fun fact: this is actually this entire band's first live performance. not only that but it's the first time they have all done music with each other in the same place. excited to hear more music from them
That’s why they don’t call their sets “shows” or “gigs” they call them ceremonies. Because they’re ceremonies where you actually experience what they’re doing/saying/telling. Even just listening to the albums are an experience in their own.
Im Phanta You’ll find “galder” in the Swedish and New Norwegian dictionaries. But I’ve never heard it used. Usually people in the Nordic countries say “magi”.
Im Phanta “Galdr” means chanting or magic chanting. It’s a word in Danish too, used in at least the early Dragonlance translations, but it’s archaic. The average native speaker wouldn’t understand it.
KRIGSGALDR Translates to "War Incantation / Battle Spell" - I think - and the song is about pre-Iron Age Germany. How peaceful ancient tribes became warlike in response to invasions. The story was translated from carvings found on stones dating back way before the Vikings or even the Romans. The animated music video tells the story better. Speaking of gamers, you might be interested to know that Heilung's music was featured in the trailer for Hellblade 2.
The lands of pre iron age germany were very peacefull until the arrivel of the proto germanic tribes in scandinavia and the baltic coast of germany and poland. They expanded south to the Harz mountains. After the gallic wars of Caesar the celtic kingdoms of southern germany got destroyed by germanic tribes like the markomannii. But even the germanic tribes were not very warlike until the romans attacked them. That was the point were they become warrior cultures.
It's not so much about going to raid, it's about fighting to live. The lyrics in the middle literally say "What if I want to talk about peace and understanding, but you only understand the language of the sword?" The official music video they made for this is a little disturbing and graphic in a runic sort of way. It depicts a village being invaded by outsiders, men being killed, women being raped, and finally, they fight back, wiping out their enemy to try to preserve their way of life.
the three members of this band represent: The Gods (woman in white), Mankind (painted face with no headdress), and the shaman or bridge between the two (the headdress in the middle). this is actual sagas from iron ages runes spoken in the actual proto-germanic language. these are real antlers and hide drums and human bones. this is the roots of all Europeans.
There singing in icelandic. It would be nice to hear my ancestors true spoken language, old norse. But it has been long forgotten. The garments that they have on is the garments they would wear before war to pump up the northmen. That is the clothing of the forn sidr. Or in Icelandic, the old ways. We northmen never went away. We just had nothing left to fight.
"This is like Shamanism" - yes, it is! (Esp. since Shamanism isn't limited to Native Americans) ~ Nice to see a reaction to Heilung that's full of awe and appreciation, it seems a rarity.
Im native ( Yakama and technically grand ronde) I first saw the thumbnail for this og video and immediately thought it was some live pow wow video and was excitingly surprised! Still don't know the heritage/origins of the language/culture of this music/band but I was TRULY too rapped up in this brand new(at least to me)music! Truly #UnityThroughMusic
@@mostlyknowasmka9729 The pre-Christian religious practices of ancient Northern European seems much more similar to Native Americans than to the Abrahamic religions.
@someguyontheinternet dotcom I'm sorry but the sami wasn't first in Scandinavia. It was ice up there. They moved in to the north of the phennoscandinavia when the ice melted. And they're a mix like nearly all others.
@counselthyself oh, and just so you know: Johannes Krause Never EVER said or write anything close to the bullshit your babling here. Stop using reference your not intelligent enough to even understand properly.
Most people are pretty narrow minded in their taste of music. I'm glad that actual ARTISTS don't share these prejudices. I love watching artists appreciate other artists from wildly different traditions from what they are used to.
I didn't even know what to expect beforehand. I was going to leave the festival early. But then the last artist I saw, I was Kati Rán, recommended her audience to all go to the main stage for Heilung and she was also going to do that. So I thought, why not. And then I stood there in the crowd. And I didn't know what I heard and saw. It was as if a time portal had opened. I was captivated from the first minute.
Ok, fun fact: those things the woman was playing are real *human* bones. They got it from like a museum or something and have papers that allow them to have the bones and say where they got them from, but still the band always gets some troubles when they travel abroad and border control notices the bones. :)
Not all of them are human bones. I know they have a forearm bobe, alongside the drum painted in human blood and the human ash rattle, but most the stuff seems to be animal from what I'm seeing
I have seen quite a few reaction vidos on Heilung now, and what really strikes me is how they are capable of hitting EVERYONE in their heart. Rappers, classical musicians, metal heads, jazz freaks, folk fans of any flavor, just across the board - everyone. Heilung really seem to have found the most deep most common ancestor of ANY music, and amplified it to the modern days. They are incredible. I especially loved those two dudes' faces when Maria started singing - it is probably what I looked like when I first heared her. SOOOO thrilled to see them live in December this year
LOL yeah though the germanic soceities did not willingly invade the saxons or celts. They were forced into the regions of saxons and celts because of the expanding roman empire. Yeah it got troublesome, sure, my point is the germanic peoples did not plan to invade and rage.
In what parallel universe do you live? The saxons in wessex have benn those folks who dealt best with viking invasions. And their ancestors ( when they still were been divided into some smaller tribes like cheruscians, marsi and so on ) defined the northern border of the roman empire. Battle in the Teutoburg Forrest anyone? Celts have been running away from vikings AND saxons or were conquered on sight.
There was also a tribe called Saxons in Germany. They had the same gods as the Norse Germanic had, but they were forced to convert into Christianity around 700.
@@Mario-ol8nn They're the same Saxons in origin. In England (the Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Frisians) all worshipped the Germanic pantheon as well until they were christianized by missionaries coming from Ireland in the 7th century.
Great reaction. For the record, it has nothing to do with Native American, it has shamanistic elements LIKE Native Americans but it comes from Germanic shamanism. All peoples throughout Europe pre-Christian era was pagan. The Germanics and Celts being more isolated than the Meditations held onto their shamanistic elements for a longer period in history so Heilung tries to represent much of the sounds they would of had as documented by the Roman Empires encounters with the outside, erry, world.
There's some cultural debt here though. Heilung's Faust has a style of throat singing clearly inspired by that of Mongolia and Tibet. It's an interesting intuitive guess on how cultures of colder climates might have similar sense of sound - I mean, you can stumble upon some forms of throat singing when you've got a sore throat and your voice goes low. Regardless - the show was _amazing_.
@@abstractedaway as far as I remember he learned throat singing to use for heilung since there are Roman records of throat singing or similar sounds among the Germanic tribes. The tradition in Europe has been lost, but since there are other cultures where it persists, they try to learn and recreate the past. Heilung is amplified history.
@@Plexpara Germanic not German, there was no such thing as germans back then since there was no Germany yet, but there was an area that the romans called Germania which was more or less all of northern europe. So when we talk about germanic tribes/people we are talking about the people that lived in the countries we today call Norway,Sweden,Denmark,Germany,Belgium,Netherlands,Britain,Northern France and maybe parts of Poland,Estonia,Lithuania and Latvia.
@@cl_nord77 of course we talk about germans when we talk about sweden, denmark etc cause tehy startet in germania.spread out from the middle of it.or you think they never left home and just sit inside their village or what? thats why the people in germania the oldest if you go back and more back.the dutch even sing it in ther hymn."from german blood" you can hate as much as you want.thats what it is...i mean...we all had to start somewhere or?and in europe it was mostly the place around germania. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Germanic_peoples
Christianity has completely destroyed most pagan religions whereever it spread. Some parts were absorbed (most Christmas and Easter customs we know) because people wouldn't give up all of their traditions upon conversion. With Christianity being on a slow decline in Northern and Western Europe in the past 30-40 years there's been a lot of renewed interested in trying to piece together this lost cultural identity from whatever scraps remain. Despite all the interest we will never be able to restore what it once was, but what I feel is happening is more akin to making something new from parts of something that was broken. There's not really any coordinated effort, it's mostly sole historians and artists like this band with an interest in historical documents and artifacts who will interpret them in their art or literature. But exactly this continuously happening over long timespans is how new cultures are born, isn't it?
The Roman's did far more to destroy all the pagan religions of Europe before christianity was even a thing. And it's not christianity that been the decline of Europe it's been Zionism that's been the decline
@@envynemo4170 It was Christians who forced the Scandinavian countries to convert and abandon their gods. It was Christians who stamped out Celtic paganism. The Romans had nothing to do with that.
Be it the romans or the Christians the body of the original comment is correct. They are piecing together pieces of the old with their pieces of the new. No one is around to pass on the old stories, so new ones have to be made. While they are new they pay homage to the old ways and with the old instruments. It has opened up a truly amazing avenue for artists of this kind.
Glad you guys really enjoyed it. Heilung doesn't perform a concert, they say they perform a ritual asking the gods and the fallen to join us. You should look into some of their others like norupo and traust
Those ARE her real dreads, and her natural color. She's Maria Franz, the men are Uwe and Christopher. The bones are real, some of them human. It's weird, but... omg I love her teeth.
Yeah it’s actually a term we as European put on the Native American culture , not one of their words, it actually a word with German and Russians roots
Though this is supposed to be a Galdr/ Galster which is directly linked to the allfather Odin/Wotan, so of a religion that had already developed out of pure nature worshipping into worshipping gods personifying human actions and emotions (Wotan being foremost the God of battle rage) and thus had priests. If you want to learn about Germanic naturalistic religion and shamanism look up the fairy tale of Frau Holle (German)/ Mother Hulda (English) and its history as probably the oldest surviving religious story in Germanic oral tradition, predating the dawn of a pantheon of gods when people worshipped the earth mother.
I was there in the crowd. It was their first live performance. Heilung is German for healing. The nme their music, musical history. Themes are viking age, proto germanic. Heilung changed my life. As Americans we are cut off from our genetic roots. I'm mainly Norse, Celt, German and Sumerian descent. Helped me through my Sacred Heart activation. Most beautiful experience of my life.
It is almost like the abrahamic religions cut us off from our connection to nature. Now with the decline of the Abrahamic religions we are starting to reconnect slowly.

