    I agree that partial refunds are a no-no under most circumstances. I had a buyer claim that the clasp on a $200 bracelet she bought from me was "sticky" and that her jeweler said it would cost $75 to fix. I apologized for the "sticky" clasp and offered a full refund upon return of the item. She conveniently disappeared. I then blocked her from ever buying from me again.

    Justin, Thanks for posting this top. Literally today I had a buyer who purchased a 15 inch XMAS nativity sculpture which was pretty durable tell me that I packed it poorly (ironically most my customers compliment me on my packing. anyways said it came in broke and I got a picture of the box some of my ebay tape and a very small unidentifable piece that may or may not be the item. They said they were disappointed and told me I shouldnt pack with paper which I packed with bubble wrap around the item and paper and I was to refund there money. I told them I needed to see identifiable pictures of the item and then per ebay policy I would decide if I needed them to ship it back to me or not for a refund. This is almost exactly the same as one of the scenarios you gave. You want to always believe people are honest and you want to be a good seller but you have to protect your business to. Thanks again. MR C.

    On the topic of uploading videos via desktop: I would also suggest lowering the quality settings on your phone before taking a video as well. I’ve had trouble in the past with video files being too big to upload to eBay, and have found that keeping the video 15-20 seconds long, filming at 30fps, and filming in regular HD (instead of 4K), keeps the file size manageable and much easier to transfer to your computer and upload to eBay.

    My first ever listing and sale was 3 hours after I listed it. Got so excited and happy. It was a World of Warcraft SDCC lanyard from 2015 and there was only 1 other one listed on eBay at the time for $35~, so maybe I underpriced but it was definitely the fuel I needed to continue.

    In a weird coincidence, right after you first mentioned that baking dish in a previous video I sold a very similar baking dish that also broke on the way. I almost made them send the pieces back, too. Then I saw their photos and realized that for an oblong breakable dish like that, I hadn’t packed it well. Now I’ll think twice before buying that shape of dish. It would have to be packed in a huge box, I think.

      I’ve learned that you need 2-3” of bubble around breakables, so yes, it would have to be a huge box.

    Hi Justin. First, thanks for being descriptive in your content. I usually listen like a podcast rather than watch. I'm a 78-year-old reseller. Many of my listings are liquidating my husband & my possessions, so the sell-through rate is not as big a consideration. I post, if the items don't sell, I donate. Does paying eBay's full ad rate place items higher on the view list? For the most part I try to price my items competitively, but I need to get eyes on them.

    Be careful with adding a second shipping option. EBay listing results will show the fastest shipping option and doesn't say if its expedited or regular. Most buyers are looking at the total cost of an item and even if you've priced your item exactly the same as everyone else the total cost of your item is now more expensive in the results and many buyers will skip over it

  • @jochildress5003
    @jochildress5003 Месяц назад +2

    I’ve done videos on my listings. You’re right. It has to be done on a computer. I take very short videos with my phone and email them to myself, save them to the computer, open my listing draft and upload the video to the draft before listing. Because it’s not a simple process, it took me a very long time to try it, but there are some things that just need a video to help them sell. I’d had this wonderful T Rex “hobby horse” listed for a year and it just wasn’t selling. It was really cool and I knew if I could get the push-button roar on video, it would sell. So I swallowed my reservations and did the above steps. After a year of nothing, it sold in a week. So if I have something that moves or makes sound, I’ll do a video.

    Just about every problematic buyer I've ever had, messaged me first before buying. Sometimes, their questions were red flags that I should have picked up on. Sometimes, they were basic questions or requests. Occasionally there is a comment on the purchase "please pack well" or "ship right away". For some reason anyone who wanted to rip me off, couldn't resist the urge to communicate with me and telegraph what was to come. It's unfortunate for the average customer with a necessary question because I am very quick to block anyone.

    • @Sammzor
      @Sammzor Месяц назад

      I ask for good packaging pretty often as a buyer, because things get damaged by shipping services so often, but also I've seen some really sloppy packaging which caused damage that could have been avoided.

