What if there were one single card that you could use to travel by metro, by bus and to pay at petrol stations, tollgates, supermarkets, restaurants? Sounds great, right? But does it really work?
Every metro city in the country faces the problem of overcrowded roads and too many private vehicles. And the solution to this problem is the use of public transport. Taking a bus or a metro to your destinations sounds easy, but it is in fact quite a hassle because of the issue of last mile connectivity. Most people end up having to take multiple modes of transport to get to their destination.
In Bengaluru, there are only 2 metro lines spanning around 74km. Getting to any spot that is beyond the scope of these 74km can prove to be incredibly difficult, considering that the fleet of buses is also grossly insufficient. For a lot of people, the best option is to hail a cab or take their own vehicle.
One of the solutions that came up to combat this problem is the One Nation One Card Scheme - a unified mode of payment for all modes of public transport, and for debit transactions in retail outlets. Around 19 cities in the country issue this card, and the card issued in any of these cities can be used in any other. This is the National Common Mobility Card.
Launched in 2019, this card, issued by different banks in different cities, is supposed to work in all local modes of public transport and in retail outlets like petrol stations, tollgates and supermarkets.
In Mumbai, the scheme has been enforced almost entirely. The card works in buses and in Metro trains, and it works in retail transactions. Its implementation in local trains is pending. But what about the other metro cities, like Chennai and Bengaluru? How well does this card work? Does it serve the purposes for which it was intended?
Rukmini Ravishankar investigates.

TRUE!!!
What are you saying this is all Mistake of government all mistake of other jai *************, h*****🚩🚩🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬 and where is the debate
I travelled to Dubai, and the travel card there has the entire thing solved. Works across tram, metro and buses. And you just need to tap before and after a place, and its as easy as that. No humans required to parse anything. And really well done. I hope it gets close to that.
Indians pay poultry taxes and hope everything becomes world class just like that.
Even Parking is on nol card
Dubai is not even 5% of Delhi, we shouldn't compare, but this is very good initiative whereas still not available or being used in surplus..
Dubai had this 15 years ago..... India sure is slow
@@Keylevitationand so what? Dubai isn't even close to a random mid size state of India, the fact that u toxic people love to compare without actually looking into various facts is baffling
One nation one card has huge benefits. Much needed service in Bengaluru.
Bro but it's not working

I have used this system in Italy. It’s very convenient. One card works in bus, metro, ferry and trains.
Well researched and logically presented.
Always liked the DH coverage.
left liberal news channel though
This is working well in Sydney. One card called Opal works for Tram, bus, train and ferry as well
there's no comparision b/w india and australia. Aussies are way ahead of you chimps.
A lot of big cities around the world have this.
Does the same work at Perth or in Adelaide or Melbourne?
brisbane has GO card, it works for all trains and buses across the city and for city of goldcoast as well
@@saswatachakraborty1621
You can use your normal credit card.
It should have been 'One Nation One QR'. Solves a whole lot of problems. In Germany, you just present to the driver, a QR that gets generated on a common mobile app, who then verifies it with his own app. And this works throughout Germany.
This is in progress. Stored Value QRs shall be reality soon
Huge issues with that thing. And many times DB qr codes don't work with regional buses. Plus they have normal tickets too.
population is too much
@bhushangy8635 But the most pathetic thing about Germany is (DB) Deutsche Bahn (for those who don't know it is the German Railway). The trains are never on time, always delayed, super expensive and cancellations can happen anytime! DB itself admitted that they can only realistically achieve decent punctuality by 2070 🤣! The other annoying part is the lack of debit/credit use in smaller towns/cities in smaller retail stores or sometimes even in restaurants/bars. Germany is still living in dark ages when it comes to technology. India's UPI is the best and mobile internet coverage is better than most countries. Also, German internet data on mobile phones is expensive and network is not good across the country.
I'm from Japan. Over here you can use the exact same card (Suica/Pasmo/etc) for any and all transport including taxis. Each city has their own transportation card, but they all work interchangeably in any other city.
Nice to know but Japan doesn't even have 10% of the population of India.
@@RachaelWillThis is a non-factor considering the population of the Tokyo metropolitan area alone is 37 million, while the biggest metropolitan area in India is Mumbai with only 23 million. How can Tokyo, with a greater population than Mumbai, have world class transportation? It's because public transport has less to do with population, and more to do with flow control and healthy monetisation. I think you should think things through first before commenting!
