I saw Teena Marie in concert back in the day, her voice live was just as good as in the recording. A really underrated vocalist - the ivory queen of soul.
Teena!! This song was a huge crossover hit...1984, was such an AWESOME year for music. It really was. Teena Marie has a unique place in music history (look up the Brockert Initiative) and a beloved place in the hearts of R&B fans that will never be duplicated.
Amen!
Crossover.... to who? Just asking for clarity
Crossover from R&B charts to top Billboard Hot 100 chart.
@@carladavis1473 because she was always accepted by the African American this album ( starchild ) was supposed to help her crossover to the pop "white" audience
@@travonarrington8636 right. I was wondering if she meant the other way because she was always accepted by African-Americans from day one. Ok I got it. Thanks
Teena Marie is an honorary sister.
This is the same era as Prince's 1999 album, which was amazing!!! Prince is the GOAT! This song was released in 1984! Like her male counterpart, Rick James, Tina was very talent with great vocals and as a musician and songwriter! RIP Tina!
Teena Marie was a BEAST she was uber talented and she gets a plate at the cookout no questions asked
This and Square Biz were 2 of her best up tempo jams.
Teena was so awesome! I saw her live when this was on the charts. She had so much soul! Sorry she’s no longer with us. Good choice!
My girrrrrrllll from DAY 1. Always liked this video. Yes, she played keyboards 🎹 and guitar and more! 🎸 🔥🔥🔥 RIP Queen TEENA.🙏🏾
LADY T. ! RIP, GORGEOUS LADY TEENA MARIE ! -------------------------MJL, 76 Y/O
Tons of great music dropped in 1984. She played the rhythm guitar, keyboard, percussion drums, piano and congas. She was that good. Lady T is truly missed!
This song was HUGE! If you haven’t seen her Unsung episode, definitely check it out.
JJ, you are watching greatness at work. This song Teena Marie's biggest r&b crossover hit ever!!! It peaked at No.1 on the Billboard Soul chart and it peaked at No.5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This was the only time that she has a Top 5 song on both charts.
Actually it was # 4 on the pop chart and 9 on the R&b chart!!!
This was her 6th album my high school years
she was serious bizzness. loved this and Square Biz too.
Classic teena this was nonstop playing on the radio good one
That was some Rick James infusion.
Lady Tee was no joke!!
Yup!
Go ahead Tina. Big hit for her. Representing Venice California well.✌
What a year is was to be dancing in clubs to this and all the other funk & groove dance music of the time. Teena was a head turner for sure and I am talking her sound.
I think this was her biggest hit. It was a crossover.
Sang that song girl, TM we miss you!
I love both her earlier music and this song. She is one of my all time favorite singers.
Another 1984'' 80s Babies Classic So many great songs were made that year🎶🎶😎😎😎
One of my absolute favorites to dance to in the clubs in the 80s!!
My favorite female singer of all time!!!
This was 84....Right after Thriller and same year as Purple Rain...I'd say this was the peak of her carreer
Definitely her highest charting pop hit (#4).
Single and album were released in '84 but both would peak in '85.
True composer of music!
Rick James would cuss y'all out saying this sounds like a Prince song🤣🤣🤣
Did Rick James write this song? LOL what was the crossover from? I'm so confused. I don't know enough about music apparently😂
@@Niecy70 Teena was a protege of Rick's and Rick couldn't stand Prince.
@@Niecy70 crossover means your music may mainly be rap, country, r&b, reggae or whatever genre and it crosses over to another chart......so the example of genres i mentioned may be an artists main genre but it crosses over to the pop charts.....Teena mainly sang funk/r&b but this paticular song crossed over to pop charts ....Teena had many hits but this was one of the very few songs that crossed over to pop for her
Teena Marie was no longer at motown when this album was released. Rick James only produced her first solo album. After that Teena wrote arranged and produced her albums without Rick James.
