  • Welcome to our first time watching Crocodile Dundee (1986).
What does generation alpha think of it knowing nothing of the film?
We loved this! It's still great and maybe even the best romantic comedy ever. Sharp script and genuine on-screen chemistry, this film charms you! Written by Paul Hogan, Ken Shadie and John Cornell, directed by Peter Faiman and starring Paul Hogan and Linda Kozlowski.
A true delight. It charms you to both New York and to Australia from script to execution, performances and post-production. Hope you enjoy our reactions, commentary and discussion as we watch it for the first time from two different generations (admittedly one of us 30 years ago). We both found it containing a whole range of experiences.

We hope you enjoy this Reaction Video. We both absolutely loved it. It's a stunning, charming film which celebrates Australian and New York culture. Since recording, and reading about it, some have said it's outdated with too much stereotyping, and it's interesting here to see what someone from generation alpha thinks. We believe, certainly with comedy, it plays on these tropes, with a relatively naive character. Therefore it's very much the point to have this perspective and send up on these stereotypes. As it was then, and as it was today. It’s still a very great film. We hope you enjoy our reactions.

      It's not outdated imo.
There's a reason most people today prefer watching older movies rather than "modern" politically correct movies.

This is one of the movies that conveys a very special feeling of the mid-80s.
The plot combined with the character development is incredibly funny, and at the same time the movie seems wonderfully relaxed and light, despite the predictability of the premise. Definitely a classic that you can watch again every few years.

This remains Australia's Highest Grossing film, EVER. You'll like CD2, also. A few years after this came out I got to Northern Queensland and had to get me one of those Croc Tooth Hatbands - genuine, but from farm-raised crocs, so not endangered and able to legally import into US. A 'Sheila' is a Chick, a Broad, a Dame - LOL. Their chemistry was real - Paul and Linda got married after this and stayed married 24 years. The lady he groped at the party(Anne Francine) was NOT a man - rather a woman with a deep voice, like Bea Arthur. She was just thrilled to be manhandled. So funny you didn't get it! Anne was nearly 70 years old in the film, and her last credited appearance before retiring from acting. She continued teaching Cabaret singers until 1992, when she suffered a stroke. The end where he walks across the people is so Aussie Outback - when the sheep get packed in the pens so tightly for shearing the sheep dogs typically run around on their backs as Mick did, being familiar with that spectacle firsthand.

    • @GenerationMediaReaction
      @GenerationMediaReaction  3 месяца назад

Oh wow, this is interesting. We did wonder about the person at the party, that's hilarious. Didn't know about the sheep dog walking thing either. This adds so much more to the ending! Thanks for commenting

Thank you guys for taking the time to share this. Your videos are really wholesome and fun to watch. Did you know that Paul hogan was one of the guys who built the Sydney harbor Bridge? There's a famous picture of him having a smoke on top of the bridge rigging.

Not built - painted. Construction of the bridge was completed before Hogan was born.
But he used to be one of the tradies who painted it. Certain exposed sections of the Bridge need to be repainted every 5 years, so it’s an almost-constant job.
The Bridge has an annual $20 million maintenance budget.
Just one full coat of paint would take about 30,000 litres of the traditional “Sydney Harbour Bridge Grey” paint. The paint is a registered trademark colour and not for sale on the open market.
There’s a few cool photos online of Hoges at work as a rigger on the Big Coathanger in the ‘70s.

I had a vhs player even into the 2000s. At one point, I was trying to track down a problem in an older vhs player. Had the whole thing dismantled, parts all over my living room and I had convinced myself I could remember how to put it all back together. It’s a great Aussie flick. Paul Hogan is very much Australian comedy royalty. There was an interesting story on how they got the money to make the film. John Cornell is Hogan mate and collaborator and he helped Kerry Packer setup World Series Cricket in the 70’s. He got to know the cricketers and I think the story of Dundee was kicked around at a BBQ with the likes of Dennis Lillee who, amongst others, decided on the spot to help finance it.
Was a great decision and made them a lot of money.

After someone says "We're jammed in here like sheep!" Dundee literally climbs over the tops of peoples heads and bodies to get his love. ooooh... I had to come back....
Big Trouble in Little China 1986 - 2 men fight against chinese magical warriors who work for a cursed ghost seeking to become flesh again. An absolute 80's adventure filled with tons of kung-fu action, monsters, creatures and GREAT dialogue!
LEGEND 1985 - Ridley Scott's 4th film. A dark fairytale adventure with a forrest boy warrior against Darkness the demon. Filled with creatures and action. But I MUST INSIST..... if and when you watch this film, you really need to watch the American release with Tangerine Dream musical score. The other version has Jerry Goldsmith's score but it does not work well and makes the film seem sloooooow and boooooring at times. Everyone that loves this film, remembers the Tangerine Dream score. It's such an 80's score but it works PERFECTLY well with the film, making it a very unique and successful approach that no one has dared to mimic.
This is Spinal Tap 1981 - Comedy GOLD.... British "Rock-umentary". This humor works for ALL ages and is another masterpiece from Rob Reiner(Stand by Me).

This is a classic romantic comedy that is still as funny as ever. I saw this in the theater when it came out, and the whole theater burst into cheers and applause at the ending, probably the greatest final scene ever in a romantic comedy. You identified its vibe very well. It unavoidably reminds me of “Tarzan’s New York Adventure” (1942), the best of Weismuller’s later Tarzan movies.
Paul Hogan became known in the U.S. for a very popular series of commercials he did for the Australia Tourism Board. He presented the same sort of character, a super-friendly regular guy who invited you to visit him in Australia. He capitalized on that popularity to make this movie.
Another great movie featuring the Australian outback is "The Earthling" (1980). It was William Holden's last movie and also featured a very young Ricky Schroder.

Not to deny the existence of sexism, but what is now held as chauvinistic was once held chivalrous.
The only real difference seems to be in a person's world view of equality.
There seems to be a school of thought that believes that if everyone isn't homogeneous and identical, then they are therefore unequal given that equal means same. This is where most modern ideas of patriarchy, sexism, and equity reside even though these are generally the same groups who claim to embrace diversity. This is the mosaic model, but holds no unified principles aside from emotional entitlement to equal outcomes.
The other philosophy is centered more on opportunity rather than outcome, embracing differences (actual diversity) with equal application of principles and rights. This view believes that if everyone has the same opportunities without neglecting practical differences, then THAT is where the equality is achieved. Not to make everyone the same, but to make everyone capable of achieving the same things together. This group never touts diversity but relies on the benefits of all diverse aspects of the human spectrum translating to strength through the common bonds of those principles and rights. This is the melting pot model, but also where many casual terms to depict gender, "race" (ethnicity) and faiths comes from as it is deemed more respectful to recognize and acknowledge differences in order to better unite in practical ways by relying on one another's strengths and protecting against weaknesses.
It's a crying shame that today's post Orwellian education would rather define these two halves of the populace in ways that pit them against one another, for something as useless as political posturing.
Historically, the first (mosaic) school of thought generally leads to tyranny through violence, while the second (melting pot) philosophy typically falls apart into fragments degenerating towards the first (mosaic) at any point they no longer agree on common principles they should stand on.
In this movie you see the female lead trying to be equal in the first school of thought, yet happier with a man resembling the second school of thought, which is pretty realistic for a cheezy ol movie.
