I was excited to try to connect my lg 27 inch ultrafine 5k monitor to my iPhone 15 Pro but it doesn’t support thunderbolt. This is exactly why I was saying that they should’ve made thunderbolt connectivity as an option or release an ultra series to match the ultra watch this year. USB-C still has its limitations. I assume possibly this could be fixed with a software update, but knowing Apple not likely. It is interesting to see several RUclips reviewers market the external display as a new feature, yet apple’s own displays, do not support this feature.

Which means it shouldn’t work on my studio display but it certainly does! I have to assume Apple did some Apple magic for their own display, and that you have to use hdmi for any other display. Except, in your case where there is no hdmi input. Strange set of circumstances.

I am testing this exact thing on my iPhone XS Max this week in order to mentally justify buying a new 15 Pro Max. I’m going to be doing everything from my daily journaling to video editing, music production, and everything I do in a browser. If I’ve got to spend money on a new phone, I need the one device to rule them all, which means changing everything I use everything else I use for it. This helped me know I would be okay. CapCut and Canva work fine on the iPhone, as do Pages, Numbers, every website I use, etc. I just need to figure out the external monitor bit and I’m good. Thank you for doing this.
I’m doing the same test. Though, I’ll probably wait for the 16 Pro at this point. My MacBook Air has been sidelined, and I’ve been using my 14 Pro for everything. Which so far has been fine, but I’d like to have USB-C when using it with the external display. Theres a lot of work-related apps like Pages and Numbers that for whatever reason just work better for me on my iPhone.
Not filling the whole screen is just a bad experience and noone would consider this an option for an extended period. A proper desktop mode needs to support 2160p60.
0:20 No it's not. Multiple processors (or "cores", rather) would be used even if you're editing just a single video. The load will be spread across multiple cores if the software you're using is any good. Also, there are loads of other things going on in the background that are making use of those multiple cores as well.
Samsung have had this with Dex for quite a while now and it works like a desktop computer. It works so well infact, I've used it twice in 5 years or so........
I did this for a while and have a few recommendations 1) you can program a button on your mouse to go back to the home screen. 2) better yet, use a launcher app and have it in the Notification Center. Assign a mouse button to open the NC. This way you never have to go to the vertically oriented Home Screen as NC works in portrait and landscape. 3) Apple TV is a great way to hook up to a monitor. Just screen mirror from the iPhone and in a few seconds everything is working wirelessly.
Why Apple not just replicate the samsung feature like the Samsung DEX ln the note and S series phone, that current feature youre showing is just mirroring screen like a basic Android Phone can do it too dont need an iPhone to do that, Apple should make something like Samsung Dex, im also using an iPhone for social media and samsung for productivity, it would be cool if an iPhone has official desktop mode, like youre owning a handheld Mac xd

Looks like they don’t make Final Cut Pro available to download on a phone. Maybe the interface is too intricate? I used it briefly on an iPad and it worked plenty smooth and fast, so like anything else it would work even better on this phone! That is crazy how powerful they made this chip.
That force vertical mode of Apple has destroyed the world by changing everyone's eye socket position to that of a deep sea flatfish. Instead of having left and right eyes, in time people will slowly morph into top and bottom. And iOS seriously need to catch up to Samsung's DeX and Huawei's desktop mode.

idk why but when I try to use my iphone 15 as a "computer" my monitor does not recognize the signal, idk if it's a monitor problem or my iphone's problem I thought that maybe it could be due to the usb 2.0 on the regular iphone 15, but for what I know older iphones could be also used with this mode :/
A17 pro has alot of power for a mobile chipset, if only apple would not limit the capabilities of its hardware via software limitations, they can make it like the one samsung is doing or even better (Dex mode), but sure thing is that they would not want to make it happen for a phone but maybe, just maybe for their ipads in the future, even their M1 ipads are way too powerful for what it does now, its just that i believe they want to set priorities and functionalities for the category of devices they have for what they think is the purpose. People will still buy apple products for what they are. They make people wait for a year with few improvements but surely are significant and would want yourself to buy one just for the experience.
Yeah that iPad Pro M1 could just straight up run MacOS Sonoma and BE the worlds lightest super capable computer. MAYBE a thermal issue? More likely a self-limitation so that we all buy both laptops and tablets. I know I do.

A phone is a phone. Try making music or a video editing on a phone. It just sucks . MacBooks are still a necessity. Even typing on a laptop beats typing on a phone.

I have a clear screen on my OLED TV with a keyboard and there’s not much I can’t do with my phone iPhone and it’s an iPhone 13 unless somebody requires a website to do register pay bill whatever I’ve been able to use my phone. This is the future. I wish I knew some people that want to get in because that’s where we need to go andI’m interested in changing the world and the way we do things

Being able to use my phone as a computer would be amazing... Would do everything I need of it except for xcode... But that won't happen... As it is the software is easily 5 years behind the hardware... It's pitiful. I'm hoping DeX puts some pressure on apple.