@@aru_cha Lame comment comparing a devloped economy with less population with huge developing economy like india. Next time think unbiased maybe then you'll not compare japan with india.
@@RachaelWill It was my mistake for replying in the first place. Have a good day.
A QR on a mobile app (any mobile app of your choice) which works on the metro, bus and more is a simpler and more elegant solution.
Battery always has to be charged
True.. but the issue is BMTC isn't gonna fix that either.
You have to depend on mobile always. Not good option.
The concept is good, but there are still a lot of problems
I have been using this card since it was launched
I have used it only in metro and retail
1) Recharge can only be done in the metro station
2) A lot of buses declined it
3) Even the train ticket counter didn't accept it unless you are booking it online, where you have to pay a surcharge
Edit: To make transaction in retail shops, you have enable pos transaction and contacless payments in the app. It's in the under cards> manage section of the app.
There's so much corruption in our country that officials oppose digital money and keep cash alive. The problem is that the corruption free government is also so corrupt that it doesn't fire such corrupt employees.
Does this card require any ID like adhar or election id to buy
All this cards are there from decades in another countries. Here in India they don’t even watch this kind of videos. Just look at views. If it’s related to religion then Hindus go crazy and views go in millions.
Same card should be included for public toilets 🤣
It’s a common sense. It’s a RuPay card and issuing bank is RBL. Try enabling the online transactions for the card from RBL’s website and the Card should work for your retail purchases. Simply by loading the money from offline to online account isn’t a solution. You have to enable domestic/international/online transactions first. Which are turned off by default for your safety on RBI’s instructions. Millions of citizens have lost billions of rupees in fraud that’s why this option is turned off by default nowadays.
Don't know why it's taking govt to implement it everywhere. Indian railways and Metros already have a good card system just they need to add this card inside the payment gateway.
Because India loves bureaucracy. There’s some contractor who got some hefty commission and some politician who got kickbacks. And in typical fashion, even then nothing works.
The single biggest issue with public infrasture is the last mile connectivity. While Autos were supposed to cater to this market, they have largely become rent seeking exorbidant exploiters. Eve, Uber and Ola have become too expensive since Autos are not regularly available on their portal. The availabilty of Autos is eratic so it is not possible to trust public transport in all cases. The bike taxi is doing magic in the urban space by proving quick connectivity and it should be promoted by someways.
I think the one nation one card would work but one nation one payment method would work more like UPI integrate everything with UPI it will work
why reinvent the wheel, just allow any bank debit/credit cards for contactless payments at metro entry gates or buses etc. For ex: cities like London already have this where one can simple use any contactless debit/credit cards. We also have UPI just simply scan the QR its also better for environment (less plastic cards). For UPI or bank cards one would argue network connectivity is an issue in underground stations which anyways needs to be solved first.
Exactly my thoughts
1. This One Nation One Card totally violates Competition Act & imposes one card business on consumer. It also curtails further innovation. Modi & BJP govt says No interference in business but does opposite. Govt shud never get into business. Except Air India BJP govt has not sold any PSU. Instead every day they are getting into private life of people. Basically BJP is new Congi with socialistic & Communist ideology.
2. Mumbai BEST bus fleet size is just 3200 of which how many buses on road, no one knows. So thr is no comparison of BMTC & Mumbai BEST.
When UPI works every where, what is need of this one nation card? Let any private player get into this offline pay card. Why govt? Let them first do thr job of securing our boarders & protect India's economic interest on global platform.
well in mumbai the case is diffrent......ncmc works seemlesly in local busses as we have 100 percent smart ticketing machine in busses.....and even if the machine does not work then you get a free ride because its the bus companys fault!
Which banks ncmc card you are using?
Same in delhi works fine in metro n buses
Mean while buswale bhaiya : card nahi chalega, cash do
I'm sure all the issues will be resolved as the govt is proactive
As per my knowledge and daily commuting to Kolkata, the NCMC Card has not been implemented in Kolkata yet.
It works in Kolkata metro, east west corridor.
@saswatachakraborty1621 not yet bro. Only Smartcards, QR Coded paper based ticket, and Mobile App tickets are in use.
There is a card for govt bus. But govt bus makes up only 5%of the total bus. Hence people don't use it. As majority of the buses are privately operated
@SoumyaChowdhury-cs7qf Yes, this one is true. In future it could be used in ferries too.
