To be fair open alphas and betas did not help Anthem...at all. In these sorts of situations those only work when the studio has the money, resources, and autonomy to make massive gameplay overhauls at the 11th hour without having producers and investors breathing down their necks to force it out the door.
I think coop only counts when the mechanics demand coop; it takes two, destiny raids etc. I still think this looks interesting, I hope they make a surge 3
All jokes aside, just wanted to echo the sentiment that Austin knocked it out of the park, his work as a host is excellent. Having him as another host permanently is gonna be great!
Great review, as always, Aust. But, about the game, is kinda weird they went into this direction, considering they nailed the combat system with The Surge 2.
That's sad to see. I've loved the clips and the trailers for it (lol at the surfing trailer). Devs seemed excited about it too, so it's sad to see it like this.
You might want to add a section that you you played the game 4months ago... You made a video about "your hands on impress" You also played 5h of the game and liked it... What changed since your hands on demo?
Sounds like the hands-on was Ralph, and this review is Austin. Regardless, how a game ultimately comes together doesn't always live up to its perceived potential.
God damn this is a good Skillup impression, the cadence, the tempo of delivery, if I didn’t know it was Austin I’d think it was S with the Aussie version of a cold. The criticism of the writing & delivery is the entire reason games as an art form are being held back. Imagine a game with the dialogue & story by a Tarantino or a Scorcese? Tough, we get generic fantasy fan fiction & wonky lip sync.
unless it was more of a movie than a game like detroit: become human i wouldn't be so excited for that idea, they're great at writing films but games are very different, such as being way longer, so there's no guarantee they'd be good at it
@@dankerbell Without over praising the work in Baldurs Gate 3 its comparison with other game’s highlights this issue. I’m not suggesting a movie game just actual dialogue & plot not ripped out of the 1990’s young adult genre or the CW super hero TV sch tic. I’d just like a quality story in a believable world without fan fiction tropes about marrying a princess, saving the world & being the ‘chosen one’ as these cliches are OLD & tired. In gaming, where YOUR interaction, agency & participation, compared to films & books, is SO much higher & with games having comparable budgets, it’s baffling why the narrative creativity is so much lower. Shouldn’t gamers have higher expectations when games are this expensive? It doesn’t have to be a Telltale game to have engaging dialogue & a story aimed at people over 12. Expect more or get less.
Dang it. No joke, I'm on a role as of late. Every game I've recently purchased day one tends to rank low on the skillup channel. You know a reviewer is excellent when you may not agree, but their points are valid. Thank you, Skillup!
@@hua.. hopefully not, i mean some of the best games ever made have “worse” graphics? Good art style holds up and not all good games are graphically impressive 🤷🏼♂️
I do disagree here to an extend, this is a good AA game. It is a better version of Forspoken with great traversal and a fun customizable combat loop. It is also not outstaying it's welcome and filling the map with busywork. A classic 7/10 game that might not be worth full price, but on sale absolutely worth it.
I see very mixed reviews on this one. Probably something you'd pick up on a sale if the negatives aren't a dealbreaker to you. I think it's visually interesting and I like some of the mechanics. Will keep an eye on it. Thanks for the review!
Tbh, which isn’t surprising to me, skill up is so far the only reviewers out of the handful that I watch that did not recommend it. Everyone from ACG to Mortismal Gaming recommended it even at full price. And none of them are sell outs. But I agree, I think you couldn’t go wrong with waiting for a sale. With so much in the pipe line Q4 of this year, it wouldn’t do any harm waiting
I’m gonna be honest I’ve had more fun with this game then most this year, I wouldn’t look at this video too closely, and bonus, it’s smooth gameplay and the graphics it advertised is actually true.

