Loved the video AJ, curious though, why leave out the part about their creation by Ogremoch and the other elemental evils of earth as established in 5th ed? I thought the idea of them as artificial creations used by the forces of earth to harass the good aligned races of the plane of air was quite evocative. Cut for time or is there some criticism of the lore? Honestly intrigued, loved the video as always.
Good Question! Cut for time, I thought it much better to talk about that when I get to the plane of Air :) Also I have not talked about the Elemental Evils yet, so it would be confusing to mention one of them here.
Gargoyles aren’t really evil they are guardians that are loyal to their masters and will protect their masters and those that their masters want protected
I use these monsters for storytelling, their origin is "yes" to all. I even had Gargoyles of different origins fight each other during one battle the players walked into. They picked a side, the gargoyles were great teammates, until the opposing force was defeated and their gargoyle team turned on them. That was PC decision folly #2. The role-play puzzle best solution was to wait until one team eliminated the other and fight that. It was a party of 6, only one player wanted that and he was playing a Pan paladin (Loom of Magus, paladin kit alternative, homebrew, Paladin of Pan were defenders of partyers and generally good people, usually lecherous drunkards. They had spell singing and seduction, alternative ethos, alternative item restrictions, and no cumbersome armor allowed). The Pan Paladin was considered a joke, despite his effectiveness and great decisions, because he believed in the "party god." Pan Paladins were really awesome. He did not have the strengths needed to fight gargoyles, even help as more than relatively bard-like bolstering. He was the only player to vote the best outcome. Let the gargoyles fight it out, let their origins fight. Nope, the party chose the Earth Elemental Alchemist side and fought the Demonic Spirit and avatar side. To be fair, if they waited out the fight, they would have fought the Demonic Spirit side. I rolled all the wait-out situations before the game happened, many fights. More than I should have for sh^ts and giggles. One of twenty went to Earth Elemental Alchemist side despite them being relatively evenly matched. I digress. If you see Gargoyles fight each other, remember they are all evil and wait it out. Fight the survivors.
The one thing I always remembered about Gargoyles was that they feign eating the flesh of their victims as a fear tactic, as they don't need food to survive the act is done to terrify their opponents. My perfect encounter always involved an open area affected by some type of miasma, with 4-5 gargoyles perched around the outside. Players need to make it out of the area before they are overtaken by the poisons as well as the flyby attacks.
I always see it that winged creatures are angels for varying pantheons. For example, Sphinxes are the angels for the Egyptian gods. Pegasi are the angels for the greek gods, and the norse gods. Couatl are the angels for the mayan gods. So I like to think of gargoyles as fallen angels of Grumsh.
I’m doing an underwater campaign soon, and the aquatic gargoyles gave me the idea for a sunken castle or cathedral off the coast, inhabited by coral encrusted gargoyles who prey upon sea elves, tritons, and unwary sailors. This is going to be fun
I also got another idea for the adventure after watching the Galeb Duhr video. The gargoyles use an enslaved coral reef large Galeb Duhr to cause tremors and tidal waves to attack the coast
The mention of the "golem" version being infused with a fear spell really has me fascinated. I think a good way to iterate upon them in future versions would be to lean into them causing supernatural fear. Afterall that is sort of the purpose of gargoyles and grotesques in architecture - they're supposed to be "scary" in order to ward off things, usually evil things but still. I do have to agree with some other commenters in that they really should be "lawfuL" or "good" creatures, because their historic purpose was to keep evil away. They were also to an extent meant to represent a separation of the mundane from the divine - hence part of their placement up in high areas. A good idea for them could be to inhabit ruins of former religious significance; as they like "religious" areas. With the idea of loving "sacred" ruins, I'd also like to see their physiology be somewhat consciously morphic, able to adapt to blend into the ruins from different pantheons they might inhabit.
Fun fact. Gargoyle is the root of the word Gargle, as is gargling water. The reason for this is because what we typically think of as gargoyles are actual called Grotesque or Chimeras. The gargoyle was just a spout for draining water from castle roofs. Just a spout though isn’t very aesthetically appealing, so they’d make Grotesques around them (think those Eagle mouthed spouts in Disney’s version of the Hunchback) and thus common nomenclature caused us all to be calling the statues Gargoyles.