Thanks for the effort you people have put into this Ma'am.
I don't understand why they had to introduce a separate NCMC card (basically a prepaid card) instead of enabling the tap-and-pay feature of the normal debit card. Things would have been much easier.
What is that man complaining about walking 500 meters? 🤣 does he want metro bridge in front of his house? This does not happen in london/paris even
We indians have never walked that far. Especially of our new generation. That seems like a large distance. We always have motorised vehicle even for 100metres. 😅
It's simple to agree and make payments through UPI rather than having an card.
That's very good journalism. I love her patience to understand the problem and visiting the metro station to find out about it.
Thank you for giving us a well researched video. DH. This is what it means to be Journalism.
metro and supermarket will still allowed it, but Buses , if you will be lucky then only you can use it, mostly they say use our ticket etc.
in tamil nadu the bus system is still ancient, still running on only cash, fully packed , old busses .....ac busses are there but not much .
Practical and useful journalism. 👍
This is such a shitty implementation just look at how world does it 🤷🏽 like just enable samsung pay or NFC payments in metro with Visa and Mastercard. Whole world does it with much simplicity😂
It just surprises me that how much India lacks behind in terms of execution of it's schemes. I am currently in Chicago and I use a similar card here for trains, buses and metro. It just works flawlessely here. We need serious upgrade.
BTW if someone is wondering what is it called here, it's called Ventra Card.
Surprise about what? Have you never been in india before? USA has infrastructure but such an expensive country to live in. No need to compare usa to india.
Its already working in indonesia since 2015 its not just for public transport the card can even use in vending machine, toll booth and parking area. ( it can be use in all of mode transportation across indonesia not just in one city) japan was also the samething it even can be use in RFID.
For use of ncmc cards in buses, instead of having conductors have the ticket machine we could have tap machines on the bus where you tap when you enter the bus and tap when you exit the bus. If you don't tap when you exit, you will be charged for the entire journey.
Excellent reporting, I am from Delhi and I have faced many problems regarding NCMC card, when tried to ask customer care at Delhi metro then they were actually clueless and since I have SBI RUPAY NCMC card, I visited SBI branch even bank don't have any any idea what card is this? Now I just use my SBI NCMC Card in Delhi metro that's it,even on SBI Debit card it is written debit +prepaid card but SBI bank was even clueless what prepaid feature that debit card have so the conclusion is it is good government of India developing new technology for convenience of common people but implementation should be complete and well organised, most important staff on metro station or wherever those facilities are provided there should be trained enough people with full knowledge to give information and help people
I had the SBI NCMC card for the past 2 years. But never used on Chennai Metro. Last month went to a metro station and asked them to load money. They tried(women) and told me it won't work. I tried with other metro station they(MEN) activated my card and loaded money. I used it flawlessly on the WIFI symbol present in AFC. SBI NCMC (debit + prepaid) actually works.😃😃😃
Why not just enable all debit/credit cards for this? Is there a need for a special card?
Simplest option but that is not what the thug govt wants. It wants one ram rajya card to rule them all.
in mumbai sbi card u can recharge only on metro station
You can recharge it online after first recharge
Those NCMC cards which are issued by Bank is best.
But to use those cards in Metro, we have to recharge it once at metro station counter
We get SBI Card only at metro stations also in Mumbai.
Can't recharge online ?
@@zinchh
We can
But for the very first time, we have to recharge it in the metro station
@@AdityaKantKushwaha Ohh Okay 👍🏻
@@AdityaKantKushwahaThat first time recharge that you are referring to is not just the addition of balance, the metro counter person actually does a service area addition to the NCMC card which makes it compliant with that mode of transport. So if the card was issued by Bengaluru metro, it would already have the Bengaluru service area written to it and would work on Namma metro seamlessly but if you try to use it on Mumbai metro it will fail even if it has offline balance on it until you take it to the Mumbai metro ticket counter and ask them to write the Mumbai service area to it. Each NCMC can hold a limited number of service areas on it and after it reaches its limit then you have to remove one service area to add a new one.