Ralph if your reading this, hope you had a fantastic Holiday with the family, Cant wait to see what this channel has in store, FPS Podcast is amazing btw, thank you so much for that. Love you guys
Yeah, ACG definitely has the definitive review of this game. I feel like journalists come in to some reviews wanting to like or dislike a game. Runs amazing on ps5. It’s a cool game, I don’t know how you come out of this not recommending it at all.
I almost finished the game and I love it. Sure, it crashed on me like 7 times already, usually after a boss fight and I have to repeat it.. but I love the gauntlet customization, idol system, traversal - double jump and air dash.. lovely! Sure, graphics looks weird, textures dont load, everything pops... but when did we stop playing games for the enjoyment and started rating games solely based on their visuals and technical perfectness? I would definitely recommend the game to my friends - not for the story (ok, voice acting and story itself is terrible), but pure enjoyment of discovering new skills and fighting new monsters :)
The more I see on this game, the more it reminds me of Too Human, but in the sand. I'm surprised no one has made that comparison, yet. It moves and feels like Too Human. That's not a bad thing on its own.
too human was a bizarre gaming experience, and honestly one id like to have again.. waiting for a game like that and one like kingdom under fire circle of doom in the future
@it-s-a-mystery man I forgot all about KuF until you mentioned it. That was also another game we had some fun on back in the day. I think we're all showing our age a little here lol 😆
So happy to see another entry in the BCG Type category. Hopefully the Band Cuff Gauntlet genre will catch on and become as popular as the Souls Like and the ARPG. I am looking forward to the MMOBCGARPG.
I felt as if the game would be awful simply from the trailers... Not a good way to judge games, I admit... But I almost never like games with empty worlds that only have enemies and rarely any npcs
I know it's a bit nit-picky for me to say but why are all the Armor being metal (that's curved with gold) given the environment? heat aside, all that metal would just make everyone sink in to the sand.
Really liked this review as actually gives reasons and footage of what you are talking about. Compare that to IGN talking about co-op all the time and barely pointing out any of these issues about from texture pop in. Feels like they were handed a way to try and sell it....
Austin, I have to say how valuable you've been to the channel. Not just your editing but also your reviews. I follow you on twitter and your own youtube channel and appreciate your perspective. You attention to detail is wonderful and fits very well with Skill-up.
It's so weird to me that these days... a game has to be the next best thing in order for it to be considered "worthy of playing"... its pretty simple... this game has enough fun to found that it's deserving of people giving it a shot...
the german version is way superior, since it is a German Game studio and got AAA production voice cast with the voice of Nicolas Cage and other big stars. its really rare that we get a fully voiced game in the last 10 years as it used to be
This is heartbreaking, I was really excited for a non-souls game and love a good parry. Maybe they can pull this together with an update or sequel. Thank you for breaking it to us gently!

@@BrooklynBornnNot a single part of the game in this review looked or sounded fun to me. I might try it if it ever comes to Gamepass, but I'm definitely not going to spend $60 on a game that I don't think I'll enjoy, especially when there are so many other games I could be playing. It'd be one thing if you just saw a low score and assumed the game was terrible, but Austin made plenty of valid points and backed them up with his experience with the game, so we could make an informed decision (like any good reviewer), so I don't think it's fair to call someone a sheep for not buying it. Its unfortunate that this game didn't really hit the mark. I really really hope this doesn't discourage the developers from trying new things. This is a solid effort, and frankly not a bad game. With some minor improvements this game could be great. This combat really reminds me of old-school games like DMC and God of War and I think they're onto something, just needs more polish. They've had success in their souls-like games, but I personally find it way overdone these days. Every other game is a soulslike or has soulslike combat, its getting old. I hope they keep trying new things like this.
I can't help but still see this game as a fun time, despite all the negatives; I might just pick it up anyway. Thanks for the review, though; it's good to have this information in the back of my mind.
Sad it did not meet expectations :( to be honest I am a major fan of fast hack n slash games and was hoping this one would be a hit. I hope they don't give up on trying something new next time.

