Love that The Secret History made an appearance-such a classic! I didn’t read it until after The Goldfinch, and I couldn’t believe it had been out there so long, waiting to be discovered.
Our book club read East of Eden many years ago 👍and followed it up with The Bad Seed by William March. I’m sure you can make the connection between the two. 😂
So glad Apartment made someone’s list! I haven’t seen it talked about and it’s a favourite of mine. Oh nice I have I Hold A Wife but haven’t gotten to it yet. Exciting. Ooo lots of great picks. Love it.
I'm so envious of your hardcover of The Secret History! I think second printing before publication means it is the second printing of the first edition!
Yeah I decided to pick up Fake Accounts because you spoke so highly about it, but the book was really disappointing to me. It's an Essay style book and I thought that the different subjects she touched upon lead nowhere. And sometimes I thought "Why I are you even bringing this up? What does this have to do with the story??" I also didn't like the protagonist. It's very obvious that Oyler is the main character herself and made me not like her. She seems like a very annoying millennial.
I've never heard of The Apartment but that cover is !!!!!! I think I'm going to make East of Eden a goal for next year. I'm already attempting A Suitable Boy and Middlemarch this year, so not sure I could handle another chunk classic but have been wanting to read it for ages!
omg apartment by teddy wayne!! a friend and i buddy read it together last year and it ended up on both our favourites lists + was one of my favourite reading experiences !! so excited to see it on your list :D
That was great. I read A Swim in the Pond on your recommendation and was not disappointed! It’s caused me to think about all writing in a new way, including my own. I think much of what he said applies equally to novels. I’m constantly on the lookout for escalation now. And putting things in my “basket“ that I expect the writer to resolve lol. Also, love love to hear a shout out to Secret History. I always identify that as my favorite book though I doubt that’s really true anymore. Maybe time for a re-read to see.
You mention MFA reads and after finding you on goodreads I couldn't help but notice how many Iowa writers workshop reads you'd read. We love to see it! 💛
I still haven't read the Secret History, and it has been on my shelves for years. I think the main reason is it was randomly given to me and not a book I picked out. Need to get it on a TBR soon. Just found your channel and look forward to more videos.
I'm late to the party with this channel, only just subscribed. I've been developing my summer reading list with the help of your recent blogs, and I share some all time favourites here. Thank you!
Glad I found your channel. We have very similar tastes!!

The only requirement for The Secret History buddy read is full commitment to wearing a sweater vest anytime we talk about it
