    Millennial here. Having a car can be a necessity or a luxury. Depending on where you live and/or what type of car you get. Before I had a car, I used to mainly walk to work, and take the bus everywhere. One job was a 20-25 minute walk to work. Another job I walked about an hour and a half to get there in the early morning hours, and took the bus home. Only Sundays I got a ride to/from work. These days many Gen Zers that I come across DEPEND on a ride from other people instead of walking or taking the bus. One used to constantly ask me for rides to and from work, but refused to get up early, and there was literally a bus line to take him straight to the warehouse. smh...

      It seems like it obviously wasn't meant in good faith, and is much too pro-boomer, if it starts out with the boomer lie that young people are too entitled and wasteful. There's no evidence for this, it was always a falsehood

    In the US, unless you live in very specific areas, owning a car is a necessity.

    • @AgeismGoesBothWays

      I live in the US. They need more public transportation and bike lanes. The auto industry wouldn't be unhappy about it so I think that's why we can't have those things.

  • @egl3369
    @egl3369 7 месяцев назад +33

    The older woman is full of crap. She earnt 300 pound/year and bought a house for 76 times her annual salary (23,000 pound)? Banks wouldn't even allow that. Her claim that a car is a "choice" is also crap. Some people need a car to get to work (not everyone has access to public transport). Using uber to get to/from work is far more expensive than owning a car. Also, a phone is not just a luxury. You literally need it to survive in today's world, including getting and keeping a job.

    • @rzawistowski33
      @rzawistowski33 4 месяца назад +1

      Cars are absolutely not necessary, where you live and where you work are your choices.

      @@rzawistowski33"Where you live and work are your choice" (as if the idea that only those with pre-existing wealth should be permitted to have choice when it comes to careers and housing isn't an awful idea)
      BTW, typically the places with higher cost of living are the walkable areas with public transportation. Rural areas with lower cost of living have limited public transportation and typically require vehicles to access work, groceries, family members, medical care, etc.
      You literally cannot live anywhere in the US that is both walkable/accessible to reliable public transportation with a low cost of living. It's one or the other.

    When the bus takes 45 mins but a car would take 15 and walking would take 2.5 hrs then yeah you live in a car dependant area which borderline forces you to buy a car. That comes with possible more debt but definitely more bills makes things a lil tougher. And let's not even get started on inflation

      You can move closer or get a job that's closer, those are actual options. I have 3 dozen people that take the bus to work at my job, yes it takes some over an hour. $50 for buss pass or $500 for car, you can also use that bus time to build your skills to get a higher paying job.

And these are just for basic things. Groceries. Appointments etc. I’ve chosen to work from home bc I would have no way to get to and from work everyday. A car is definitely a necessity

    I think she missed out on the point that the boomers only compared themselves to their peers because they didn’t have social media and couldnt look into some strangers life. Where as now we are comparing ourselves and what we have to influencers, celebrities ect because how easy it is to look at their life and what they have. With my peers we are all in the same boat of saving for a house ect just like boomers but then I can look at randomers travelling the world doing X Y Z and making me feel like a failure or I’m not doing enough and that I should be able to afford that. And that’s the difference in pressure and I think that’s where this impulse buying and wanting things comes from

    • @hollyyearn5405
      @hollyyearn5405 10 месяцев назад +2

      I also doubt that she was on £300 a year, probably a month yes but if you look at inflation that would be £1645 now. From 1980 to no there has been a increase of 449% in inflation while minimum pay has only increased by 2.2% since 1980. So £300 is can go a lot further in 1980 than it can now

    I think it's ridiculous to assume their aren't going to be huge differences between two generations that have 50 years between them. All of those years showed massive difference in culture and technology! They don't need a car? When did you get a car mam? My boomer parents had a car by 19. They had one job, part-time, could travel and go on vacation, party, and still have money left over for rent. They bought a house by 20s. Young adults are living with the parents not all by choice and many of them need to move back in because their parents need financial help as well!

    2:09 I don’t disagree that there is entitlement, but I disagree with her reasoning behind that it is something that we were literally handed entitlement the day. We were born on a silver platter like every other generation just different type of entitlement because that’s how the world works. New things that are becoming normal look like entitlement to people that weren’t born with it like TVs. for example, let alone a coloured TV. We expect a TV because it is something that is more affordable than it used to be and it is something that isn’t necessary, but in a way it has been made to become an essential item of someone’s life now because we were born with it in a way

    Having a car in this generation is needed (although you can get around via public transport ) but 'baby boomers' & 'boomers' generation have built the world up so we have to travel to work in a car cause there is no local jobs most people I know have jobs which you need to travel 30 minutes + to get to work. Shops are no longer as available as they used to be so people nedd to drive to get there shopping where as back in the day lol of streets had butchers and fruit veg shops not no more. Some people need cars for children or family members who struggling with daily tasks such as walking too. I bet she drove to this interview aswell.
