One hundred years of solitude is one of my favourites too ! It is a sort of mystical journey that you get trapped in, a malediction , an infernal cycle
Infinite gratitude for this landing in my suggested videos. Your vibe and taste is ✨perfection✨ Now I’m watching your backlist and it feels like I’ve discovered a new favorite tv show that already had multiple, amazing seasons & I’m so excited for it. Thank you 💕
First time watching your channel and was wondering “what if she discusses East of Eden for the classics?? That would be epic of her” And when you started talking about it I was like YES!!!! Because I’ve read it twice and it’s a favorite of mine too! You have taste
1: “The Final Theory: Rethinking Our Scientific Legacy “, Mark McCutcheon. 2: “The Unique and Its Property “, Max Stirner/ Landstreicher. 3: “The Bible Came from Arabia “, Kamal Salibi plus his 3 other bible study books. 4: “No Treason: the Constitution of no Authority “, 1,2, and 6, Lysander Spooner.
Particularly loved your memoir choices - that Murakami book is only one of his I haven’t felt like throwing out the window at some point during the reading experience. Also highly recommend ‘M Train’ by Patti Smith.
I watch booktubers mostly for updates on news in the industry. Don't really find recommended channels with the same book taste as me. And then you showed up! Love the recommendations!
It's my first time watching you, Ana and am so glad I stumbled onto your channel. I subscribed immediately because we had the same literary taste. :) anyway, I totally agree with your sentiments about historical fiction being the kind of genre that many readers do not explore that much. That's why it makes me jump for joy whenever I get to meet a reader who loves historical fiction, memoirs, and classics. Greetings from the Philippines! :)
Hello to you!! Would love to get to the Philippines one day. Historical fiction is amazing. I think it’s so important to take a very human stance on the past. Makes it so comprehensible!
you are the blueprint for cool favorites and i envy your taste Ana !! I am FINALLY going to read classic krak on my vacation and i'm looking forward to it even more now
okay, I'm obsessed with you. I share 12 of your favourite books, but seeing jon krakauer sealed the deal omg. im so glad this came up in my suggested videos
You have such an eclectic taste! I love it, I always treasure nonfiction and memoir recommendations. I'll definitely check out the Cockroaches and Sedaris book, even though the first one sounds like such a difficult read. Thank you :)
Great video! So glad I found your channel! Excellent taste for books, East of Eden and 100 years of solitude are on my top ten favourites, and of course One flew over the cuckoo’s nest !
So glad the algorithm suggested your channel, Ana! The Pisces was weird and fantastic; loved The Secret History, and craving a reread; definitely adding One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest to my TBR. ~ Mari
Really enjoyed this Ana, the algorithm has produced ha! One Hundred Years of Solitude is one of my favourite all time reads. If you've not read Wuthering Heights or the picture of Dorian Grey they might be up your street! I recently read Stasiland which you might like, a non fiction about life in East Germany, that was really good too
Oh wow! Love some historical novels. It does sound like something I’d like. Also, The Picture of Dorian Grey is one of my best friend’s favorites, so I gotta jump on it!!! Thanks for being here 😀
In gonna pick up east of Eden after your loving words! My favorite lit fic is The Wall by Marlen Haushofer, very compelling and so beautifully written. Feminist, Nature, Solitude, loving animals, survival. What does it mean to be a woman when there are no other people around, no family no society to act the female role to. Daily survival life in Austrian mountains by planting beans, caring for animals, milking the cow, living with the seasons. Translated from german, published in 1963. And rereleased in English this year. Read it almost in 1 day so great for a reading Slump. A bit like Bear but no men and no sex
Wow, I think you just described my ideal novel. That sounds amazing. I've already looked it up and the rereleased edition cover is iconic, too. I hope you love EOE! I think about it almost daily.
@@AnaWallaceJohnson yes the cover with the cow is amazing! ( The cow is the book is such a sweetheart) I almost ordered it because it is so cool but I already have a beautiful Dutch copy and I dont need it! The penguin Vintage earth series edition is very cute as well. I mostly buy my books second hand from charity shops but I bought 'Disruption' on your recommendation because the stories sound so interesting but the vibrant colours of the cover art pushed me over the edge!
i knew we were vibing when you said “Theft by Finding” and “East of Eden” are some of your faves. same, same. but than you said THE PISCES! my absolute favorite book, love it.
