So using the HDMI capture and Orion app the iPad can be used as a portable monitor/screen ?
Apple's next step should be a desktop experience like Dex
They would totally nail that if they wanted to.
sort of limited stage manager (just like on iPad, but Stage Manager only works on external display and app needs to also install an ipad version of it just to be used on external display)
Stage Manager for iPhone
U mean samsung dex 😂😂😂
With the visionpro coming out soon I don’t think they would. Plus, I don’t think that average consumer wouldn’t even be interested in using their iphone as a computer, especially if they have to buy extra stuff like a keyboard and mouse.
Imagine having to only plug in your peripherals, a monitor, and you would have MacOS running right on your iPhone. The fact that MacOS and iOS now both run on ARM architecture just makes this more possible and exciting to look forward to!
You can count on apple to never let that happen. They make ipad useless for their laptop market. There is no way they will give you that even if they can.
android already does that for a couple of years. apple will "invent" it in some years :))
An actually useful version of Samsung dex
@@Grantium_ dex is much more useful than anything iphone can do and even ipads. Not to mention having an actual file explorer and sideloading capabilities.
@@TheRealGigaCatDamn you didn't need to destroy the iSheep like that.
We all know iPads are useless
Android phones with usb c have been doing this for yearssssss. But I must say, its unbelievable to get this crisp footage from a phone. Thats some really good video quality.
You actually can.. check ur settings
Depends on the phone. Pixels (except for the 8 series) prohibit Display Output over USB C.
My brand new Pixel 7a has this feature locked out. Yeah, the maker of Android. Even the new Pixel 8 and 8 Pro still don’t have it. Fuck Google.
Android had hdmi display out since 2013 (galaxy s4) and external devices support since 2012.
cool
I’ve yet to meet a real person who uses Android. I know they exist but I’ve not met one.
We've been quietly enjoying our phones and the features that have been trickling down to yall for years.
@@jeffreymedeiros6253All I have to do is walk around in public to see people using android phones. You don't have to meet them. 😊
@@jeffreymedeiros6253 Go outside? Lol
@5:30 that display says megabytes per second. B = bytes b = bits 1 byte = 8 bits if you want to convert between them
RIGHT! Thanks for that
Correction: mbps or mb/s is not the same as MB/s - i.e. if the B is bigger, it's Bytes, but if its smaller it's bits.
And this is the power of USB-C that we have all been talking about. Apple should have changed to USB-C when they removed the headphone jack on the iPhone 7
You would think! Apple is behind the time. This standard has been in Europe for several years; even Samsung had a USB C last year. Apple makes this out to be an epiphany, but it really isn't. It is more about versatility, which seems new but is behind the times. Perhaps if Steve Jobs were alive, we would have had USB C years back on iPhones.
Talking like Android can do all these lol The USB C on android is not as powerful than Iphone one. Sorry to let you know.
@@synovium"samsung had usb c last year" the first Samsung usb c phone was back in 2016...
@@wds3222bruh on android you can connect even external cameras with the usb-c, it's just as powerful
people seem to praise apple for switching to usb-c for the latest model of iphone, but is the switch that big of a deal? for the regular and plus, i'd say not really and here's why.
for older phones you could just use a lightning hub and it should work just as well as using a usb-c hub on the iphone 15.
you could always use a lightning to hdmi to connect to external display (or airplay) and use blutooth to connect mouse and keyboard.
the only real advantage of usb-c is being able to transmit 4K video to an external display, but the usb c on the iphone 15 only supports usb 2 speed, which is too slow for 4k content.
Now THIS is a respectable tech review! Real IT people cannot gloss over details. Sir, you have included the details and more. WELL DONE!
thank you! appreciate that 🙏
Apple arrived in 2011. How great is that!
Motorola Atrix 4G gave me the same joy back then as this guy is displaying now.
In 2015 I owned the Microsoft Lumia 950 also with the same functionality.
I am now on a 2 year old Xiaomi Mix 4 with under display everything, even an Infrared controller and custom ROM and the best thing: it charges in 17 mins to full with 120W USB-C.
17mins wow
If it charges that fast, the battery probably deteriorates so fast that you'd need to get the battery replaced every 3-6 months.
Good for iphone users! Now they can borrow our charges as well as our 5+ year old features. Cant wait for them to get more than 5x zoom so they can stop asking me to take pictures for them at events. Cant wait for them to get rcs in 5 years so we can share decent quality to them 😂.
Fyi ( "because i like iphones better" is a perfectly good reason to pick a phone over another. So dont go all tribal on me 😅. Super happy for the unified cable finally. Hope you all enjoy your new phones! )
Dude, this is a sick video on connections! Thanks for packing in so much info so clearly!!
