Colin definitely doesn't know Pen has feelings for him. Not even after she asked for that kiss. He takes her at her word that she doesn't expect more (and reads it as she doesn't *want* more) because, like Pen, Colin is very insecure about his own worth and desirability.

    • @Sytrylt
      @Sytrylt 3 месяца назад +87

I agree ! We can see it later in the carriage scene. His reaction at her first response is quite clear, in my opinion. And extremely well played by Luke Newton, I might add ! Because I was about to cry, when I saw the look he gave her, at that moment.

He definitely doesn't know her feelings! He's so oblivious, like most guys irl!
You see that in the scene under the willow tree, where both Pen and him are so awkward. She wants to end the "lessons" with him, and he's hoping it's because she too felt something between them after that kiss. But she basically rejects him under that tree, leaving him to feel more insecure about himself.
I've been in this exact situation before with a guy friend, so I know exactly this feeling. I've learned since then that it is SO much better to be open and just communicate your feelings. Don't try to play it cool because you're afraid of rejection--which I feel is exactly what Colin has been doing this whole time.

I didn't see it as a pitty kiss.
They both have feelings for each other. Colin may not understand it, or feel it as romantic, but she is his best friend and she makes him happy...She asked him for one thing...and I think he was just chomping at the bit to do something, anything to show her his gratitude for the years of kindness and friendship. especially since the rumor got out and they would most likely not be allowed to see each other anymore. As you said, it was a hail mary, a goodbye.
She wanted a kiss and she trusted Colin, and Colin trusted her enough to know she wouldn't try and trap him in marriage because he kissed her.

When he leaned in, and then he went in again, it was not a pity kiss. He was full on into it. Then she says with a heartfelt, quivering "Thank you," - nothing more - and leaves him with 'the vapers' and confusion, and that's when he realizes, "Oh no. O.O. ...I think I like her. Like, like-like her."
To quote a well known linguistics Professor, a certain Mr. Henry Higgins played by the talented late Rex Harrison:
    "Damn, damn, damn damn!
... I've grown accustomed to her face.
She almost makes the day begin.
I've grown accustomed to the tune she whistles night and noon.
Her smiles, her frowns, her ups, her downs - are second nature to me now.
Like breathing out and breathing in.
I was serenely independent and content before we met.
Surely I could always be that way again.
    And yet--
I've grown accustomed to her look.
    Accustomed to her voice.
    Accustomed... to her ...face."
    :)

I like how the book portrayed their relationship: Colin *was* nice to Penelope all those years out of pity. Once they were more mature (she was comfortable showing her true personality and he was ready to settle down), he wished he had gotten to know her sooner and started to wonder why no one else noticed her. Even got angry abt no one noticing her 😂 By the time of the kiss, he only hesitated bc he WAS feeling attraction to her, but didn’t know what it meant yet. And sometimes love is like that! It comes on you slowly, esp if you aren’t used to examining your feelings. Colin def used humor to avoid serious questions he had abt his purpose and calling. Penelope could see that they were right for each other a long time before he did ❤️

Colin's nod to her at the wedding is so precious. It's the mark of true, lasting love imo. He's still pissed and he'll go back to being pissed, but there's such a solid baseline of love and friendship, that they're able to go back to that for a little while and just live in the moment. There are some folks who have pieced together fan edits that have all of the times Colin is in denial of his feelings for Penelope starting from Season 1. It's interesting to watch those just to see their interactions back to back without breaking away for other storylines. Penelope has truly been head over heels for the boy for years, and he obviously feels something for her that is different, but he isn't aware enough to recognize it. To be fair to Colin, he also gets these signals from his older brothers and his peers about what he's supposed to be doing/experiencing as a man in this time period which also keeps him from recognizing it. There is another interaction Pen and Colin have just after the "Your eyes are a remarkable shade of blue..." scene, where she reads one of his journals and he catches her and loses his temper. It shows that behind the bravado and deflecting humor, he's actually a very sensitive and vulnerable person, which is not what a "man" is supposed to be in that day and age. In that interaction, she bandages up a cut on his hand, and you can see the wheels turning in his head through the expressions on his face and how his hands respond to her holding them. But he still doesn't understand what it means, and it doesn't click until "the kiss", where instead of the distance he usually feels when he is intimate with a lady (part of the journals Penelope read), he gets the full on 4th of July fireworks show. For Penelope, I think that this is not a Hail Mary to try to get Colin's attention. I think for her, this is a "That's it, I'm really just going to be a spinster," moment and she is saying goodbye to the possibility of love. It's why she ends it with "Thank you." I think she really believes that it's a pity kiss, and she's thanking him for letting her go on the shelf at least with that one experience.

