Revisiting 2022 in the hopes theres a 2023. Ive found ao much great music from your channel!
You've gotten me into so much amazing music. Still subbed will never unsub no matter how often you post. Thank you for these videos, there is always a couple that resonate with me and I listen for the rest of the year.
Facts, I got notifs on. Wouldn’t miss a video for the world
Don't deserve subscribers like you, you're too kind! Hope you find some new listens you enjoy :)
This channel and vsauce are still the only two channels that I have notifications switched on for 🔥
@@deepcuts the legend himself!
Same here, Oliver is the best music RUclipsr, despite posting so seldom
no matter the frequency of upload, this is still my favorite music channel
this channel is the definition of quality over quantity imo
exactly
When deep cuts drops, you drop everything else 🐐
Tis the season for me to start circling around this account like a hopeful shark again, waiting for AOTY 2023 😂
Hope you are well Oliver! I really hope you are up for sharing your favorite albums of 2023. I know you don’t post videos here often, but I hope this tradition of yours continues. For Those I Love is in regular rotation for me, and I only know about this project because of you!❤️
I am really looking forward to it too!
Come back Oliver- your people need you
BCNR's record really is something special, even for a band as talented as they are. To me, the moment I knew that record would be the aoty for me was when I listened to The Place Where He Inserted the Blade on first listen. The final chorus left me at the verge of crying. I'm glad they're still making music without Isaac, I'm glad Isaac seems to be doing fine, and I'm glad you've released a video this year, mr. Cuts! Your videos have helped me deepen my love for music and broaden my horizons. I think I'm not the only one who has a lot to thank you for. I'll definitely be checking out a couple of the records here that I haven't heard yet. Have a nice one :)
I was at Bush Hall on Friday night, my god, wait till you hear their new stuff!!! They're gonna release that concert early 2023, keep an eye out for the tall guy at the front with glasses and a quif in front of Lewis and Tyler😂
@@anthonycleary4676 is it sounding good without isaac wood?
The place where he interested the blade made me cry as well
The final minutes of “The Place Where He Inserted the Blade” are so beautiful.
That outburst of emotion from Isaac and the way those grouped vocals come together for the refrains are everything.
The Place Where He Inserted the Blade is the one I always come back to.
Hellfire has got to be my AOTY, the instrumentals are next level, the delivery is insane, it’s everything everyone loves about Black Midi to the highest degree they’ve ever produced
Fr blew every other album out the water for me
aoty no question
HELLFIRE TBE
Hellfire has no misses, such an amazing album. Definitely one of the best, if not, the best album of the 2020s so far
Sad there was no Big Thief on here. Their album this year was an absolute pinnacle of folk-rock IMO. Incredible list nonetheless!

you are the best music content creator on youtube. the amount of amazing things you've introduced me to is astounding. thank you and keep up the good work
no way he remembered he has a channel!!! love to see it
Someone reminded me just in time for AOTY
@@deepcuts good thing they did!!! i loved the Denzel curry and the chat pile
Seeing Chat Pile become somewhat of a critical darling this year is insane. I’m from the area, and I’d see them at local bar shows in the Pre-pandemic. Now I’m seeing them in February co-headline with lingua Ignota. It’s a complete surprise, but they definitely deserve it!
A happy surprise isn't it! Jealous you got to see them before they blew up
@@deepcuts they were always a cut above the rest of the local acts, if anyone was to breakthrough it should have been them!
Great list Oliver! Would really love to see more genre guides, musician guides and essentials from you. I discovered so much brilliant music from your channel that I will cherish forever. Cheers!
Absolutely some of my favourite videos of the year, I'm not super up to date with new music but always find something on here that sticks with me
Seeing that after almost a year of not posting videos, your number one pick for album of the year is Ants From Up There, the beautiful, heartwrenching, heartwarming masterpiece that had me on my knees since February, demonstrates that you are not only the best music youtuber, but also the most compatible with my tastes. You even chose Cardiacs' Sing to God as an essential, FFS!!! Thank you for coming back man. We missed you. A big hug from Argentina.