Appreciate that, thanks for watching!
I just stumbled on your videos. They are awesome! This one in particular has so much info it almost makes your head spin. Clear, concise and fast moving. Great content.
Appreciate that! Working toward 100K subs for next year 🙏🏻
hahaha awesome video. I was rooting for you to do a sequel of the previous video. Didn't found anything so accurate and to the point as your work. Thanks for that. I gonna get the 15 pro and can't wait to test all of this devices too.
haha appreciate you keeping an eye out!
@@beardfm Had to come back after testing my devices on my brand new phone. Even an AliExpress interface (Teyun Q-22) works flawless with Ferrite (couldn't test with GarageBand). I tested one dynamic mic and one condenser mic. Both worked. I'm stocked!!
Yes this was the vision of USB when it was released in January 1996, one cable to rule them all. Sad it took until September 2023 for iPhone to join the club but here we are!
Glad it finally happening!
They a Lil late to the party 😂😂
As a developer, being able to see the phone on a full studio display is a game changer
Didn't think of that! Very cool
you can output hdmi already since years with lightning
Remember not to tap on the monitor 😂
Why you don't own a computer?
Android needs to step their game up. This feature is definitely a game changer
Awesome that you did a "Episode 2" on this !.. thank you so much. Great work. I think you're correct about the Bandwidth limitation. DELL does something similar to this on their USB-C Hub Monitors,.. the Resolution when you're trying to daisy-chain multiple monitors is limited by the USB-C bandwidth. Would make sense that the same thing applied here. It would be cool one day to see a Thunderbolt chip in an iPhone,. although I can't really see Apple doing that any time soon.
Amazing video Stephen 👍 was wondering about a lot of things you tested
Bro! Nuts man. crazy versatility.
Wild it all works!
While personally I’m all in on wireless in a sense, I have to say you gave a damn good reason for USB-C for those who care to take advantage of these things. Such a good video my friend and now you have me over here wanting to plug all sorts of things and just see what happens. 🤷♂
Haha thank you
This just makes me that much happier that I upgraded from my 13 pro to the 15 plus. Been loving this phone so far. I could do without the 120hz refresh rate and zoom camera. Super happy with the 15 plus. Definitely a worthy upgrade! ❤
Awesome video man! Thank you so much! You addressed almost all of our requests from the previous video. You earned a new subscriber!
Appreciate that! Tried to be thorough 😅
Pretty much everything in this video can be done within the apple ecosystem with any iPhone. USB C just makes it more straight forward, but I've been using my apple tv as a big monitor for my iPhones and Ipads for years with air play. Connecting BT keyboards, mice and controllers to play Xbox cloud gaming since day one. Using dongles to use external USB and SD cards. Only real benefit atm is using external memory for photography which is pretty nice but not a real game changer to what we already had. I do welcome USB C, but it's not like we were tech capped before.
Fax
This tech is 2014, Samsung introduce Samsung Dex in 2017. Wow what a progression.
That’s some awesome testing! Very useful content! Thanks!
Thank you! Appreciate it 🙏🏻
Thanks for solving that lav mic and prores issue. One or the other it is. Hopefully in the future possibly with just a software update--it can be done.
That would be nice! May need more data throughput
That speed test result shown was in MB/s, megabytes. Not megabits. But if you convert it to megabit, that 50MB/s is 400 megabits per second.
Not sure you are testing on iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Pro. Your title vs a few mention of Pro model is a bit confusing but that speed test correlates directly with iPhone 15 usb bus speed limit at 480 megabits per second.
The usb drive you are testing is a flash drive, not ssd (solid state drive). There are massive different in terms of drive interface, NAND performance and endurance.
I hope you start considering using the right terms for your videos. It helps educate people and reduce misinformation. Keep up with the good test exploration!
I tested both in this video, all the accessories and peripherals work interchangeably. But the desk speed test was iPhone 15 Pro Max specifically
I also came here to note the difference between MBps/Mbps. It’s important to know the difference as a tech reviewer. Still a good video. :-) Take care
Shiftscreen 4x is literally like dex for iPhone, full external monitor support with multiple windows, and a full desktop web browser + file explorer, it’s almost like a Safari based chrome OS made for web apps. would love to see someone test that out using an external monitor, keyboard and mouse!
Is it true you can’t even copy and paste between windows? Because that’s a deal breaker
But is it free and comes as part of the OS? Not taking the piss, I have no idea what it is.
@@eno88 no but it definitely should. It’s an app
Well done, I've been waiting for a video demo like this!

@@beardfm I doubt Apple will ever give us MacOS or a Samsung DEX style interface, but it would at least be nice if they would support more aspect ratios and scalable UI on external displays.