    • @RetrObscurity
      @RetrObscurity Месяц назад

      @Sammzor That's understandable and a good idea. If you ordered from me, your comment would alert me to check your "feedback left for others" to evaluate you as a potential risk. Do you complain about packaging even when the item arrives safely? Do you regularely complain about condition? Are you drop shipping or using a frieght forwarding service? Most likely, everything is fine. I would respond confirming the good packing and follow through with the order.

    • @RetrObscurity
      @RetrObscurity Месяц назад +1

      @freakbuck I can't argue with that logic. At some point, all buyers and sellers take precautionary measures unnecessarily (based on past bad experiences). The 1% who abuse eBay can cause people like me to overreact with a "never-again" mentality. I'm sure I've blocked both good and bad potential customers. I operate with the belief that I am solely responsible for the safety of my business. I can't expect eBay to protect me against all bad buyers or senarios. It's an imperfect system of risk management but the best I can come up with to feel in control.

    Another question - this time about shipping cost. I typically just enter the weight and size of the package and buy my label and move on. But I always look at what the customer paid for shipping vs what I actually paid, and because of the deep eBay discount it’s usually a fairly significant difference…and I feel a ping of guilt. Should I be lowering my shipping cost so the customer benefits, or is it common/okay to do what I’ve been doing? I wonder how I would anticipate exactly what the eBay cost would be ahead of time. Is there a set % off, so I could figure it out?

Then I download them to my PC and build my listings from there. I know this sounds like a long process, but it’s actually really stream lined. Also when taking photos, I snap a shot of every SKU and it makes it super easy to stay organized when logging your data (which should be in Flipwise 😉)

      Uploading, that sounds nice! My wifi and such isn't great (rural living) so I create the listing and take the photos then save for later. Then record my video and either email it to myself if it's small enough, or cable connect my phone to my computer and drag over the video. Then upload to the saved draft for publishing. Doesn't take long once you've got a process but I most definitely don't do videos for everything. Just what seems to need it to highlight the item nicely.

    I learned the partial scam early on when I started. Now days I do not care what the reason is for a request. I will not refund until I get an item back. 99% of the time I never hear from the people again. Things do happen when dealing with 1000's of sales and items and it is just the cost of doing business. What I hate it always seams I get returns in batches of 3 or 4 every 3 months or so.. LOL Never have figured out why. And almost always the item was never even opened and buyers lied and opened a false INAD. I assume for buyer remorse reasons. No problem I am a top rated seller and I only refund them %50 in those cases and report them to ebay.

    Great question from Stephanie and great Answer from JR..this is why you are the NUMBER 1 Reseller/ RUclipsr in my book!! I'm cresting my 1 year anniversary and the video thing was a big question..I do pretty much everything on the APP.. Every single month of my 11month career is better than the last..because I research and incorporate EVERYTHING I learn! Now my question: I had the biggest sale thus far, last week $400+, an older Horror PC game, still sealed..so the buyer asked before buying if I could ship to South Africa, I googled it and was told Ebays international shipping includes South Africa..I told them, they sent an offer..I accepted but they didn't pay.. I messaged asking for payment and,they said it wouldn't allow payment until I changed my shipping preferences and it was detailed , multiple step instructions..very complicated and since I do everything through the app ( and I'm kinda technology challenged)I couldn't do it without cancelling the sale and relisting and changing everything..by the time I relisted I was too weary of a scam and wth that large amount at stake I didn't pursue the sale..have you had to change things because of where it's going? What do you think? Should I have attempted to make the changes or was I likely getting scammed.

I actually just had a claim settled in my favor with USPS so it's not impossible. What I really think helped was the buyer took the item into the Post Office for inspection on by behalf (which I did not ask for and was shocked they took the time to do so! There are still fantastic people out there willing to be good to each other!) Now that Justin has the broken item and original box back, he can do the same after starting the claim (if he wants). Hopefully that will help push it in his favor. All assuming it was mishandling, not less than stellar packaging.