I’ve got an idea for a gargoyle made out of a rock rich in ferrous metal, and made magically magnetic. When you hit it with a metal weapon, you have to pass a strength check to be able to pull your weapon away from the gargoyle. Stat wise, I don’t figure it will have any higher stats than your run of the mill gargoyle, just an added effect.
As usual, always glad to see a TMG video. Gotta listen to a cheese eating madman once again! Good info, and fun times. Though I literally always expect AJ to say, 'I make Dungeons and Dragons videos full time so you don't have to!"
Yeah despite modern pop culture these guys are actually good. And in fact actually protect you from Vampires and such unlike what we seen in popular media now.
Try the "Glittergoyle". What if gargoyles were in an environment where the only available minerals were gemstones? I totally threw a party into chaos with that one. They were remarkably resistant to fire and electricity. Also, very high armor class/ hit dice. Great way to raise a threat-level.
@@zerowolf0006 That was the bulk of the treasure. They were tough to kill, as the lead glittergoyle had a wand of illumination that it used to devastating effect. The party nicknamed the encounter "Panic At The Disco"!
@@zerowolf0006 Luckily, the mage in the party knew Shout, and had a scroll with Stone to Flesh, and a pair of Crystabrittle spells ( the crystalbrittle in case of cave-ins that required digging through). It turned the tide of battle at the last minute (once the initial shock/horror wore off).
You know, I never understood why gargoyles were Chaotic Evil... and that's probably thanks to Disney's Gargoyles. But in hindsight it makes sense. They perch on top of a castle not because it likes the view or because it's getting nutrients from the stone or whatever... they perch there because that castle is probably known for being the epicenter of many battles and waits patiently for the next so they can slaughter as many soldiers as they can. The soldiers of the castle from past battles probably have noticed the "statues" coming to life and "fighting on their side." So it has become a misconception that gargoyles are protectors when in actuality they don't care who's side you're on, you're just as much a target for their slaughter as the enemy soldier you're fighting.
Historically, Gargoyles and Grotesques were created as protectors, supposed to keep evil spirits out of the buildings they were attached to. They were also used architecturally to protect structures by being channels for moving water away from the sides to prevent errosion and other water damage (A true gargoyle is based around a water spout, a grotesque is not). For the D&D gargoyle, the one I most remember is from DDO, where he's a random encounter in the second major outdoor exploration area you get to. Gargoyles in Ebberon aren't Chaotic Evil if I remember right, and are more of a Neutral species that both like a good fight and like to watch things, so them showing up tends to point towards trouble because a major fight is about to happen (like they decided you'd be a good fight...) and the others might be sitting somewhere for decades or even centuries and only react because you or someone there managed to interest them enough to get involved (Or you might have been using it for cover and it got hit...)

related in a rock sense just wanted to bounce an idea that had been rattling around in the old noggin off you. What do you think of a BBEG that is an apprentice wizard who is using a petrified elder brain as a sort of fetish to enact a ritual that is dominating a vast swath of people. So he's chipping bits off, and because an elder brain is extra dimensional as he chips stone bits off it creates lovecraftian architecture as the parts of the elder brain in the extra dimensional space try to repopulate the lost stony gray matter. He's chipping off pieces to make pseudo magical amulets that make able to dominate anyone wearing a medallion made out of these chipped pieces. Basically he's using the broken pieces to make the elder brain work the way it does if it wasn't petrified. I was toying with the ideas that he makes other enslaved apprentice wizard burn spell slots massaging the stoned elder brain to make the effect work. I dunno I wanted to do a 1 to 10 adventure for it but since a couple groups fell through I lost confidence in it being a good idea. His grand scheme was to melt down magic items to create a pool of latent magic to make one of them crowns of ultimate wizardry. Because what does an apprentice want besides being a grand magic user immediately.
@@AJPickett Thank you, the current D&D campaign I'm in deals with Waterdeep and there is next to nothing online for the street gangs of Waterdeep despite it being a city with a lot of criminal activity.