      Yes this was it..
The kiss was romantic for us the viewers but it was a sad moment for pen. It was the moment that she sort of closed the door to any kind of happiness she dreamed for especially with Colin….. it was goodbye for her but for Colin, it was a moment of awakening. A moment in which all those things he’d been feeling made sense finally for him. The feelings had always been there. He just didn’t make sense of it like you said!
He was just so affected by that kiss. He initiated the second kiss.. you could see how he furrowed his brows and his breathing and it was almost as if he was grief stricken over the fact that what he had been looking for had been infront of him the whole time and he didn’t see it

I completely agree. And from pen's pov she 100% thought he would never ever see her as anything but a friend. Marina told her she is basically Eloise to him, a lifetime of him not seeing her as a woman at all but just "pen", the ton/family's opinion that basically no one would ever see her like that, and colin's literal words last season that the idea alone is laughable. She didn't ask him to kiss her cause she was trying to start something. She was ending something. She was closing the book on her fantasy of being loved in general. She was at the "mom/the ton is right and I will die alone, lets just accept that reality and not torm*nt myself any longer" stage. But she wanted to at least know what it feels like and colin was the guy she felt most safe/confident around to actually ask. She was basically going "thank you, now I can cross it off of my bucket list". Clinical and thats why she had no emotional shift afterwards. Cause she thought it had no mean whatsoever. But he sure did cause colin is demis*xual. He needs an emotional connection. Which is why he felt a distance with the ladies in paris. Colin is first and foremost a Feeler, good for him. 👍😃 So to experience pen with whom he already had a bond, turned his world upside down.

So I left a note in his locker expressing my affection and hope to go out together… and I hid and waited to see his reaction… and his friends were with him and he made a big show about being grossed out by it and it shattered my tiny heart. And at the time I felt stupid and pathetic but looking back on it now I wish I could hug younger me and tell her how brave it is to take the risk and put yourself out there. I wish I could explain to her that he may not have even felt so grossed out but boys in front of their friends at that age have to be “too cool” to be interested in a girl. I wish I could go back and sew her tiny heart back together because that little broken heart wouldn’t reach out again for another 10 years.

I felt a huge gut punch when Penelope overheard Colin's comment about her to his friends. I have *been* Penelope. Many times, and watching their relationship blossom over the 3 seasons was so validating (minus my not finding someone...yet, I guess?). Seeing her confidence and finding herself, then especially standing up to Colin when he is a big sulky baby after she tells him she is going to take care of her own issues was really empowering throughout the whole season even with the roller coaster of their relationship (which tbh I wish had been explored more because everything felt so abrupt and shortened because they crammed another relationship in there).
I have to say though, I somewhat disagree with how you mentioned that Colin was finally realizing that she saw him as more than a friend when she made the comment about his eyes. In season 2, he had gone to see his ex-fiancée Marina (from season 1) who was married to someone else now - and she told him flat out to appreciate the love he already has around him. From his family. From Penelope specifically (who Marina knew was in love with Colin). And I think it was when they danced together at the ball, he made a comment about not having seen or appreciating her before. I think he did kiss her not out of pity but because he knew she believed that this was going to never happen for her and he wanted to make sure that she did kiss someone who cared about her instead of someone who would be taking advantage of her. And I think her breathing heavily came more from nerves/anxiety than anything else because it took SO MUCH for her to be vulnerable especially with Colin because of her feelings. And when she runs away after the kiss and he is standing there stunned I joked with a friend that the little lightbulb was starting to flicker on in his head because he is starting to realize that...yeah, he actually has feelings for Penelope but he still has no idea how she feels (especially since he agreed to help her try to find a husband). As far as he knows, she asked him for that kiss because she was comfortable with him - especially with her comments about how she would never expect anything of it, would never ask him for more, etc. I mean, later in the season (IYKYK) when he finally decides to tell her how he feels, her immediate response is to not believe him and say "But Colin, we're friends." and you can see that he thinks he blew it because he still at that moment doesn't know she is also in love with him. And at their engagement party when she's trying to tell him she's Whistledown (and has a panic attack), he tries to calm her down and says that he understands if she no longer feels about him and that she had just gotten caught up in the moment in the carriage. Just my 2 cents, having watched the whole relationship unfold over 3 seasons and relating to Pen not just from the feeling invisible viewpoint but also what she deals with at home.