I've gotten several already for things like "doesn't fit" (even if measurements or in the case of hats, size was given) and "ordered by mistake". If I offered free shipping and free returns, I don't want to know how much money I'd be losing. My sales have come to a halt pretty much after a wonderful streak (that ended after I had a NAD case, eBay said it was as described). I'm excited for Q4 but also wary of all the potential returns 😅

    Hello Justin - I'm new to the channel - & have zero experience at reselling. I'd like to start a small scale reselling side gig to see if I can be successful at it. If it works out - perhaps I'd attempt to expand on things going forward & scale up my "operation". I seem to learn subjects best when "how to" information is referenced & laid out concisely in printed form as opposed to only using video blogs & Facebook membership groups etc... Will you please recommend a reseller instructional book/printed course - that provides enough useful information to help me initially get "all my ducks in a row" with operational set up, basic procedures, proper inventory acquisition & practical sourcing methods etc. Unfortunately I'm the kind of person that needs a precise game plan in place in order to feel confident in what I'm doing - & I'd like to avoid as much of the basic beginner level trial & error/rookie mistakes as possible.

    Hi Justin! I’ve had something happen to me twice and I wonder if it’s a “thing.” I had a competitive item listed that had several views and watches. Someone bought it then instantly changed their mind and asked to cancel. I accepted the cancellation request, and my item was re-listed - but now without any views or watches. I’m wondering if this is a tactic that sketchy sellers use to stall people from buying my item over theirs. I typically don’t think the worst of people, but I’m a little suspicious. Thoughts?

      I just had this happen this week for the first time, super fast 'I bought this by accident' (less than 5 minutes), and had that exact same feeling/thought as soon as I saw that all my views/watchers were reset to zero after ebay relisted it.

      I've had the same thing happen to an item that was not competitive. Most sellers have so many items that they wouldn't have the time to keep track of competition like that. I remember hearing something that after a buyer makes a purchase, ebay will show them related listings that may be the same item but cheaper, so they cancel and go buy that one. Thanks, ebay.

    The partial refund "scam" not always is. Like I ordered on xbox with multiple games and controllers but one of the controllers didn't work everything else was fine I still wanted everything else so I ask the seller for a partial refund for the remote that didn't work so as a seller and buyer I think a partial refund is fare in some cases

    I got hit by a combination of #1 and #2 this week. I sold a board game that included 24 pieces inside a zip-sealed poly bag. The customer emailed me a week after receiving it, claiming that 5 of the pieces were missing. Somehow they'd escaped the sealed poly bag, jumped out of the game box, and teleported through the shipping box. They were fishing for replacement parts or lost some of the pieces after receiving it, I think. I sent them some extra pieces as it only cost me a dollar or two, but they are now banned from buying from me again. Thankfully these scammers are few and far between. The sad thing is they could have just asked nicely and I would have tried to help them out, instead of starting out by barking demands and lying to me.

    Since you don't have many comments yet.. I do have a question.. which may relate to the first viewer question about free shipping. I am a Canadian seller and do not have an eBay store subscription at the moment. When you open up to edit listings, it doesn't look like mine at all. Is it different with a store? I can't add shipping options to individual listings. I can only do it via business policies. I'm personally fine with that but may explain why the first viewer was having trouble.

    That buyer didn't even pack that dish they returned carefully, just dumped it in the box. Have heard of other buyers who received stones, empty boxes, wrong CDs etc for fake return goods. All we can do is filter out the scammers from legitimate returns. Don't stress out and let immediate Karma take care of the thieves. Thank you for all your information sharing. Videos are great for those selling equipment like VCRs, Nintendo etc; usually we do the video on the phone, send to ourself by email, then download to the PC, then upload into Ebay from the desktop; only issue you are extremely limited on the video size, so don't take a LONG video.

    That explains what happened. I bought four DVD's for movie night with my girlfriend and her daughter. The daughter was given the honor of choosing which of the four kid's movies to watch that night, and of course the one she chose would not play no matter what device I hooked up to the TV. As it was clearly her favorite of the four, I contacted the seller and asked just that. I wasn't looking for a refund, I was hoping the seller had another copy. I found it rude that I got no suggestions or an apology, just a refund. I put it down to being someone without people skills, but knowing this now, perhaps I judged them too harshly and they assumed too much about me. I bet I am on their blocked list.

I have been keeping all the paperwork but didn't even think about using the money that I'm using to buy items at the garage sales as an expense also. About to start making a spreadsheet. I have all my listings, storage building, gopro stuff and supplies I get since the end of April. I figured it would just do multiple spreadsheets for ebay, storage and supplies and house and internet and phone bill