@@darrylmilling2747 they were still tight up until the end
She was an still is my queen
Great song, full of energy!!!
Another one of my favorite songs by Teena .This definitely takes me back to my middle school years .
Teena was the SHIT! I grew up listening to Teena Marie I’ve loved her for decades she is the legitimate shit!
They called me Lady T in high school! (Tammi) Mad love for Teena!!!
Enjoy your channel and your reactions to classic R&B that most younger people totally pass over. Great music, Great times.
She toured with Prince, Jill Jones can tell you that story. That is how Jill met Prince. Jil Jones did back up for Teena Marie
Love her music, RIP...
True legend 🖤🎶🖤🖤🖤🎶
That guitar solo is burnt in everyone's mind
She rocked it...good stuff
This was a great jam......my Grandma loved Teena Marie and was always playing her jams when we went over to her house. If you can catch it on here, there is a vid of her later in her career doing this jam at the Apollo Theatre in NYC. You have a great channel. RIP Teena Marie!!!
Loved Teena Marie. She was so talented and so pretty.❣
What you are seeing is the period when white industry was really trying to push Teena to be a pop icon like Madonna because they were amazed that this white girl could sing so soulful and thought they could put her in that pop music box.....amazingly this song crossed over to white radio.....however after Teena refused to play ball.....white radio refused to play her music but black radio and black community embraced her.....you would be shocked at how many Teena hits that you have already reacted to that white radio refused to play......also you were surprised by this uptempo Teena.....you have reacted to mainly slow jams by her....contrary to what you may have thought most of her major hits were uptempo funk songs.....great reaction
Her older stuff is amazing!
Teena Marie predates Madonna and had hits well before Madonna's debut! I would say Teena Marie paved the way for the "Material Girl"!
half of "white radio" was black people. You're just talking about mainstream top 40 radio not "white" lol 😂
It's always awesome to hear you talk about what you like or don't from a song. Wish more reactors would elaborate.
Rick James would smack you for saying it had Prince vibes. It's Rick James vibes! LOL
Remember, Rick James and Prince were mortal enemies lol and Teena was definitely down with Rick
Nah...it's def. Prince vibes. Teena even noted that in interviews. The wild part is this is her biggest hit that had nothing to do with Rick. Teena wrote and produced Lovergirl.
Actually Prince and Teena Marie have connections. He found the singer Jill Jones singing background for Teena Marie. Jill and Teena were like sisters.
You have to remember that this is in 1984. Prince & Michael Jackson were HUGE, HUGE influences on music during the era until about1988. Then music began changing quite a lot. That's why you here that Prince influence.
@Just Jammin’!!!!!!! This is always on my Playlist!!!! So talented and underrated, R🎸P “Vanilla Child”. So glad you enjoyed it!!! Haven’t read the comments. Did any one mention Lenny Kravitz sharing how Teena Marie took him in when he was a young homeless Musician???
I understood what you were saying, JJ. I used to watch this video on a show called: Night Tracks on Friday nights. I thought she was black and I was shocked to see Vanilla Child☺

Super important to note that she was not influenced by Prince. This was the vibe and look of this music genre. She was a protege of Rick James. Rick James and Prince did not get along. Teena Marie and Rick James were thick as thieves. The Prince proteges (Vanity 6, Morris Day and the Time, Appalonia, Sheila E) were not as close in style per say as you might expect. Both were great in their prospective lanes as well as their protges.
Ahhh, that intro song! Natalie Cole!
When I was a little girl I would blast this song !!!
I love this song. She might have been the first to rap.🤔😍😎
Not many people react to this song. I watch them all. Thanks! Great watching you enjoy it!
So far a lot of the songs I look up are here on this channel so of course I subscribed. Great picks 👍 I love seeing your reaction and your open mind.
This is the only song I know from Teena, but it’s amazing. This and ‘In My House’ by the Mary Jane Girls, I remember that 80’s era of that really cool funk groove. Great reaction.