I love pen and Colin's relationship- they have the strongest most realistic relationship I have seen so far and I love it- they pick up when something is wrong with the other, Colin gives her space to tell when she is ready. I love that when they talk outside of the modiste he is actively listening- he asks her questions, he doesn't yell at her, he stays calm, he doesn't run away, and she genuinely answers them - it's clear it's more about his jealousy and his fear for her safety then her actually being whistledown. When he said that she entrapped him he clearly said that out of pain and anger because she didn't entrap him- he is the one who initiated sex, she repeatedly gives him an out and he doesn't take it because he knows deep down that she didn't do that he is just deeply hurt that she kept that a secret and he loves her and wants to marry her. it's obvious how much he wants to be physically intimate with her but is holding back because he is still processing all of this new information which I love- when he opens the door and she is standing there and you see him almost go in and kiss her but he restrains himself even though he wants to because he is not ready. He deeply loves her and for him to have sex with her when they are not in a good place isn't fair to her or him- so by not having sex he is respecting both of them. The first show runner also said that Colin is supposed to be demisexual so him not wanting to have sex when the are not in a good space makes sense- he feels disconnected to her and having sex with her because he is still processing so much new information and feels emotionally separated from her at the moment makes complete sense. It has been ingrained in him that it is a mans job to provide for and protect his wife, so when she says she can take care of herself and he says then what good am I to you, you can feel the pain, pen is independent and doesn't need him in that way, she just needs him for him and it takes some time for him to accept the role reversal

The argument outside the modiste. To the nod at the wedding and the viewer thinking everything will be ok again. Then sleeping on the couch after the wedding even though he still has an obvious attraction to her still. When he has the conversation with Cressida and you know that HE knows he's already forgiven her for being LW but he was really just upset that she kept something from him and now he has to keep it from everyone else including his family. And the way Pen realized when Colin fails to save her from the blackmail that he is upset because he thinks he has to earn her love.

In the book Pen of course asks for the kiss, pretty much the exact same way that it happened in the show. But we get to see into Colins mind when she does. It was gradual, but he started developing feelings for her before the kiss. He was even starting to become attracted to her. So when she asks him to kiss her, he wants to hold himself back because he knew as soon as he accepted, there would be no going back for him. He knew he would essentially be hers. But after she said please he had no resolve left to prevent himself from kissing her. So he didnt do it out of pity or really compassion, it was genuinely pure love. The show obviously has no inner monolouges to show Colins rising love and attraction for Pen, but they do try showing it in small ways. Like with the way he looks at her at the ball where she shows off her new look. The look he gives her when they shake hands. The compliment she gives him about his eyes. Of course the lamp breaking scene. And even righr after she talks to the man in the wheel chair, where he shows genuine jealousy. The show isnt as obvious as a book but the romance was growing even before the kiss. But it was perhaps more obvious to them both after it had occured.

I absolutely loved the kiss scene. It is so sweet and honestly it didn't come across to me as sexual exactly but more emotional and just full of love. I don't think it was a bad thing for her to ask, especially in context of the era in which she lived. Having never been kissed is something that can weigh on a person, you want that feeling you want to know what it's like to feel that with somebody that you care about. And I think she's very lonely because she has never experienced that sort of relationship.
I also don't think he knew that he loved her before the kiss. The show pretty clearly illustrates that it was the kiss that connected the dots in his head. Like he kissed her because she's his friend and he wanted to comfort her. Not out of pity but like you said, out of compassion. But I don't think he knew what his true feelings were for her until the kiss happened. I absolutely believe he loved her deeply, but he just didn't realize it was a romantic love until after the kiss. Gosh, rewatching that scene just now in this video almost made me cry. It was just so sweet, I loved it so much.

