Hell yeah. I'm that Opeth kind of fan too. I love the old stuff, and the new stuff as well. I'm excited about this new album, not just for the growling thing, it's the fact that this single (uncomplete), is giving us not just a mix, but the definition of Mikael's ideas in all his journey with Opeth. This album feels like it will be the final form of Opeth, maybe their greatest album. And everybody know, that's huge words, having masterpieces like Blackwater, Ghost, My Arms, Watershed, Heritage, Sorceress and my fav, Still Life. I can't wait till October 11, i need the album in my hands. And being my birthday two days later, it will be my biggest present. Thanks, Mikael.
I'm with you brother. The past year has been the worst year of my life. The announcement of a new Opeth album is one of the few bright spots I've had this year.
I'm really excited to take a listen. I haven't really been a fan of Newpeth, but In Cauda was one of my favorite albums in their entire discography. This album sounds like something new and different, so I'm pumped.
Man, I'm really excited for this record. I know you said that they're going in a different direction with it, but I really do hope there's at least one of those old classic acoustic sections that they used to do with that melancholic vibe to them. That's probably what I miss most from those old records.
I’m actually really glad to hear the songs are tighter. I love me some long prog songs and opeth is up there in my favorite bands but in the last few years I’ve really found love in “shorter” prog songs that don’t drone on. Insanely stoked for this one and what a surprise to already get a preview. Thank you!
Great preview! One of my favorite songs from their most recent albums has been Eternal Rains Will Come due to the layred vocal harmonies that sound a bit Crosby Stills Nash and Young esque and I wonder if those make a return on the album?
@@dvirbarkayphotography I'd say more ICV than Pale...but also plenty of different stuff. They do lots of new Opethisms but because they are telling a story I think it inspired them to do few new things to tell the story.
My first Opeth experience was Heritage, so I’m a fan of that dim lamp, shag carpet, proggy style. Having said that, I grew up on death metal as a teen. So this, even though you said it’s not a mix of the 2 styles, will be very enjoyable for me.
Your video has me more excited. I was hoping it wouldn't go back to the style of those old (still amazing) earlier albums. I'm glad to hear that it's something sounding completely new. I love the new stuff too and it took me 10 years to actually give the last 4 albums a full listen, and I loved them and am kind of wanting more of that Opeth. Don't attack me die hard screaming/death metal Opeth fans. I do love GR, BWP, MAYH etc etc etc, but when they keep putting out new stuff that sounds different and amazing, I want them to keep going that direction.
First time here. Not sure which I liked more: your voice or the preview. The new single has blown me away, and it's been a good decade and a half since Opeth have done that. Glad to hear two things: That the harsh vocals are not just on this tune only, and that Opeth isn't trying to go back in time with their musical style. This song just sounds fresh, new & exhilarating.
I was afraid to click on this, but I couldn’t help myself - and I’m so glad I did! This was a fantastic, spoiler free preview for the album that told me exactly what I needed to know going in. Thank you for this 😎
New subscriber, here, specifically because of this video, and I’m green with envy of you. Mikael Akerfeldt’s OPETH is my favorite musical artist/band(.) I am absolutely beside myself with this newest release and I can hardly wait to hear the full story! Thanks for the great preview, without spoiling the surprises that are sure to follow. 🤘🏼🖤
Really enjoyed this one, agree on every point made - especially the drums. I’ve been playing for 50 years and I can say with stick wisdom this is so far exceptional and creative drumming.
I was more excited for this release than I have ever been for any other album and your video has made me even more excited. Opeth is my favourite band too, I love all of their music from their early stuff to their newer prog rock stuff. My two favourite records are My Arms, Your Hearse and Still Life, and I can’t wait to hear a new concept album from this band.
When I do album previews and reviews, I listen to the available pre order tracks or full album while writing, it helps keep everything fresh at the time.
I am so fucking stoked for this record. I've played Section 1 two to three times a day since Friday, and I got the feeling of a very progressive album along the lines of something King Diamond would do. So excited to listen to the full album.
Love the way you break down your thought process for digesting this record. And yes, Opeth has never made a bad record. Just great and greater records. Based off what you've said I think this might be one of the greater ones.
