I can agree with you. You need to have a secondary screen to use Desktop Mode. That's why I never think it can ever disrupt the laptop sales as not everyone wants the hassle of bringing a portable monitor around.
More of limited implementation of iPad's Stage Manager, that on initial connection to external display/keyboard/mouse, will download iPadOS version of the apps installed, then maybe only up to 2-3 apps/windows per stage (from max 4 on iPad and unlimited on Mac) just to not much cannibalize iPadOS/MacOS small market share. Also, iPad-only/ported apps like Final Cut, Logic Pro, DaVinci Resolve won't be available right away.
it needs to be smaller than dex, like external ssd, pocketable size. or maybe apple or some 3rd party will create app where dont need hardware. that should be the goal.

Apple never gave us a MacOS experience on the iPad that is basically a Mac with a different OS already. Expecting them to give us something like this natively on the iPhone is the same as believing in Santa. I wouldn't be surprised if apple intentionally implemented software limitations so that this kind of app does not work properly.
If iPhone gets proper external display support with a stage manager like experience similar to the iPads, I could see iPhones replacing a laptop or PC for a lot of people who do mostly web-based stuff and don’t need pro applications. Although I could also see pro apps start to be developed for the iPhone as well as the chip should be powerful enough.

This phone+ app, paired with jump desktop or team viewer means this phone can replace my laptop potentially when one needs a full web browser or pc app. If one uses this phone as a gaming device, mp3 player, laptop, desktop, and a smart phone??? That’s a great value! This reminds me of continuum on the windows phone, which was fantastic.

As a daily Android Desktop Mode user, I can totally agree with you. I really can't see any reason to get an Android tablet when the phone can give the same experience with Desktop Mode. As for Chromebook, the only reason to get one is because of native desktop Linux support, that's all.
A phone connected to a monitor would not replace my iPad. That has a different function. My iPad does not replace my desktop, different uses. COULD it? Possibly, for some people. I personally would use it for emergencies when away from the office. I wouldn't replace my work desktop in any way. It would also push a user into their ecosystem prodding that user to buy other Apple devices in the future. It is a long term win.
This is literally the iOS equivalent of Android's Taskbar app, which is very useful for phones that has video output support but doesn't have Desktop Mode feature like all Sony flagship phones, Vivo X80 Pro/X90 Pro/X90 Pro+, and Xiaomi 13 Ultra. All it needs now is a lapdock or an AR glass.

This is the reason why im a samsung user but i would change if studio manager would be released on an iphone. At work I never do any personal tasks on my laptops, I could but choose not to. I simply connect my samsung to the USB dock and use any banking apps, browsing etc on the phone and on cellular, this way it never touches my work network.
Apple should combine this and current iPad stage manager. and add this to the iPhone. But for Ipad, provide a more "Pro Version" and give us better apps or a MacOS lite

Wow a super cut down version of something android has had for 10 years plus now. I’m slowly regretting getting a iPhone 15 pro as my first apple product. Considering the “new” things for this iPhone are things that my old galaxy S8 had. USB c, action button, bit it also had under screen finger print reader, heart rate sensor on back, edge to edge screen and much more that even this latest iPhone don’t have.

I'm frustrated with Apple, particularly around the Ipad. We should be able to buy something like a Studio Display with a keyboard/mouse and dock, and with the power in the iPhones, have the iPhone experience out of dock, and a desktop experience equivalent to AT LEAST iPad/Stage Manager inside the dock. I can't fathom what they are waiting for to basically have your Mac be iPhone sized and portable and an iPhone.

I like the idea to be able to use the smartphone as a light computer, and I wish Apple would be doing this for a long time, but I think it would be much better if : 1. It would be using multi 10 gigabits, low latency wireless docking (like 802.11ay) that could be enabled with connecting to a MagSafe wireless charging dock 2. It should be using iPadOS when in computer mode However, at this time, Apple is unlikely to push forward with this kind of idea for several reasons like it is a bit of a geek functionality, and it could decrease overall revenue (as some customers may not buy a Mac computer,…). All that said, if Apple would nonetheless decide to go forward with the idea, I really, really, really wish it to be done wirelessly…

iOS' lack of a DEX equivalent is one of the two blunders keeping me to buying an iPhone, the other being their lack of split screen. I say blunder bc at this point this is totally negligence on their management side.

Except that it's not a new idea. It came two years after Microsoft launched Continuum for Lumia 950/950 XL. Heck, the idea of smartphone as a PC stretched all the way back to early 2011/2012 with the Motorola Atrix 4G and ASUS Padfone.
This alone might make me switch from Samsung to I Phone. I am a Dex Junkie because of business needs. I work with a NexDoc which is like a laptop but is actually an external display with battery and keyboard. Your phone is the PC. My word to Apple is "Fully support this app or make your own!" #appleinnovation 🙂

I've always thought this was a great feature, but apple will never be the one to implement it. Their entire business revolves around getting people into their ecosystem and buying as many of their different devices as possible. Their tech always complements each other, never replaces. And with the iCloud account, everything is synced across devices so the one device solution isn't as lucrative.

it's not profitable for Apple so I doubt it will ever be a reality. The sale of macbook air and some of iPad models will plummete if Apple does this.

The InfiniteX2P is still buggy when used on an IPHONE. Jump Remote now lets me use the External Monitor better than InfiniteX2P.

The app is there to make Desktop Mode experience more bearable, but you're still right. After all, you can also do it with any AR glasses.

This alone might make me switch from Samsung to I Phone. I am a Dex Junkie because of business needs. I work with a NexDoc which is like a laptop but is actually an external display with battery and keyboard. Your phone is the PC. My word to Apple is "Fully support this app or make your own!" #appleinnovation 🙂

I've always thought this was a great feature, but apple will never be the one to implement it. Their entire business revolves around getting people into their ecosystem and buying as many of their different devices as possible. Their tech always complements each other, never replaces. And with the iCloud account, everything is synced across devices so the one device solution isn't as lucrative.
