- On the 10th anniversary of the last Champ Car race, four drivers from that 2008 event in Long Beach--Will Power, Oriol Servia, Paul Tracy, and Jimmy Vasser--sat down with Marshall Pruett to discuss the final battle before the series merged with IndyCar, Danica Patrick's win on the same weekend in Japan, and how the modern Verizon IndyCar Series is taking a page from open-wheel racing's past.
Directed & Edited by Travis Long
Produced by Marshall Pruett
This should have lasted at least an hour. Nothing better than CART/ChampCar veterans telling stories about the greatest series ever.
Francesco Satta Maybe we'll get a Marshall Pruett Podcast with the full length unedited conversation.
The "greatest series ever" royally ran itself into the ground
The on track product was stellar, the management not so much
Francesco Satta Tony George and USAC drove a wedge into the success of CART at that time. I hate to say this but AJ Foyt helped CART go down as well with Guiding Tony George into creating the IRL with the horrible 25/8 rule. Also Brain France from NASCAR along with Bernie from F1. Thank god they got their heads straight and have a ONE positive open wheel racing series in America.
Underbird [former X8X8] if Tony George and CART owners could have gotten along things might be very different and better than they are now but things could have been a lot worse today but thankfully things are starting to turn the right corner for INDYCAR.
I saw Cart races from 1996 until 2000 in my home town, Rio de janeiro. Great races. Great drivers. Diferent chassis and engines. Great times and great memories. O miss those good days.
Nice to see a fellow brazilian here. I never had a chance to watch a CART race at Jacarepaguá but that drew me to the series in the late 90s, used to stay up at 11 PM on sunday night because lots of races were tape delayed, still remember watching De Ferran winning the championship in 2000.
I was very upset when the series ended, wasn't a fan of the type of racing provided by the IRL but the writing was on the wall since at least 2002 when Penske left (maybe earlier when teams like Ganassi went back to running the Indy 500), CART/CC was the better series but the IRL had THE race.
But today, like PT said at the end, I'm glad I can see the CART of the 90s on modern day Indycar, I have really enjoyed it since the introduction of the DW12, a starking contrast compared to my opinion of the "Crapwagon". Competitive racing, multiple cars with a shot at winning, just like how american open wheel racing should be.
Those were the best years
My favourite oval track ever! So unique with no banking and 2 completely different types of turns.
Hearing what Oriol said about the DP01, man. Thanks, Oriol, thanks everybody. Thanks Marshall for getting those AWESOME people together. CART rocks, ChampCar rocks!

Mr Pruett, the next time you have Mr. Miller on could you do a retrospective on the 2008 merger, perhaps a behinds the scenes look and when he found out about it and what was going on in each paddock?
Thanks for your work
Amazing machines, I wish that IndyCar used ChampCar equipment after the merger
Quiet Gamer That Panoz was an amazing chassis. I remember watching CCWS drivers in those Crapwagons after the merger and thought, what a waste
@@csfarrand that equipment that IndyCar brought was absolutely horrible. I refused to go to LB and finally went back when IndyCar brought the new dallara chassis
Did Paul Tracy forget that he ran Long Beach in 2011?
Yes, and I did as well until it was too late.
I'm surprised Danica didn't crash the last 5 minutes of this video to talk about her Motegi win while the thing I was trying to watch is in a small box in the corner of the screen.
Somebody needs to correct PT that he DID race Long Beach again in 2011. lol
And Champ car had 2 ovals, Milwaukee and Vegas
David Land is here
on fuel mileage of course
Champcar had no ovals in 2007.
Thanks Marshall! Man I miss CART/Champ Car. The aesthetics as well as the heavenly sounds these cars made were intoxicating! True open wheel beasts.
This is so much better that the indycar we have now. Those champcars look so better than 2018 indycars . To have a standing start then was just amazing . seriously speaking champ cars was americas formula 1 . i love those cars .
Glad that current Indycar is basically Champcar 2.0. With all of the technological innovations, turbocharged engines, beautiful cars, and star drivers, Champcar lives on
What a profoundly awesome vid. I would have paid $1000 just to be in the room. Sure miss Champcar days.
