- Tennessee's Pride of the Southland Band salutes Florida Gator fans by playing their fight song Orange and Blue; then proceeds to play Rocky Top as the capacity crowd sings along. 2010 game in Knoxville. A tough year for the Vols, but excitement was high at the game. At least for the first half. :-(
As a life long Nebraska Cornhusker. I've gotta admit Rocky Top is the best fight song in all of college football, gives me chills. Would love to attend a game at Neyland Stadium to experience it first hand some time.
I LOVE THE OLD NEBRASKA FOOTBALL TEAMS, THEY WERE GREAT, BUT I ATTENDED SCHOOL @ UT AND AINT NOTHING LIKE ROCKY TOP ON THE PLANET.......

You're right, of course....most older UT fans (like me) know that Down the Field is the official fight song. Rocky Top became popular in the 70's with the fans and was sort of 'adopted' as our unofficial fight song. But...you'll notice that every time UT scores a touchdown, the FIRST tune played by the band IS Down the Field.....then they play Rocky Top.
Its an experience that you will never forget!

Most college teams play the opponents fight song since both bands can't take the field at the same time during pre game. It's a courtesy.
Gator fan and proud of our win streak, but really happy Tennessee plays the away team's fight song at home games. Only other band I know that does that is Purdue. A lot of respect for that.
Ohio state does it as well, and forms the opposing teams logo in formation
The entire Big Ten does. And most fanbases don't boo when their own band plays away fight songs.

I'm from California, went to college at Long Beach. And i have to say that hearing the UT marching band play Rocky Top gave me goosebumps. Loved it!!!
While I am from Texas and therefore a Longhorns fan, Rocky Top does NOT suck ass Bobby. Each team of any substance has their own fight song or whatever and there is absolutely nothing wrong with Rocky Top. The fact that it is so unique allows it to stand out these days. That rocks. Go Rocky Top.

Hillbilly trash....try "Fight On," "The Victors," Onward to Victory," or "On, Wisconsin! "--THOSE are fight songs!
@@willshaw6405 It's a bluegrass song, not an actual fight song, so what else would it be about? It's just like Alabama's "Dixieland Delight", and my favorite team, Texas, even does "Deep in the Heart of Texas." They're just country/folk songs that connect to the teams' fanbase. And remember, this is the South, not the Midwest or the coasts, so country music is massive there, and it should be no surprise that country music will be played at football games in the South

I'm a Tennessee fan and find this funny. Unfortunately, I'm also a history teacher so I have to point out that rocky top was written well after WWII. Change the war and you've got a winner.

I attended the Tennessee vs. South Carolina game today and singing this song with the rest of Neyland Stadium was one of the coolest experiences I’ve ever had. Go Vols!!
I marched at South Carolina. Being able to hear this first hand is awesome!!! I hate this song, but when you have 100K singing it, it takes on a completely different meaning!

Rocky Top is so rousing that if I was at a UT game I'd be tempted to join in the chant even if I was there for the opposing team. I'd probably have to be escorted out of the stadium by security for my own safety, lol.
Rocky top is one of my favorite songs. I love bluegrass and outlaw country.

In '68 I lived in IN and my brother was stationed at Ft Campbell, KY and one of his fellow soldiers was the son of Felice and Boudleaux Bryant who wrote Rocky Top. One weekend he went home with him to visit his parents. I don't remember if they went to Nashville or Gatlinburg. I was only 12 or 13 and had never heard of the Bryants or Rocky Top but never forgot this story. Now I live just down the road from UT and a big UT fan and LOVE ROCKY TOP!!!
In all of my years of watching football, i don't think i've ever seen another team's band play their rival's fight song. Pretty classy though.
I went to neyland for the first time ever last year when they played ole miss I’m a rebel but my gf and dad are vols fans so we went man y’all’s stadium and fans are amazing 110k is a sight and sound you can never forget it was amazing I love rocky top my favorite fight song in my opinion my rebels got a win and the vols fan went crazy and threw stuff on the field it was a great game I’ll always remember it only thing I didn’t like where the seats man they are so narrow and steep toward the top hotty toddy

Not sure that the Cadets and Midshipmen qualify as a "fan base"....but you're right, they don't 'boo' each other. This is the exception that proves the rule.

As a Canadian, and therefore a complete outsider to the world of NCAA football, I deem the booing "all in good fun". So there!
John Devlin I live in Colorado but have been a Winnipeg Jets fan forever (1981 until they moved and since they came back), and I always love that they play "Oh Canada" when a Canadian Team plays in the US. Very classy.
Not a Tennessee fan but as a fan of college football, I have always wanted to visit Neyland Stadium and hear this live. It always sounds awesome on TV, I can't even imagine how cool it sounds live.