I'm so glad you said The Beach, I've had this on my shelf since the beginning of the pandemic and have never gotten around to it. I have a beautiful version of it too 🫶🏼
Hello Ana, first time watching your video and absolutely loved it , thank you for sharing your favorites , added some to my list as well I absolutely love memoirs and Murakami and also John, can't wait to read those
I think I could appreciate his writing before, but nothing really enraptured me like EOE. Everyone says Cannery Row is fantastic. I'll keep my eyes out for a good used copy, so we'll see when it lands in my lap!
Your fellow booktuber CarolynMarieReads is (at the time of writing) due to make a video about great books whose film adaptations are equally good, so I wonder if she'll pick One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. (She has already made videos about books she thinks are better than their movie adaptations and vice-versa.)
I love that concept so much and have thought about doing something similar. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest adaptation is one of my favorites of all time!
interesting selection. You seem to like the "cool" classics, the rebels. For me it has to be, Lord of the Rings, Mika the Finn, Love for Lydia, The Thomas Covenant Chronicles, Eugene Onegin, Fathers and Sons, Solaris, Joesph Andrews, Sir Gawaine and the Green Knight, Five Little Pigs, and since I'm from New Zealand I'd better throw in one of our greats...Man Alone.
Omg so glad the algorithm recommended this video! I am still in high school and yet to get into historical fiction, so I’m very keen to check out devil in the white city. Thank you for some amazing recs 💋💋💋
You are wonderful (& the FP knit is equally *chef's kiss*) and this was the perfect video to watch with that first coffee. I need to pick up Murakami's memoir soon, I'm in need of some motivation and it sounds just perfect for that. Theft by Finding makes me sooo emotional, I still have a quarter of it to go, but reading about his beginnings and hardships and path and just the ordinariness of it all is so inspiring, also I genuinely gasped when I got to his entry about meeting Hugh for the first time lol and just the way he wrote about the most random people he heard on the street or on the radio is an art in itself. While reading it, I keep telling myself to give the ol' diary another go, if only to just jot down all these random bits of life that don't even have much to do or at all with yourself, but that make it so special. Will you read his second diary volume? Also, once again, if you ever feel like it, I would love a video on theatre/plays from you, I really enjoy the way you discuss them and appreciate your insight :) ok, have a great beautiful week :)
GOOD eye on the FP! Murakami will absolutely motivate you (though, have I actually gotten up at 5am like I told myself I would? no hehe) TBF is one of the best encouragements of embracing the little things. Of course, Sedaris is hilarious, but he brings up amazing points of poignancy and truth. I cried many times during that read & will absolutely pick up his second diary volume (though I am not sure it will top his first volume). Thanks for the reminder on the play collection--I'll figure a way to implement it into one of my vids!
Coming in very late ! but I've been really busy lately and I'm planning my vacation as you know. I'm looking for the French version of Cockroaches and it's not easy to find, but her other books are. I have another non fiction about Rwanda that looks really good. It's in English (written by a French author too I think). I hope to read it soon to talk about it and tell you about it. David Sedaris : I'm planning to buy his books while I'm on vacation ! Hope to find them at a good price. And of course Ken Kesey's book, I love it so much. One of the most beautiful prose I've ever seen ! Love that we share the same love for this book :-) I read it while on vacation in Montreal. It's so gorgeous !!! I've finally read Jon Kakrauer's book about the Everest, loved it too ! I almost gave away twice The Devil in the white city but I've heard about the film adaptation (or series ?) so I'm glad to have kept it !!! Please if you love this book, read The Five by Hallie Rubenhold - it's so good (historical and gives you the real facts about Jack The Ripper's victims and it shows London as I've never seen it before). I should definitely shoot the same video :-) As for the play, please read A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry. I've finally bought The Idiot and want to read it. So I should take it for the travel ?
Totally take it on vacation!! It makes you feel like travel is a wonderfully disguised bit of confusion that we should all enjoy!! Definitely keep Devil in the White City! Though, I’ve been hearing a rumor of an adaptation for years, so we’ll see… Have fun on your vacay!