The champ car years were great. Many happy memories !
Loved it Marshall. I really liked CC, the cars the sound the drivers. Really sad it folded.
Joe Brown Me too!
I could have watched an hour of this easy.
Unlike most, I miss 2000's AOWR. Just becasue it was a unique time when we could watch like 30 races a year.
CART was so cool too, it's a shame that they veered away from Ovals once it became Champ Car.

What happened 10 years later:
1 of them becoming a team owner
1 of them becoming a commentator
1 of them becoming a safety car driver
and 1 of them becoming IndyCar and Indy 500 champion

IMO, CART/ChampCar is still the greatest racing series of all time. PT was my hero growing up. and the DP01 was, hands down, the sexiest racecar ever built.
Thanks. This is great. I really enjoyed this video. Any chance you could talk to Tracy, Bourdais, Vasser about any of their old races or championships? Or talk to Will about his first year with Penske - how he got in the team and how that progressed. Anyway, I subscribed.
Wow, thanks for doing this video Marshall! I think a lot of people forget how cool that last Champcar was.
Champ car was by far the best open wheel series in the World miss seeing them at Surfers Paradise
Great stuff Pruett! Man those last Champ Cars were beautiful - such a contrast to the crapwagons in IRL.... Things are looking good for Indycar for the first time in a long time!
I really miss this racing series 😢
this needs to be a podcast episode, i remember watching that long beach grand prix with my father and we were sad after the race
Need more! So cool hearing them talk about it. Guess I’ll be rewatching that race tonight!
I loved this interview! Unique content! Awesome. I love all this guys with you, true race drivers!
Thanks a million Tony George!! grrrrr
supersevenn Thank god he doesn’t have his hands in INDYCAR anymore. Like one Servià said INDYCAR he feels is just starting to get were CART/ChampCar was a little bit. INDYCAR needs to get better marketing and the tv should help a lot. NASCAR would not have gotten to were it was if it wasn’t for the split in 1996.
Sadly, I don't think we have seen the last of that idiot.
Mario Ramirez well all he is now is a figure head of Hulman&Company and doesn’t have any real power in the sport. That is Mark Miles and he is the best thing that has happened to INDYCAR since the days of CART. There still is a ways to go to get INDYCAR up but all Tony George did was spend a lot of his family’s money and his sisters and others removed him from his position as IMS president and head of INDYCAR then. Thank God for that. All you will see of him is with his team that Ed Carpentier drives for his stepson or giving the command at the INDY 500 like his mother did. Tony George is still going to be around but not involved with INDYCAR anymore.
I'd thank him not sarcastically, because without that, American Open Wheel Racing would still be a pile of mess. Great racing and machines were sacrificed, albeit for stability and a platform the rekindle the fire and passion which made the 1980s Open Wheel years so special.
I miss this series so much. I felt in love with it around 2002-2003. IRL is garbage!
such a beautiful car .such a shame it didn't last longer
This should be the video that's #1 on the YT Trending Page.
Standing starts (and on-board starters!). What a concept...
Will - its taken 10 years to "kind of get close" to the DP-01's.
Translation - 10 years and No where F*king near the DP-01!!
We have almost the same level of horsepower and aero now. I think tire technology has advanced so much that it would be hard to come close to that balance again.
I was there, it was the last "Indycar Race" that I went to. I miss the V8s, miss the smell, and miss the atmosphere. Something is different now. The racing is getting better and the cars look awesome, but something is missing.
TheUsmc1488 I was there too and went back today after 10 years.
It’s still the engines probably I have never been to an INDYCAR race but those watching races in the 90s those engines were loud and fast.
rob mush exactly so.
rob mush I agree, the way those turbo V8s launched themselves off the corners were insane! Especially the 1000 hp multi engine, chassis, and tire days!
Wonderful retrospective. Thank you, Marshall Pruett. One question, though. With your being under the weather, when and where did you record this?
Man that was simply fun to watch... Yes Indycar is headed back that direction and it is doing better because of it. Turns out the fans know what they like. I do like that here is a few ovals in the mix too. I think bring the hp up by about 200, put Watkins Glen and Seca back on the schedule and maybe a few international tracks and it becomes the best series in the world..
