I love this splave guy. hes a giant mountain of a man, but hes so soft spoken, and clearly hes smart. certainly not a book to judge by the cover.
Yeah something mesmerizing bout him
He reminds of Glen Jacobs, the man who plays Kane in WWE. If you watch him out of character, he's this huge man who talks intelligently.
totally agree, he is super intimidating until he starts talking then he gives off a calm protective vibe
Just read: “cover not a judge by book the cover”
If you're judging built guys based on knowledge, well then you need to move.... Or go on holiday some time. There's a ton of tech nerds that are also gym rats/buff people. Could be any number of things making him that built, who knows, he might handle heavy servers and install them most of the day. That being said I do agree that typically buff guys are stereotyped these days, personally I blame TV shows that show muscular frat boys on shows like love island, where it's just for the drama.
That Fractal Torrent case is one of the best air flow cases you can get. But if you leave the side panel off you're killing its ability to throw air from front to back.
Question, does having the bottom fans not introduce non linear airflow (turbulence?) I can't seem to think of the proper terms
@@caidelander2561 No. The bottom fans add to the flow coming from the front 180mm fans. Along with the rear exhaust you have an overpowering flow of air from front to back that cools the whole system. The bottom fans provide so much cool air for my 3070 that the GPU fans never ramp up to high, which they always did in my old case
@@keithmaher9576 Oh okay, I just got the case and was wondering how to manage the fans
@@keithmaher9576If ever you could do you think you could run some benchmarks with and without the fans at the bottom. I'm super curious to see how massive the difference is. I always thought that the non laminar nature of having bottom fans would be problematic
If the case was small yes air would get trapped. Simply too much volume of case for air to be trapped, also the same reason testboard setups with no case get better temps because no air is being trapped.
something that has always bugged me about testing thermals is: why do they always do the tests with the case open. Having the case open effectively changes the airflow designs of the case
it dose but to be fair the stock pc case was open as well
Probably for the video, to show off the internals visually
I mean there is absolutely NO WAY that it make things " WORST " soooo...
I dont get that either, you would want to know how a case runs closed because thats how most of us runs our pcs. I guess gamernexus is the pro go to when it comes to testing thermals.
Yeah was thinking the same thing
Splave is simultaneously the most intimidating person they've had on the show, and is also way less intimidating than actual business mode Linus.

it's pretty insane how much pcs have changed, overclocking basically isn't worth it anymore. 10 years ago you could squeeze so much extra performance out of your hardware, now they already do it in the factory.
26 years ago I overclocked a 100 MHz CPU to 133. THAT was a performance increase.
Agreed man! My current gaming rig that is about to be retired to NAS / stream rig. Has a xeon x5650, and its overclocked to 4.2 to 4.4ghz. Its base clock was roughly 2ghz. I essentially gave the damn chip an extra 2ghz. And its platform 1st gen i7 setup, it had a dang i7930 for years till i stumbled upon the ability to just throw a xeon into it.
Albeit i cannot wait to build a new rig soon
Nowadays we overclock for like 2% more performance 💀
Now, we undervolt to get 95% of the performance for 75% of the power draw.
Because a 50MHz overclock on a 200MHz CPU is a much higher percentage than a 150MHz increase on a 3.8GHz CPU.

Goes to show just how good automatic boost clocking is from the factory nowadays. The last time I think overclocking was really worth it is when I had a 980ti. I was able to get about 25% extra performance from it with a custom bios flash. Nowadays it’s all about low temps. It’s strange that water cooling wasn’t chosen here. In a situation like this, I would connect the pc to an isolated AC output as well as an AC transient filter. That will prevent ground looping and smooth out rapid changes in voltage and frequency of the AC from the grid
Power and wireless interference aside, with the side of the case off you are interrupting the optimal air flow out the back. Splave specifically mentioned it wasn't an issue with the GPU blowing into the CPU cooler. With the proper ducting in place (aka close up the case) you might not have seen some of the issues you did. It's such a fine-tuned system that interrupting the airflow the way you did will skew the results.