@@AnaWallaceJohnson thanks ! hope you enjoy your trip ! Ok I will. A friend of mine has also offered me a book to read on the plane (from Singapore) but I want to take 3 books, so I'll bring the Idiot with me. Have fun ! 😄
I recently published two books titled “Meditation and Spirituality a Philosophy” and “Spiritual Encounters”. Finishing my third book “Social Pandemic”. In case you want to try them if they sound interesting to you
This is the first video I've seen from you (just popped up on RUclips for me), and of course with a name like Wallace Johnson, I have to ask - have you read The Feather Thief by Kirk Wallace Johnson? Especially since you love nonfiction, this book is *incredible*! It's part detective story, part heist thriller, part history lesson, part investigative journalism... it's easily one of the best books I've ever read, and I'm not even too keen on nonfiction. Basic synopsis: a young flautist steals exotic, rare bird feathers from a British history museum with the intention of selling them on the black fly-tying market in order to buy a golden flute. It's really a wild ride.
have you by any chance read the chronology of water by lidia yuknavitch? your listing of ken kesey + your love of memoirs just reminded of it, bc if im remembering right she mentions being mentored by him !! (i havent personally read cuckoo's nest yet but she's penned a beautiful memoir imo)
oh wow, no I haven't read, but a quick google shows me Kristin Stewart is adapting it onto screen (directorial debut!). If I come across it in my travels, I'd definitely be keen to pick it up! Thank you!
omg yes I LOVED norwegian wood and I have 3 more of his books on my shelf and I keep wondering why I dont pick them up: im so scared they won’t live up since NW is nothing like what he usually writes
Mauler and Questus by english writer Shawn Williamson. Indicated by historian, writer and cinema director Andrew Sinclair. Mauler is compared with White Fang by Jack London.
murakami was one of my best friends professors in 2010 and he said in one of her seminars that what i talk about when i talk about running was his favorite out of his own books that he had ever written until that point :)
!!! I love to hear that. It's such a personal book. Not only for Murakami, but for the reader. I feel like it's my story and I imagine others feel the same
“one flew over the cuckoo's nest” was a great movie; I watched it a while ago, but didn’t know it was based on a book when I watched it. Now I am debating whether to read the book now, because it will be in reverse order. I am usually a “book first” kinda person 🤣. Btw just found your channel. I am glad. 😊
One of the best movies of all time! Could watch it on repeat. The movie definitely strays from the novel a bit (most notably narration), but the experiencing of both mediums is highly encouraged! Thank you for being here!!!
@@AnaWallaceJohnson okay but I think I should make us a pie, we should have some tea, don a couple of preppy sweaters and do a vid about this book, and I'm not at all kidding
already had art sex music in my tbr without knowing it was by THE miss cosey - dont know how i didnt connect that, only recognized her from first name (chris & cosey) and didnt know she wrote, have to read it now
😂… your videos are always fun … thank you … check out Telling Tales an anthology of one act plays edited by Eric Lane … Also, I heard Sarah Kane’s plays are pretty intense…I’d like to read Sam Shepard’s plays at a certain point … & of course I loved Beckett’s End Game … Right now on the fiction front I’m reading East of Eden, Gone Girl, & The Natural.
I also enjoyed, if you can enjoy a book about a real serial killer and his murders, Devil in the White City. I think we have the idea that serial killers are a modern invention but they aren't and this guy was scary.
Yeah! I absolutely can. For me, when I wanted to get back into reading, I picked a book I was 100% intrigued by. No matter if it was heralded as a great book, classic, best seller, etc. If you read based on other people’s opinions, you’ll never feel fulfilled by your own experience. I say choose a book about a topic you already love and want to learn more about. It always works for me.
@@AnaWallaceJohnson I agree, I recently started reading the Game of thrones book 1, and after few days finished over 500 pages of it. It was surprising to me that I have finished reading so many pages. It is wonderful to read when I am fully interested in the book. Thanks for the inspiration.
great !!!......about the book by Cosey Fanni Tutti.....a Rachelle on goodreads wrote "Lived it like a rebel, wrote it like a shopping list. " how about a one-line zinger of a response to that comment.....maybe ?...................thank you....great video..........
I've seen it pop up a bit lately in the space and I'm happy it's getting the recognition it deserves!! I think it's what reading and education is all about
One Hundred Years, etc. tough read, but well worth it.... One Flew, etc. is great, isn't it? Written from an American Indian's perspective. A perspective the movie abandons. Oh, well... Ken Kesey's best book. Peace on earth.
have you read the cider house rules??? ik you like one of irvings other books... its about abortion and i read it when i was like 14 in catholic school during my free periods and i felt so rebellious!!!!! i dont know if i would like it today tho.