When she gave him this huge compliment while they were pretending to be at a ball, and he looked at her stunned and in shock, I thought that her words were just giving him feelings. Which he already began to have when he cut his hand and she took care of the wound and touched his hand (which was super uncommon back then)... What do you think? Also when she asked him to kiss her I still read it as something a friend would do for you and not necessarily her revealing her feelings. He ruined her wedding (as did his sister), he was throwing harsh ultimatums left and right, but he never tried to understand why she writes this column, how alone and overlooked she felt. He was also jealous of her accomplishments. Colin doesn't even romance or court her, because fat chicks don't get romance, instead he leads the relationship with his libido and no consideration of her, then accuses her of trapping him with sex (that he initiated with an 18 y/o virgin). The thing about Colin's oblivion is that he mistakes ALL of Pen's body language, and subtle hints, as nothing because he's got her in the Bestie Zone. He says hed never court her, not in your wildest fantasies, because she's his best friend and she's 'a catch' for another man. He wants to fit in but the men, and Pen, both mistake his words for distaste instead of respect. He views her hints as kindness. He sees her heavy breathing not as excitement, but as Pen on the verge of tears. He's a dunderhead until the moment he kisses her and feel the fireworks. I think the first kiss is a pity kiss, but that breath, pause, and going in for the second kiss/passionate make-out is ALL emotion and attraction and you can see the sparklers in Colin's eyes as Pen runs off into the garden, embarrassed and confused.

I don't really think that Colin ever realized that Penelope had feelings for him but I don't think it was because he wasn't paying attention but rather that he also had feeling for her under the surface so their relationship always just felt normal to him. They were always looking for each other at any event
He always was alone with her even when he shouldn’t be…
Her comments about his eyes being remarkable shade of blue left him speechless and flustered and the whole scene in the drawing scene
I strongly believe he never loved marina. He thought it was love but it wasn’t and thus it makes sense that he still didn’t have any other romantic experience to understand his feelings for pen
The kiss was what opened his eyes because already he stated that being intimate with women left him feeling lonely and distant… It made sense that it was something remotely sexual (a kiss) that helped him realise it!

Definitely not a pity kiss and definitely not Penelope begging for a kiss. I see it as she was at rock bottom in that moment, public humiliation and her mom basically kicking her while she was down. But sometimes in those lowest moments, you find courage. I see Pen as deciding right then to take ownership of her first kiss - it was very brave. And it was a request she made to a trusted friend - she couldn't have done that with anyone else. And for Colin, to be able to comply/acquiesce showed he trusted her not to entrap him (very scandalous if they were caught in Regency times). Most beautiful first kiss every portrayed on TV show. So sweet/gentle.

Colin could've stopped with the first little kiss. That couldve been it. When faced with the opportunity he went back. She was innocent in the whole process and even thanked him in the end. She didn't realize that the first kiss, may have been out of friendly compassion, but that second bit, that was because HE wanted to kiss her. While Colin states that hes just trying to be the man everyone wants him to be, its not who he truly is. He has felt something underneath for her all these years but society's expectations of him have made him hide or push down any possibility. He also struggles with his purpose and worth. Only after he acknowledges that she has seen and loved the real him does he release that armor. I love them in the books and in the show. To be truly seen and loved just as you are is a gift and I am so happy that they eventually figure that out.

I think it is a pity-kiss for his good friend when they are apart. As he moves in it turns to compassion. After their lips touch, it turns to desire. And when she flees, it becomes confusion and surprise.

Colin wants to kiss her. I know his internal monologue from the books, but he loves Pen. He just doesn't realise he loves Pen until this moment. He's also just spent a whole episode chasing her about, getting jealous over other guys and bribing her maid in the middle of the night to see her. He's down bad and he can see how beautiful she is

I don’t think when she complements his eyes and how the shine brighter when he is kind. A compliment to both his looks and his inner self that most don’t realize matter to him. that he thought she saw him as more than a friend since clearly after the kiss he is freaking out thinking he has feelings for her that aren’t reciprocated. I think when she gave him that compliment his reaction was more to that fact that, oh wow what she said to me really stirred up feelings for me. Knowing as we know that they write to each other every time he goes away and also that he looks for her at every assembly because what she tells him and how she views the world really resonates with who Colin truly is inside not the him he shows society. I think he had never really evaluated what pen made him feel. And this moment was an oh my god moment because what she told him was a flirtatious compliment about him rather than a general assessment of the world around them. He now starts to see that she can make him feel things he has never felt before not as a friend but as a man.

The first Colin and Penelope kiss reminds me very much of Christian Bale and Kirsten Dunst's performance of Laurie & Amy in Little Women (1994) " I promise to kiss you before you die. " I thought it was a sweet, delicate touch. I think the Bridgerton books does the book kiss a tad differently so I really appreciated the changes Netflix made.