I used my iPhone 11 Pro Max as my only computer. It was fine but then I built a i9 gtx 4090 so I can play video games and multi task on two 32” 4k monitors with 144mhz which is basically 8 1024 monitors on a custom 4’x8’ desk. It’s way more comfortable to use than my phone as a PC. Also you can command+tab to change apps instead of swiping. My next setup might be just my phone though. Its close. Maybe by then I’ll just use spatial computetung so I don’t need a mouse or keyboard. But face sweat and breaking out concerns me
Its trying to compete with Samsung Dex, if you havent looked into Samsung Galaxy phones like the 23 Ultra. Its lightyears ahead of the Iphone, espeically in this way.
Ugh, it was so annoying. It’s this cheap 50mm lens that was jumping one tiny step with autofocus forward and back. It’s the focus changing but the tiniest amount back and fourth super fast causing the shake. I should have manually set that lens since it was only for the screen anyway
You can pair your magic mouse to an iPhone 15.. but you have to make sure its not currently paired with anything else, it will only talk to one device at a time.
That’s my point, though. The chip in this phone is AS powerful as the base model M2 Mac minis, which can handle all that. They can technically do that. It’s just not ‘enabled.’ (And I’m sure overheating would be a huge issue, making a phone waterproof means there certainly isn’t any air moving around.

What I meant to convey was that this processor is basically the same as an M2 Macbook base model. Not quite the ram and graphics power of a MacBook Pro, but you’re definitely right- it could EASILY handle photoshop or Lightroom or Final Cut Pro.
Apple would very easily spend time creating a way for you to save money and not buy their iPad and MacBook. Because that’s what Apple is known for… saving you money. If you want to use your phone like a desktop there’s only Samsung at this point.
I connected the phone to my monitor with a usbc (thunderbolt) cable, and the back of this monitor has four more usbc plugs on it, so I plugged the keyboard and mouse into the monitor.
Yeah except when you showed iPad connected windowing is awful. The files app is a mess. If Apple basically gave us the Finder app for iPad and iPhone so that it looked similar - ya know gui continuity and familiarity… Even more amazing would be if you’re files in Finder on the Mac looked the same as they do on iPad and iOS and you just right click and say download to local machine it then syncs any changes back to the other devices
I’m pretty sure we could just run macOS just fine on these processors. Even if it had to restart when I connected it to a monitor, I’d be happy to have both iOS and macOS installed and switch between them.

Right? Lately, I pretty much find myself only really using my iPad when I’m already at my desk and my laptop is still in my bag or something so it’s just quicker to connect it to my display and check emails or write stuff. They’re a software update away from just doing that with my phone instead.
having said that - even a super old laptop (my working one is a 2018 macbook air) is way more productive than a phone, with split screens using Sizeup, shortcuts, ability to hook up to external monitors, etc.
@@thedownloshowyeah, that’s kind of my point.. the a17 bionic chip in this phone is like 11 times more powerful and capable than that MacBook Air, and the usbc port on the bottom supports 10GB data which is enough for multiple 4k monitors! They would just have to enable the settings. The a-series of chips are the same architecture as the M1-m2-m3 chips. They can do all the same things. But apple doesn’t have the software set up to allow it.

I dont understand the problem youre having.. You can use a USB-C to HDMI hub or adapter to connect to any monitor.

The biggest reason this isn't fleshed out is that it will cannibalize sales of their laptops and desktops.

Have you tried this with the Final Cut Pro app? It’s crazy to think of editing videos with a phone, but it seems totally plausible.

idk why but when I try to use my iphone 15 as a "computer" my monitor does not recognize the signal, idk if it's a monitor problem or my iphone's problem
I thought that maybe it could be due to the usb 2.0 on the regular iphone 15, but for what I know older iphones could be also used with this mode :/

A17 pro has alot of power for a mobile chipset, if only apple would not limit the capabilities of its hardware via software limitations, they can make it like the one samsung is doing or even better (Dex mode), but sure thing is that they would not want to make it happen for a phone but maybe, just maybe for their ipads in the future, even their M1 ipads are way too powerful for what it does now, its just that i believe they want to set priorities and functionalities for the category of devices they have for what they think is the purpose.
People will still buy apple products for what they are. They make people wait for a year with few improvements but surely are significant and would want yourself to buy one just for the experience.
Yeah that iPad Pro M1 could just straight up run MacOS Sonoma and BE the worlds lightest super capable computer. MAYBE a thermal issue? More likely a self-limitation so that we all buy both laptops and tablets. I know I do.
If they did that no one would buy an iMac or macbook. What if someone made a touchscreen monitor and you could dock your iphone and turn it into an ipad. That would be awesome

A phone is a phone. Try making music or a video editing on a phone. It just sucks . MacBooks are still a necessity. Even typing on a laptop beats typing on a phone.

