- Happy Friday! Grab some popcorn and enjoy! We were very lucky while traveling through Alabama Hills, CA to run into TrailSurfers.net. We saw the rig in downtown Lone Pine and creeper-stalked them to hear more about their great journey and epic rig, the Volkswagen 1996 LT40. It's a VW bus on steroids! Enjoy the video and learn more about their journey! Travel along!

I see they are selling this impressive rig down in South America for 35K (Euros) - what a vehicle, maybe we should upgrade? :)
They are on an AMAZING adventure. Wow.
Amazing!!! My best wishes for the Great couple who are in a marvelous trip
finally, a big one was landed in America. thank you trailsurfers.net

I simply love the stunningly clean interior!
Man this is simply freaking awesome. Love these guys!

Thanks Michael and Corrie. They seem to be cool peeps and I love their rig.
+AgentDarkBooty thank you!
That was way cool hope they have the journey of a life time in the Americas..
Thanks for posting their web site..
Sweet rig. Thanks for sharing.
Very unique rig. I especially liked the bed area.
We saw these guys camping in St Andrews state park Panama City Beach Florida.
I thought my Chevy G20 was big, this thing is a beast! We were in Lone Pine last month climbing Mt Whitney.
Outstanding
Good interview guys 😎 Really nice LT
so awesome
Awesome find... This is what makes travel so much fun, the people and the stories. Really enjoied the video, might suggest in the future some prepaired questions to ask when you run into another killer rig like this one. I have a few 4x11inch flash cards with questions when the cat gets my tongue as it so often does. Cheers
I have lived in Europe for 17 years never seen one. Very cool
+SammyT 96LX450 Super rare!
Saw this this in Ramona California at the Starbucks, had to look it up.
that's a beautiful van!
I bought a LT45 which im converting to a camper. I came up with the same idea for the bed as these guys, looks as good as i hoped it would!
The first moment, that guy was talking I was like: fuck he is German. Makes me so Proud to see my people all around the world with an awesome attitude and a dope ride :) #team Germany #allthewayup Grüße aus Bayern. LG philipp