Ralph, really makes me happy to see that you share with Austin the reviews. Makes me realize how much of a team you guys are and hope that everything goes well always 😎
ShillUp has probably become my favorite YT video game reviewer, but you're up there with him Austin. I feel like the same level of quality was delivered. Thanks for the review - I'll pass on this one.
I feel like by the time we see a few trailers for new games, many are utterly predictable in terms of reception. Atlas Fallen, Forspoken, and the upcoming Immortals of Aveum all use the exact same formula and all seemed predictably mediocre (we'll see if Immortals completes the trifecta of mediocre magical gauntlet games)
Still bought the game. Most things Austin pointed out are very true. This game will not score high but I play single player games by being as immersed and engrossed in the world as possible. Even with the shitty dialogues I can definitely say that his game world at $50 is 100% better than Forspoken at $70. Giving the AA studio some support because I really liked the animations and style. But definitely recommend this one sale $30 - $35.
Man, with that kind of buildup I was expecting you to say it was 4 or 5 hours or something. 10 is totally fine. Right in the sweet spot, really. 8 to 12 hours is a pretty healthy playtime for a game like this, imo.
Knowing that we wouldn't have gotten this review if it wasn't for Austin makes me so excited for the new direction of this channel. Even more great reviews coming our way, boys and girls! We won't be happy until there's a video every day!
Yet again, to everybody interested in this game I have to strongly disagree with skill up yet again for the 8th time this year, the intro to the game is abit poor and the dialogue is a bit naff, but the combat difficulty (not easy btw) and exploration are well worth the 50 alone, I’m having loads of fun with it, I recommend everything to buy it and play it. Very fun and the world is nice, it’s just nice to have something we’ve seen before and fresh at the same time
I don’t understand when you do those errands in Horizon forbidden West you tout the game as majestic. And when some small developer employs the same mechanic, you call them dull and tedious
I must clearly disagree with you. The game and gameplay is really fun (and I've only played it alone, coop is a whole other thing). The world half-baken? Hell no. No idea what you expected but the world was totally ok. Why you play side quest to level your char? There is no XP progression. WTF you talking about? You upgrade your armor to level up. I could completely refute almost every point you make, but that would be a very very long comment. I actually like your reviews but here you are completely wrong.
I think Austin crushed it with this review and was super thorough with it, but I really miss Ralph reviews. I found myself listening to the Ridge commercial at the end just to get my fix. Austin feels like the stepdad that came into my life after my real father walked out. He’s comforting, consoling, and gentle. But I miss my daddy.
At least the art design and presentation looks great! I wish I could've hear a little bit more about the neutrals and positives in addition to the negatives, even if the positives are scarce in comparison haha. Great review otherwise!
This video made me remember that when i played Lords of the fallen, i had to lower the graphic details because i couldn't see what was going on with all the effects. These guys are slow to learn from their mistakes.
so the story is still as lack-luster as the Surge 2 i guess, make you chase after something the whole game but then at the end, all it did is give you "wait is that it?" feel
I often find devs decide on the engine tech, linear or openworld, then decide what game they want to make based on that tech, instead of the other way around. That's how we end up with generic games like this.

In my opinion, skill up makes the best game reviews on youtube. But Austin is catching up quickly, and he's only done a couple
ACG better but i can see your point
It's mostly in the editing which is Austin.
@@maineman5757In what world is editing more important than writing for a review. They are both important, but sorry to say, the writing is way more important.
Somebody can still have a good review even if its just text. A reivew with written by a grade 5 with the best edditing will still suck.
@@cmattjohnson1692 ACG is great and I love how much detail he gets into his reviews (which average half the length of SkillUp) but it also feels like he rambles sometimes. SkillUp is such a great writer, that's why he's personally my favorite.
@@Geologese nah
Sounds like the kind of game that would have greatly benefitted from an open alpha.
To be fair open alphas and betas did not help Anthem...at all. In these sorts of situations those only work when the studio has the money, resources, and autonomy to make massive gameplay overhauls at the 11th hour without having producers and investors breathing down their necks to force it out the door.
@@elizabethlestrad5282 They only work when the dev team actually listens to what the people testing have to say.
Yeah that did a lot for diablo 4
@@GrimDMasterMind That too.
I think coop only counts when the mechanics demand coop; it takes two, destiny raids etc. I still think this looks interesting, I hope they make a surge 3
As soon as ACG said "talking gauntlet" in the first minute of his review, I already made up my mind about this game.
We've got God of War 2018 to thank for all these talking pieces of equipment/body parts
@@fatbroccoli8 "You're on fire, Kratos! It'll pass"

That’s a dumb reason not to get a game.