Great video,... really apprecaite the research
Glad it was helpful!
I’m shocked… I didn’t think Apple would allow such things even with USB-C. I’d love to know if I could offload some data in my photos app into an external storage drive.
You can export Photos to save externally, but you would have to manually delete them from the Photos app
@@beardfm I believe there are some apps that will delete the photos automatically once exported, as long as you grant it access to your photo library
They didn't "allow" it. They were forced into it by the EU lol.
@@BIIIKESThey were forced into USB-C. They could have kept Lightning capabilities and not extend to all of that.
So it would be copied instead of moved? This is somethng I need to know@@beardfm .. Thanks for asking this questions @MrSamPhoenix
MB/s is Megabytes per second, not Megabits. :)
Good video by the way. As soon as Apple allow full external display at native resolution this will be a game changer. It is unlikely though as that is what a Mac Mini is for. Still, USB-C is long overdue and a welcome addition.
THANK YOU! I was looking for this video.
Glad I could help!
Amazing video! Thanks for testing all those different devices and setups! … although I’m not planning to buy the 15pro 😅
Every device is going to use USB-C by 2027. Great move by the World Governments
Mostly the EU making the push
Most devices already do. Iphone is just 8 years late
Apple was basically the only odd one out, screwing their customers despite the direction of the market.
The audio interface needs to have class compliant drivers to work with any iOS device that’s why some work and some not…
This is the most informative video I've seen about gen 15 iphones.
This actually blows my mind, I didn’t expect any of this to work
I was surprised with every new test 😅 thanks for watching 🙏🏻
Thats great news for Apple lover...its good to see Apple finally let their users have USB-C and experienced what Android users have been fortunate to have for many years
I’m glad you retested powering the hubs externally. The problem with some hubs even on laptops is they need external power to power up hungry devices
Yes, thanks for the suggestion!
Very cool!! Thanks for the coverage
Thanks for watching!
Can you move photos and videos to an SD card? I know you can record straight to an SD card ( maybe this is only ProRes videos though ), but instead of connecting my phone to a computer, can I just move the files to and SD card from the iPhone 15? I am getting my Pro Max very soon and hoping I can.
Welcome to the world of universal compatibility. Its AWESOME! This is why so many have stayed on Android for so long lol
So what do you use your USB-C port for?

2:48 - not allowed probably due to heat management concerns, just like in professional cameras, and also there are workflow issues, because recording that amount of data normally requires storage hot swapping.
Now with the cool new console-class power, we might as well hook it up to our monitors and play with a controller and use it like a console.
Great ingenuity and hard work it finding all these things out. If only Apple would allow the phone to work as a real world mini pc it would be a game changer. Great video, a revelation.

Being able to do all this was the reason i switched back to android from an iPhone 12 Pro Max. i think apple will now come out with their own version of Samsung Dex with is a really underrated feature from Samsung.
Thank you for the wireless mic set up attempt I had that same question

Thanks for the video. Great content. Do you mind showing a video transferring your photos and videos to a external SSD or HDD hard drive (not a usb stick or sd card).
Thank you Sheldon. Thank you for your research, your trial and error and your patience in responding to almost everyone who has messaged you here. I only have a couple questions.
1. Have you tested the video recording with the Western Digital WD BLACK SN850X? I’m interested in that drive for my pro Res recording.
2. Did the Samsung 980 pro pro get hot during the ProRes recording? I’m on the hunt for a cool running NVMe SSD because a new product for video recording by Smallrig where the NVMe SSD goes in the handle. so I’m contemplating using the coolest running NME drive or perhaps even an M2 SATA drive with the MB key. Hi
Good demo. I also did somewhat similar experiment!
I connected the audio unit usb c port, just on to usb A slot on hub with a small usb c to A adapter, it works!. Pls try it.
Usb C works with my TCL NXTwear S glasses, and you can use a rokid hub power the glasses and charge at the same time
@beardfm ,highly appreciate your work on getting to the details of usb c can you do show use the speed of data read and write test in iphone 15
Ahh yes will test!
just picked up my iphone pro max today and will be wanting to try it out with my arturia mkII 88 key controller. I'm hoping it will work to become a portable keyboard w/out the computer. I actually tried an ipad (10 yrs old) with it and the latency was not good. But then I tried an M1 ipad and it works flawlessly, so I'm hoping the same with this new phone. Perhaps if you have some midi keyboard controllers you can test them. Thanks
Hey, can you show 2 usb drives connected at the same time transferir files for one to another?
Hi Stephen, thank you very much for those extrem interesting usb c videos!
Do you know if the following is possible with the iPhone 15 Pro‘s Port?