I love that Colin talking to the other guys at the end of season 2 with Penelope overhearing mirrors when Kate hears Anthony saying he's not interested in being in love. I think it's such a great moment connecting storylines/siblings/love stories, and really shows Colin's arc of trying to be the way he's "supposed to" across seasons.

I'm clearly in the minority on this, but I don't think Colin was being insulting or dismissive towards Penelope at the end of season 2. It makes perfect sense that she would take it that way, and even that the audience would, since she's our viewpoint character. But that's because of our natural human tendency to assume the worst. We see that playing out in multiple ways in the scene where she confronts him about it. He compliments her dress and she assumes he's mocking her. He wants to find a place where they can talk alone, and she assumes it's because he's embarrassed to be seen with her. But we the audience just saw him interrupt a conversation with two men (who were part of that same group from season 2) to express concern over her, and then when they tried to dismiss her, he straight up ditched them to go check on her with no pretense whatsoever. And earlier at the garden party, he not only sought her out in broad daylight, but she was the only person he spoke to individually, which would clearly single her out to anyone who was paying attention. He is _clearly_ not ashamed to be seen with her. But it makes sense that, in her hurt, anger, and embarrassment, she would assume that was the reason.
The same goes for his comment at the ball in season 2. What did he really say? That he wouldn't dream of courting her. But as much as it hurts Penelope (and us) to hear, that isn't actually an insult. There are plenty of reasons you might not date someone that have nothing to do with their worth or desirability. Including the fact that, as far as Colin knew, Penelope only saw _him_ as a friend. Her crush is obvious to us, but we have to remember that we've seen soooo much that he hasn't. He only has a fraction of the evidence we do. Plus, with his insecurities, he would never attribute her attentions to love- he just assumes it's all because she's his friend. Even after the scene in the drawing room, and their first kiss, when you keep saying he has to know. But you're saying that as an impartial observer, with nothing emotional or personal at stake, and as someone who knows that he is worthy of love (he doesn't). No matter how obvious it seems to us, he is genuinely oblivious to it. This is confirmed when he asks his mom in the next episode how to know if his feelings are reciprocated. He has *no idea* that she feels the same way. In the same way that she was completely surprised by his declaration in the carriage, despite his obvious intensity when he approached her at the ball, and the fact that he *_couldn't stop looking at her lips!_* But she never expected him to return her feelings, so she rewrites and reinterprets all the signs in her head. And that's what he's been doing with her all along.
All the "insult" of his comment comes from the motives _we_ ascribe to it. We assume he's embarrassed for those men to think he's courting her. Why else would he deny it so emphatically? (I'll get to that in a minute). We assume it's because he thinks she's unattractive or undesirable. We assume he's saying that the very idea of courting her is laughable. But he doesn't actually say any of that. In fact, we have never seen a single hint that he sees her as anything less than wonderful. We've seen his obvious admiration of her numerous times in the first two seasons. This season, when he's coaching her, all his advice boils down to "be yourself" because he knows she's amazing. She just has to learn to let it show. When she recoils at the idea of flirting with a viscount, his only response is to remind her that she's Penelope Featherington. He knows she's a catch that a viscount would be lucky to get.
To be fair, his wording is unnecessarily emphatic. But there are lots of possible reasons for that which fit his character and their relationship much better than him being dismissive of or insulting his best friend, who he's always been super protective of, and who he just promised to take care of less than an hour ago. To some extent, there's the platonic friend who is simply tired of explaining for the thousandth time that no, they are NOT dating their friend, and yes, they REALLY are just friends. Whose denials get more emphatic with each repetition because people can't seem to accept it. Then there's the fact that there clearly _are_ some unrecognized feelings there, which only lends strength to his denial. He protests too much. But he's denying his interest, not her desirability. Add to that the fact that he has no idea of her feelings, which might put him on the defensive... denying any desire to court her because he assumes she wouldn't want to court him. We see Penelope doing the exact same thing after their first kiss... emphatically declaring it will never happen again (and breaking his heart in the process) because she assumes he wouldn't want to do it again.
His response this season supports this. Colin is generally a really sweet, thoughtful guy, always thinking about the feelings and needs of those around him, especially Penelope. If he had decided to make fun of her to those men, even if it was just social pressure in the moment, he would feel guilt about it afterwards. It would probably haunt him for a while. What he wouldn't do is immediately forget it like any other random comment. And yet, when Penelope brings it up, he seems to have no idea what she's talking about. Even when he goes to apologize to her, he doesn't mention anything beyond what she said... he doesn't seem to remember the incident at all.
Consider that Penelope cut him off immediately after that conversation, and he spent the better part of a year wondering why. Colin is always quick to assume the blame when those around him are upset, even when it has nothing to do with him. And yet in this case, when he truly is at fault, it doesn't even cross his mind? He assumed she was simply living her life and didn't need him, like the rest of his family. This conversation wasn't even a flicker on the edge of his consciousness. It never even occurred to him that he might have hurt or offended her, because he didn't think he said anything hurtful or offensive. Colin is always quick to apologize anytime he wrongs someone, no matter how big or small the offense- we see this multiple times even just this season. And yet in this case, he didn't apologize until Penelope brought it up... because that's the first time he realized there was anything to apologize for.
None of this lets him off the hook. Regardless of his intentions, he _did_ hurt her, and he might have hurt her chances with those other eligible gentlemen, if they took his comment the way Penelope and the audience did. She has every right to be upset about it and to tell him so. But it makes no sense for him to step so far outside his own character as to make fun of his best friend like that, and yet not even remember doing it or feel any lingering guilt over it. It seems clear to me that it was a hurtful mistake, rather than dismissiveness or trying to win the approval of his peers. And to his credit, when it's brought to his attention he immediately owns up to it, apologizes without making any excuses, and tries to make amends.

