Oris's website (FAQ) says they use Grade 2 titanium for their titanium watches. Please, how did you confirm that Oris uses grade 5 titanium for this watch? Also to clarify, grade 2 can be polished, just like steel and grade 5 ti, but polishing is often not employed. Seiko uses pure Grade 2 titanium on many of their zaratsu polished watches.
@@TOKKANTE Yes you have and do. Your info is succinct and to the point. You give the impression as affable and not pretentious and I appreciate your style. Keep up the good work and Thank you as I know it requires a lot of work to make these vids.
Yes that's another good topic! I wanted to include the Bathyscaphe Titanium that recently came out but it's actually Grade 23 Ti and all brushed so it didn't qualify! But I love that one though, to be included!
I just bought a JDM Seiko titanium solar quartz radio controlled everyday perfect time watch. The perfect grab and hold watch. Never needs a wind or to be set
That's right, a bit less mainstream in terms of design but that's the whole point I guess! I still prefer that (now discontinued) Zenith Defy compared to the new Skyline.
Small correction - you mentioned that the L888 movement in the Longines Spirit is based on the ETA 2824, but as far as I know it is based on the 2892 :)
Heat resistant? If you're putting your watch near anything so hot that you're worried about its heat resistance, then I highly recommend pulling your hand back and walking in the opposite direction.
Hahaha yes that's for sure! I don't think it means you can put your hand in an open fire though, more like it won't conduct heat easily so the watch doesn't get warm from body heat, like ceramic. In a hot climate like HK it's actually a good thing!
Nice one Ben - yep I didn't know about the Oris - a super sleeper! Overall, I think G5Ti is the ultimate sports watch material: tough, stealthy, silky and light! I've owned a SS Spirit and it was great (and the Ti is better), but do watch the lug length. Overall it's a big watch for 40mm (why I sold it). The GSs are another level entirely - you won't find a better Ti watch - next level! I do like the Zenith, but would prefer it at 38/39mm (like most 40/41mm non- divers/chronos). Well done for divotting out the obscure Omegas - Make mine a Ploprof!
Yeah I agree that the Spirit seems to wear a bit bigger and I think maybe it's because of the lugs design, kinda strong. The lug-to-lug should fit most on the 40mm but it's not exactly a svelte watch. The Zenith Defy however does wear smaller I guarantee (non chrono obviously) with a 45mm lug-to-lug and very small links. Oh I do love me a Ploprof! I want one someday but it's just hard to justify because it's not exactly an everyday watch!
@@TOKKANTE zenith is by far doing much more with movements and materials. The price point is where it’s tough. Maybe to look for bargains. Like you found with the bronze spitfire Right now the black bay ceramic is the sweet spot for non steel watch. The closest is omega & zenith but at +$8K. But I can’t stand the helium escape valve. Wouldn’t by the omega ceramic even at the same price as Tudor.

Ben, you are way off the mark with entry level. I have a Seiko SARX 055 that is under $1000US. It looks a lot like the Snowflake, but without the power reserve indicator, and it is highly polished and brushed, which makes me think that it's grade 5. Check it out.
@@TOKKANTE Grade 2 titanium can be polished just like grade 5 ti and steel. However, because it is a soft metal, it requires a higher level of skill to polish and satinate without showing finishing mistakes. This is why so many manufacturers simply media blast it or satinate it without any polished bits. Seiko uses Grade 2 for Astron/LX and some Prospex, and they are often polished. But, Seiko has a reputation for being able to polish titanium skillfully. Also using Grade 2, are IWC, Breitling, some Omegas, Panerai, Citizen, Ball, Tag, and many other brands. If the brand doesn't market the product specifically as Grade 5, it is almost certainly grade 2. I found confirmation that the Longines Spirit and the Zenith Defy are using grade 5 titanium. I really enjoyed this video. Thanks so much for creating this great content.
Love titanium, but I really wish watchmakers wouldn't polish titanium. I love the look of brushed or media-blasted titanium, and polished titanium is a scratch magnet.
I own a Swiss mechanical. I won’t wear hardly at all. It is too big. I live in Detroit wear most days are spent in long sleeves and jackets. I like what Rolex has achieved with their small cases, but the brand doesn’t seem special due to the mass production. It’s time watchmakers focus on luxury quartz watches that present quality, and compliment the clothing we wear.

Ben, you impart more quality information in the least amount of time about watches than anyone on you tube ! Excellent work love it !
Thanks that's very high praise but I don't think I'm quite to that level yet!!!

Great video Ben and some excellent choices. What about titanium dive watches as a category? You’ve got the Fifty Fathoms and the Pelagos to start with

Defy is delightful. I recently found a great deal on an aqua terra and went with that, definitely a great choice.
The longines spirit us such awesome value, amazing history, grade 5 titanium, cosc chronometer movement, such an awesome watch for the price point
Great video, I’ve been doing the same exercise. Porsche Design also makes lots of titanium models.

Great video. The CW Bel Canto is also made of G5Ti
Wow thanks Ben-a mmooosstt appreciated review!
And now that Zenith Defy's days are numbered! It will be discontinued for the new Skyline (not titanium).
Love the Zenith Defy.
Me too, stay tuned for a review next week!
Great video Ben! For me as well zenith!
Looks like Zenith is only getting started this year! Let's hold and see what else they come up with in 2022...
Small correction - you mentioned that the L888 movement in the Longines Spirit is based on the ETA 2824, but as far as I know it is based on the 2892 :)
oooh, yes, shame on me! I like the 2892 better too! Nice catch, at least someone is listening!!
Thank you for this really informative video.
Thanks for watching it! The Zenith Defy is already discontinued now!
Great Video Ben.
Thanks for watching! I'll review the Zenith next.

Ti watches used to be limited to tool watches, now there are more choices. the Zenith is still my fave tho!

The Best Buy for a grade 5 titanium piece is the Horage Autark.
Oh I've never looked into that one, thanks for mentioning it!
Do you know what oceanus has 2 or 5, they have the polishing like gs

Thank you for doing some investigative research and not just regurgitating the same content that every other watchtuber is putting out.
Haha, thanks, maybe that's because they're much bigger and have sponsors so they have to talk about the same watches!
I think Oris Aquis is made of grade 2 titanium, not grade 5.
Correct
I stand corrected, but how do they polish it then? I always read that Grade 2 Ti cannot be polished, but this one is!

@vote4blake how can I know if my watch is grade 2 or 5? Can I identify it by rubbing an ink eraser?

I just got the Tudor Pelagos FXD: not a single polished surface on that Ti Grade 2!