I am glad that you give this extremely exceptional Nordic group a chance. I tell you a little about its history. The group, which are two boys and one girl, have Norwegian, Danish and German nationality and uses instruments such as horns of different animals, drums, human bones, rattles with human ashes, bells, stones, all to go back to the first musical compositions that They were able to interpret 10,000 years ago, in the iron age in northern Europe. All the letters are taken from carved gadgets from the era of the Nordic iron, such as arrowheads, bows, swords, rune stones and recite poems and psalms of war, peace and protection. Whereupon and for this, heilung, which means healing in German, is in close collaboration with archaeologists specializing in the field. The languages used by heilung are several. Among them are Latin, Old Danish, German and English. They were so successful with their first album that they had to release a new live album, which includes 2 new songs. Also a video of that album live and this year they released their second work, futha, which is a much more feminine work. His first album, Ofnir, is much more aggressive and masculine. During the concerts some representations of how these ancient rituals of the iron age could be made. Also just finished the soundtrack of the video game Hellblade 2. I hope this review helps you to understand a bit the context of this musical group. I recommend this video of her concert. @ Some curiosities. When they built the drums for the group, one of which is made from horse skin, a doctor drew blood from the three members of the group and painted the drums and some of their clothes with it. The male singer with the deep voice is a great tattoo artist and very professional. The bones the girl plays with are human bones and sometimes they have had problems in the countries of the tour to introduce them through the border from the country where the concert was held.
These are the people you want to come to your town. Heilung is german for healing. Also fun fact, all people regardless of skin color come from hunter gatherers. Tribes. And many traditions are very similar. Which is why you can hear this and its more then hearing a song. Its magic almost, and resonates with you. Brings all people together and if you ask me.... this group lives up to their name

