- Creepy subterrainian gastropods possibly related to the piercer and roper, possibly originating in the Shadowfell, certainly a classic dungeons and dragons underdark monstrousity that attacks, generally, when least expected.

Oh boy, nothing beats sudden strength checks at disadvantage, in total darkness.
When designing D&D creatures that can be described as "weird", I usually just pick up alien planet and rewatch it for inspiration. So many neat concepts in that film, there are.
Never before would I think that something could jump from magic, quests, and dragons to other dimensions, evolution, and alien life so seamlessly.
*D&D everybody!*
God damn flying cuttlefish
Sure do enjoy these. Glad you out them out so frequently. They help out my games for sure.
its literally a flying octopus! :)
its visual design also seems quite inspired by vampire squid
I have homebrew Hag in my world that wears a Darkmantle as a Witch's hat and as her familiar. She also duel wields Blunderbusses and is a crime boss. One of my favorite creations yet.
Amazing.
The sign on the door reads: BEWARE cave umbrella's
Do you dare to open the door?
You seriously deserve more recognition, I love your videos and please never stop. 😁😁
Spread the word Kyler, spread the word. ;)
So these are an unholy combination of slug and octopus?
We're gonna need a lot of salt...
DM: as you're walking down the cave you hear a faint pop nearby
Player: I look behind me
DM: theres nothing behind you. Suddenly it's dark, you cant breathe, and everything from the stomach up hurts
"They are tremendously strong" What did you expect from a cephalopod? The largest octopus in real life can restrain *a fucking shark.*
I was today years old when I realized DC meant difficulty class. The great lord AJ continuing to teach his disciples
I get to use my Jeff Goldblum voice... " uh.. And there it is"
In my divine game. These were my sacrificial alters. Haha. With cloakers as my clerics. The best part was that I was an underdark god of healing.
Hey man just wanted to say I love all your videos you got me into running a Homebrew campaign and they survived all the to the final showdown. But I've used many of the monster and beasts you've showed off. So thank you sir from me and all my players
Tell them I say Hi
I nearly had a TPK on my party when using these guys, they are no joke.
Yeah, they're one of those monsters that have a deceptively low CR. They are indeed capable of wiping parties that should be able to handle them easily based on CR alone.
This is a genuinely terrifying monster.
Darkmantel. Looks like someone needs the coffee
Yes, thanks!
I ran a Pokemon style game last year and the Darkmantle our Ranger snagged turned out to be very useful. Once it was somewhat "trained" it became something of a thrown weapon when it wasn't being worn about like a creepy fanny pack.
If you start to lose all feeling in your lower limbs, feed Darkmantle bits of bacon until it releases its grip.
@@AJPickett And definitely avoid feeding it sausages, bananas or candied Kobold tails. No need for those types of phallic associations when the pet needs a midnight snack.
My players just hate it when I drop monsters on their heads......so yeah keep the ceiling beasts coming AJ. Great work and thanks again
Ready to get nerdy on the way to work!!!
Why do SO many of the creepy crawly things in the Underdark either hang from the ceiling or the floor imitating stalagmites and stalactites? Ropers, Cloakers, Darkmantel, Chokers, Piercers, various forms of fungi. Best to enter the Underdark with a rock hammer and a lot of constitution and just smash everything rock-like you see.
I imagine it's the same reason that so many small animals look like leaves and rocks
I see you have met Dwarves.
@@AJPickett the gold you find is just gravy, monster smashing is their true passion!
How do think you dwarves got so traumatized? Too many fake rocks.
Just carry an umbrella. They'd drop on the umbrella and you can just toss that away!
Loved the vid A.J. thanks!
2:04 hahaha, This looks like he's saying, "Damnit! Tricked again?!"😂
What's up pranksters!
This is called the "Tricking a Darkmantle into attacking a scarecrow prank (it was so mad)"
Alright! Another one of my favorite types of creatures, the aberrations.
Great video, I look forward to more videos, expecialy abberations. Here’s another request for the Silthilar, one of the more intriguing abberations in my opinion.
Variant of a dark mantle that can cause deafness? Would make sense in a realm of near constant darkness.
I would love some merchendice ... Merchen...DICE.
Hmmm, food for thought
I call them "coins" :D
Gastropod is a snail 🐌
Cephalopod is a squid/octopus 🐙
👍 thank you
Darkmantles: Just in case your players laugh at piercers and don't have enough nightmares or fear of the dark.