Oh, please check her our. This is not even her best song. The radio didn't play her best songs. She was at her best when she did jazzy and R&B songs. Try "Tune In Tomorrow", "Casanova Brown", "Portuguese Love" and "Square Biz" for starters.
@@lb8471 oh cool. I will check her out too. Her vocals are sublime. Thank you 👍🏼
she produced this herself
🤩💖❤💖Lady T!
💃💃💃💃...one of my many hit faves of hers. Thank you J.J. Please react to two hits from her very early years 1979 & 1980 ~"I'm (just) a Sucker for Your Love" (w/Rick James on Co-lead vocals) was #8 on r&b charts, and "Behind the Groove"#4 on the club dance charts. My friends n I loved these songs back in the day. ✌🌼🌴
Phenomenal talent
Rick James was a big big influence in early career, he was probably back stage watching and directing the whole video recording 😉🤣😅😍🥰✨👍🏿👊🏿✊🏿💜💙
Actually, (fun fact) the music video was directed by actress Cicely Tyson.
@@tevinwms1104 wow I didn’t know that so cool
@@tevinwms1104 🆒!
@@tevinwms1104 I was being sarcastic 🙄 but thanks for the info👍🏿
Lady T is the real deal ! 😎💯
I might be late but check out Teena Marie "I'm a Sucker for Your Love" (1979)
Had this on vinyl!
Here's Looking At You. Teena dosen't just belt out ballads. She gets funky also.
I absolutely loved this song. It was a massive hit. Between the guitar and her huge soulful voice it sends shivers down my spine and makes me feel exhilarated. Shamefully, I'm not familiar with her other work.except her duet with Rick James called "Fire and Desire" If you haven' t reacted to it yet, you might want to. It' s pretty sexy.
:) , I think that funky bass line may be you’re thing ! It’s definitely mine !
🕺🏾🕺🏾🕺🏾
I asked you to react to this song awhile back..promising that you would not be disaponted... but I digress..
Your reaction was fun to see you enjoying her Performance 😎👍
she has a few other music videos and I would suggest A rose by another other name with Gerlad Levert
Lady T was a gifted musician as well!
She was one of Rick James ladies!
You should've watched her perform this on Soul Train, never be another Vanilla Child!!
Still funky👍🏾
You can't go wrong with a Lady T song
Funny you mentioned Prince on this . According to Teena Rick James stole one of Prince Programmed synthesizer it used it on his Street Sound Album. So you can say Prince co produced that album 😂😂
React to both songs from Soul Train, "Behind The Groove" and "I Need Your Lovin" by Teena Marie.
Not my favorite by her, although any Lady Tee is great, this is the more commercialized Tee. I would still like to see you listen to "Behind The Groove" from her funkier years.
Yeah, not my favorite, but SHE is my favorite.
I think it sounds like a prince song to well to jill Jones mia boca and baby you a trip they are good especially baby you a trip prince wrote those jill jones is tenna marie cousin he me her on the rick James tour she was one of tina marie background singer she kinda sounds like her especially in i need a man
Lady Tee🌹
This song was epic. It had it all. They thought it might open her up to a whole new and wider audience. But unfortunately she couldn't come up with anything to match this.
Teena. Invited to the BBQ for all eternity. RIH Lady T. aka "Vanilla Child"
She did some songs with Rick James!
Yup.
Prince wrote this song.
Fun fact…Teena Marie was groomed by Rick James. Rick James wasn’t too fond of Prince…thought he took some of his swag.
You getting Rick James
REACT TO SHEENA EASTON THE LOVER IN N YOU DO IT
Lady T was bad!!!
Rick James protégée.
LADY T
More like Rick James brother
Spot on. She's a product of the, Sheila E., Prince, Morris Day......
Great singer and song.
this was her biggest pop hit but in my opinion it was far, far from her best work.
Rick James production