Credit is a bad word for Germans these guys worked their behinds off since they started to work saved saved and saved until they had the money to fulfil this trip, this guy did not awake one morning and decided I want to travel, at the age these guys are its a life plan. One big lesson for all save and don't spend what you don't have until you can. And I bet this guy is a technical guy that works German industry, bet his girlfriend is not only a pretty face she worked as well to be able to do this.
Just love this kind of people that just leave every thing behind and just flow with the life.. wish i could give up my life, sell the house and hit the road for a couple of years. Thanks for the tour! awesome car and great intervju.
I will come by you with my car when I pass you in the US in some years so you could intervju me :)
Awesome! Can't wait!
They're In Buenos Aires now....
That's crazy that a vw, but I love it. it is a bit high. we dream daily of our next build. We really want to stay short enough to fit in containers. Where are these guys now? we are in Guatemala.
aw, I found them...already in Chile
The Traveling Together Journal Most common Standard Shipping container sizes: 10x8x8 feet tall. 20x8x8 feet tall. 30x8x8 feet tall. 40x8x8 feet tall. 53x8x9'6"tall.
Hope this helps.
😀
that's awesome. if I didn't have 2 kids and my wife was on board with it....I'd sell everything and travel the world for 2 years like that couple.
RENT THE HOUSE OUT - USE IT AS THE KIDS EDUCATION - THEY'LL THANK YOU FOR LIFE!
alright for smooth terrain i guess, but so top heavy for the rough stuff. wouldn't want to take it off road, but a great van none the less
:D The German Overlander :D
wow, just tracked them down... they're already in Colombia
Over 8k lbs? yeahhh I don't know much about this but that sounds just incredibly heavy for one of these even with all of the gear.
Looks like you guys need a wide angle lens!
Checkout the Tokina 11-16 and the Rokinon UWA
Both great for Nikon and Canon.
Will do, thanks!
+Overland Bound keep up the awesome content!
Great video, but i think it was recorded to close (just my two cents.)
СУПЕР!!!
Best tires ever! My van weighs 8,000 lbs too when traveling. I still get near 20mpg. I wonder what these guys get.
Downside is their center of gravity is really high. Makes me feel better about mine. I want to get my 6 batteries down underneath to lower the COG.
consaka1 20mpg is pretty good
yeah it's not bad. My grandfather claimed 25 when it was new. I believe him because of how he drove it. lol Speed limit was 55 at the time and he baby'd it during break in. smh. So he probably never broke 50mph. which is just about where lockup in overdrive occurred. So lowest RPM in the top gear with low wind resistance.
consaka1 no it's NOT!
CENTER of gravity is not equal to height! these are two totally different animals! where do you see weight placed very height?
from the US I see mostly trucks with regular high where you can just sit. to compensate the lag of room (like unused hood) people put heavy (pseudo) duty roof racks on top:
tires, gas cans, fold up tent with sleeping bags and mats etc.
PUT this into REAL numbers and compare.
+der Jack Apparently English is not your first language. No where did I say center of gravity is equal to height.
The fact of the matter is the center of gravity of the vehicle is the center of the rotational mass. If you add weight to the top of the vehicle you are raising the center of gravity. In ANY vehicle it is best to keep the COG as low as possible. This is very important for trail rigs that can get off camber. It is also the reason race cars work very hard to keep their COG low. A high COG is just asking for a rollover when pushed to perform. Tires are heavy items and I would never put one on a roof rack. It is not smart unless you go low speed on flat ground. Then I suppose it would not matter.
Nothing was said about any mods done to the engine or drivetrain. :( Wouldda been nice to hear.Awesome rig though!!
My guess is the drivetrain is probably nearly stock as it's quite good already. The LT 4x4 had for examplpe axle lockers and snorkel available from factory. Engine in these is usually VW 2,4 litre straight 6 cyl turbo diesel, about 100 hp as standard. :)
What kind of awning is that, I have a lifted van and im looking for one
Hi what size wheels and tyres are on this rig.. it's awesome u want my LT35 to have wheels like this even though it's not the 4x4
it looks good but i wouldnt go 4x4 with it. waaay to high center of gravity on that thing
that is the vw LT
LT 40
what car is that?
Watch also for "Pistenkuh.de" Sabine and Burkhards Truck on there journey.
About the engine power by what tipe of diesel ,and the dif one ton or ??
kiki garcia axles aren't measured in tonnage in Europe, but it is technically a 5 ton axle.
It would be a VW diesel made under a contract with Volvo, 2.4 turbo in line 6 about 90-130BHP depending on year (a different turbo and fuel injection was used)
That thing will last forever VW diesels are built like brick shit houses. They normally last 200,000-600,000 Miles before you need an overhaul
Does it have any suspension work done? Ummm YES. It's a tank
what nav app are they using? looking for the same setup, thanks!
+Brandon Tran I think they were using iOverlander, but for mapping you may also try maps.me - works off the grid!
+Overland Bound you're the man! love your vids. Hope to run into you guys sometime in NorCal!
+Brandon Tran awesome! See you in the trail!
How many miles to a gallon?
Marzbars 7 She'll go 300 hectares on a single tank of kerosene.
Where can I get an affordable rig like this In the US? I know it a custom build but still.
roughy762004 if you plan on getting a VW LT van imported into the USA, make sure it's pre-1993 because the 25 year self-importation rule still is in effect as per NHTSA and EPA/DOT
K, THANK YOU!! ^ - ^
Too much background music
Is this desiel?
yes, most things here in Europe are oil burners over 2 ltr- I get 45mpg out of my camper if I'm careful- 34 if I 'get along' a bit
Yo That Rig Is F&£#ing Ahhhhhsome...! Can't log onto Trailsurffres. Help
I did I did...Woman...PIA
man an free advice, try to film nice, u don't think the plans before..try it!
Bishoppp
That rig is bad-ass! 4 metric tons for a VW bus is crazy. Europe has so many awesome vehicles that we can't easily get here. This is my rig, it's one of the cooler vehicles one can get in the States.......

BAZYRKYRS BUNKER anything before 1993 can be imported into the USA. But it's high time for NHTSA and EPA/DOT to scrap the 25 year importation rule. The rule needs to be amended to 5 to 10 years, depending on the emmissions equivalency to the EPA emissions and seat belt pre-tensioner strength
