As a CST and a Surgical Tech instructor this saddens me. I try my hardest to make sure that I am doing my best to teach my students and to be there for them during their clinical rotations, I also make sure that they know that I will have their back and fight their battles for them if they have issues at a clinical site.
I’m sorry for you’re bad experience and I wish you the best in the future
Thank you so much and it’s amazing to hear what you do and how serious you take your role as an instructor . Your students are definitely lucky to have you !
Do you offer tutoring?

Can I do surgical tech online but do clinical in person
@@marcheloftis39 Preppy offers online surg tech program around 1600
Just graduated and I’ve interned for 8 months at my hospital and joined Cardio surgery team. Every OR I was in and every hospital they will act like you are dumb. You have to earn height and earn respect. It’s given over time once they trust you to set up and everything else. The OR is not a friendly place though by no means.
Hello good 👍🏾 for you!! How were you able to intern?
@@candacebrinker8371 we had an internship through our hospital I live in Mississippi. So it’s a level 2 trauma facility but we do the most heart surgery’s in the state. We also have every specialty except transplant and peds so I thought it was a great place to start until I got enough experience to travel.
Cardiac❤ is my dreammm specialty I want to get into ik I have to have experience once graduating as a CST. Was it super hard to get into?
I worry too about how mean I hear most surgeons are (in any specialty), the drama and gossip between other staff, the lack of respect for STs, etc. I won't let it hold me back but I also won't allow ANYONE to treat me like shit. I don't get why everyone can't show kindness and compassion, we all have to start somewhere even the cocky surgeons.
@@candacebrinker8371 we had internships through our hospital
@@Ashley-og9tiit wasn’t too hard to get into. However, it is very very challenging speciality wise compared to anything else. Now being on the team for 9 months, passing a CABG and going on bypass is alot of fun. It’s incredibly stressful all the time and when you get called in someone is dying so it’s a lot of thinking on your toes. I love it though and wouldn’t have changed anything.
Something similar happened to me as a new EMT. I was the only Black woman there and was treated horribly by medics. Ignored, cursed out. It was bad. I left and now I’m in school for surg tech and a little nervous for clinicals.: I hate how people sit on their high horses like they weren’t a beginner before. Everybody has to start somewhere so I never understood the ego trip and the nasty attitudes for newcomers. I will never be that way no matter how high I climb.
Yes and I’m so sorry you experienced that. I wish you the best of luck with everything !!
🥹 beautifully said🤍
lol medics treat everyone horrible if you are new...black white yellow...dont matter..there is a crap ton of ego in all science based fields..I experienced it in pharma industry and hospital settings..its all ego driven individuals..law of the jungle
I'm now about to start surgical tech
I used to be an Endoscopy Technician. When I read the title of your video I already knew what the reason was going to be before you said it. I remember my very first day on the job one of the surgeons yelled at me to get the F out of the procedure room because I didn't "know wtf I was doing" the very first time my trainer had me handle the endoscope. This was literally like the first hour of my first day on the job.
That’s crazy. I’m so sorry that , that was your experience. It’s crazy to me that people try to tell you what you do and don’t know. I’m just as qualified as you and I learned what I needed to, to even be in this position right now.
Did you leave bc of the environment and/or people? Do you mind what field you are in now?
