Roger Penske shaking the pitboard he was leaning over from excitement during the last caution of the 1994 Indianapolis 500. It's the greatest racing there is.
What's interesting about Roger is he'll run any manufacturer that gives him the best chance at winning, never is he married to one partner and has run everything from Chevy, Ford, Dodge, Pontiac, Porsche, Mercedes, Acura, Honda and probably a few others over the decades.
Penske tried F1 in the 70's, Mark Donahue won a race and later was killed. Roger likes to make his racing pay its own way. F1 budgets don't make sense to his way of racing. Plus F1 was where he lost his "brother" and I think that really effected Roger. Plus, it is a European operation and he likes to stay close to home
People outside of the US ,and even some in it, don't understand Penskes personal and corporate worth . If they went to F1 they would be the biggest non manufacturer team outside of RBR . Eclipsing both mclaren and aston martin f1 . His lack of interest in F1 is not resources . Having said that given the new cost restrictions , growth in revenue and team earnings he could take a look at F1 again in the future now its not the senseless loss making money pit it once was.
"I wish I knew you existed earlier: we already have our line-up for next year..." That's what Roger Penske said to "Gonchi" Rodríguez, after the Detroit CART GP in 1999. He finished in 12th place (scoring a point) being an absolute rookie [yep... It was literally his first CART Grand Prix ever], and made a great, great impression in Penske. Since Castroneves and Gil de Ferran were confirmed for 2000, "Gonchi" had to make the most out of his chance. He shone, so he was given another drive: Laguna Seca... As a side note, do watch Gonchi, the documentary about his life and career, if you want. It has [DVDRip?] subtitles in English, so it's translated perfectly. If you watch it, then you'll see why Roger Penske himself was taken aback by a man from a small country that's not produced many international drivers.
Well the line up for the 2000 was Greg Moore and Gil de Ferran, but after the tragedy in Fontana, Helio Castroneves replace Greg Moore, Gonchi Rodriguez was supposed to be in Patrick Racing in the #20, but...........

Wow, how did you tell the Penske story and hardly mention Mark Donohue and his leading role in the development of Penske Racing from 1966 till 1975 unfortunate F1 accident. This/his part of Penske Racing covered racing Cobra's, Camaro's, 512M, 917Turbo , Indy and F1.

A very neat application of the rules. However to call him the smartest guy in the world is pushing it way too far. He needed U.K. manufacturing expertise and German financing. If he was that clever, it would all have been done in house. as to the engine being banned, typical North American petulance. Penske is like Morgan Freeman. He has been 70 years old for several decades and theorists agree he may continue to be 70 years old for centuries.
👍
I wish this spoke about his participation in the Can-Am series in the late '60s early '70s .
Some of the best racing ever.