Everybody talks about 'ethnic' music, discounting the Northern Europeans, but we were as connected to our land as much as any First Nation Australians or North Americans.
Your ancient musical traditions are gone, though. Lost to Christianity and the greater European medieval status quo. That being said, there's nothing wrong with picking up what shards remain and forging them anew, so long as you acknowledge that that's what's going on. As Heilung demonstrates, the results can be incredible.
@@MushVPeets I Thinks it's even more complicated and essential. Religion in it's classic was pretty much lost it's stand in europe. I have commented on this video before, but I have been rewatching and it is just so apparent how you are taken in by the music and show. When I heard this for the first time, I was hooked.... it sounds so primal. The traditional Irish music from my own country seems very modern in comparison. It's so spiritual and natural... you can imagine ancient peoples in northern europe when you watch and listen to this.
krigs - belonging to war. galdr - magic chant And yes, scientists today interpret Viking religion as being part of the shamanic religions that spanned the whole northern hemisphere
Thus, not strange if people get associations to other such shamanic practices. Sami, Innuit, American indigenous people, Siberian ones, or whatever. I am pretty certain Heilung have found inspiration for their costumes and make up in other places than Germanic core areas, even if that is where they get the material for their texts, as far as I know.
5:52 "you hear that sound and your village is about to be invaded." True words! That is exactly what the song is about, except sung from the side of the villagers being attacked. I was so looking forward that ANY of the reaction channels FINALLY tackle "Heilung" (which means "Healing" in German). There is something pre-christian, pre-historic in that music that speaks to our inner-ancient root. That is what binds all spiritual traditions with Shamanism is the oldest of them all, it's so similar worldwide with all tribal people. There are actually anecdotes from people with major illnesses in the hospital bed who started to listen to the deep layered songs of Heilung (healing) and they got better, became more grounded. KRIGSGALDR Translates to "War Incantation / Battle Spell" - I think - and the song is about pre-Iron Age Germany. How peaceful ancient tribes became warlike in response to invasions. The official music video they made for this is a little disturbing and graphic in a runic sort of way. It depicts a village being invaded by outsiders, men being killed, women being raped, and finally, they fight back, wiping out their enemy to try to preserve their way of life.