A great hidden gem that most people won’t understand and expect too much from?
Yeah, that sucks. Haha
Anyone else getting Atlas Fallen, Lord of the Fallen and Immortals of Aveum confused? All 3 games are being released in a couple months of each other.
I think it’s because they have names that sound like they were taken from a fantasy-title-generator.
i appreciate having the name in the title so i know whose reviewing
...right , they do sound almost identical.
You might want to add a section that you you played the game 4months ago... You made a video about "your hands on impress"
You also played 5h of the game and liked it...
A dloc
unless it was more of a movie than a game like detroit: become human i wouldn't be so excited for that idea, they're great at writing films but games are very different, such as being way longer, so there's no guarantee they'd be good at it
@@dankerbell Without over praising the work in Baldurs Gate 3 its comparison with other game’s highlights this issue.
@@RexCalliber I think the problem is there are a lot of gameplay first gamers, who don’t really care about story, only the gameplay.
“Guys hear me out. A big gameplay feature will be… sand.”
“Bro we’re gonna be millionaires.”
Dang it. No joke, I'm on a role as of late. Every game I've recently purchased day one tends to rank low on the skillup channel.
You know a reviewer is excellent when you may not agree, but their points are valid. Thank you, Skillup!
Learn from this, brother, stop doing that. It rewards poor products
@@7Comic7mischief7maybe he likes the games!
That's a shame. I always appreciate studios trying something new. Hope this doesn't put them off experimenting in the future.
This looks like it could be fun in a year or two on sale with all DLC if they make any
No DLC will fix this lmao, just like Cyberpunk, which people are hilariously blind to.
There wont be any DLC, this game hardly has any buzz around it as it is now.
@@chikensupHave some self-awareness dude
in a year or two it will just look even more dated
@@hua.. hopefully not, i mean some of the best games ever made have “worse” graphics?
@@dylanleff373this the comment I was waiting to see because people’s opinions really don’t influence my decision unless a super vast majority is just like it’s complete nonsense and then I get a chance to play it before purchasing. 18:07 what kinda hums are you used to that you qualify an obvious rumbling as a hum? you live with giants or something?
Been looking forward to this review! Glad to see that Austin is back in the chair for this one. Love that y’all are both doing reviews going forward. Going to get cozy and watch this now. Thanks in advance for another great video, much love to both of y’all!
I'm trying to find out what Austin is talking about here at 18:28 by searching for a video like that on youtube but, I've come out with nothing of the sort. Can someone please tell me what to put in the search bar to find it? I'm very curious to know what he's talking about
Great Video Austin, Thank you very much. As many others have recognized I'm sure, you both clearly have a very similar take on most Video Games in general and it's wonderful to hear both your takes on all video games. Hearing this review along with Remnant 2, Austin I look forward to any review you have on this channel, thank you for your hard work over the years.
Also Sand surfing looks Hella cool
Having played it, I can't say I feel that at all and I subjected myself too more Too Human than I probably should have.
I liked Too Human. Was is amazing or ground breaking? Nah but there was some fun to be had for sure.
too human was a bizarre gaming experience, and honestly one id like to have again.. waiting for a game like that and one like kingdom under fire circle of doom in the future
@it-s-a-mystery man I forgot all about KuF until you mentioned it. That was also another game we had some fun on back in the day. I think we're all showing our age a little here lol 😆
This game is literally nothing like that game lmao
So happy to see another entry in the BCG Type category. Hopefully the Band Cuff Gauntlet genre will catch on and become as popular as the Souls Like and the ARPG. I am looking forward to the MMOBCGARPG.
...this game reminded me of Babylons Fall . Some games you don't need to be told are not good. You just know...! Nice review.