Adamantine is an ultrahard metal found in meteorites and extraordinary mineral veins. In addition to being used to craft adamantine armor, the metal is also used for weapons. Melee weapons and ammunition made of or coated with adamantine are unusually effective when used to break objects. Whenever an adamantine weapon or piece of ammunition hits an object, the hit is a critical hit. The adamantine version of a melee weapon or of ten pieces of ammunition costs 500 gp more than the normal version, whether the weapon or ammunition is made of the metal or coated with it. So, they auto score critical hits against objects, and it is pretty easy to argue that an elemental made entirely of stone, animate or not, is still an object.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers that movie.
@@williamchandler2937 - I just watched it again in the last few months and I still think it's creepy.
Been usuing gargoyles since my first 3rd edition momster manual. Love them
Love the gargoyles in dark souls they come down on you wielding flames from a staff trident's and axes you can cut the tails off and get a cool axe too lots of fun on a rooftop
That is just like Dark Souls. ;)
Good stuff.
Honestly Gargoyles don't usually show up in games that I play or run, but there's some bits here that could make for an interesting homebrew.
Maybe Gargoyles are original Daemons, being the "natural " occurring version of Yugoloth before hags get ahold of them.... that might run counter to lore presented as written for 5th though.
That's why we call it Homebrew.
@@brettonalwood4173 Indeed. I tend to favor homebrew lore, in a general sense, but i had a guy rip into me the other day for not toeing the drider-line the other day.
good video AJ
Peaceful resolution? Just give them a job guarding a magical artifact and promise to spread tales of where it's located everywhere you go.
Might be morally questionable but hey, you've got yourself magical guards for peanuts, so what do you care?
Too bad they aren't like real gargoyles which spit water from their mouths . A quad elemental , stone body, water breath, air flight and fire emotion and appetite.
Wow i always thought you were the mighty glue stick because you finished a script and then glued the page to ontop of your stack of scripts. thats cool ill have to look for your older videos then.
All I can hear is Jason Krimeah, the Exalted One, yelling “this is a gargoyle. You can’t even tell what that is”
The man is a legend. His beard is also a legend, possibly a greater one.
Indeed. I was actually trying to avoid making a reference to him, but Jason Krimeah just had to make the true gargoyles and it was too good of an opportunity to miss. Excellent video as always Loremaster.
Is it possible to have a character who is a hunter of gargoyles, bring equipped with spells like the reversal of stone to flesh to make them vulnerable and easier to kill?
Yes
I was looking forward to this
There is more gargoyle lore to come...
My Necromancer Drow has conjured a few Gargoyles in a couple AL games 🕸🕷😈💯
can i use a stone to flesh spell on a gargoyle?
Yes. They will entirely kill you for doing that.
@@AJPickett would they not fall on to their now flesh and blood partner?
Just go for gold and blow a Wish spell on turning every Gargoyle on your plane from stone to flesh.
Just to screw with them.
@@DCdabest I like.- also can Gargoyles be made from Metal instead of stone?
@@markusnavergard2387 reply no , but they could be made of fiberglass or any of thousands of highly durable ceramics that science has come up with.
I saw that Nox Arcana art!
I got a plastic gargoyle mini from heroquest boardgame I think it's from.
Love your videos but hearing that you also do crafting has me interested. Maybe time to show some stuff to those of us who hadn't discovered this channel when you were trying your crafting?
Ah, sure, I can show you a little bit.
Awesome!
lol dirty thoughts . 3.5 a wizard learns how to made a gargoyle and combines the idea with a shield guardian...
a gargoyle falls into the vat that and infuses its makeup and general form into the possible forms build and taken for the warforged in Eberron.
Dracos Diabolis Shhhhh...you had me at dirty thoughts.