Glad to hear from a true fan that the album is that what the single promised! First video I watched on this channel and your honest opinion about it instantly deserves a thumbs up,a subscription.....all the good stuff!Thanx for the video and stay heavy!🤘😉👍
Its been a while since we've had a new Opeth album they never dissappoint even after the Akerfeldt growls disappeared a while ago with Heritage, but now he's back with them fuk ya! cant wait till they release their latest album!
I am still interested in that opera tier list. I’d have a hard time with that… I think my initial top 3 would be Blackwater, Damnation, and My Arms Your Hearse. But I’d have to sit on that.. Still Life is up there big time.
It is definitely Sophie's Choice. Blackwater was very important in my development as a metalhead so sentimental value makes that #1 for me... But I love Ghost Reveries and Deliverance so much too!
So jealous and excited. One of the things I’ve always liked most about Opeth is their range and the unpredictable changes their songs make. I don’t like the albums since Harvest as much, but I still listen to them and enjoy them. I’m glad it’s not a retread, and every time you used the word “dense”, my excitement went up. Thanks for the preview.
I'm looking forward to this album with the same level of anticipation as the new Alien movie...if both end up anywhere near the hype, I'll be one happy camper

All totally separate but it flows nice. But all Opeth albums have that flow since each song sounds like what would be 7 other bands songs 😆 The flute shows up a few times but I'm not sure if all of them are always Ian.
@@Rick2k2k It's probably gonna take me a couple of weeks. I've got 9 more to write before Friday when they release. Really looking forward to diving into Fulci!! 🤘
Yes! Famine and that evil flute section! I cannot believe how many opeth fans miss that. Forget the whole video, imma drop a like just because you mentioned it because that song deserves some love. Seriously tho on the topic; im a big opeth fan since 2006. i like every opeth album but i favor old ones a bit more but not because they are more death metal, but because new ones did not fully deliver their potential with new direction. i think they neeeded a bit more musical contrast because that was the original thing about opeth, the shift between acoustics and brutal vocals and what not. without those surprising shifts and going full black to full white, it just felt incomplete. i hope that constrast is back, now that we have brutals and its still progy.
Heritage is my favorite Opeth album. The flute solo you mentioned is exactly the type of moment that makes me love it so much. So when Ian Anderson was announced to be in this new album my hype went to the maximum. Personally, I think Heritage is a wildly misunderstood and under appreciated album. The way you describe the new album definitely has me cautiously optimistic!
God damn, dude. So jealous. I'm not gonna pretend like I'm a fan, but I do love Ghost Reveries, and since you name-dropped that, I'm still very excited for this one. I was hoping you could sway me to pre-order The Last Will And Testament, but man.. I'm still torn 😅 I'm not that invested when a band slows things down, but since you mentioned that the drummer is busy as hell on this record, the slower sections might still work for me 🤷
Maybe another single will drop between now and release because each is quite different. That might give you a better judge of whether to pre order or not.
@@heavymetalphilosophy I'm sure it will. I must admit, that the theme of the album alone is intriguing as hell. I'm all about an intense listen with the lyrics as well. IF the story is any good 😅🙏
This dude looks like a cross between X-Pac and Justin Whang. The point about the growls being used as a story telling device makes me think of Witherscape's use of growls and cleans as character/POV voices.
@@Aenigmakil §1-§7. The reason I say this is because it's a fully story. They just move right into each other in true Opeth fashion. The closing song "A Story Never Told" is a really soft, but I need to get my hands on the lyrics before I can fully judge. Just on sound I don't like this one as much, but if it's as I suspect... it seems like a plot twist in the story to close. If that's true then it will likely change my opinion.
I'm so jealous. I don't think I've ever looked so forward to a new release from a big band since Reign In Blood came out. That's a long time. I'm glad you got the advance of the album and gave an honest generalization of what you think of it so far. But it's appreciated that you're ordering the box set, then again, you're an Opeth head and will buy it no matter what. Me, I'd like to listen to it before I buy it. And I am an Opeth head and thought the last 4 albums weren't up to snuff. I like my Opeth growly and super heavy. Those last 4 albums were anything but. Made me sad. To me, Watershed was Opeth's last great album. So I'm skeptical, but hopeful that this new one is great I hope.