Yes, yes. Things do go bump in the night. Darkness is scarry, no... Darkness is evil. Banish it with light... Holy light. @_@
Darkmantles are a fascinating creature and are a perfect choice for an ambush for a tense situation. Also I'm surprised that you used a scene from Wrath of the Dragon God I was under the impression that everyone hated all three of the D&D live action movies and avoided them like The Plague.
I honestly did not realise that was from the movie, and a small part of me is burning with shame.. However, Tom Baker appears in one of those movies as an Elf, and he was my favorite Dr Who, so, slightly forgiven.
They're more like that special kind of blue-cheese, black-licorice, Marmite/ Vegimite shows. I'm lucky enough to have a film-studies guy in my nerd-out group, and we've found those to be _amazing_ movies to MST3K ourselves through...
DMs are encouraged to vocalize a sticky fart sound when it lands on a player's head.
Hey it's the magic face huggers
Monster Art imo is what I’d love to see
when did they decide piercer was an imature roper not mentiond in ether listing in my monster manual then again i got it in 1979 lol
I think I started playing in 1982
It is highly questionable lore.. personally, I don't think it is correct.
@@AJPickett cool thanks
Like a cloaker, if this creature envelope its prey's head, then any damage inflicted by the prey's friends will inflict half the damage to the victim likewise. Surprised you didn't mention that. Anyway, kudos to you for this great video. I play 2nd -edition AD&D only and like to adapt up to 5th-edition creatures to my campaigns. Are all monsters from 2nd-edition have been updated to 5th-edition?
Not by a long shot, officially, there are many more that have been homebrewed on the DM's guild
Oh this gave me some great ideas!
Seamus wuz here!
Flying slimy squid? Great, just peachy. Its a "Light's out" creature.
*I've seen enough hentai to know where this is going*
They are only slimy, in adult form, on the bottom of their snail-like foot.
@@AJPickett To much information
This video has received 1 thumbs down from someone with a tentacle fetish that doesn’t like all the negative talk about the Dark Mantle members of its community.

Is the lurker above/below still a thing in D&D? Are they related?
Wizards of the Coast sign this chap up, he’s top hole.
Classic monsters never die, and I will find them all.
Since you asked, if there was a shirt or similar with various Lore tomes on subjects you've covered, I'd consider it.
a picture of a pile of books with labels such as "Giants" "Dragons" and such?
@@AJPickett Exactly. Maybe a grimoire feel.
Time for some deep.fried darkmantle
Hmmmm. For some reason I would think they would have a rubbery or cartilage texture.
Just season it with 9 hells seasoning it will be good
Cook it briefly over high heat to keep it tender. Use a wok or sauté pan for a quick stir-fry, or batter the Darkmantle for deep or shallow frying. They take most spices well, some prefer garlic and chives with leek and cress, I prefer mine with olive oil, fresh dill and they make a great base for a spicy gumbo.
Serve with a Mephistopheles Margareta and you have one hell of a delicious time
good video Arch
Its cool, as i can bring it into 1st & 2nd quite easily! Nice Kiwi!
So do they make tasty calamari?
You need to peel the leathery exterior and marinate the meat for a while.
@@AJPickett
Good Grief, I think I my new found D&D quest might be to open a exotic monster Grill. Like the legendary Tarrasque steak special, only 25.99
I have the perfect answer for you. You see, since I’m running my first couple of sessions as a survival game, my party is gonna need to find food. This is where I present them with an interesting dilemma.
At some point they will find a cave, it appears to be uninhabited (this is just because the darkmantles have eaten everything that tried to shelter in the cave), though there are some gnawed-on bones.
And then, of course, darkmantles descend upon them. Once they kill the darkmantles they will learn some rather interesting things about them.
A successful DC 15 insight check reveals that darkmantle meat is toxic. It’s not that it’s bad for you, but your body doesn’t handle the whole “magical darkness thing” very well and you are blinded for several days afterwards.
A DC 20 insight check reveals how to cook it:
The process of making their meat safe requires that you cut out their eyes and boil them in salt water, then immerse them in fresh water to leech out the shadow toxin.
It’s sort of like eating a pufferfish, it has to be prepared right, then it’s delicious. The texture could be compared to dense and fibrous squid meat, and the flavor is rich and aromatic in a strange, unfamiliar taste even when you add no spices. This flavor somewhat overpowers the squid flavor, but you can still taste it.