Could've watched much more of this. Wish the video was longer :]
And how awesome did those cars look!?
god i miss the way champ car used to sound!
Bring back Champ car, it rocked!
Still would take the Panoz DP01, or even the Lola B02/00 and the V8 turbos over the modern day Dallara DW and V6 turbo config. Even though the old Champ Cars were muffled by turbos, they still sounded awesome. So much cooler, visceral, and interesting car than anything the Tony George and Penske owned era IndyCar have ran. Funny to think... hearing Paul Tracy talk about the potential for growth near the end of the video, and we now see IndyCar kind of stuck in neutral ever since Penske took over the series.
Champ Car and ALMS! The best ever in America!
For whatever reason, I kind of shrug when people say F1 needs to sound like it did in the V10 era (I guess because my first memories of it are from the 1.5L turbo era in the '80s, so the 3.5L era to me just sounds like the FIA murdering Group C in hopes of getting more engines into F1). But I would give anything to have Indy cars sound like this again.
I think these champ car look a bit like an early 2000,s F1 BAR Honda. It Was a good looking champ car.
DP01, so much nicer than any of the Indy cars.
I miss the champcars they my favourite motorsports but im really happy that the Australian (from my country) will power won the last race and the 2008 championship
Why black and white? Also, good discussion, wish to have more.
Great video! Can you put some of the materials left out of the video on your podcast?
Those cars were great
Indycar today needs more oval
I was there in 2008, and today, 10 years after. I went back to Long beach. The "new" car made me go back, still not as nice as the DP01 or the cars CART/CC had, but definitely a step in the right direction.
its just new aero underneath the body work its the same, like how a 68 car and 69 are the same but different body work so all the parts still fit but not on a 71
I know, that's why I called it "new" car
Nice job, MP. Keep feeling better and LMK if you need a fill in 😉
Bring back standing start for 2021/2022 @ indycar
They should Bring it Back,But Like F1 System
Hey @Marshal Pruett What do you think about the idea for a replacement series for Champ Car ?
I'm pretty sure PT raced in Long Beach in 2010 or 2011 with Dragon.
he's allowed to forget some things about his career i think
Long Beach yesss
A very sad day for American racing. It has taken nearly 30 years for Indycar to regain some of it's former stature.
If Tony George never created the IRL, none of this would be happening.
If CART management wasn't retarded, none of this would have happened either.
True, CART as spectacular as it got to be, it had pretty poor management and arrogance.
Mario Ramirez Andrew Graig and Tony George were also young at that time as well and both had egos as big as the state of Indiana and Michigan. USAC can be part of the blame as well to me since that is what the original IRL was all about bringing in their midget drivers and stoping them from going into NASCAR but then TG let NASCAR in 1994. However that race sucks and is the prefect description of Tony George’s legacy along with the USGP at Indy as well which got him kicked out of his positions in 2009.
Falling Pictures Productions Andrew Graig to blame for CART and the team owners for the flop of THE US 500 in May 1996 on the same day of INDY 500 just to flex their muscles but should have been at INDY in 1996.
Well, the 25/8 rule didn't help either.
Great video MP
Cosworth V8 turbo...
Great video
i guess paul forgot racing at long beach in 2011 lol
Will Power!!!!!!
Wonder what they did with these cars?

I miss CART/ChampCar. IndyCar 2018 is becoming IndyCar 1995 because IndyCar 1995 was so much better than anything the IRL ever did. Wasted years and wasted Indy 500's. All thanks to Clabber Boy himself, Tony George...
I know his mom Mari just died and no disrespect to her but she and her family made a mistake giving her son Tony George the power and money of IMS in 1989. If he had not received that position things might be better in INDYCAR. She should have put a stop to the 25/8 rule. It almost killed of their race that they make the most money on.
A shame that the ESPN coverage was one of the worst television broadcasts of all time. I wish Helio had won that Motegi race, then it would have been a tribute to the series Tony destroyed.
Tooooooooooooooooooooooooo short!!!!!
What’s the obsession with road and street courses