Hey man, this is absolutely the future it really is. I’ve been using my phone for almost everything. I have a clear screen on my OLED TV with a keyboard and there’s not much I can’t do with my phone iPhone and it’s an iPhone 13 unless somebody requires a website to do register pay bill whatever I’ve been able to use my phone. This is the future. I wish I knew some people that want to get in because that’s where we need to go andI’m interested in changing the world and the way we do things
switching the apps...in that point...that is not the desktop computing.....why don't you use the Galaxy phones?? you can feel what real desktop computing equivalent is that is dex mode...

SUPER low latency, but its really awkward to have to touch the iPad screen, but look at a monitor.

Being able to use my phone as a computer would be amazing... Would do everything I need of it except for xcode... But that won't happen... As it is the software is easily 5 years behind the hardware... It's pitiful. I'm hoping DeX puts some pressure on apple.

If the iPhone 15 Pro can handle intended workloads as well I would just get that otherwise, I would stick to a vanilla iPhone and consider getting a costlier MacBook Pro.

Yeah, I mean, I would use it as my main computer for everything other than editing. Its too bad.
I used my iPhone 11 Pro Max as my only computer. It was fine but then I built a i9 gtx 4090 so I can play video games and multi task on two 32” 4k monitors with 144mhz which is basically 8 1024 monitors on a custom 4’x8’ desk. It’s way more comfortable to use than my phone as a PC. Also you can command+tab to change apps instead of swiping. My next setup might be just my phone though. Its close. Maybe by then I’ll just use spatial computetung so I don’t need a mouse or keyboard. But face sweat and breaking out concerns me

Its trying to compete with Samsung Dex, if you havent looked into Samsung Galaxy phones like the 23 Ultra. Its lightyears ahead of the Iphone, espeically in this way.

Ugh, it was so annoying. It’s this cheap 50mm lens that was jumping one tiny step with autofocus forward and back. It’s the focus changing but the tiniest amount back and fourth super fast causing the shake. I should have manually set that lens since it was only for the screen anyway

You can pair your magic mouse to an iPhone 15.. but you have to make sure its not currently paired with anything else, it will only talk to one device at a time.

That’s my point, though. The chip in this phone is AS powerful as the base model M2 Mac minis, which can handle all that. They can technically do that. It’s just not ‘enabled.’ (And I’m sure overheating would be a huge issue, making a phone waterproof means there certainly isn’t any air moving around.

What I meant to convey was that this processor is basically the same as an M2 Macbook base model. Not quite the ram and graphics power of a MacBook Pro, but you’re definitely right- it could EASILY handle photoshop or Lightroom or Final Cut Pro.

Apple would very easily spend time creating a way for you to save money and not buy their iPad and MacBook. Because that’s what Apple is known for… saving you money. If you want to use your phone like a desktop there’s only Samsung at this point.

How did you connect the keyboard and the mouse to the iphone
I connected the phone to my monitor with a usbc (thunderbolt) cable, and the back of this monitor has four more usbc plugs on it, so I plugged the keyboard and mouse into the monitor.
Yeah except when you showed iPad connected windowing is awful. The files app is a mess. If Apple basically gave us the Finder app for iPad and iPhone so that it looked similar - ya know gui continuity and familiarity…
Even more amazing would be if you’re files in Finder on the Mac looked the same as they do on iPad and iOS and you just right click and say download to local machine it then syncs any changes back to the other devices
I’m pretty sure we could just run macOS just fine on these processors. Even if it had to restart when I connected it to a monitor, I’d be happy to have both iOS and macOS installed and switch between them.

Those work on iPad but the phone doesn’t do it. Obviously that could be very simply programmed in, I wonder if apple has plans to market desktop computer/phones. They’re totally more than capable.

Great idea! Was just thinking about this today as I was on my commute - I work a lot on my phone, and don't think I need an ipad when my iphone is way more powerful!
Right? Lately, I pretty much find myself only really using my iPad when I’m already at my desk and my laptop is still in my bag or something so it’s just quicker to connect it to my display and check emails or write stuff. They’re a software update away from just doing that with my phone instead.

having said that - even a super old laptop (my working one is a 2018 macbook air) is way more productive than a phone, with split screens using Sizeup, shortcuts, ability to hook up to external monitors, etc.
@@thedownloshowyeah, that’s kind of my point.. the a17 bionic chip in this phone is like 11 times more powerful and capable than that MacBook Air, and the usbc port on the bottom supports 10GB data which is enough for multiple 4k monitors! They would just have to enable the settings. The a-series of chips are the same architecture as the M1-m2-m3 chips. They can do all the same things. But apple doesn’t have the software set up to allow it.