A big hug back, thank you for the support!

2023 best year for music EVER! Sooooo really hoping to see/hear/ponder on your choices
yes. even just the most obscure bands those who only have 100+ listeners on spotify have been amazing to discover. lots of talented people around
Hope all is well, Oliver! I think I respect your opinion sometimes more than my own, so I can't wait to hear what impressed you this year
That's wholesome, hope you find some things you enjoy!
Damn, I'd forgotten how enjoyable it is to listen to you talk about music. Nice to have you here again
Honestly I would appreciate you doing anything!I relistened to your back catalog while slogging through the day job and really brings me joy
great recommendations mate. Many I don't see highlighted on other end-of-year lists. Love the varied balance of sugary sweet songs and absolutely melt-your-face off heavy tunes
Gonna take that opportunity to slag you off and say justice for Big Thief!! DNWMIBIY was my personal favourite album of the year, incredibly comforting and beautiful mix of musical simplicity, lyrical complexity and warm, earnest production. Some say it’s too long but I couldn’t think of a single track I’d cut from the record, it’s just stunning from front to back.
Came to the comments to say this. It deserves a shoutout at the very least. Slag!
Yeah totally fair, I tried multiple times to connect with the new Big Thief record but never managed it. Hoping I can come back to it in the new year and see if I can find a way in
You’re one of the first people to mention Pinegrove! Love them so much and I’m happy to see them get some recognition
You always include some artist I'm not familiar with but I end up really enjoying, so I'm very excited to check this years list out! Love your channel, I'll definitely be watching whenever you have time to post again, even if it takes another year!
You got me into Swirlies! I will forever thank you for that. Amazing video, glad to see you back, even if just for a moment.
fingers crossed for more videos sooner rather than later!! your videos are fantastic and so well researched and i miss them in my feed
Thanks Peter, I’ll try my best!
Like many in your audience, you've introduce me to a wide range of superb music and artists. Thank you for sharing your love of music!
My pleasure, thanks for checking the channel out!
Somehow missed this for the first 13 days it was up... Thank god you're back!
The best youtube music criticism/recommendation channel out there, these end of year lists never fail to provide hours of amazing, enthralling and diverse music, greetings from Mexico!!!
I really love how you aren´t afraid to put away of your 20 best various of the most acclaimed albums of the year (Danger Mouse, Kendrick, Fontaines, Black Midi, etc.). That show you are talking about your absolute favorites, thanks for the video
Thank god he remembered his password
I’ve been rewatching all your videos and was just wondering where you went. Glad to see you’re back!
Always great to see you upload a video. That BC;NR album was amazing and I knew it was album of the year the instant I heard it
loved to see pinegrove on here. 11:11 isn't my favorite PG album (yet), but it has grown on me more and more since it came out and it's truly in my top personal top 10 albums of the year. Agree on the high caliber of music that came out this year, what a blessing for us!
This album has gotten so much attention as one of the best, if not the best hip hop/rap album of the year that it absolutely deserves yet I still feel that JID's "The Forever Story" is still underrated and now with the extended version with 2007 as an added track that should have always been there as an ending track, itreally solidified my thoughts on this album. Front to back the album just oozes polish and most importantly shows so much maturity and passion from JID himself. The tracklist has major variety as well with Raydar, Dance now, Can't punk me, Bruddanem, Can't make you change, Just in time being tracks that show the fun and bumpy side of the album and then you have Crack sandwich, Kody blu 31, Sistanem, Stars, Money, Lauder too and 2007 showing the reflective and story driven side of the album. On that note, I love how JID delves deeper within his own story as a person especially his relationship with his family which ties into the major theme of the album being the things that remain remembered forever. No wonder for me the how 2 of the 3 of my favourite song of the album which are Kody blu 31, Stars and 2007 are heavily about his family and his own story. In conclusion I fucking love this album.