I already liked Austin, but after hearing him correctly use “home in” and not the execrable “hone in,” I’m in love
It's a homing missile, not a honing one
We got two amazing reviewers, HELL YEAH
Finally some sensible gaming reviews / content! nice change of pace on this channel!
When is Austin going to be given full creative control over the channel?
Have never clicked a video so fast.
the german version is way superior, since it is a German Game studio and got AAA production voice cast with the voice of Nicolas Cage and other big stars. its really rare that we get a fully voiced game in the last 10 years as it used to be
This is heartbreaking, I was really excited for a non-souls game and love a good parry.

Pop in is crazy. I hope we can fix that this generation
Man, the "It's coarse, it's rough, and it gets everywhere" really got me. Thanks for saving me £44 and some valuable Baldur's Gate 3 playtime
I can't help but still see this game as a fun time, despite all the negatives; I might just pick it up anyway. Thanks for the review, though; it's good to have this information in the back of my mind.
The graphics look very nice such great design monsters especially. Perhaps in a few months I'll pick it up.
Welcome back, King

These reviews are becoming ASMR for me. ASMR in this instance standing for Austin's Super Magnificent Reviews.
Sad it did not meet expectations :( to be honest I am a major fan of fast hack n slash games and was hoping this one would be a hit. I hope they don't give up on trying something new next time.
Austin I never comment on vids. But I wanted to say, you’re an absolute natural. You’re doing an amazing job and giving wonderful opinions with evidence and great diction. Amazing. Give this man a raise SkillUp!
Austin is now Skill Up. Skill Up will henceforth be referred to as Skill Up 2.
I've always wished it were possible for you to increase your coverage of games, I'm glad you decided to have that new guy Skill Up help out. He's pretty good at this stuff
The analogy to binging Real Housewives of Beverly Hills is inspired and brutal.
Always watch out for games with "fallen" in the title; I don't how many games have failed with it
At least we got Jedi: Fallen Order to break the cycle
Something about his voice makes me trust him completely.. I'm starting to like this channel.
Ralph, really makes me happy to see that you share with Austin the reviews. Makes me realize how much of a team you guys are and hope that everything goes well always 😎
I was surprised your review wasn't at the top of the searches for atlas fallen. I wonder if it was buried because it was an honest negative review
They definitely chose the right bits for its trailer that's for sure
Why was the ad in the beginning not voiced by Austin I wonder? It seems he has an assistant now.
Very fun and the world is nice, it’s just nice to have something we’ve seen before and fresh at the same time
Damn the story of this game sounds like the devs watched one too many Marvel films lately....Gods, gauntlets, fragments of stuff...lol!
Loved Surge 2 and excited by the movement here. What a shame. Thanks for the review!
The game is very good. This guy is just racist don‘t believe him
They should’ve just done Surge 3z. Surge 2 was amazing and one of my favorite Souls likes . Top 3 probably for me personally .
The Surge 2 is awesome!!
Finding out this is from the Surge devs is soul crushing
Austin’s Dora bit towards the end of the video was top tier Austin 😂
Welp, this has shot my excitement for Lord's of the Fallen in the foot. Apparently, these guys can make really good trailers.
What a review! Shill Up is lucky he has such a dedicated reviewer to carry this channel.
the comments section are more about skillup and austin rather than the game.
The best comment I’ve seen from other reviews was “Forspoken but less bad”
At least the art design and presentation looks great! I wish I could've hear a little bit more about the neutrals and positives in addition to the negatives, even if the positives are scarce in comparison haha. Great review otherwise!
This video made me remember that when i played Lords of the fallen, i had to lower the graphic details because i couldn't see what was going on with all the effects. These guys are slow to learn from their mistakes.
Main man Austin is back! So generous of you to let that intern also make some reviews.
so the story is still as lack-luster as the Surge 2 i guess, make you chase after something the whole game but then at the end, all it did is give you "wait is that it?" feel
Great review, Austin. This made me want to go back and play through the Darksiders series again.
A wish choice indeed, I'm doing that right now as well and having a blast.
can you please review the coop mode in comparison to solo mode?
I often find devs decide on the engine tech, linear or openworld, then decide what game they want to make based on that tech, instead of the other way around. That's how we end up with generic games like this.
That's.... Not a thing. The idea that choosing unreal would constrain the game development is absolutely absurd.
It's also how you end up with the Half Life series so ..
