  • There's still some heavy stuff talked about or implied in this video. It's completely okay to keep your own mental health in mind when watching.
There's censorship in the video, in the form of trigger warnings and blurring. Content itself wasn't removed, besides regular editing stuff. The video is censored for two big reasons.
I've had a video taken down before from RUclips, with conflicting communication about why, which gives me trust issues about what actually violates their community guidelines, regardless of what other content creators have online. This makes me lean on the side of better safe than sorry, so I can make sure the video stays out there.
Not only that, but if the censored version helps it be more inclusive and accessible for even just one person, who otherwise wouldn't be able to watch it because of where they're at mentally, I'm okay with blurring.

@@sleepingegg1719 imo, not all of them can be said about Basil. But only because the game was mostly centered on Sunny ig, so we didn’t see much of Basil’s experience.

I think there’s a difference between hating a character in a game and hating the game itself. The Black Space segment was supposed to make you become increasingly disturbed by Omori as a character. With Omori disregarding all the horrible deaths of Basil and having to option to cut open Mewo, the game makes you see Omori as the villain in Sunny’s head. And the Truth segment has Sunny getting his fingers cut off and face distorted to show how much he hates himself for what happened. So I think his greatest fear is that his friends will hate him as much as he hates himself upon finding out what happened Mari.

Sunny coming clean about the truth with his friends is probably what empowered him to give such a warm smile and why the SOMETHINGs instantly disappear -- their guilt is gone, they've confessed, asked for, and received Forgiveness and now that burden has been lifted off of their shoulders, hence SOMETHING (their imagined manifestation of their guilt) is gone.

Headspace is an imagined world, which Sunny pours time and effort into to distract himself from his internal emptiness. Hence, in headspace, the world is colorful but Omori is black-and-white. In the ending, Sunny is in color, while the world is black-and-white, and this represents the opposite: he's realized that his imagined world is empty, so it's drained of color. One final thing: the flowers at the end also go to show that Sunny's natural empathy to everyone else shows that his life is worth living. In just 3 days he touched the hearts of so many people in his town as opposed to the 4 years he spent home alone. Think of how many people would miss him if he were gone.
That's why suicide is so troubling. People often don't realize how many others care about them so much.
The reason why Sunny finally tells them the truth is because he realizes how important it is for a healthy relationship to be one without deceit. They may feel hurt, but without the truth none of them can receive closure. They *need* to know the circumstances of Mari's death - they all felt guilt over her supposed suicide, feeling like they were bad friends. Sunny telling them the truth frees *all of them* of that burden, and lets them start over properly.

Omori is a sort of protector, he protected Sunny from the truth, whether it was in a good way or not.
Although, you saw the truth, so in turn Omori failed, so now, he tries to push Sunny over the edge so he can stop everything altogether. Sunny fights Omori, kind of symbolizing he's fighting to accept the truth and own up. If you decide not to continue, it would be easily inferred what might happen.
Although in the end, Omori accepted defeat.

    • @ARandomBoi_NothingToSeeHere
      @ARandomBoi_NothingToSeeHere 2 года назад +50

I actually always thought that Omori isn't a full on personality.
He's born almost as an "avatar" for Sunny to use to explore Headspace, yet at that point Omori still blocked off (or tried to) any path Sunny could take to discover the truth (which is why Basil gets deleted from Headspace altogether, he's basically a trigger to Sunny).
Once Sunny discovers the truth, Omori didn't have a purpose in Sunny's subconscious anymore, so he started to represent Sunny's guilt (which is also why the game says that "Omori will not succumb", you can't stop feeling guilt, you can just accept it and stop crying over it).
Sunny didn't "fight himself", he accepted his guilt and moved on.
If Sunny gives up, he's overtaken by Omori, aka his guilt, which now controls his actions. Not thinking about ANYTHING besides guilt, Sunny decides to jump off. Omori didn't do that, Sunny did.