Always great to hear from ya. Still hyped for the NIN guide, if that’s still in the works
Always appreciate a deep cuts upload, nice to see you again!
I really am glad someone gave love to Ithaca’s They Fear Us! It’s a great listen!
man idc if you only end up having time for one upload year, there's really nothing that gets you excited like a new Deep Cuts video
very surprised to see Daniel Avery up that high! thought that project was quite nice (slight shame to not see Kelly Lee Owens' last record show up here but oh well). also really need to hear that Caterina Barbieri thing, I almost added that one to one of my roundups, ran out of room for it & forgot about it, but I'll definitely have to check it out after seeing this
Aw you're too kind Tommy, thanks for watching as always!
Hope you enjoy Caterina Barbieri's when you check it out, it quickly became something quite special to me
So glad you're back. You always show me so much new music. Loved Motomami and I'm glad you included it
I took part in a few of your live album listening parties on Discord. It was a really cool experience, it was nice to be a part of something live with other people, especially during the lockdown. Thank you for arranging them!
Ants from up there absolutely captured me this year. Despite coming out all the way in February, I find myself continuously coming back to the intensely powerful lyricism of Isaac Wood and incredible music from the back. Their ability to perfect crescendo certain records reminds me of prime GYBE. I love them, I love this record, I love that you also appreciate their work
Lol wow, I just found your channel yesterday and I was wondering if you would upload again this year. Glad I subscribed so I could catch this upload!
Lucky break! Thanks for joining the community!
Deep cuts has been so important for my musical exploration over the year, many thanks for the outstanding work over the years Oliver ❤
So glad to see Pinegrove get some recognition! Haven't seen it on many year-end lists but it was one of my most played albums early in the year. Surprised Big Thief's Dragon New Warm Mountain wasn't mentioned but great list as always! It's a good day when there's a new deep cuts video.
pretty solid list! as always
Denzel, Hatchie and Chat Pile are on my list too
Solid records!

@@silver.s516 well yeah but then why does the list even matter? aren't the opinions what make this specific top 20 list worth a watch?
@@adisoncardoso Maybe watch the video before scrolling down to read the comments
You nailed this list. I was skeptical several times, having already found so many albums I loved in 2022. But you gave me a lot to rethink and new albums to listen to. Now that I’ve made it through the list, I’m blown away. So glad you’re back!!!
So good to see you again thanks for a couple albums I had missed this year
So happy to see that White Ward made the list this year. Such an underrated record! Another great metal release on my list would be Imperial Triumphant's latest
Happy to see Ultra Truth as your #2. Personally my album of the year & I think it's Daniels best effort. It's such a beautiful record & constantly on rotation for me.
Glad to see a new upload here. Boards of Canada guide and or the NIN one would be sick :)
I love your Videos. Got me into so many great artists and Genres. I often watch your videos to get out of my musical Bubble and it almost always pays off!
I love the mention of SIMZ, absolutely agree that this record exceeds the previous in terms of quality! But I was left wondering... Where is billy woods??? His record was so incredible to me, I honestly expected you to talk about it! Thought it was right up your alley. But anyways great video as always, this is the year-end list i've been waiting for most!
A really good record but personally it didn't land as much as the records I listed + the honourable mentions. Testament to quite how great this year has been for music!
The new Alvvays album blue rev made a nice listen, the band never tries anything to pretentious but manages to incorporate a nice balance of depth and catchyness which gets you hooked. Also one of those tweed indie albums that makes you reminisce of adolescent summer nights
Great stuff! Going to dive into your playlist over next week!
Always appreciate your in-depth take on a WIDE variety of genres. Thank you for sharing your passion with us all 🖤
One of my favorite underrated album's of the year is Janky Star by Grace Ives. I saw it got some love on pitchfork actually but no one else seems to be talking about it. I've been a huge Grace Ives fan since her first EP, and I think her sound just continues to evolve and refine itself, there's no one quite like her in music rn!
aethiopes really solidified billy woods as the best underground rapper currently active for me, he really just does not miss
It's Ka for me, with woods at a close second.
