done this with laminate but have done it with LVP a couple times and works great. Another good trick to have an installer’s bag. Love your commitment to helping other installers to become better keep up the good work.
Thanks for your help My laminate floor was just installed Unfortunately, they put it in the wrong direction . Hopefully they can reverse this Please let me know what you think
Hat if, after removing the tongues and making sure the seam looks ok, I glue the whole plank to the floor? I have wood floor. Would that be a bad idea? I know it goes against the “floating”‘concept of floating floor but… any thoughts?
@@FloorsbySouthernboys Well, I have already tried doing that and, for me, it seems more difficult getting it to click together than doing it the standard way. Also, I'm leery of smacking the female side with the tapping block...seems to slip/slide off more and makes me think I'm going to break it. Am I missing something?
@@joebloe5336 with vinyl plank it’s all about getting the proper angle on the board you are trying to connect, rather it be up or down once you get the angle right and figured out it will click in really easily and that goes for all vinyl plank that I’ve ever dealt with, if you’re working at frontwards or backwards either way it’s still has to have the proper angle so just keep trying my friend is all I can say
I think I seen that done a few time. Good job. Two reasons I do not use wood glue, but I use super glue. One, is the wood glue might bake and loose strength when running the kool glide over it. The other reason is, wood glue might and can get down on the kool glide tape and cause it to fail. With super glue you do not have the mess, it sets up fast. and that holds the boards level and tight. I know you were filming, but so it can be a one person job I kneel on the board when doing it.
I am not going to lie. The seam looks darker. I dont know if it is because we know you switched it. Or if it looks better in person. But, i can see a darker line then the rest of them. But i like the concept of switching it. Comes in handy
Just curious, isn't it easier and quicker to just continue installing the boards backwards? I mean me personally I can install laminate or lvt just was efficient either way.
I need to change directions like this going into a concrete floor room I was thinking about doing the same thing but using an adhesive to glue to the concrete subfloor?? What do you think?
@@FloorsbySouthernboys Thanks for the quick response. The manufacturer says it does not back lay so I guess I will turn it. I do not want the transitions.
@@FloorsbySouthernboys I thought I would try that first with some scrap cut-offs and then turn it if it is too hard. It is click and go flooring, so it seems like it would.
@@gusgelpi3722 Yeah if there is any problems with that it will be with the end joints definitely not the traditional side joints, so I would practice with a few full boards
Most people would face nail it after ripping the groove off. I see nothing wrong with trying this method instead so as not to have to hide nail holes.if it ever fails I can just face nail and do it the hard way.If it stays good then this is indeed a better method. Thank you for sharing.
One advise same idea as you did but instead butting against with just glue cut a groove on both jointing edge and use ca glue to glue a mdf spline 1/4 inch , second advise if you have a biscuit jointer then cut slots and glue them with biscuits, that way it ensures there will be no snapping when the floor expands , because mdf has shrinkage rating not sure the number but there is
This type of flooring is meant to be installed in a particular direction. If you have multiple rooms and do not want to use transitions, you may need to install an area of the floor in the opposite direction than what you did initially. So, if you reverse one row of the flooring, you can simply resume laying the floor in the proper direction in the new room (properly inserting the "male" end of the plank into the "female" end instead of the opposite
If we did this method we would get thrown off the job site. Creative way to go about it though. On our side of the world we are obligated to break each room and join with a cover strip. Easy to change direction then. Our environments are not climate controlled and subject to variable expansion from one room to the next.
Flooring Africa Gotcha, I install whole house as of this stuff with no transition strips except for when it joins ceramic tile or carpet, I never break it in doorways to turn it around
You are cutting the door jamb. The door assemble is support by the jamb, therefore what is supporting the door unit after the jambs are completely cut?
If you're a hack, then I'm a hack. I'm going to use you're method. It would be nice if the manufacturer could sell a router bit to match the groove profile

Yes, why don't the manufactures make reverse planks that have double tongue? It is a very common need.
Because they want us to waste as much as possible

No, its a floating floor.
Did you reverse the laminate to be able to work from the other side of it? Or is there another reason? The floor looks great BTW.