Interestingly, chewing on it releases some of the magical darkness, meaning that you can’t see the inside of your mouth. It’s a delicacy usually only enjoyed by royalty for how dangerous it is to obtain.
@@arandomzoomer4837 so only the eyes are edible?
@@capealio
No you can eat the meat you just gotta cook it right. Boil it in saltwater
2:25 poor dude's not having a good day lol.
He is actually an exotic dentist hired by the Shadar-Kai to fix up their pet "Squeezy". *rolls bluff check*

Could you do a video on the archomentals? Trying to populate my elemental planes atm and would like to know more about them, including where they reside and who follows them
You're in luck, I have a video on the Drider to do, and then, I start a mini-series all about the elementals!
@@AJPickett Great! Thanks alot
do you think you'll ever be covering the mooncalf? i remember seeing it a while back and it was so weirdly fascinating, went to google it and i guess they're also putting in that crimes of griswald movie too so it could be somewhat relevant
it is on my list of things to cover :)
Hey there AJ. I was wondering if you’ve checked out Coville’s new Illrigger Class that just got put out, and what you’re thoughts on it are? Could be a good topic for a video? Or maybe a vid talking about a few of the new/home brewed classes you like?
I'll have to check it out.
Cool. Ideally, a role playing game is given a vote from 0 to 2 based only on the presence or absence of two classes : mages and playable undead of various types.
First Comment First View, this is going to be a good day!
*Let them bestride the galaxy like the gods of old, sheltering Mankind from destruction at the hands of an uncaring universe.* - from the teachings of Guilliman, as laid down in the Apocrypha of Skaros, on the Space Marines
One of my favs
these are very interesting beings
one of the funniest fights i was ever involved in was when me and the rest of our party encounterd about 6 of these that ambushed us in a dark cavern.
thankfully since i was an "Angelforged" they were not too interested in eating me lol
So in an area infested with envelopers, light becomes tactical. Is there a monster under your bed? Well if there is a shadow under your bed then maybe? *pictures a drastic life and death fight over a light switch* Question: Could envelopers take a P.C. with them when enveloped, like drag a muffled screaming victim off into a shadow?
AJ you always give it to me straight I have a question who is the most powerful living or Undead character on toril who is not a god some say it's lorick but I want your opinion.
Fantastic
hey could we get a video on Zuggtmoy queen of fungus?
I have no idea who that is, but I second the idea
@@edcellwarrior and that would be why we need a vid on her
They were used by Mathew Mercer , so you know there a great creature .
@nom de plume Sorry , he's the DM for critical role , one of the most popular d&d live streams on the internet .
A creature isn't great just because a good DM used it. A good DM can take most creatures and turn them into a fascinating part of their game, even if they're not the greatest creatures out there. Though darkmantles are pretty great all the same.
@@GringatTheRepugnant I agree.👌
@nom de plume yes I suppose it's not for everyone one , but for someone like me who has never played , but still is a massive nerd , I love to watch D&D and learn about the world , that's why I watch AJ
@nom de plume copy that
I'd like to see a video of people playing a campaign. One from the Dungeon Masters perspective and one from the players were a running commentary.
Has the gluestick covered trappers and lurker above it's nice if u cover monsters that are only in older editions thanks
Can u eat it though?
Absolutely, tastes like Calamari
This makes me think of metal gear solid 3 when Snake asks paramedic what it tastes like each time he captures a new animal.
You can eat anything if you want it hard enough.
@@marvalice3455 True. But sometimes that ends up being a bad idea.
@@martyhoward6727 oh yeah, I totally agree.
Squid bats
I think one video you should work on soon is the wargs.
Already done. we call them Worgs in D&D ruclips.net/video/A2Q6f41OVYs/видео.html
Sorry AJ but.. Darkmantle*
Thank you!
They kinda look like Vampire Squid!
Search it if you dare...
I am quite familiar with the Vampire Squid. Octopi generally fascinate me and I will not eat them at seafood restaurants just on the general principle that I don't eat intelligent creatures.
@@AJPickett Yeah, quite the interesting creatures. Also have you seen a Giant or Colossal squid? Those are some real krakens right there.
I remember when the first gaint squid carcas was found, i felt such vindication... Vampire squids are kind of the opposite of darkmantles, using light to dissorentate deep sea creatures instead of darkness... If only they were gaint & man eating, and battled the leviathans of the depths. :(