@@ninjasrose1653 dont forget about Jay Electronica
@@MrJcalvino He's a great Emcee, but hasn't done enough decent work imo. He has so much potential, but wastes it. The last two projects were very lack lustre for me.
My favorite artist in the underground scene is Aesop Rock. I've noticed he's pretty overlooked nowadays, his most recent single with Lupe Fiasco is killer
This has been said to death about various other artists but listening to Aethiopes is just like watching a movie, for me. woods is a top tier storyteller and the instrumentals help paint the picture so much more vividly. Asylum puts me in the headspace like I'm in an early 20th century bar listening to the blues, No Hard Feelings sounds like a rocket ship taking off with those blaring horns, and Smith + Cross feels like the burning of some big monument. What a lovely record, man
thanks so much for the videos, love to see 'em no matter how spread apart their releases are!
I clicked on this today hoping that you would do a year end video, but I wasn't sure since you don't post anymore... So damn happy you did it!
always happy to see a deep cuts upload!! no worries about the sparse content, we take whatever you can get the time to release. I haven’t listened to much music this year, but Ashenspire’s Hostile Architecture and Ada Rook’s UGLY DEATH NO REDEMPTION ANGEL CURSE I LOVE YOU are my two tops, i can’t pick between them. see you in the new year oliver!!
Love to see the Little Simz record included in these lists even after being released so late. Incredible album imo that's only getting better on multiple listens
I'm very glad you're back, every now and then I keep checking the channel even if I get notified, worth the wait
i love seeing your videos pop up!!!!!!!!! thank you so much. deep cuts forever
I'm pleasantly surprised to Ants From Up There at #1 but it makes perfect sense. That album got me through one of the darkest periods of grief I had after losing a very close family member to suicide. A lot of Isaac's lyrics hit me in a way that just felt extremely poignant and bittersweet. I guess that's why that album is so damn special for me. There's a raw beauty to it that feels very relatable, heartbreaking, and nuanced in a way few albums are able to convey.
PS:Can't believe Big Thief's album didn't even get a mention. Also "And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow" and "Ugly Season" definitely deserved to be in the top 20.
Sorry to hear you've had such a tough year, I'm glad the record was able to help you get through it. Art can be a great healer can't it
Thankfully with this latest release Jockstraps have been receiving their well deserved flowers.
Personally, my fav album of the year has to be Charlotte Adigéry & Bolis Pupul's Tropical Dancer. The blend of groovy beats with poignant social commentary is done in an almost laid back and entertaining way that left be awestruck... while at the same time bobbing to the sound of the beats
Yes!! Tropical dancer is my favorite of the year as well. Kept coming back to it throughout the months. Freshest thing I heard in 2022
I've saved the record to listen to when I get a spare minute, appreciate the recc!
Glad to see you back in here. Have a great holiday season to you too, greetings from Mexico.
thank you for still posting, love you forever for introducing me to so much music that i love
I loved Ultra Truth, "Only" might be the best song of the year for me. But I have to say, my favourite album of the year so far is Mamaleek's Diner Coffee. Really amazing and powerful stuff, hugely recommended if you like weird metal adjacent stuff. Stoked to check out some of these artists, thank you!
Diner Coffee sounds cool, I'll check it out!
I think all my favourite albums are mentioned in this video except for Beyoncé, The Smile, Alvvays and Big Thief. I would love to hear your thoughts on all of those albums of course, but since the Big Thief one is my #1 of the year and is probably the biggest album (within your music sphere at least) that's missing from the video, I would mostly love to hear your thoughts on that one!
Also, I believe I've been following you're channel since you've uploaded you're very first video, and I just wanted to say that I hope you don't feel any pressure to upload frequently! I would watch every video you upload regardless of how long it's been since your last video and the algorithm seems to know that since it immediately recommended this video!