@@Im-Not-a-Dog I have most at dirty thoughts 🤣
So they are only chaotic evil so long as they were created by demonic means but if someone use the wish spell on them or form of a gargoyle that's not animated or given living forum wouldn't that be something it's alignment could reflect that of its creator I might have to ask my DM if I could create a gargoyle that would be lawful neutral
Wow I never expected I would receive a like from the RUclipsr who created the video but I shouldn't be surprised as it is an interesting idea someone making a gargoyle that wouldn't just be evil of course I'm the same person that enjoys watching gargoyles and secretly had a crush on Demona LOL
Definitely using this concept in my homebrew! Thanks for the idea
I agree. It's like animating a chair would have an attitude? Only a push in a direction from magic would give intellect or intent.
I collect gargoyles, I love them so much ❤️❤️❤️
Another guard in my hags pyramid
Never knew that about the glue stick name I just figured that like me you use hot glue for a bunch of stuff like I do
The recent encounter with the gargoyle punks in the campaign was awesome. I loved the part where they were noted painting graffiti on the generator.

Bless you, brother!
Great video AJ, I really enjoy your videos!
Can anyone help me out to find out what this creature's name is? I've searched on Google but no results could help. I believe it was a panther-like monster that has the ability to peel back its skin on its head, revealing a muscle covered head, possibly as a scare tactic. It has been driving me crazy for the past few weeks now.
That is the Krenshar.
Okay, had to pause ⏸️ the video. Did not know the origin of the channel.
I always imagined it was named after some fantastic adventure that the day was won with a glue stick.
Pardon the pun, but Im going to stick with that one. 😀
Could we see a video on the might Remorhaz
Nevermind haha.....I didn't see where you made it
Does anyone know where we could find the old issues of the magazine Dungeon? I love TMG's podcasts but I would love to use some of the reference material.
JT B You can google any Dungeon or Dragon Magazine and download!
Check out "thetrove"
Hope that helped
Shame shame AJ,you never mentioned the Spouter, the Archer the Grandfather Plaque or the n.good gargoyles known as Stone Lions eh?
I researched, printed out and read that entire dragon magazine article and then placed it in the trash. I make no pretense of neutrality here, I prefer elemental gargoyles.
@@AJPickett lol do the gargoyles that i mentioned in my comment appear in 5th edition? I hope you were not offended by the comment,i love all forms of gargoyles 😁 especially those little monsters called archers and spouters!
I can't remember exactly what store it was, but if I had to guess, I'd say it was the Hot Topic of my childhood mall that had gargoyles for decoration. I thought they were the shit
That, or Spencer's.
Gargoyles the cartoon and gargoyle from early 1970's marvel comic the defenders
It's my understanding that they also have a deep connection to vampires whether or not its cause a fact or whether they come from the same progenitor I don't know but I do know that they are inevitably connected to one another
News to me.
@@AJPickett only connection to vampires that i am aware of is in elder scrolls, but the I, Frankenstein take of them being a religious order defending against demons is kind of interesting. Obviously neither of those are part of D&D myths.
In world of darkness they are. And in skyrim. But i'm just guessing it's because they share so many tropes. Both vampires and gargoles make thematically perfect gothic monsters.
@@thedarkmaster4747 i have to add i just watched the netflix series of castlevania and i am not as familiar with this game but it does appear as though there are gargoyle like creatures serving the night horde

I`d suggest people look up Clark Ashton Smith - The Maker Of Gargoyles.
You’ll need a very hot flame to kill one of those boys…
related in a rock sense just wanted to bounce an idea that had been rattling around in the old noggin off you.
I think that is kind of the plot of one of the Halloween movies, with chips of Stonehenge in spooky masks. It's a good idea, go for it.
Gus the Gargoyle from the Robert Asprin books is a cool non-murdery gargoyle.
And they function in space lol
Gargoyles in spaaaaaace
First, and great video as always ☺️
Seamus wuz here!
Seamus you cad! Lol
Ok, ok. But are they voiced by Micheal Dorn?
Keith David
Do you have the budget for that at your gaming table?
I wish lol Keith David would sound great as a dungeon master describing rooms and encounters
Please do a video on Waterdeep and its street gangs.
Mmmm, I will get around to it.
@@AJPickett Thank you, the current D&D campaign I'm in deals with Waterdeep and there is next to nothing online for the street gangs of Waterdeep despite it being a city with a lot of criminal activity.

Adamantium does auto critical hits?