Our normal bank debit cards should just introduce an offline wallet. These card should be made to work as NCMC, also you can save these cards in your phone if your phone has built-in NFC
there is no need to introduce an offline wallet, places like milan and london just use contactless payments to operate the gates, the total cost is tallied at the end of the day and charged, if the charge bounces, the card is blacklisted, also works with any card from any country that has contactless
@@AnoujRajput even better then 👍. Here, people generally feel insecure with contactless payments although there's a user defined daily limit
This card works in retail outlets with both tap and with pin seamlessly just like any other debit card. I have been using this card since a while now.
Bro but it's is showing increase your limit but I have full limit to it
Walking 500 + 500 meters is not possible? 500 meter takes hardly 8 minutes......This is serious problem. We in Sydney easily walk upto 1.5 KM each end. Walking is good for health.
not even 8 min
Maybe heat is the issue. People don’t want to be sweaty when they have just reached the office. Maybe improper planning of the footpaths or hawkers occupying space meant for walking. Waste lying by the roadside. Many reason could be there for uncomfortable experience of walking in indian roads as compared to some other country.
Yes I agree. Time and infrastructure is a factor as well. But it also depends on how far you need to go, and the frequency of metro. If you need to travel, say 20 km then metro is far better considering traffic etc. But if it is only 5 to 6 km, then metro could be a mockery for that.
Another thing is, if there is plan to return late at night, then definitely, public transport is not an option.
Not sure about Bengaluru and other cities, but the Mumbai 1 NCMC card launched by MMRDA is free of charge, only requires filling of a form and a short KYC process, whatever you pay, gets added as balance in your card, so your thumbnail "Should you buy the NCMC?" is misleading
The girl looks like shupnakha. Please take beautiful girls to increase the reach.
Good story by DH. This National Mobility Card can be a game changer. Hope Union & State govts. work in unison to implement it flawlessly.
much needed video.. very detailed and informative
Rukmini has done thorough research, asked good questions, explored various scenarios with boots on the ground. That is good Journalism!
I can still see this being a common card across India for metros and in retail stores. As long as bus services are run by local govt, forget using this card for bus service.
Very well made video. Kudos!
The card is a great idea. However, having a mobile app for it (like the UPI example) would be even better as we won't have to carry a separate card. I do not carry a wallet everywhere, however I always have my mobile with me.
But nevertheless, even the card is a great solution as it integrates so many modes of transport across multiple cities!
Interesting point -in delhi my NCMC card doesn't work on 25% AFC gates. It doesn't work at Balance Enquiry Machines installed at Metro Stations.
I think it's just a half cooked project
Delhi has good system in this sense I believe
This is what i call great journalism, and it's missing on traditional news channels.
One Hindu state from Newyork, usa
Why is NCMC card is being shown as RBL card only ? 22 Banks in India issue NCMC cards. This is misleading to a certain extent
I never saw this card ever
This is need of the hour. In London also they have caed called Oysters card solves exactly same problem. Public systems should always aim for officiency. The less tax payers money gets watsed, better it is.
This card should be implemented in bmtc
Bmtc conductors will oppose. With cash, they atleast had the option to use that money for cigarettes or gutkas.
Even in ordinary bmtc buses, there’s a QR code provided by Canara bank and only very few buses actually display it. I have used it on 112, a few times. Sometimes some conductors accept PhonePe payments also, but that’s again @ the discretion of the conductor. High time QR ticketing comes to bmtc also…
@@sunboat800 The issue is Conductors wont get their secondary income if UPI is used, that's why they hide it. It pisses me off that i have to carry change for entering a bus. Getting small denominations like ₹5,₹10,₹20 is really difficult in Bengaluru.
How's that? here in UP roadways, they have to give you tickets if you give them money, it's only sometimes when conductor overcharge for UPI(no official way to pay using UPI)and basically makes payment by himself using cash.@@ku5285
I think UPI is the way forward for everything. It's in the name, Universal Payment Interface. It's sophisticated, safe, robust, real time, flawless and works across platforms. It's the first and only thing that India is ahead of the rest of the world.
This concept works Overseas but very difficult in India. Honesty, Wide spread adoption of technology, Stringent policies and rules etc. missing in the system even to this day how will this work.
This shit doesn’t work
Does it give discount? For example, if you purchased it in Bengaluru, do you get discount in namma metro? If purchased in Delhi, do you get discount in Delhi Metro?
No connection from where you have bought it from. It depends if particular metro is offering discount on NCMC card or not.