@@Ashley-og9ti the RNs, techs, assistants, and clerical staff were all great to work with and I hated leaving them. I only left because of the treatment by the doctors and surgeons. We worked with between 20 to 25 of them and only about 3 of them treated staff with any type of respect. I went from that job into a hospital security supervisor role that I was in for about 10 years. I decided I needed to get away from the healthcare environment completely for a while, so I went to work for Amazon. I'm currently studying to take the Sterile Processing exam though because that was the only part of being an Endoscopy Technician that I enjoyed, the actual cleaning and maintenance of the equipment and I do miss working in the hospital.
@SnackyHey oh wow! Happy and proud of you for doing what was best for YOU I feel like with anything, including careers for some, you gotta experiment, see where you feel most content.
I'm in my surg tech program now and honestly that has been one of my worries since hearing SO much about how mean and belittling the surgeons can be😑 I have tough skin, but at the same time a bit sensitive and regardless I can't and won't put up with blatant disrespect, I don't think anyone should. It's aggravating bc seasoned professionals tend to forget they were students and new staff at one point too, even surgeons!!
I'm actually looking into getting dual certified while in school for CST, also working on clocking the 400hrs for CRCST! Is there another cert for endoscopy or its with the general sterile processing credentials? If you have any advice and/or study tips for the test please lmk! 🤍
They are jealous, they don’t want us in those types of positions, because they know we will get together and open a hospital, never let anyone detour you from your educational goals.
Who are "they"?
@tigerdelgado you are delusional, lol we will never open hospitals because we blacks can never unite period.......so you coming on talking about " they" 😂😂
@@gusdad4811you know exactly who they are
I'm a CST myself and currently a nursing student. I’m sorry this experience made you leave the program. Many surgeons can be rude, ignorant, and classist. Some really get off on putting others down, especially surgical tech students. It doesn’t help that everyone is in their ass all of the time. Everything you’re saying I can relate to. I graduated in 2018 and many of us hated clinical It was dreadful many quit. ST preceptors can be nasty the OR nurses can be nasty Everyone forgets that they were once students too and didn’t know much. Sometimes people can feel some type of way especially if there’s a high turnover rate. I realized I didn’t like it during clinical too it’s not at all what I thought. but stuck it out graduated and got certified because I was already so invested. I worked in sterile for a few years but ultimately decided I was going to be an RN and get away from the OR altogether. It also sounds like this clinical site is highly unprofessional especially when it comes to students. I would report them to the school and tell them about your experience. But you have to do what’s best for you in the end. Best of Luck :)
Also the pay is not where it should be for the amount of work you are doing at these hospitals. Many are short staffed since Covid and you have to pick up the slack. Unless you’re traveling or scrubbing in orthro ,neuro, or cardio cases and getting overtime and a lot of call you’re not seeing the good money
Girl exactly!! But I’m so glad you’re doing something else and I hope you enjoy it more !! Also the best of luck to you as well
Can we curse them out? Like in all seriousness, I don’t do well with disrespect often. I will kindly put them in their place.
Yes always advocate for yourself. Try to be professional of course if you can. But don't let nobody disrespect you.@@commercebacon