If I charge the iPhone 15 Pro with MagSafe, could I at the same time, for example, charge my Apple Watch using the USB C port on the iPhone 15 Pro? -> so basically Passthrough Charging?
I couldn't test it yet, im still waiting it to be shipped. Regardless of whether it makes sense, I would like to know. :D
Thank you!
Both of your USB-C accessories videos have 308.5k views! They're within 50 views of each other, that's crazy.
It's really wild! Didn't expect that at all 😅
Can it only be hooked up to a studio display? Or can it be made to work with other monitors?
Can you check if it’s possible to plug in an sd card and a hard drive to the usb-c hub connected to the iPhone and then transfer the contents of the sd card to the hard drive?
5:28 seems like speed is limited by USB's speed. the data controller inside USB also involves transfer speed.
It already supports cable keyboard and mouse since lightning port we use “lightning to usb A” to connect them

First time here. Like your vibe, like your content. Liked and subbed.
Appreciate that, and welcome!
I want to see if it will work with USB-C DAC's and output over optical digital full hi-Res audio 24 bit/192kHz. That would be awesome.
Wow, that might be the most interesting and useful video I've seen about the iPhone 15 until now! 👋
I would have 2 more questions concerning USB-C and bluetooth connectivity though and maybe you could help me to solve that out..
1) first, the interest I could see in it is the fact that (as I already do with my iPads) I can plug in a USB C / USB A adapter which itself hosts the sound card that lets me dictate with the microphone specially designed for voice recognition, attached to the pipette on my respirator. I have muscular dystrophy and typing on my iPhone - even the Mini - is proving increasingly complicated. I'd like to be able to dictate more easily on this device, as I do with the other devices in my Apple ecosystem. Will the port make this possible in your opinion? For the same reason, and since voice recognition is resource-hungry, I'm thinking that the new chip could perhaps be an additional asset in terms of recognition reliability.
2) however, and this will be my last question, even with iOS 17, I still can't get my trackpad to work as an iPhone control interface, even though the menus seem to allow it (just as it's possible on iPads). Do you have any idea why this might be? You showed on your video that it was possible to use an external bluetooth mouse to control the iPhone. Did you have the chance to test it with a Magic Trackpad too?
As a matter of fact, without being able to control it, there's little point in being able to dictate more easily on my phone...
Can we connect the Airpod max directy into the phone and listen that way instead of Bluetooth?
Stephen, I also got my MX Keyboard paired with my iPhone 15 Pro Max as well.
Keyboard and mouse worked with the lightning to USB adapter (or Bluetooth). But when connecting a monitor at the same time, it was not as simple as using USB C due to the vast ecosystem of dongles and adapters and even monitors. I have a KVM built into my monitor and a type C port for video in. I can switch between my PC and phone without disconnecting anything. This would work great for the iPhone 15 but I already have a phone capable of a lot more at a lower cost.
Basically non Apple phones have been doing this for a while is what I’m hearing?

You are great. This is a great review. See you on the next Netcast with Leo Laporte !
Appreciate it! And would love to be on MacBreak Weekly again!
Would be curious to see how it would handle a regular monitor plugged into the usb hub and of course with power applied. Also, confirm the cables were the higher end braided cables designed to trx power, video etc. ?
I used Apple's braided cable and Thunderbolt cables for connected to Display and audio devices. A regular HDMI monitor behaves the same way.
Can you try an external 2.5" hard drive? Does the iphone provide enough power to use such a drive without power from a dock?
What's the actual USB-C transfer speed from the iphone internal storage, compared to the old USB2 speed? Obviously it's not 20x faster, but how much faster really is it?
Love how excited he is about something available years ago in Samsung phones and tablets.
Cheers 👍🏼
Does UTM virtual machine can passthrough device connected to USBC on iphone?
Amazing!! My Android has been a computer then for yrs
What if you have it connected to a monitor and open the camera app, does it show the camera UI or just the video of the camera?
Thanks for doing this test. I realize trying to make a more pro video rig with a usb hub (running ext audio, ssd drive and monitor) will only get you so far. So no 4k video using ssd and usb lav mic. But the work around is. Some of the lav mics now have their own recorder built in. So you could just sync audio later in video editing app to still get a pro video rig, just a bummer you have to go through the hell of slate and syncing! Or use ext audio and no ssd and shoot in 1080p and just upscale video to 4k. hmmm
This was a great video.
Can you please test a Midi keyboard🎹 to see if it works ?
Any models you recommend? Don't have one currently 😅
Connect a UAD Volt to the USB-C and you have a professional audio interface that can connect any studio Microphone... and you can basically make your iphone/Ipad into a portable studio.
It's amazing!
