Teena Marie is a legend! She is mainly known as a r&b singer --'Lovergirl' is her only pop music hit. Teena Marie was called The Ivory Queen of Soul, because she is one of few White r&b singers that was embraced by the African-American community as one of their own. She was also one of few White artists signed to Motown Records in the mid-1970s. In fact, they left her picture off of the cover of her first album, for fear that Black listeners wouldn't listen to her if they knew she was White. Obviously, everyone discovered that Teena Marie was a real soul singer with soul singer influences. She had numerous hit songs in the 1970s and 1980s. She made a comeback in 2004 and released a few more albums until her tragic and untimely death at age 54 in 2010 of a grand mal seizure. She remains one of my favorite singers ever. She wrote and produced her own music, as well, which was unusual for a female r&b singer of her time. As far as other songs to react to, I suggest the ballad 'Casanova Brown.' it is a song that shows off her amazing voice and her jazz influences.