I've realized over the years that there are a lot of horrible personalities in healthcare. It's astonishing. And what bothers me is that you actually have people championing nastiness as some kind of rite of passage...."get thick skin"...."we eat our young"...."keep your head down"...."stop being sensitive"...."their job is stressful"....."just let it go"....wtf???! Also, with all of the shortages going on, why would you intentionally try to make students/new colleagues miserable? Ughh. I'm sorry that you had to go through that.
I agree 100 percent
I'm ready for them. I'm not in the room with them. They're in the room with me 😤💰💸🙏🏽
People like that are why i left the medical field. It sucks, but its true. I think about going back once in a blue moon because i find it so fasinating and the money is great, but stories like this remind me of my own experiences. I will never go back.
Do you mind sharing what you did in the medical field ? I’m sorry that you had to deal with rude people
I’m trying to leave the medical field, can I ask what you do now?
your a very bright girl, I understand your reasoning, Its like is this really worth it being around these bad energies for how ever many amount of years along with the stress of the job itself. crazy
I’m sorry you had a bad experience! I probably would have asked to be switched locations, there are really good places and people out there. Glad you listened to your instincts though
I was in the surgical tech program, but was let go from it. I had a toxic experience and didn’t get the proper treatment and training. I don’t want to give up on my dream. The program I was in was
through
the hospital I worked at. I passed my two required online classes but I didn’t make through clinicals. I was so close to graduating 😢. I now
have to go through another program. Hopefully it will work out for me.🎉
Do you mind sharing why you got kicked out the program so maybe someone else would try not to make the same mistake?
everything happens for a reason
@@dpaper7962 I made a mistake with a specimen. Always pay attention to what the surgeon hands you.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience as I'm going through this. It feels good knowing that I'm not alone 😊 But know that you got this. Hope you doing better 🙏
@@dpaper7962 probably the experience she described..sometimes you can't hold everything back and you blow up and if you are the low man or woman on the totem pole you'll be the one penalized..people are only human and can take so much..i had a situation in the pharma indudstry years ago and I quit didn't even give notice..rolled out on the spot which I would never do but that environment was so toxic with certain personalities I was forced to exit stage right..
the situation with the dr. is INSANE!
That sucks. We have surgical tech students at my work and all my coworkers treat them awesome and all the surgeons teach them so much. Personally I’m a nurse who went straight to the OR, I’m learning to scrub on the job and it is hard, but my coworkers have been helping me a lot and the surgeons have been patient with me. I feel like this experience isn’t the norm, but I hear horror stories, so maybe I just work in a good OR.
I’m so sorry you had to go through that! You’re so beautiful and intelligent and I’m looking forward to your notes! ❤
I know exactly how she feels because I’ve been treated the same way & even worse!!❤
So sad. I'm 59 and am considering going to surg tech school because I need a career change into something that allows me to help people instead of busting my hump on meaningless work for tech bros all looking to get rich. I wonder if that surgeon's attitude was a racial thing. He sounds like a true jerk. I'm watching all the videos I can and have talked with a tech. Everyone mentions the god complex that some surgeons have. I have thick skin, but if that's the majority of what I'm going to encounter, no thanks. Been there done that in corporate America. If discrimination is rampant, then I question how people would react to my advanced age, even though I'm in just as good shape as people decades younger.
Good for you for standing up for yourself and cutting your losses even thought you have everything it takes to be successful. I agree: when you know, you know that something isn't right and that there's no need to make yourself miserable trying to force a fit.
So happy I came to your page, I live in Dallas & decided to do research before I go into the program. Sad to see, 4 years later the same exact “high horse” is still being rode on.
Thank you for the info & I hate he made you feel that way. I’m older but I am about to pursue a career change from medical assistant to surgical tech! I look forward to more videos/info and the ebook! #newsubbie
Have you ever considered nursing?
I just signed up for the ebook I can’t waitttt
CST for 8 years (almost 9 now) and soon to be CSFA here. I hate so much that you had such a bad experience with clinicals. The clinical coordinator/charge nurse (whoever is in charge of the schedule) needs to not assign ST students to that surgeon's cases if he's going to be a douche wagon about it. You just got screwed that day. I had a few tough surgeons and preceptors when I was in clinicals and I just wanted it to be over. In any case, I am glad you found what you truly want to do. Working in healthcare is a mess anyway.
I got through my first 10 weeks of clinical my second time around. The dean allowed me to come back no charge the next fall because he knew his teachers were sorry. Then the lies started. It was retaliation but this time he was on board. Now some hospitals are doing on- the-job training like they are doing with Sterile Processing. They are giving you 12 month to get licensed after being hired. I volunteered in L&D and NICU for four years. My goal is still L&D. I will suceed.
Listening to that pissed me off, lmao. PHEW. Definitely would've "respectfully" called out his toxic behavior.
Not going to lie I would've sat him straight in a professional manner, left and sued the hospital for emotional distress.
She went to check out the field and see if she wanted to pursue medicine. She did the research and decided it wasn't for her. Good job. You have to try it out. Definitely a sacrifice.
Thank you for this video, I’m on edge about doing this or not. But towards the end of your video about how people didn’t treat you with respect and OF COURSE you are new and your not gonna know what to do YOU know that and no one needs to tell you that. I’m sorry they treated you that way because you’re not gonna learn and grow and be comfortable until you do it !! I can’t stand people at all, I can tell your so smart and whatever you do your gonna do and be great!! Good luck on your journey with whatever you do!
My advice: you all have to stop allowing people to bully you out of your paychecks. I feel like this behavior is racially motivated at times, but the company/slash hospitals can face legal repercussions for this, don’t leave without a fight guys. They do this to sabotage your hard work and money you’ve spent on school….and because they most often get away with it!
I left the Operating Room as a new grad RN they gave us a 2 day workshop on scrubbing and wanted us both roles lol. I left after 4 months to much abrasive and sour personalities didn’t feel fulfilled or respected as a nurse.
Ive been an endoscopy tech for 17 years. Found an online Surg tech program course online. The clinicals/surgeries can be sponsored by your employer on the job training. The program is 12 weeks if you have medical experience. Definitely worth checking them out. I was a sterile processing tech 20 years ago so some is review.
What is the name of the online surgical tech program you did? I definitely am interested in it.