I love watching these videos cause I know damn well I’ll never be able to afford or do this stuff myself, about to build a pc for the first time though
Isn't the lack of side panel actually a disadvantage in this case? I mean, with that many fans surely the airflow must be superb and actually required to evacuate the hot air properly
thats what i was thinking
If they both have side panels off it is at least fair comparison
Not really due to convection and having that much open space for air to escape , any hot air will naturally rise up and out of the case no fans needed , while if your limited to just one fan and the toatall pressure of the case pulling exhaust heat , it will accumulate faster due to those restrictions in airflow
@@lucidx2 convection isn't doing anything with that much airflow. What I could see happening is more of the air coming off the GPU being sucked in by the CPU cooler, because the air from the intake fans is escaping out the side instead of forcing it out the back of the case.

Did you really thermal test the fractal torrent with the side panel open? You know that's a positive pressure case... Right?
EDIT: Dude, no, seriously, make the test again. The hole glory of that case is that the pressure coming from the front fans makes almost impossible for the gpu temps to reach the CPU cooler. Is literally the case with the best temps on the market while also being positive pressure.

Since you mentioned having a UPS, how about some videos on testing the benefits of having one? Or perhaps some different use cases.
Personally, I have small UPS units for both my tower and my internet. I'm planning to get a third when I set up a NAS device. I also have family who keep a UPS connected to the kids' TV.
I've considered getting one, but the idea of having to mess with replacing and dispose of the batteries every 5 years kind of turns me off of it, and I seem to have pretty stable power where I live. I'd also like to see a more in depth video on the subject.
@@tinitis4144 You're concern over battery replacement is a good thing for them to test.
maybe you have to watch linus as long as i have in order to get the jokes.. but, they're not ACTUALLY recommending to get a UPS. they're saying if you get the Splave PC, which they low-key don't recommend, because, Linus mentioned 4 times about not liking the cooler in it, and also low-key mentioned that aside from the top-binned silicon, it's essentially the same as their machine, only 5% faster.... you could get 5% faster than stock just by using EVGA precision X OC and upping your video card a bit... so, i mean, 5% is literally nothing in terms of overclocking performance. (but overclocking doesn't really ever get anyone much more performance anyhow... but i think they were expecting better given that this guy is ranked number 1 in overclocking) anyway, they mentioned the UPS because they were running two 1500W (approximately) power supplies, which, together at full power, means they're going over the maximum amperage allowed on a typical home power circuit (i.e. it'll blow the breaker). he also mentions that their machine is $5100, but this guy doesn't know how much his machine is going to sell for yet.... linus throws shade at that in the end. linus basically ripped this guy a new one, but did it in a very passive aggressive way, and i think it might have been easy to miss, but i assure you, don't worry about a UPS (unless you're a business or streamer or something, but even then, nowadays, how often does your power REALLY go out? where I'm at, it almost never goes out even during storms), i also assure you that linus and team would recommend just spending your money on a water cooler and doing some overclocking yourself. Linus even says that intel and manufacturers guarantee their products will work at any ambient temperature, which he could not say the same for the Splace PC. IF that's not ripping dude a new one, i don't know what is. Trust me, Don't give this Splave PC another thought, and don't worry about the UPS slight-of-hand joke at the end there.
weird quote from linus with the 1000+$ tower.
Maybe it is just a NA problem with shitty power but here in europe I haven't heard from anyone that they actually use one.

It annoys me so much that all these FLOW cases have the mother board lined up in the direction where the heat sink blades on most of the equipment do not flow with the direction of air. Heat rises, you can see the path of flow is up and sideways instead of it all just flowing up.
Without CFD or back to back real world testing, it's just speculation.
15:25 My man has been overclocking at the gym too
You should've kept the side panel on the Splave for better results. In a closed environment the fans can suck much more fresh air over the CPU/GPU coolers.
[citation needed]
Doubt it, components usually run at their peak in open air. Cases serve to protect the parts of the PC, and case fans are there to mitigate the side effect of heat buildup. With the side panel off the GPU can be exhausting its heat directly out of the case while the bottom fans feed it fresh air. They should have kept the side panel on though, but for the opposite reason, because the components are probably running cooler than normal with it off.

