Having worked in an American cathedral for many years, one thing I constantly had to deal with was visitors from ultra-religious groups, mainly from southern and midwestern organizations, who saw the gargoyles as "pagan" or "graven images" and wanted them taken off. I would try to explain the art in them, the style, effort and the general fun they added to the place by their presence. The blank stares those people would give me were shocking. Artistic merit seemed like a totally alien concept to them.
They really didn't talk about the grotesque. Gargoyles are water spouts, but they are also examples of the grotesque (even if architecture has neatly divided the creatures into two based on whether they are a water spout or not).
One thousand years ago, superstition and the sword ruled. It was a time of darkness. It was a world of fear. It was the age of gargoyles. Stone by day, warriors by night. We were betrayed by the humans we had sworn to protect, frozen in stone by a magic spell for a thousand years. Now, here in Manhattan... the spell is broken. And we live again! We are defenders of the night. We are Gargoyles! too bad sunday morning didn't talk about the animated series
Learning about that whole warding off evil spirits always creeped me out, too. When you think about it, it's placement architecturally makes sense. They aren't allowed to look inward at the house of God. It made even more sense after I got to watch the final story in TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE: THE MOVIE. It's a sad tale involving a gargoyle and an artist. Check it out....🇵🇷🇺🇸😎

Gargoyles are symbolic of the boundary between the center and the fringe. They are put on the boundaries to protect the center from the encroachment of the fringe while at the same time participating in the fringe. Gargoyles are usually placed in out of the way places on Cathedrals, on these boundary areas.
My psychology professor at Brooklyn College, Dr. Norman Weissberg, told us he collected gargoyles. Intriguing to learn more about the social psychology of them.
Very poor explanation! It's simple: on the outside there are the damons of the very day life, inside there is the kingdom of god. A church is always a sanctuary!

Stupid pseudo religious nuts complain about everything they see.

Gargoyles are to grotesques as squares are to rhombi.
I did not know there were gargoyle tours. On my ultimate list! Thank goodness for RUclips, too bad this was pre-empted this past Sunday morning.

I remember reading about the “warding off evil spirits” part back in middle school and that’s stuck with me all these years for some reason 🤔

I am both fascinated and in love with grotesques and gargoyles.
Some may even call me a gaping, grinning mischievous character ;)
Fascinating! I have always loved/been afraid of them!
I was just thinking about why gargoyles come out the sides of churches.