The only thing I wasn’t over the moon about from the single was the guitars were so dialed back. It was vocals and drums so up front. I don’t expect death metal distortion at all; it’s moreso just the volume is so faint in the mix. A fat, cleanish tone is fine, just louder to match the energy of the growls.
🤔 yea there are a lot of instruments. Certain riffs and of course solos stand out more on other tracks but this might be an issue for you in general on the record.
Thanks, even more excited now. But it’s not section, it’s paragraph. This is confirmed on the official RUclips release of the song in the description. (5:37) ruclips.net/video/bwDrIelXirY/видео.htmlsi=j6zTKgSGQz5B7LGE
Now that it's been a minute I feel I was right to rank it A tier underneath Blackwater and Ghost Reveries. I'm still loving it. It's so good. But if I'm going on a road trip I still crave BWP and GR. Might just be because I grew up on those records. Also I'm expecting them to drop something else today. 🤞🤞

@@heavymetalphilosophy I'm sure it will. I must admit, that the theme of the album alone is intriguing as hell.
I'm all about an intense listen with the lyrics as well. IF the story is any good 😅🙏
Great preview, thanks ! Do you have the total runtime of the album ?
About 51 minutes
Are there any songs with just clean vocals throughout the whole song?
Only 2. S3 and A Story Never Told. It's not a scream fest. Every song has clean vocals but most of them have at least some growling.
New Genre Unlocked: Spooky Ghost Prog Metal
I can dig it! 🤘🤘
Can you still do a tier list with this album included?
This dude looks like a cross between X-Pac and Justin Whang. The point about the growls being used as a story telling device makes me think of Witherscape's use of growls and cleans as character/POV voices.
😆
I cannot stop smiling 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁

@@heavymetalphilosophyyou know! 🤘🏾
@@heavymetalphilosophyany favourite songs?
So I'm skeptical, but hopeful that this new one is great
I hope.
Wow! Thats a high bar! There's been a lot of killer albums since Reign in Blood. 🤘🤘
@@heavymetalphilosophy Guess I'm a picky Metal head.
Totally agree with the Famine riff, totally evil. My second fav record of second era Opeth after Pale Communion
PappaAbe has good taste! 🤘🤘
@@heavymetalphilosophyfair enough, thanks for the thoughtful reply. Keep doin what you do. \m/
That’s funny what you said about Step Brothers. I watched it again recently and laughed only one time. “Okay, now the suits seem pretty fucked up.”
Yea it was full of surprises on the first watch but after you've seen it and aren't surprised anymore... it doesn't hold up.
X-Pac with the advance listen privilege?! One-two this ohnn?! Luckieeeeee
😆
Thanks, even more excited now. But it’s not section, it’s paragraph. This is confirmed on the official RUclips release of the song in the description.

Thank you! 🙏🤘
Please tell me you sing blues. It's not just the talking voice, but also the phrasing and emotion in the speaking. 😂
😆 my second favorite kind of music. I have performed in blues bands but I definitely wouldn't call what I do singing 😆
Hey man, how’s the new album sitting, after 3 weeks? October 11th, feels so far away! 😅
@@heavymetalphilosophythat’s great to hear! Though we all have are own personal favs! But I’m so looking forward to hearing it myself… not sure I want to hear another song, before the album drops! But it’s still what feels like, a ways off 😅 thank you for replying, and I hope you’re having a fantastic sunday! 🤘🏻
Looks like what they were teasing to drop today is a playthrough of §1 by Frederick. 🤷
@@heavymetalphilosophy oh really? That’s pretty cool! I did think a new single, would likely drop on a Friday?! But I’m up for watching Fredrick do his thing 👌🏻 even though I prefer mikaels lead! I know that’s propably heresy 😄
I’ve heard the full version of §1, and the orchestral part is sublime! I hope there are more parts like that 🙏🏻
This is an album to relish at the autumn, it's Opeth, it's impossible to relish it in the summer just like generally Black Metal for instance, at least for me!
Every November first I play Dirge For November 😆🤘
@@heavymetalphilosophy Exactly, the spirit is that! Blackwater park is a perfect autumn album, just like Opeth generally!
How many Songs in total have the growls?
6 out of 8 😁🤘🤘
@@heavymetalphilosophy So Paragraph 3 was just a curser. Ok. Thank you.