London has Oyster card specifically which can be used for underground and Buses also Singapore has a card I remember when I was there in 2010 . Yes we are very behind compared to these countries in payment process
U can use this card in super market but only in authorised markets like more reliance to buy non alcoholic stuffs online.worked in big basket as well.
Another good initiative by Central Govt. Hope this will be another success like UPI. This will also help mobility across different cities.
NCMC card is a tried and tested system across the world. Unfortunately we intend to build Rome in a day. We should first increase adoption by syncing up all the metro systems in the country. Only then expand to other modes/supermarkets etc with 10% cash back 😊. The savings and popularity will then drive government agencies to implement it quickly.
Present status or quarterly position may be given to public for its improvement.
More vedios require for इंप्रोवमे त of public transpoert.
I tell you one thing which works everywhere you just need it in large amounts ! .... Any guesses - Cash ! .... Ha ! .... India is building these backbone digital infrastructure .... So it is a hotchpotch of everything ! .... Cash it works everywhere ! .... Cash is the king as they say ! .... 🙏 .... 😎 ....
57000 trips so even if every trip have 35 people in it. It makes 57000x35 = ~2M. City with population of 14m thats a good number of people travelling with public transport every day.
Not working😮
500m one side, 500m on other side, can't walk. If anyone thinks he's being lazy, that's actually true about the majority of urban people throughout the world.
The average maximum walking distance is 150m.
Benefits of nol cards
With Dubai's public convenience in mind, RTA introduced the nol card as the way to travel around the Emirate. Cash will not be accepted for payment to use RTA’s various means of public transport.
You can travel around Dubai and pay for parking using a single card
You no longer need to carry cash or worry about correct change
You will enjoy low cost fares and flexible transfers across different modes of transport
You can enjoy having special fares for different concession types of nol blue card (for Students, Senior Citizens and Residents and People of Determination).
The buses have the scanners at the sides of the entry attached to the stands.
What is the point if it will not work on BMTC. I think BMTC staff and mgmt are trying hard to enforce cash for OBVIOUS REASONS. We could get rid of conductors on buses and buy much needed new buses with the money saved. Also pilferage of cash and other crimes by the staff will reduce, increasing collections and make BMTC highly profitable. Right now most of the fare is going into pockets of employees
With focused government support, widespread NFC adoption in smartphones has the potential to transform travel in India. By linking a nationwide travel app to a phone's NFC capabilities, travelers could utilize either UPI or NFC-based payments (online or offline), similar to existing metro card systems. This initiative would eliminate the need for physical cards and cash while traveling. The government's ongoing development of UPI-based ATMs further supports this vision, offering a seamless transition away from cards towards UPI-enabled transactions. Such a system would provide speed, safety, and unparalleled convenience for travelers across Bharat.
I got the NCMC card from PNB, but its been a headache since...
I went to Delhi Metro for service creation, still it doesn't work at AFC🤦🤦♀️
Is it working in Bangalore metro?
PNB Debit card cum NCMC card not working in Bangalore metro for me.
@@sharath_n I live in Delhi and isn't working for me in Delhi metro😅
Just better to have any debit/credit/digital card usable in metro and buses like in London
Cards are outdated to start with, no one wants to fill up their wallet with 10 different cards and make it a 3 inch wallet, those days are gone. India is far ahead of other nations in digitalisation of financial transactions and that is the way to go. When UPI works in every city in India, can work in buses, metro, autorickshaw etc, retail outlets, panwala shop, etc then why do we need a card which does only part of it?? As for those who don't own a smartphone, those very people would also not own this card for sure. So through this card we are trying to solve a problem which doesn't exist and this video should have focused on that. We should only be working on deeper integration of UPI into everything.
I've been using this card in Bengaluru metro. PIN is provided as part of the welcome kit along with the card. There is also an option to reset the PIN in the app. Only challenge i face is even in offline mode the amount has to be updated on the tapping machine at the metro station unlike the old smart cards which get recharged at the metro gate
If something like a common digital platform is made available that can be used in all transport service available in the country. Then we might not need to have multiple apps or cards to use. Only the thing is that the cost of it along with user experience. As of now when UPI is available life got very easy. But yet many transport service including bus and auto needs to use that service. Auto guys if made educated and supported with all kinds of help then we can really use it for payment. But they avoid it. Many such issuss must be studied well and then only execute it.