I think this part of the series doesn't show enough of the depth of these two characters, but the glimpse we got shows us how as younger (and less mature in some ways) people they found each other as partners and will help each other grow up and become "adults."
About the kiss, it was ~lust~ . I mean, she thought there was no hope for her case and she had nothing to lose. I don't think she even thought Colin would kiss her at that point. But he did!

My husband and I started as friends, we were friends in high school. We were together for 8 months broke up, then apart for 9 years, and then back together for 8 months. Then we got married, on my birthday mind you :D..now we've been married 9 years and going. So, to everyone saying it can't be done or whatever I'm a firm believer in not the right time. I knew the moment I met him that I was going to meet him. It's a comforting feeling knowing that my husband and I have grown up together and that we've known each other since we were 15 yrs old. A tale as old as time.

The book handled the friends to lovers arc MUCH better. I wish the show writers had borrowed from it more skillfully, because the crap they came up with instead was weak AF, two dimensional and uninspiring. In the show, Colin basically falls in lust with her after a ridiculously overwrought makeover, and the actual bond they already had is forgotten. Both spend the rest of the season mostly miserable. I hated everything about it. Sorry. One more casualty of the writers' strike / TV shows' unwillingness to pay great writers, directors and camera people what they're worth.

As non English native speaker, 'I would never dream of courting Penelope' - does it not mean something like I would not dare, I would not even try? Dreaming of is wanting something ? Is his sentence really implying he does not want? In the book it's done better, the mother suggets him marrying Pen, since she is seeing great friendship fondation, and Colin is then saying I will never marry Pen, only becuase he just not ready and wants his travels so much,

Please tell me there will be a 2nd part and that you will be discussing the following point no one wants to talk about:
As much as I want to love the romance between Penelope and Colin, I feel a bit conflicted. When Colin was younger I didn't have much to dislike, he was a young man who didn't know what he wanted and didn't have the backbone to stand up for himself which isn't great but somehow still forgivable but at the end of part 1 of season 3 (spoiler alert only continue watching if you've seen the end of S3 part 1) where Colin proposed to Penelope he lost me. That was the most unromantic proposal I've ever seen and I don't understand why everyone loves that scene so much. He basically says that he's tried not to love her because she's not desirable in the eyes of society and he's invested a lot of effort and strength in resisting his feelings and is too weak and therefore gives up. Who wants to hear that? His proposal is totally insulting. Why doesn't he tell her why he loves her and what makes her special to him? I'm happy for Penelope that her dreams are coming true but she deserves a better love story! Please please please tell us your thoughts on that in a part 2!

I honestly can tell you, while they didn't totally kill the love story by doing an actual good "girl-boss: adaptation of Penelope, they did lose so much character growth individually and with each other in doing it. It was also effected by the unfortunate add ons in side stories when this one really just needed small bits of those that could be continued in the next season.