Hahaha no, I haven't! Though, I saw the movie and I can't imagine the story without Michael Caine, now. If I stumble across a copy, I'd definitely give it a go now
@@AnaWallaceJohnson omg i saw the movie on a plane before reading the book so i also imagined micheal at least for the begininning!! the book is so long tho and they changed sooo much of it, the movie is barely a spoiler!!!
I've only seen two videos and in both your foot has like narcolepsy. I'm subscribing...I wanna see where this goes. Also Rodrigo Prieto is directing his first film, it's going to be an adaptation of Pedro Paramo by Juan Rulfo.
HA! legend has it, my foot is still asleep. And damn, okay, this book is making solid rounds in my peripheral and now I feel I have to pick it up sooner than later
Why? I don't get that hate against murakami? I understand he writes unrealistic women but it never comes across as misogynistic to me? Plus his prose is great and he seems like a good dude in real life.

i will always trust people who love one hundred years of solitude!
It’s such a great novel. Makes your mind move in directions you didn’t know were possible
Love Red Light Winter!
Right??! Such a great, deep story
Cockroaches was amazing! Just read it this month and agree with everything you said. Love Larson!
When people ask me for a recent read that changed everything, I always suggest that!
Mauler and Questus by english writer Shawn Williamson. Indicated by historian, writer and cinema director Andrew Sinclair. Mauler is compared with White Fang by Jack London.
oh wow! Never heard of it!
Great to hear of new books to me. Just subscribed this is the first video of yours I have seen fabulous. X😊
You're amazing! thank you so much for being here
ok i'm in love with your channel
love to you, baby
Animal farm is a book that has an impact on you! Wow. Its not even my fav but definetely stays with you same as 1984!
Agreed!! I need to revisit 1984-I think I’d understand it more as an adult (read it when I was 16)
@@AnaWallaceJohnson and your book chanel is the only one I have found that is a breeze of fresh air. Cant relate to the reads of anyone here 😅💜
murakami was one of my best friends professors in 2010 and he said in one of her seminars that what i talk about when i talk about running was his favorite out of his own books that he had ever written until that point :)
!!! I love to hear that. It's such a personal book. Not only for Murakami, but for the reader. I feel like it's my story and I imagine others feel the same
I don’t know if you’ve read these memoirs but they are amazing: my life I’m France by Julia child and the glass castle by jeanette wells
Haven't read either, but I know of the latter. Will have to check out the first one!
Christopher Moore “Fluke” and any of his books. Disney bought the rights, so will we ever see them as movies?
Haruki Murakami and Gabriel Garcia Marquez are two of my favorites. Now i love you even more. 🫶🥹
Their words are so beautiful and calming
“one flew over the cuckoo's nest” was a great movie; I watched it a while ago, but didn’t know it was based on a book when I watched it. Now I am debating whether to read the book now, because it will be in reverse order. I am usually a “book first” kinda person 🤣.
Btw just found your channel. I am glad. 😊
One of the best movies of all time! Could watch it on repeat. The movie definitely strays from the novel a bit (most notably narration), but the experiencing of both mediums is highly encouraged! Thank you for being here!!!
Impressive way of presenting
:-D
This is my first video of yours and I love your recommendations and personality! Just subbed.
Sophie! We’re having good times! Welcome to the party!
it would be so wonderful if I could consude book vidoes while reading books! I would have a much shorter TBR 😂
HA! Agreed with you on that, baby!!
oh man, now I want to reread The Secret History...
November!! It's gonna happen. Sweater read-a-thon
@@AnaWallaceJohnson okay but I think I should make us a pie, we should have some tea, don a couple of preppy sweaters and do a vid about this book, and I'm not at all kidding
already had art sex music in my tbr without knowing it was by THE miss cosey - dont know how i didnt connect that, only recognized her from first name (chris & cosey) and didnt know she wrote, have to read it now
oh baby, are our minds the same or what?
omg ive been looking for recommendations tysm 🤭🥰
We are here and ready to party, baby!
😂… your videos are always fun … thank you …
check out Telling Tales an anthology of one act plays edited by Eric Lane … Also, I heard Sarah Kane’s plays are pretty intense…I’d like to read Sam Shepard’s plays at a certain point … & of course I loved Beckett’s End Game … Right now on the fiction front I’m reading East of Eden, Gone Girl, & The Natural.