It's a shame more schools' marching bands don't play their guest's fight song as part of their pregame. It's pretty much a staple in Big Ten country, with a couple exceptions, but I rarely see it anywhere else. I love it when the home team shows some class.

Ain't a real fight song...it's bluegrass banjo trash. In Ann Arbor we have a real fight song--The Victors--and we play Earl Scruggs in the stables to make the livestock urinate on schedule.
Murder, moonshine, young love, what's not to like. Great times at Neyland: One time my new seatmate and I got to talking and he had pot and I had papers; into the head to roll and smoke watching the game. Lady in front of us kept trying to interest her date in us, but he was watching the game and listening on small headphones and couldn't be bothered. What could be more important than the game in front of you and the play-by-play on the radio, certainly not some kids behind you not bothering anybody. Smuggled a bottle in every game, but no cameras allowed. Drunk fans fine, but intellectual property not to be messed with.
I finally get to experience this. I am so stoked!

We went to a little restaurant way out West of town and they had the, oh, 12" by 24" scorecards all the way from the 30's to the then present-day. The only times UT beat Alabama were the years everybody beat Alabama or UT beat everybody. I think they are the last undefeated, untied, unscored-upon team, but then lost in the bowl game to USC in 1940.
As a Sooner I have nothing but the upmost respect for Rocky Top and the Vol Nation. We gonna kick your ass next year but still love ya!

I’ve been to a total of 6 Tennessee games and I always sing the rocky top song , because I’m a Tennessee fan.!!
I was at the Oregon Tennessee game the week before and I was singing Rocky Top even though I am a Duck fan. I loved it in Knoxville and at Neyland. The Pride of the Southland was really good. That game turned me into a Vols fan. GO VOLS and DUCKS!!
I sold soft drinks over there 45 years ago and the band, the fans, and the atmosphere at Neyland still gives me a RUSH.
Sorry to see you wrote that. I always try to make the opposing fans have fun, and be glad they came. I do "rib" them and kid around in good humor. I know our fans can be a little rough at times... sorry about that. If I were not an LSU fan, I'd be a Tennessee fan... they are my favorite SEC East team, and favorite non-LSU team. Great people, program, fans. I hope y'all get good again soon.

I was at this game; I'm a student at UF. I'll be objective here: This is a great tradition. I've been to every UT-UF in Knoxville for the past 10 years... Lots of fun. Rocky Top has never bothered me... Now the FSU "War Chant" is a complete other story.

@TheDucksfaninpa2010 ---------thanks for sharing. I was at the UT vs. Oregon game, too. Not much of a second half but a great atmosphere. Now that was a HARD rain! I met many Ducks fans----all wonderful people. We love having visitors to Neyland Stadium; it's like having folks over to your house for a cookout. Tennessee travels to Oregon in September of 2013 to return the favor. I wouldn't miss it!

I was at the Ore-UT game to. Hands down one of the best experiences in my life, classy doesn't even begin to describe the Vol fans. Even after we won, everyone was congratulating us on the win. "Now go kick the shit out of Lane Kiffin for us!". Hope to see a ton of Vol fans at the 2013 game. But word of warning for anyone making the trip, STAY AWAY FROM THE STUDENT SECTION!!!! they get jager'd up like none other and can get really hostile.

@SpurredDevilSC I'm in the Band of Blue at MTSU and have been a Tennessee fan my entire life. We played in Knoxville this year and I was honestly in Heaven. Tennessee has some of the nicest fans in the world. In fact, they even danced with our band. If that's not a welcoming crowd, idk what is. GBO!!

One scene I don't who was who but three young boys was shot over stupidity. I stopped watching it. But I do enjoy the dinner show. I guess that just shows though people was crazy way back then. Fighting n killing that way over a pig I reckon just ridiculous.
As an LSU fan, i'm extremely happy to see the Vols playing some good football again. The SEC is at it's best when the Vols are at there best. GEAUX TIGERS and Go Vols!

Agreed. Coming from another Alabama fan and alum. Another one of their traditions that I respect more than any tradition in college football is playing the opponent's fight song before Rocky Top.

this is awesome. i'm a Michigan fan, but have always rooted for the Vols (except when you kicked our asses in the Citrus Bowl). I think Rocky Top is the second best fight song to Hail to the Victors. I hope Butch Jones can turn things around there.

I have met wonderful UT fans. Good at taking and giving the jabs, but always in good fun. I think every fan base has it's jerks, and I KNOW LSU has it's share. It is a shame, and very embarrassing. But I love UT and it's fans. I hope y'all return to your former greatness on the field soon.

I'm a South Carolina grad, and UT has the worst fans in college football. Every time I've been there I've been treated like crap. I've never been treated anywhere as bad as Obnoxiousville. I hope y'all treat visitors more kindly than y'all have treated us on the past few visits.
