Hi, Great video and very clear. Help please re extending time lapse filming time outdoors. Have asked a few people but not had a clear answer! When outside, can I plug a battery bank into my G9 instead of or in addition to the standard battery so that I can take time-lapse over a longer period rather than being limited by the standard battery life? If so, can you recommend a battery bank or at least recommend a spec? Many, many thanks. Tony

@@mattisulanto This seems to be the problem with most newer cameras. Older canon cameras like my powershot 520 can operate on wall charger while timelapse can be driven from computer at the same time. Images can be downloaded to the computer as taken basically meaning that this setup supports infinite duration timelapses. I wish I would find more modern camera that supports this.

11:35 Focus drifts on my G9 and S1R cameras. Single shot AF (AFS), sit it on the table powered on but idle. Put something in front it focusses. Remove it, focus changes. I have no idea what's going on. But, it's not going to be good for timelapse, even under constant lighting and little subject movement. Such as a seed germinating.

    • @mattisulanto

Manual focus works, no drifting. I'm not sure what is going on with your camera and because I have no Lumix cameras available right now I can't help you unfortunately. You could double check if you have some setting on/off that could make the focus drift. What if you disable shutter button focus and make sure you don't have pre focus active, if your camera has that option.

The Lumix S5 in particular seems to compare favorably with the Sony a7iii, but the Sony lacks the ability to render the time-lapse in camera, and misses the ability to program a start time, other than a delay. I am using Time Lapse in my GH5 to take self portraits on a tripod. I want to be able to take several shots without going back and forth and using the self timer which seems to have a max limit of 10 seconds.
But I would like to be able to review the photos from the time lapse in my camera. Is there a way to do that?

After you have finished shooting and you are in the playback mode, touch the screen and in the upper left corner appears a button. When you press the button you'll get sequential play with controls at the bottom of the screen. Also read the manual pages 201-202 (English manual).

Also I cannot figure out what the checkerboard screen icons do.
Do you think the quality of the image is just as good if you film a video and grab a still from the video or is the quality much better if you shoot photos with the stop animation?

Good introduction to timelapse video, but it is missing a key discussion of how to use ND filters and longer shutter speeds to add motion blur and remove quick moving objects that only appear in one frame. For example, the timelapse at 10:14 has flying birds which flash in the frame; a 1 or 2 second exposure would have blurred out the birds. I like to use a shutter speed of at least half the interval between shots (similar to 180 degree shutter on real-time video) to make a pleasing motion blur when photographing nature. When timelapsing people and vehicles, you might want to shorten the exposure to make them more recognizable, but I would not use a shutter speed faster than about 1/25 s. A longer shutter speed will give a totally different look, while a shorter shutter speed makes the scene look like stop-motion animation. I also like to shoot 4:3 and make my timelapse videos in post so that I can add more zoom and pan effects, and have the effect of a tilt-shift lens by cropping out the bottom of the photograph.

I'm afraid I can't recommend anything. I think you should make a little experiment, shoot a test and see how it goes. I'm not a Lumix ambassador any more and I don't have any Lumix cameras available at the moment so I could double check the setting and options. Besides, if you experiment you'll also learn something while at it.

Another tip that should be added so you don't run off your shutter, use electronic shutter priority as well to prevent over use the mechanical shutter.

    • @mattisulanto

Thanks! Usually the auto WB does a good job, but I'd probably use manual WB for sunrise, if I wanted to emphasize that early morning warm light. I think it's wise to experiment, because we all have slightly different taste. One option is to shoot all in RAW and make the video in post, but that would require a bit more effort.

Thanks Matti! I have done timelapses before with my various off-brand action cameras, and they can be fun and fascinating, but it looks like I definitely have more control (and better image quality)) if I use my G85. I did have one question -- your timelapse of people and vehicles moving has each image crystal clear with no image blur. But sometimes having a longer exposure per frame to capture some image blur imparts a different feel to the movement in the final video. If you have done that before -- what would you recommend for the exposure settings (which priority, what shutter speeds -- or something like stick with Aperture priority, but use ND filters to force the camera to drop to low shutter speeds)? Thanks!!! Looking beautiful there in Helsinki this time of year!

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  4 года назад +1

Thanks! I'm not a master of timelapses, but I'm aware that longer exposure will give different results. However, you have to keep the shutter speed the same and probably need an ND as well. If you expect minor changes in the lightning, you could try manual mode with auto ISO. That would let you keep the shutter speed and aperture constant, but small changes in the ISO would not show in the final video. But, if your ISO goes from 200 to 1600 and back many times, you'll probably see that in the video as well.

@@mattisulanto -- Ahhh, thanks! Yeah, I agreed with your video that locking in the aperture would help the video look consistent throughout, and I knew that using a slower shutter speed would achieve the motion blur -- but with my mind so grounded in film photography, I tend to forget about auto-ISO on all of these digital cameras!!! Can't do that with film! Haahaa! But yes, allow the camera to tweak the ISO to keep the exposure accurate while locking in the desired aperture and shutter speed. Thank you! Matti to the rescue!

    • @mattisulanto

Glad that my comment was meaningful and thanks for your reply. As the timelapse videos are indeed not so cinematic.
Maybe acting on shutter speed will give some more smoothness especially when timelapse is a kind of B-Roll within a longer video and keep consistency.

Great video Matti, as usual!!! One question - when I have used the timelapse function in the camera (G80) and let the camera create the video, it sometimes turns out with an annoying flicker. So I now use the timelapse function but transfer the photos to my computer and use a software (with an anti-flicker setting) to create the video. Have you noticed the same on your Lumix cameras?

crashalot63 been experimenting with G80 timelapse too for fun as a ”b-roll” when shooting video with gh5. I think you won’t get flicker if you have everything manual. Flickering occurs when the camera changes aperture, shutterspeed or iso automatically according to changes in light on the scene. So all manual mode should work best

Yeah this still bugs me! Why do I have to tell it how many pics to take? All I want to do is set the interval and let it go, it should run till I stop it or the battery dies or the memory is full, whichever comes first. I wasted so much time until I figured out that you had to tell the stupid thing how many pics to take, and that is just stupid! That was a while ago now but I'm still angry about it, cause it makes no sense! The camera has a built in clock, why not use it as a timer to start and stop a time laps? But how many pics should it take in 5 hours? Who cares, nobody needs to know that bit of useless information! Alright, I gotta stop, I'm getting mad just thinking about it.