I’m honestly, in the program now paying out of pocket. It’s very fast pace trying to work a full time jobs with kids it’s mad tuff and I’m in week 3. I’m thinking about dropping out, the teacher is making every exam extremely hard. I’ve already failed 2/8 test. I have like 14 classes left to get my bachelors in healthcare administration.

X-RAY! For real, I LOVE IT. You can do so much with it. I'm going straight into mammo after xray school. Compared to other departments it can be not as stressful (depending on where you're at). 2 years plus 16-18 week courses for advanced certificates.
Xray can do surgery as you probably have seen. I have definitely seen some rude doctors. I just think to myself, that I don't have to go to a hospital and do surgery if I don't want. You also can switch careers so easily. CT, MRI, Mammo, IR, Cath Lab Etc.
With anatomy knowledge, you would do so well!

Honestly I get treated that way every time I scrub with a new dr. They Just kinda ignored me or sometimes they grab or toss things onto the mayo. And will thank everyone in the room and will never say thank you to me. I’ve been a surgical tech for 1 year now and I left my first job cause I felt like I wasn’t appreciated or just wasn’t treated like decent person. It gets better if you ever decide to go back and finish scrub tech school. Once you know your technique it kinda doesn’t matter is they like you or not.
What is it that you do now? If you don’t mind me asking.
I'm so sorry you had to go through that, it was truly horrible how that doctor treated you. I requested information from a nearby school on the program and wanted to learn more about it since I love the human body. I feel like that doctor treated you like that because your skin color.
First and foremost you are ABSOLUTELY beautiful!
Now that we’ve got that out the way, it’s crazy because I had the EXACT same experience in clinicals. They certainly don’t make you feel welcome, the preceptors talk to you like you’re stupid. That’s one thing that I don’t like whatsoever. Don’t belittle me, don’t treat me like I’m incompetent, and damn sure don’t try to make me look bad. On my very first day I introduced myself to everyone in the OR. The preceptor came up didn’t speak but said “what are you doing in my OR, you better know your A&P and you better know what surgery we are doing.” That was the energy for the day, as a new student you’re already nervous as hell and on edge, then you have to deal with unwelcoming people doesn’t do it any justice.
All of my preceptors made it very clear that they didn’t want to teach, and that’s fine. But my issue is don’t work at a teaching hospital if you feel that way, because you are going to encounter new students on a regular basis. I hate the fact that many people In the medial industry have a “God complex” and think they are so high and mighty as if they started out on top. It’s very discouraging to new people entering the field. After 3 months I decided that the OR just wasn’t for me. It’s not a friendly environment. I decided to finish my BS in biology with a concentration in forensics
By the way sharing my experience is not at all intended to discourage anyone. I truly hope that for all new students entering the field that you have a much better experience❤️
Another girl I watched has been a surgical tech for years and the treatment doesn’t change whether you’re brand new or decades in. She still gets treated worthless even when she does the most to help smh I hate corporate hierarchy. Like relax before I take this badge off and meet you in the lot lmao
Just worried, hope it wasn’t about color 😢
unfortunately, it was definitely about color 😪😪
I knew it!! Sad.
@@shiamarie2621 especially when she spoke about “ not being greeted” I had the same experience.
I would’ve continued with the program and get in contacts with HR or the Board for not only being degraded but discriminated against. I get the same gut feelings from higher ups in the field being a person of color! File a lawsuit mama you are worthy of so much MORE.
Thank you for this girl !
I was top of my class when I went through training as well. My instructors informed me that they send their best students to the most difficult locations. The reason being that the programs have a reputation to keep and you were that person. It's too bad you did not stay but I guess it was for the best. Good luck in your endeavors. I guess you put her to rest. 😢😢😢
It’s crazy to think one doctor made you feel this way , you might not be cut out for the medical field to be honest …doctors are ruthless
i don’t think it’s crazy. I’ve had tons of experience in the past with doctors. Doctors who are assertive, demanding etc. But I was still treated with RESPECT, even though I may have been in a lower level position than them. They still respected the person that I am.
This doctor was none of those things. He was outright being discriminatory. so no it’s not crazy at all, I’m 100% entitled to feel the way I do because in medical school you aren’t taught be treat people less than because of their skin color nor because of the position there in. Just a sad reflection of himself.
I’m so sorry for your experience, were you able to put out the notes ??

