Guys maybe just discuss this 47 minute long amazing guide someone has put hours and hours of work in, instead of ignoring it and just requesting the stuff you want to see. Cheers
Bjork is a DaVinci of her time. A true artist. Years from now, people will look at her work, and talk about her like we did DaVinchi. So unbelievably underappreciated. A true innovator of not just music, not just art, but self expression. Thank you Bjork
Björk was once described to be not as being ahead of her time, but being from a different timeline entirely. I adore her and her music and she has easily one of the most captivating discographies of any artist in history.
I know this guide is a few years old, but I'm genuinely enjoying it this evening. Last summer, after appreciating Bjørk from afar for years, I suddenly became a super fan. I bought most of her catalog and took it with me on a week-long camping trip. Listening while driving down lonely forested two-tracks in Michigan was the perfect way to immerse in her work.
A side note: Bjork wore the swan dress to the Academy Awards (the Oscars) when she was nominated for best song. I think that is why it got such a huge reaction out of the media: because the academy awards are so revered.
I'm so glad that you're showing biophilia some love! It might actually be my favorite björk record alongside vespertine. They both give me that warm, peaceful feeling. I especially love the slower tracks like moon and cosmogony!
Thunderbolt Biophilia is a fantastic album. Sure it's a bit more experimental and takes a couple of listens to fully digest but it's worth it. It was brilliantly crafted and had such an interestingly unique soundscape. I love the slower cuts as well. Virus is one of my favourite songs.
I totally agree with you! Biophillia and Vespertine are my favourites and now Utopia with them. she makes delicate sounds feel so powerful with raw emotion whilst still having an ethereal tone. just mesmerizing
Brilliant video. Björk is one of my favourite artists and to hear you describe her music with such eloquence and precision makes me very happy. I admire how fiercely she sticks to her creative vision and doesn't conform to what the masses think she should do. I hope you can do a video for Kate Bush soon. Cheers.
The only two Björk albums I've really listened to are Homogenic and Medulla, and I was so goddamn floored by them that I haven't explored her other work yet. So I really appreciate this clear, well-thought-out talk about her albums and their context in her discography and life.
There's no one in the history of contemporary music who has made the music she has, she's light years ahead of everyone with that superlative voice, that amazing depth and range in music, and the ability and sensitivity to bring it all into any form of music she chooses...even a pop song.
We will be doing a listening party for the new Björk Utopia record on Friday 24th @ 06:00 GMT, and one for her second record Post on Tuesday 21st @ 22:00 GMT. Invite link - discord.gg/JPUaAmG Also it's Björk week on the Discord, come join to chat about this amazing artist!
deep cuts so, what is your take on Utopia? What do you think so far? (also great video and really good insights; been listening to Björk myself since her Sugarcubes era and saw her live 1st time for the 'Stick Around For Joy' tour)
Your guides on Swans and Radiohead were amazing. I’ve never really listened to Bjork but your guide has convinced me to check out her stuff. Thanks for the best music related content on youtube.
I enjoy it too. It is not a bad album but kinda weak for björk's standards. I'd dare to say Volta (björk's weakest, least consistent album) is better than some artist's bests.
While listening to All Neon Like, imagine the figure on the cover art moving, she does, she walks towArds you fixed in the same spot. Maybe i was high. Maybe i wasn't. but i know what i saw
LOVE this channel to death dude, you deserve more subs. these guides are my absolute favorite, cant wait for that autechre guide you hinted at a bit back!
Oliver, thanks so much for this. I dropped everything I was doing as soon as I saw the video was up. I admire all your detailed hommages to all of the artists that you've made guides to. I am so thankful for this.
Really good job, some great choice of descriptive words too. Nice that you mentioned Tanya Tagaq, I saw her live in 2013 with a violinist, it was one of the most incredible live performances I've ever seen. By the way, it's stalactites that drip...
Im 55 and have not listened or were interested in Bjork over the years .Out of interest, i put Bjork orchestral live on utube within 2 mins. i was crying my eyes out .I guess you have to get to an age to appreciate genius .Bjork has a new fan .
These guide videos are great. So far I love the artists you picked. And even if I known them all pretty well, you still shine a light on some aspect that was unknown to me. So thanks for that and hopefully we can see many more of them :)
Hyperballad is the most unique love song ever, I can't think of any other artist that has tackled it from that angle, and love song lyrics are typically tired out.
Listening to the description you make of some songs I just felt tears coming, because it was perfectly what I felt listening to them I think that's a proof of how her songs are strong in universal, honest, beautiful emotions. Her words, these sounds, I can't get bored of them, and I sometimes do get the feeling that listening to Björk is like having a real connection with nature, love, universe, transcendance. It may seem ridiculous, but this feelings are not far from being religious Hyperbolic (but sincere)
Oliver, thanks a ton for making such high quality guides to music artists. Can you also make a list of albums that would get you into experimental/art rock genre? I would highly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
I really enjoyed listening to you. I've followed Bjork since Debut, and it's been an amazing journey. A new album from Bjork is always a big event for me. Great stuff!