I am extremely jealous
I know they have a forearm bobe, alongside the drum painted in human blood and the human ash rattle, but most the stuff seems to be animal from what I'm seeing
no....euronymous ...bones
I have seen quite a few reaction vidos on Heilung now, and what really strikes me is how they are capable of hitting EVERYONE in their heart. Rappers, classical musicians, metal heads, jazz freaks, folk fans of any flavor, just across the board - everyone. Heilung really seem to have found the most deep most common ancestor of ANY music, and amplified it to the modern days. They are incredible. I especially loved those two dudes' faces when Maria started singing - it is probably what I looked like when I first heared her. SOOOO thrilled to see them live in December this year

"when you hear that, run."
Ahh I see you are of Saxon decent.
Or a Roman.
"But you only understand the language of the sword." is one of my top fave lyrics EVER.

Everyone loves that chick dude , she's the primordial goddess that calls out to us all.

Some curiosities. When they built the drums for the group, one of which is made from horse skin, a doctor drew blood from the three members of the group and painted the drums and some of their clothes with it. When I heard this for the first time, I was hooked.... it sounds so primal. The traditional Irish music from my own country seems very modern in comparison. It's so spiritual and natural... you can imagine ancient peoples in northern europe when you watch and listen to this.
krigs - belonging to war. galdr - magic chant
And yes, scientists today interpret Viking religion as being part of the shamanic religions that spanned the whole northern hemisphere
Living peacefully in isolation until war is forced upon them. This is all the more powerful when you listen and see the performance while taking in the lyrics. It invokes so many emotions. Truly a masterpiece.

Beloved brother enemy
I sing my sword song for you
The lullaby of obliteration
So I can wake up with a smile
And bliss in my heart
And bliss in my heart
And bliss in my heart
Coexistence, Conflict, combat
Devastation, regeneration, transformation
That is the best I can do for you
I see a grey gloom on the horizon
That promises a powerful sun to rise
To melt away all moons
It will make the old fires of purification
Look like dying embers
Look like dying embers
Look like dying embers
The household wanes,
Vil threw a death wave over those
the oar locks wore out for, with the tired mast-top
Who brought...
Who brought the horde over to the far country?
The godly-fish from Firnøy’s streams
Swimming in the drift
of the land of shining meadows.
Who brought...
Who brought the horde over to the far country?
for pirate metal, check out Alestorm - Drink (or any Alestorm song, really)
Fuxked with an anchor?
Hey there Trash Talkers, I’m damned near 70 years old, I’m following ya’ll ! Love your reaction to Heilung!
If y'all are gamers, Heilung is involved in the soundtrack for Hellblade 2: Senuas Saga. The first game was trippy but realy good
You should check out a song called "Helvegen" by Wardruna, with Aurora... you won't regret it...
Ooh yeah, that's a good one!
The song I want be played at my funeral

Amazing song
They use human bones in their music, they got in trouble at airports before.
No way... Hollywood was curious about that
@@Hollywood6IX True, Maria Franz is playing human radus and ulna bones. The customs usually throws a fit when they are on tour.
Give a listen to The Hu, wolf totem