Deep Cuts and The Wonky Angle end of year reviews have become a shopping list for me. Thanks Oliver.
I remember watching the last video you made within the hour, not quite as fast this time to watch this upload but happy to be here
hellfire in the honourable mentions after cavalcade ranked so high last year, this’ll be a great video lol
Yea I'm impressed he literally listed almost my top 10 in the honorable mentions
Love everything about Ants from Up Here, but the lyrics have to be the best. The vulnerability, the inability to make sense, the constant injokes ("references, references"), but especially this constant desire to do better despite all the anxiety and hardship people have to deal with. It has so much to say about this moment in history without saying anything at all, but showing the symptoms instead. Glad to hear others had as deep a reaction to this record as I did.
My favorite lyric from the whole album, as inconsequential as it first seems:
« and I havent felt this way in, like, forever
I am the convo, you are the weather. »
Interesting pick for the lyric, reckon you could elaborate?
good to see you again:) great list, and i'm pleased to see ultra truth getting some much deserved love
Was just on your channel a few days ago rewatching some of your old videos and now here you are with a best of 2022 list 😃
Hostile Architecture is my aoty! I think it’s a 10/10. Gotta check out the White Ward and Conjurer albums. It’s amazing how much music I listen to and yet I miss so much!
I love the Hatchie placement on here! "GIving the World Away" and Hatchie in general have been completely snubbed from publications galore. Her music is incredible and deserves any love it gets!
fr she is the chorus queen. I saw her live in montréal in may and loved it
So glad you mentioned the Sam Gendel album, I saw little to no discussion about it online and I thought it was such a beautiful record it deserved a shoutout. Great list!
Been here since you had like 20k subs if I remember correctly, and will not leave anytime soon! Thank you for all the recommendations over the years. It is amazing how many albums I eventually end up loving just goes over my head until this type of videos.
We need that 2023
ants from up there is so emotionally intense for me. really good picks here
I just freaking love your videos.
Really great to see you back, I've been looking forward to your AOTY for this year! Sad to see Big Thief wasn't mentioned tho but on the other hand I'm glad to have been introduced to other releases, it's refreshing not only seeing the most acclaimed ones being put to the front!
Funnily enough because it was such an obvious pick I didn't expect the band who placed number 1 to clinch it. Its a testament to your variety that I was surprised you didn't surprise me you know? Great pick.
I was wondering what people would think of the #1 pick, glad I was able to surprise/not surprise you!
@deepcuts I think people who have it in their top 20 either have it towards the bottom or number 1, it's a very easy to enjoy record that you can really develop a deep fanaticism for
@deepcuts also would love some opinion pieces, you're an amazing writer and the guides don't always show that whereas your pieces are way more interesting to me at least
Where’s the 2023 editiooon? 😢😊
So so so glad to see you back, Oliver. This is the AOTY list I've been waiting for the most and I'm so glad Ants topped it because I couldn't agree more
Discovered some great projects in music that left their mark on my life thanks to you
Here are some albums that arent on your list that i think were criminally overlooked this year, ranked from most to ''least'' favorite, if anything here looks atleast somewhat interesting to anyone i highly recommend giving the album a chance, theres some true gems here imo!!
ooodisea - O' dimness SOUL HOME, 40 Watt Sun - Perfect Light, Cities Aviv - MAN PLAYS THE HORN, Binker and Moses - Feeding the Machine, Alabaster DePlume - GOLD, Nicolás y Los Fumadores - Dios y La Mata de Lulo?, Afrodelic - Dusunkun Hakili, Messa - Close, Grace Ives - Janky Star, UMI - Forest in the City.
Nice to see these two new Red Hot Chili Peppers records on nr.1 and nr. 2 spots. Great picks Oliver!
What can I say, gotta give them the credit where it’s due!
Please go do that on Fantano’s channel. This man deserves better.
@@kalobadams7803 I love Oliver's work. Great list as always! :)
I’m just kidding haha. No worries.
