    Hi Andy, just seen this.
    I bought the Gem a while ago on the basis of Steve Johnston’s video. I didn’t really get it and it also didn’t seem to fit with what my coach was teaching me, so it stayed in the drawer.
    Then a couple of months ago, I took it on the range for no better reason than I thought it might help with my takeaway.
    The results were ridiculous and like you, it blew my mind. I instantly gained 10 yards with my 6 iron.
    I took it to my coach to try to get an understanding of why it had such an impact and he dismissed it as a device for over the top slicers. As you’ve pointed out the balance aspect means it works both ways.
    So I’ve been reflecting on this myself and have landed on this conclusion: my coach, along with the majority of PGA professional teachers in my experience believes in lag, more specifically, that the student should try to hold on to lag or create a lag position usually with radial deviation which in turn will induce better rotation.
    Trouble is, I believe the Gem teaches a feel which is the opposite of holding on to lag as you have concluded. The Gem teaches the correct release of trail wrist extension, and that that release starts earlier in the DS than we are commonly taught. Jack Nicklaus said that ‘you can’t release too early’ [assuming other fundamentals are in place] and the simple fact is, the Gem not only illustrates this feeling but it turns a lot of modern coaching on its head.
    And the strange thing is, I’ve found that the feeling of allowing myself to release trail hand wrist extension as early as I like frees up the whole swing. And I get more lag! By not trying to hold lag I actually get lag because I get a better sensation of where that point should be.
    I think this is because one’s brain does the addition for you. It knows where you want the low point to be, so it doesn’t apply the release until the optimal point. By not trying to hang on to extension to that point and just letting it happen, it happens.
    I’ve now got to find a coach that gets this…haha

    I picked one of those up, sent to me in the USA, when I saw it demonstrated on a competitor's RUclips channel. I love it. What is odd is that the GEM has the club head toe-up at halfway back, and through, while a lot of recent teaching says to match the leading edge of the club head with your spine.

    I am a 30+++ handicap golfer that has been trying to rekindle a terrible golf game after over a decade of letting the clubs gather dust. Taken several lessons, watched hours of videos and purchased a few training aids after careful scrutiny. The fastest positive effect on my swing has come from the GEM!! I try to spend a few minutes a day doing practice swings trying to ingrain the muscle memory and I can feel my swing smoothing out. Best of all it is taking my mind out of the swing as I am getting the proper mechanics ingrained! Feeling the "wobble" anytime my technique isn't spot on is invaluable and immediately makes me try to figure out what caused it. That way you do not just keep practicing bad mechanics!

    Hi Andy, I know I’ve messaged you before about getting one of these for Xmas, however, I’ve now had a chance to use it in my last two range sessions, and I have to say it’s the best training aid I’ve ever tried. It gets the club in a perfect position on the back swing, but more importantly for me, it’s got me releasing the club and it’s incredibly easy to use. Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention, it’s amazing. Happy new year Andy to you and your family. Melissa

    Andy, I got one after watching a video by Steve Johnston and it IS truly amazing. My miss is a flip/pull because I don't rotate enough through & past impact. I can totally feel and correct that when using the GEM. It's also essential on getting the backswing right. I haven't played much lately due to weather but I've been swinging it indoors every chance I get for the past and the few times I've been able to hit the range.
    it's starting to set in. I played last Sunday and it DOES help me make better swings on the course - I'm just using that same armpit to armpit practice swing as part of my pre-shot routine. When I really felt the GEM swing I hit some of ridiculously good shots. The one that really stands out was a 320 yd drive on my 9th hole that just felt like a nothing special smooth swing .
    The GEM is by far, the best swing training aid I've ever used. 👍👍 p.s. I'm a 9 hcp, playing in Colorado, USA

Stops you holding the face off to "create" lag. 90 perfect shots in a row at the range .....can't wait to get back on the course. One question should you feel a wobble as you release please.

    • @paramoose
      @paramoose Год назад +2

      Wobble is the indicator that something didn't go right. It's your instant feedback in that swing that your mechanics had a flaw

      No it shouldnt wobble. Thats the beauty of the feedback

    Certainly a very clever bit of equipment but also rather pricey. I can see a lot of shed doors open with DIY's searching for bits and pieces.

      I used locking pliers as a replacement and it works just the same

  • @AndrewDCDrummond

    Toe up on follow through is very 80's/Fred Couples. When you show the holding off through impact at 4.16 I think you should actually compare to many of the great swings of the past - I am think Sandy Lyle for one - who had huge power but had that right wrist in the held off position you show. I have the GEM and think that it is a fantastic tool but I am not using it in the toe up/GEM down manner they suggest (toe up on backswing is also old school/Leadbetter/Faldo, matching spine angle is more the current/Hogan view), but in a more rotational style as suggested by another YT channel, and find the weight helps feel how I should be using left and right sidebend in conjunction with the transition to keep the club slotted and the face squarer for longer through impact. Remember, as a teaching pro you have an ingrained good transition/rotation that most amateurs struggle with. It's a must buy tool imho, but not to use in the manner they suggest.

      You are probably right, locking pliers are cheaper than this, but golfers are idiots that spend extra money on better clubs and balls. Myself included. Forgive me for falling for this as my first training aid.

    £120 is far to much for what it is. £30 is more reasonable I think.

    • @andycartergolf
      @andycartergolf  Год назад +1

      Yeh, tbf i can't comment on the price. No idea what went into creating it, how much the parts cost, patenting, staff, time, the packaging, delivery etc.
      Hard the really understand without knowing isnt it.
      I just present it to you guys and leave you to decide what is a good investment and what isn't.

      @@andycartergolf Yeah I get all that bud. After giving it some thought it's around the price of 3 pro golf lessons around my way so might be something in that. £120 lasts forever rather than 3 half hour lessons which could be forgotten 😂 Plus most things golf are expensive unfortunately! ✌🏼