Great song.
Saw them live in Sydney last year. Fuck me dead. What a show. A ritual. Blew me away. They are coming back to Oz later this year. Already got the tickets.
It’s only been a week I’ve listened to heilung and I can’t stop listening to them..🖤🖤
This is the same reaction the first time I heard Heilung. Now I"m hooked!! Their music gives me the chills and is so haunting, fierce, and deep. I feel detached from this plane of existence when I have my headphones on listening to Heilung. Good pick guys!
Smoke dog looks like King Ecbert from the show Vikings
That one I have heard before ... so much that I actually signed up to be a double.
Technically they are the people before Vikings. Ancient Celts hundreds of years before Vikings
Lol no germanic tribes
@@rsotm7069 my mistake yes, thank you
@@russbuss98 its alright
Ya... the celts did not live or control the nordic are of Europe total different cultures but celts did control all of the central an eastern Europe tell the Roman's destroyed just about all of the Celtic cultures, the only remaining Celtic cultures today are the Scots Irish and welish that still speak the oldest know languages in Europe and were the last remaining area's to have druids.
The Norse Faith Aren't Vikings a type of germanic tribe?
At 13:17 when Maria Franz turns her head slightly is quite wicked.
Powerful isnt it? Like she just looked into my soul.
The first time I came across them to didn’t know what to think but I couldn’t not listen. You guys said it’s primal and your spot on because you can feel it deep in your soul. Love you guys . Love and respect from the UK
I was at the concert of Heilung in munic. The most impressing concert I ever was. I am an other person since this experciance. My ancesters are with me now.
Indeed. I get what you ate saying
They live up to their name. Since I found them, I feel more... connected. To everything. It feels... right.
So jealous
Man you guys really should check out Alien Weaponry "Kai Tangata"
That song rips!!
👍 from Christchurch New Zealand 🇳🇿
It's awesome I totally agree give it a watch💚
Che
Oh yeah this.
Saw them in January, before the world ended. They call their live shows rituals, and it feels like one. The name is literally "healing."
You are so lucky!!! I was supposed to see them in October 😔 Postponed. Of course.
@Temaghn O Murchada naw Portland OR
I was on their concert in october 2019 If u are there when they're live it feels Like an ritual
Saw them in Norway and then in Chicago. Both were incredible experiences.
Best show I ever been 👊
I was so looking forward that ANY of the reaction channels FINALLY tackle "Heilung" (which means "Healing" in German).
It changes you!
It's been a very long time since I bothered with a reaction video because people make it about them. You two gentlemen are clearly more interested in exploring our world than trying to be "cool". ... which makes you cool. This earns a sub.
The thing about this kind of music is that its REALY powerful to listen to not like in a emotional way but in a strong way I don't know how to explain it but its just a badness sensation
Watch the entire Lifa show that this song is taken from. It's an experience. As others have said Heilung means healing. You will feel that sense when you watch the whole thing. By the end of the show you feel drained, yet calm and peaceful. You feel light, like you've literally been healed.
Even if you don't do this for the videos I highly suggest you do it for the experience. This video is just the tip of the iceberg.
I saw them live earlier this year. Was lots of fun and the theatrics were amazing.
I’ve been emceeing for over 20 years and this is the dopest shit I’ve heard in a long time, I love that you guys are showing them love. I’ve been on them for the last couple years, I just adapted an entire 6 track album to their songs, this being one of them. It will be free and available early next year I’ll shoot y’all a copy. Keep being team humans fellas, keep doing it!
Epic! So awesome to see reaction videos of amazing songs like this!
"I feel like I am put under a spell."
10 seconds later: *headbangs*
Pirate metal: Alestorm
Folky-piratey song to check out: "The Mariner's Revenge" by the Decemberists. That one has amazing storytelling and just a different sound than most people expect.
I was gonna say "Drink" by Alestorm but any of them work. Lol.
Keelhauled by Alestorm is great
Yeaah Alestorm !
Alestorm are awesome. For pirate rap Captain Dan and the Scurvy Crew are great!
also an album called Rogue's Gallery ruclips.net/video/lyyzP30tF4Q/видео.html
Hey if you guys like this then y'all should checkout Skald: Rún.
SKÁLD, Heilung and my favourite Wardruna are my go to bands for these kinds of music. Some of their tracks puts me in this spiritual level even if I don't believe in any god.
This video was suggested to me.
Love the vibe y’all have on your channel. 🖤
“There’s gotta be pirate metal right” Swashbuckle, Alestorm, etc..... yes, yes there is
Alestorm 🍻🖤🖤🖤🖤
Ye Banished Privateers is a favorite of mine at the moment. Alestorm is great too.