You talk about Kolkata? They haven't yet been rolled out here! The govt buses, ferries have seperate smart card system than that of metros..... And guess what, none of them is NCMC compliant AT ALL
Though India is the largest software hub outside the US, it lacks in adopting new technology(especially in govt dept) because the governments are not willing to do. If you go to cities like Singapore and Dubai they have implemented this one card way back in 2007. For example if you visit any government website you can feel how user-unfriendly is it. The website are designed in such a way for most things the common man should go through an agent.
Very informative.Didnt know this exists in India. I think the tech shouldn't be limited to a specific card .A user should be able to use any plastic money across these terminals. Yes there may be varying charges depending on the card (rupay/visa/mc). I saw this in london.
Recommend not to buy this card. Until card works fine no issues, if issue starts customer care of Ongo and RBL bank is so pathetic. Suddenly the app stops working or card not working. Customer care takes days or weeks together to resolve the issue. If the card is lost any other issue Namma Metro customer care cannot help. Also the offline amounts cannot be transferred. There is no Kannada language support with Ongo customer care. So choice is yours. Not sure why Namma metro is recommending this card. ...
NCMC isn't accepted in West Bengal. I live in Kolkata and State buses doesn't support it and even Kolkata metro be it maintained by Indian Railways or KMRCL.
Such a big hassle
It should be as simple as TFL Oyster card.
Thank you DH for explaining.
HI DH team kindly make a video about the new Japan technology traffic signal which is installed in 28 junctions .It will be very useful to know about it.I heard from march it will be operational 😊
Debit card thing works just fine. As per RBI guidelines all transactions on POS and via NFC are disabled by default on all debit cards you need to manually switch it on for it to work.
Canara Bank must implement Mobility Card @ Bangalore.
As Canara Bank Head Office is Bangalore.
this one card already works in UAE countries so they can copy this, UAE has given good facitlity for bus, metro . the bus is also complete digital. no need to pay any money manually
All the coverage is great! But As Journalists Pls raise these questions directly to authorities , what's so difficult for the authority to implement it for the improving people's life! Don't conclude it with inconclusive answers jus lyk the gov!
What is hell upi is good but Card idea sound not good how i can't explain it hmm look UPI useful because i don't have My card 💳 debit or credit tension all so Sounds like Chapri of City etc etc i can't explain but negative vide Communist type every thing is One One Only One
Good concept, but clearly not implemented well enough.
Once the central govt pushes it harder I think it will be implemented properly.
They should leverage UPI as a digital card. We already use UPI as the preferred payment method everywhere, so they should introduce a digital card based on UPI and QR scans for payments.
UPI apps should introduce the same one nation one card concept but digitally, people can have their accounts created
This is really good reality check of ground reality and how journalism should be. Good work 👍🏻
It would be much simpler if it had only single account, you can use to pay for everything. No online, offline, and different amounts in each, it just adds to the confusion.
When UPI works everywhere and there is UPI Lite facility for these kind of transactions where PIN is not necessary for transactions less than 500, I guess using the facility of UPI is way better.
NCMC is very good initiative but need to get a digital app to link with the card. Then why not skip the card and use mobile first aporoach? (NFC or QR codes)
Chalo works in Mumbai, but does not serve Navi Mumbai
The new metro line only has cash/upi payments that too only from the counter.... the suburban local trains are far better as they have Vending machines which work on contactless payment options
This is an outdated solution. Many countries implemented this decades before and now they r enabling the scanning devices to support any credit/debit cards or even Google/Apple/smart watch wallets. I really dont know why india implements these kinda essential needs with an outdated solution the developed countries used decades before and moved on with something innovative and latest in technology. We start implementing these basic things very late but atleast why not implement with a latest technology. Take toll for example. Other countries automatically scans the vehicles that use a tollroad, no need to even slow down. Yet our country implement this outdated solution called Fasttag. Our country cant say the usual story like we are developing nation, take mobile networks, our country is far advanced than many developed countries, may be because the mobile networks are privatized they are always keen in terms of technology adoption. But anything the govt does seems to be totally outdated
About using the NCMC card in shops and retail places. The way it works with the Pune metro card is that there is a "online" card balance and a separate "offline" chip balance. The online card balance is the one that is used in retail shops and the chip balance gets used at the metro station.
I have verified that this works with my card and with my friends card. I have also used this in Bengaluru metro and confirmed that it works there as well.
Please make this note in the video