So yeah clinicals are rough! And can make or break you!! My instructor always said don't let clinicals break you cuz it will.
And that's what I'm kinda going through now people are so toxic fr. I do have good clinical days that's what keeps me going. & they be high key rasict too.
I would have sue the school or hospital for emotional distress based on race !!! The school failed to protect you as their student. I just got accepted but respiratory was my first choice sadly I wasn’t accepted and I’m tired of taking a bunch of classes I don’t need to try to get into RT program. So I apply for surgical tech and got accepted to start in the spring . Now I may not want to do it because I have no time to deal with disrespect
You did exactly what the devil wanted you to do, quit!!! God allows us to be tested in many ways. Your test was to handle being "bullied" also to utilize "humility". In the world of being a doctor there a many levels, dimensions, customs and barriers to journey through. You never mentioned "praying about the situation". You mentioned "I", what "I" don't like and what and how much "I" know. Never, forget God to go before you, with you and behind. He is the one and only source. Go back you were on the right path for the hard knocked experiences, you'll need to be a successful doctor (instructor) through the years. NO PAIN, NO GAIN ~ Lori

A lot of surgeons can be awful and that's forever. If that's miserable for someone, they cannot work with surgeons. Very few surgeons are as nice as the ones that have youtube channels.
Lol honestly your first month you don't know and if you're told not to do something you shouldn't do it. Not cause you don't know the basics but you havnt actually done it before... learning stuff from a book and hands on exp are totally different... the fact is in the OR when your new you have to work up to things. Iv had students that where bad had students that where good, and your first month in that setting you don't know what a person is capable of. As for the not touching anything that was a test that you can take direction 1 and 2 again your new and in surgery you need to know where everything is without looking so if you moved something and they went to go for it and it wasn't there , that's a problem. Another thing is about not touching anything, it's your first couple of weeks you're not trusted yet so they don't know if you contaminated and don't know about it. From your story you seem pretty entitled, lol I can picture you in there and the faces and body language you giving off, in a surgical setting dealing with new ppl all the time the most infuriating thing to deal with is new ppl that think they know what there doing, especially when you seem to have an attitude.
lol thank you for assuming that I’m entitled and had an attitude. If you listened to the video you would’ve heard that I didn’t like being treated as if I was incompetent. There is a way to say things without degrading someone or making them feel like complete garbage. In the hospital setting I was in , they were not welcoming at all. Even the other preceptors were aware of this and were telling me about certain doctors and their attitudes. But thank you for your opinion on me !
Did you tell your instructor? So that way no other student woukd have to experience that.
What school did you take this accelerated program at?
what did you then pursue instead of surgical technology?

(This is my opinion) You gave up way too soon literally everyone in healthcare get treated like shit when they’re newbies. During clinicals I seen so many new Surgeons get treated like shit by nurses and scrub techs who had more OR experience. I got treated like shit at my first clinical site too thought about quitting but it got better once I realize not every place treats you like that. You letting one bad apple ruin everything for you tells me you were either not passionate about it or need thicker skin.
Just because “literally everyone in healthcare gets treated like shit” doesn’t mean it’s right. It especially doesn’t mean it needs to be normalized. It’s so tiring hearing that from people “that’s how it is” “everyone gets treated like that” and that’s supposed to make it right? I’m just supposed to tolerate it because there’s a “few bad apples”.
No I’m okay, lol. If that makes me seem like I’m “not passionate enough” or “don’t have tough skin” then so be it. just because I won’t tolerate being treated like the dirt on someone’s shoe. Doesn’t mean I’m either one of the ones listed.
I appreciate your opinion, but let’s normalize not being okay with being treated like shit. Doesn’t matter if you’re new, old , black , white, whatever .
@@LifewithAsiaSlim I’m not trying to normalize being treated like shit. I’m just trying to get you to understand it’s reality. Not just in healthcare any job you get I promise you there’s gonna be at least one person who doesn’t treat you right. That’s just how it is life is not a Disney movie as much as we wish it was.
Just because you’ll put up with anything doesn’t mean the rest of us will. Surg tech is a dead end job anyways. It’s no room for improvement at all.

The truth is a lot of these nerds act big and bad because they were punching bags back then in school and still are if they try the wrong person, don’t be a push over