I was under the impression that the IceGiant prosiphon was better for AMD multi-chiplets that spread the heat more evenly because the aluminum didn't pick up the heat from the Intel die and move it efficiently into the liquid.
I am very worried about the travel-ability of that thing, I was looking for brackets or something that would hold the card and/or heatsink for travel.
Looking forward to the video.
After years of obsessing over case fans (noctua) and cooling and silence, I have found piece in my O11D Evo (3x120 bottom intake, 3x120 top exhaust, 1x120 rear exhaust, 2x140 Side Exhaust Arctic LFII AIO, 3090 FTW3 Vertical kit to ice the backside vram). It’s silent, the temps are legit a little over an average-ish custom loop, it’s insane and finally got me to stop tinkering. Havent even opened it up outside of the (very rarely req’d AT ALL) dusting.
But when the Torrent came out I almost traded my Mini Air in for the Fractal. If I wasnt floored by the silent performance king at $109 Arctic LFII 280, I would’ve strapped on my trusted, triple 140mm fanned, DH-14, and just BLASTED it and the EVGA 3090 FTW3, with the dual monster 180mm’s and triple 140mm’s.
- the beauty of a great air cooler for tinkering Case Fan dorks like me, is that you can always try and squeeze more out of say, an NH-D14/D15, by feeding them fresh air, or creating wind tunnels from front -> NHD15 -> out through rear. Or changing layouts, orientation, or FANS themselves, or cases.
So the Torrent was so appealing, to see how quietly it can blast the back of a 3090 and its vrams. Not as interesting here since the 3090ti uses bigger vram chips and keeps em all on one side.
Splave stares at linus like "i swear to god don't touch it or drop it... I made it perfect" the amount of time and effort to get it to this stage must be insane
it's not, you apply a cooler, set some stuff in the bios, and that's all. most of the work is done long before you start the specific system by reading up on what certain settings do.
@@cheater00 fine tuning a CPU overclock can take less than an hour but fine tuning ram to be stable takes a very long time
Dang, just the GPU alone almost pulls double my whole system's power.
his PC is so sick there is no price to it
love your work and wish my potato could overclock.
Exactly what I hoped to see today :)
2002: Definitely overlock dude. You can get some SERIOUS gains for like no effort.
2022: It takes an overclock world record holder tweaking and tuning basically every setting to squeeze even 5% gains out of the components.
Overclocking is essentially dead.
More specifically, end user over is dead. Overclocks are set at the factory now and pre built in.
on an already balls to to wall pre oc setup, on a consumer geared system you can get a lot more out of it
Competitive overclocking is much more like their last video with Splave where they try to push parts to their limits with ridiculous cryogenic cooling and whatnot. This PC is just for bragging rights, there's no practical reason to get one
Corpos have been thinking "wait a minute, giving away extra performance basically for free... no way, stop that!"
Somewhat of a pitty, I could squeeze out a couple of years longer being relevant out of my CPUs. The first gen i7 920 was relatively easy like 50% overclockable. Had it at 3,8 GHz from 2,66 GHz, that was nuts. Some users achieved even higher stable clock speeds... xD
@@Charles_Bro-son you think Intel is going in and setting a variable like “over 5ghz just crash the computer”? Overclocking is dead because of better cpu boosting algorithms.
Except for GPUs, they just have arbitrary power limits. Not really a thing for CPUs though.

Recently I actually thought it would be cool to make those fins out of copper in the Torrent case.
Well, they almost did it
Making fins copper doesn't make much sense. Copper is better at metal to metal heat transfer than Aluminium, but Aluminium is better at metal to air heat transfer
@@Reac2 Not for heat transfer, just for esthetics. The air will pass through anyway
@@pumpkinLive *aesthetics

This is why I am an advocate for horizontal motherboards/cases.
Gravity is also nicer to large heavy components that are going to be resting inside a computer case for multiple years.

They existed. They were called "Desktop" computers (and they were also called-that because they went ontop of your desk (ie. your "desktop")). The ones that you see right-now (that stand vertically) were-called "Tower" computers because they looked like "towers[/castle towers]".
It's my understanding that under volting is necessary to prevent cross talk in micro architecture. The higher the bandwidth the more chance for cross talk between transmission points.
Dude this thing is crazy. A "prebuilt" that's actually giving you the best of the best is actually super rare these days.
