      Check out Frontier and El Capitan. They will exceed the exaflops capacity mark, and together will reach almost similar levels to the distributed volunteer networks.(BOINC and Folding@home) This puny Canada's best machine doesn't compare anymore at all.

      @@illuminate4622 That is an incredibly stupid thing to say, I dont know about these distributed computing projects in particular, but you cant move memory around fast between distributed computers, which is one of the main benefits of having these kinds of highly networked devices.

    -Kinda powerful
    -Pretty fast
    -Can probably run Minesweeper
    -Almost enough storage for all your 4K porn
    -Will probably have a Cinebench score higher than 650
    -Very power efficient
    Cons:
    -A little pricy
    -A little noisy
    -Kinda big chassis footprint
    -Above average power draw

      It's a server system, so everything will have redundancy and parity, so in the same way that a failing drive is unexpected and coped with, a drive being removed would be too. I imagine there's some note in a log somewhere that says that drive disappeared though.

      @@yngfljm2277 RAID 0 is a disk array where your data is split evenly across all the drives. It provides absolutely no redundancy and if one drive fails, you lose everything. Even if you have ten 1TB drives in a RAID0 array (which creates 10TB of fast-access storage), pulling out one of them will result in losing *everything* . I'm sure the author of the previous comment meant RAID1 (mirroring). Though I wouldn't recommend that either. You can enjoy the benefits of both mirroring and stripping with higher raid levels. Nowadays we use mainly RAID5/6/10

      I've been in there and it's not that loud, definitely not worth wearing ear protection. The old Bugaboo cluster is next to it and is much noisier, set to be decommissioned in the fall last I heard.

      It does not have to be loud te get damage in hearing. Duration is something most people do not take into account. Even 80decibel can damage you're ears when exposed for an hour or something.

    This is pretty cool to see. I use Compute Canada Cedar everyday but I wouldn't describe it as a data center. It's a HPC and an awesome one in fact.

      Usually these kinds of hot-swap storage servers are in a some kind of redundant RAID configuration so that nothing goes wrong if a drive breaks or someone pulls it out.

    I program the automated systems that run these types of chilled water/condensing water plants. It really is a marvel to go into these facilities. I just get lost checking everything out.....never met a mech room I didnt like.