Absolutely wonderful guide to Bjork! I've been a Bjork fan since Homogenic was released (I was 11-years-old at the time) and it was absolutely wonderful to re-live all of the key Bjork moments that you talked about in this video. Bjork's catalogue has definitely been one of the most fun sinking my teeth into out of any other artist. There is also much that I have not yet discovered. Mostly from Volta and onwards. After listening to Volta and going to a concert from her Volta tour, that was kind of my pinnacle moment and I drifted to other artists from there. After your video, I feel like I kind of owe it to her to listen to the stuff that came afterwards. I discovered you from your Progressive rock videos and spotted this Bjork video. I must say that I agree that Homogenic is a near-perfect masterpiece. There are SO MANY albums that I could say are my favorite, but Homogenic is perhaps my favorite-favorite. PERHAPS. :]
I'm desperately in love with Biophilia. I want to live inside "Virus". "My sweet adversary..." One of my all time favorite tracks. I also love it's connection with science, and how the songs were used for apps to help kids in Iceland learn about different processes in nature.
Possibly a Guide to some jazz musicians? Davis, Coltrane, Coleman, Mingus, etc. The works of Omar Rodriguez-Lopez would be a dream come true for a Guide, though I wouldn’t blame you for not wanting to cause there’s SO MUCH In any event, great video as always!
Thank you for making this! Venus As A Boy and Jóga are the songs that got me into Björk but her discography is so dense (and occasionally a little esoteric), I'm really grateful you've provided a means to digest it all a little more easily. Alsoooo, I'm really hoping you follow through on the Guide to Steve Albini!
I had the pleasure of getting to see her MOMA exhibition in 2015 and got to experience the full 360 degree immersive video of Black Lake. Absolutely devastating and beautiful. She is singularly amazing.
Wow, I really enjoy listening to this Review. What an elaborate and in-depth Video. Listening to someone acknowledging the Beauty of Björk and her music makes me happy.
Thank so much for this! I only ever knew her radio hits but after I saw her live in 2015, my heart was stolen and my creative soul was fired. Slowly working through the albums. 🌈🙌
This master of sonic poetry is my humble queen. Her vocal explosions have always inspired me. When I play it for family and friends I get a mixed bag. You either muh it’s cool or omg turn it off is she even trying. For this I express my love for her music loudly. My interpretation of her discography mirrors this young man’s who’s awesome detailed and loving breakdown was what I was looking for.I remember watching immortal beloved moving staring my dude Gary “EVERYONE!” Oldman playing one of my favorite classical composers Ludwig Van Beethoven. I was transfixed by this movie a man who by the time he was middle aged had his heart so shattered that his attitude towards life was foul. He had come through abuse and going deaf to create the most boldly powerful music ever heard. Deaf the man was deaf and made music….deaf. So he bemoans to Schroeder: Music is a dreadful thing I can’t hear what is music for To exalt the soul. No dude no Lil dude. LVB’s answer is why I even listen to Bjork Or Madvillian or Slayer or Katy Perry… “If you hear a marching band, is your soul exalted? No, you march. If you hear a waltz, you dance. If you hear a mass, you take communion. It is the power of music to carry one directly into the mental state of the composer. The listener has no choice. It is like hypnotism.” This is music and to be taken into this woman most intimate and secret places where we share and love and hope. Is unbelievably spiritual and beautiful. I was looking to see if Bjork was still relevant still heard loved her influence is heard everywhere still all these years later. i tried to get into bjork before and i really wanted to like her music but sadly i just couldnt get into it, but the same goes for alot of my favorite musicians so im glad you made this im definitely going to have another go!
The goosebumps I was getting throughout this near 50 minutes...! Thank you. You broke my heart and healed it at the same time. I am still not fully recovered from Bjork's O2 Arena concerts and it was a year ago, which was the very first one for me, and probably the last. Weird, since I am such a big fan, but had no means before to afford such things before. I am in a literal love with her since 1993, only using this expression because I have no other , better word to describe it. I could have listened to you for hours. It's a rare gem to stumble upon another Earthling who acknowledges Her fully and loves and enjoys Her work just as wholeheartedly as I do. Thank you!
I will be happy to watch some guides to Mike Patton, Justin Broadrick and James Plotkin. At least, one of them... May be John Zorn and Bill Laswell also. ohhh... So many interesting musicians to make guide to// You have amazing channel. Hello from Russia!
Fabulous genuine work, as always. Greatly appreciated! If any suggestion for further dwelling is allowed I would adore shows on enigmatic female performers and vocalists like Camila Moreno, Jenny Hval, Rykarda Parasol, Jessica Sligter, Anna von Hausswolff, Tess Parks, Peaches, Dead can Dance, Cranes, Nico, Lou Rhodes, Stina Nordenstam, Blonde Redhead, Chastity Belt, Carla dal Forno, Emma Ruth Rundle, King Woman, Violeta Parra, Grouper, Slowdive, True Widow, Low, Circuit des Yeux, Nina Simone, Jess Williamson, Beth Gibbons, Lingua Ignota, Diamanda Galas, Jarboe, The Dead Weather, Jackie Lynn, Haley Fohr, Rockettothesky, Martina Topley-Bird, 55 Cancri é, Vashti Bunyan and the like. Thanx a bunch for a great show!