Same on Sam Shepard. Really enjoyed him as a performer
Books.....okay....But You are so beautiful. God is being beautiful through you and as you. Thank you. And keep shining ,💃🌼💛
Thank you! That's so nice!
sidenote i love your mug
Bennington potters!! an iconic pottery situation
Cool list. Thanks!
thank you for being here!
I've seen the movie for The Beach and loved it. Does the book have similar vibes?
Definitely similar vibes, but the movie took a lot of strange artistic liberties. Loved the book so much more. More grounded and realistic.
damn i need to get to one flew over the cuckoo's nest, also i had no idea the idiot was a vacation story! will need to read it this summer i guess
Cuckoo's nest 4eva!! And The idiot is kiiiind of a vacation story--definitely coincides well with any sort of travel. But absolutely summer read :)))
I just find out your channel last night. You are so gorgeous and I love the way you talk💗
Welcome!! Thank you for stopping on by and sticking around : )
I also enjoyed, if you can enjoy a book about a real serial killer and his murders, Devil in the White City. I think we have the idea that serial killers are a modern invention but they aren't and this guy was scary.
You hit the nail on the head!!! They’ve been here for years (even more rampant in years prior, probably)
You got good taste. I got inspired to read again. Can you give me some tips on how to finish a book that I start? (hope that makes sense).
" how about a one-line zinger of a response to that comment.....maybe ?...................thank you....great video..........
hahahaha! Honestly, that's a great review. I'd say, "a shopping list filled with must haves" : )
@@AnaWallaceJohnson 😁😁😁🙃😁😁😁
Thanks Ana. 😊❤️
thank YOU, Tanya!
Just fond your channel through another booktuber (patos.) I think I will enjoy your channel and your content. Happy to be here. :)
*found, lol
how cool is pato??!! they're so chill and so genuine. So happy they sent you on ova!
lmao me everyday, don't worry
03:23. You say “listening to”. Is that accurate? Did you read or listen? If “listen”, who’s the narrator? Thanks
Yay another booktuber mentioning Cockroaches! It's such a great book.
I've seen it pop up a bit lately in the space and I'm happy it's getting the recognition it deserves!! I think it's what reading and education is all about
I subscribed instantly ❤️ such good books ✨
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I just discovered you and I love your videos!!! 💜 I actually do the same thing to discover new booktubers too! We have similar taste 😊
ayyyyee! So happy you're here! We're gonna have fun!
One Hundred Years, etc.
tough read, but well worth it....
One Flew, etc. is great, isn't it?
Written from an American Indian's perspective.
A perspective the movie abandons.
Oh, well... Ken Kesey's best book.
Peace on earth.
Where is this sweater from?? So cute 🥺
vintage Fred Perry from eBay! Was Oleg's and the I stole it.
You made my dayyyyy!!!
🥺🥺
have you read the cider house rules??? ik you like one of irvings other books... its about abortion and i read it when i was like 14 in catholic school during my free periods and i felt so rebellious!!!!! i dont know if i would like it today tho.
Where did you get that gorgeous cup?! 🙂
I think my mom got it from a yard sale, but it’s Bennington Potters!
Loved this video! ✨
this video loves you!
We have a lot of the same favorites, so I subbed. :)
Favorites unite!!!
you remind me of a booktube grace helbig (love that)
Omg!! I used to love her!! Thank you
I would describe you in this video as "Brown Fire"!
the hair is the star of the show ⭐️⭐️
you should read In Order to Live. very harrowing memoir
I looked it up and it sounds/looks like a novel I’d eat right up
What’s the list pls
I've only seen two videos and in both your foot has like narcolepsy. I'm subscribing...I wanna see where this goes. Also Rodrigo Prieto is directing his first film, it's going to be an adaptation of Pedro Paramo by Juan Rulfo.
HA! legend has it, my foot is still asleep. And damn, okay, this book is making solid rounds in my peripheral and now I feel I have to pick it up sooner than later
@@AnaWallaceJohnson Ole Sleepy Foot Johnson)
Can't trust people who enjoy Murakami lol
Why? I don't get that hate against murakami? I understand he writes unrealistic women but it never comes across as misogynistic to me? Plus his prose is great and he seems like a good dude in real life.
@@oofym353 his prose is great lmao stahhhhp