I'm so incredibly late to this guide, but how happy I am that it has crossed paths with me now. Thank you for this beautifully thoughtful, so thoughtful, telling of one of the world's greatest talents.
She is one of my favorite artists, and one of my favorite humans, of all time. Thanks for this awesome guide and for showing me things about her that make me love her even more.
Biophilia has a very special place in my heart, being the first release i fully got to experience the lead up and release. I was introduced to Bjork via the remix of Army Of Me used in the film Sucker Punch. After seeing how much I liked the song, my mother pushed me to pick up her Greatest Hits album at a used record store. the rest is history!
Bjork is my spirit animal :) Your 'A Guide to Bjork' is phenomenal. You understand music and you giving some amazing insight to her music, Absolutely deserve my subscription :)
Became interested in Björk by way of Medula but it was primarily through Volta that I really became a fan of her work as a whole, so those two albums for me are my favourites, but I get why people really rate Post, Homogenic and Vespertine as some of her best work.
Thanks for this. I consider Björk as like the mascot of my most authentic self, but because of a bad patch years after Volta I haven’t really listened to much of her new music. I’ll give it a spin now because you did such a wonderful job detailing it and filling in the gaps!
Hey I love these guides you make. They are absolutely extensive, detailed and you have the knack of articulating what you really think which I absolutely admire. Thanks a lot for these kind of videos. I also realized most of these artists that you choose for these videos either have a long career or a diverse/stellar career breaking all boundaries (I wouldn't see you doing this kind of video for acdc cause of not being the most diverse band haha). If that's the case, I would love to see one of these videos for a band like opeth cause of the sheer boundary breaking and diversity those dudes pull off. Thanks again for these videos. Love it
I just subscribed to you. Because, as a Bjork fan, yes, you touched on the things that get to my heart in her music. Thank you. :) Now off to check on your other reviews. ps. you sure have a wonderfully literate expression. It's hard to 'talk' about music, but you nailed it here.
omg it's finally done! Thanks! Have been listening to Homogenic on repeat for the last month or so - it just does not let go! If only there was a chance for a Sigur Rós guide.. I'm ready to wait for years just being sure one day it would be a thing.
it would be cool to have some of the music playing throughout the video as examples of what you're talking about-some animations or clips would be cool too

From a really huge bjork fan. Thank you for not making this video 10 minutes long. She is such an artist to talk about
This video had me open up so many tabs to check out later. From lyrics, blog articles, songs and album art. Thank you Beloved
I love Björk so much. I walked down the aisle to Frosti at my wedding. It sounded awesome in the teeny chapel I got married in. Great guide!!
Also, can you do more discography guides on female artists? I’d love to see who else you’d pick!

I loved björk before watching this but I can appreciate her album's so much more after finding out so many more details from this video.
Thanks for that Oliver!! Very inspiring to know more about Björk's career, especially since I am still discovering her work.
Thank You! I find Björk so fascinating and cosmically beautiful. Definitely a once in a lifetime artist!!
Bjork is my spirit animal :) Your 'A Guide to Bjork' is phenomenal. You understand music and you giving some amazing insight to her music, Absolutely deserve my subscription :)
I've been trying to finally get into Bjork and this is exactly what I needed! Thanks man for making all these vids!
you're welcome mate, thanks for watching!
Guide to Frank Zappa? Would kill someone to see that.
Kill one person for every album.
Dunno if you guys dig podcasts, but if you check out Discography`s first season! Goes through all the official albums
He did a Miles Davis guide, it's almost there.
Became interested in Björk by way of Medula but it was primarily through Volta that I really became a fan of her work as a whole, so those two albums for me are my favourites, but I get why people really rate Post, Homogenic and Vespertine as some of her best work.
This was wonderful, thanks for making it! I really like the way you approached Björk's work.
I adore Volta. The sound on the second half of the record really hits me.
Very very well done sir!!...I pretty much agree with u on everything u have stated. Favorite artist of all time!
I've bee pondering about diving into Björk but don't know where to start, so thank you for this!
CheesecakeLasagna enjoy, brotendo! I remember the first time I dove into Björk. Crazy stuff, I love it
This is the best guide to Bjork I've heard- Nice one!
Love it
Please, some day, A Guide to Tom Waits
Well
Yo I gotta say, her "Your Kiss is Sweet" from that young first album is absolutely precious!
good job man, her discography is intense, but soooo creative and complex. can't wait to see you talking about utopia :)
Great intro to Bjørk, thanks! Long time fan here.
Thank you so much for saying he name right! I'm constantly having to explain it to people.
it would be cool to have some of the music playing throughout the video as examples of what you're talking about-some animations or clips would be cool too