The biggest question on everybody's mind, usually, is "Did the friends forgive Sunny?" ... the answer, at least in my opinion (the game never explicitly tells you this): (spoilers for those who haven't watched it yet):

The "secret cutscene" with Basil waking up shows Sunny standing at Basil's bedside. He warmly smiles at Basil and Basil smiles back. If the friends had refused to forgive Sunny or reacted harshly/badly/etc, do you think Sunny would have had the strength to stand there and smile at Basil like that, or would he have retreated back to his hospital room and broke down again? Sunny had just had a heart-wrenching fight with his inner demons, and one of the things Omori used to assault Sunny with was "Your friends will never forgive you" and Sunny decided to put trust and faith in his friends. If they had refused to forgive him, it would have wrecked Sunny. Sunny smiling at Basil is, IMO, proof that they did in fact forgive him. I could imagine Hero or maybe Aubrey saying something like "Hey I forgive you but I need time to think about this", perhaps.

    • @pluto3194
      @pluto3194 2 года назад +291

I feel like Aubrey would be the quickest to forgive in that scenario since she almost had a similar thing happen to her with Basil at the lake. Hero would be the one who would most likely not forgive Sunny & Basil but I still think that he would. Definitely agree that the secret cutscene happening heavily implies that they at the very least didn't get angry with the 2 of them, and that the whole thing probably went over as well as it could

I would like to think that Sunny would be OK even if his friends don't forgive him. I didn't take the final message as him defeating Omori with the "power of friendship" trope where he believes in his friends and their forgiveness. I think he forgave himself and accepted that he needed to acknowledge and live in the truth even if his friends would end up hating him.
If anything, him smiling at Basil is only proof that he forgave Basil and himself. It says nothing about his friends, in my opinion.

What personally hit me the hardest about the Omori finale was the theme of forgiving yourself. I think fewer people can relate to that one and most relate to having lost a loved one, but for me, forgiving myself for things that happened in my childhood is so extremely hard.
As a child, sometimes you do really bad things that are either accidents, or you just can't comprehend the magnitude of what you're doing.
I myself haven't gotten there yet, but I hope everyone who feels burdened by something from their childhood like Sunny can comfortable tell a therapist about their repressed experiences someday.

It's good to note that for the entirity of OMORI's control during HEADSPACE, those initial text boxes on what to do will say "Fight!" or "Run..." because OMORI is not afraid to back down from a fight.

29:27 the mirror slowly fading to white and then the reflection slowly fading in is to give you the player the same feeling as Sunny has when looking at it.
Until now every mirror was a hard cut and you felt anxious not knowing what it would show. This was just how Sunny was feeling. He did not want to look at himself and he was anxious about what he would see. Now that he has forgiven himself he doesn't feel anxious looking at the mirror anymore, so the game tries to do the same with the player by easing it in.

17:42 You noted that the music was distracting, if you listen closely, you could make out a voice (presumably a girl's voice) screaming "No!" and also "No! Sunny!" at 19:10, the distortions could actually be the time Sunny and Mari were fighting, and Mari screaming "No!" when Sunny threw the violin down the stairs, and then proceeded with grunts of Mari blocking Sunny's way and ultimately when Sunny pushed Mari, she screamed "No! Sunny!" and all the other distorted sounds were Mari falling down the stairs and during the fight with Omori, Sunny was fighting his most traumatic moment, reliving the time Mari died. Interestingly, the figures behind Omori when he's super dark and pelting you with erases, you can make the four figures, one of which had a bow, and its the others getting [Trigger warning] hung the same way Mari was and Omori was implying that was going to happen to his friends if he tells the truth.

I don’t know but I just really liked seeing how she kept her composure during the final duet scene. It’s a nice detail showing how good she is at her job as a therapist. Because everytime I watch the final duet scene I burst into tears. Every. Single. Time. That cutscene is just super powerful to me.
She kept her composure and looked as if she was listening and taking it in through her expressions. It’s so interesting to see how other people are able to handle such situations and it’s very interesting to me to see therapists handling emotional scenes.
This isn’t to say she wasn’t feeling emotions during that scene, I’m just applauding at the skill to be able to take in such an emotionally overcoming scene as it’s a tough skill to learn as a therapist during therapy sessions to not make it all about them by crying or being in distress and focus more on the patient. Just a random thought I decided to put on a comment.

That final duet scene is so powerful; it’s the culmination of so much emotional and thematic build-up, a gut-wrenching climax. It’s the closest a work of fiction has brought me to cry. For the story alone, this is definitely one of my favorite video games of all time. The symbolism and portrayal of depression, anxiety, and guilt left me thinking for weeks and weeks. I’ve seen a lot of people play this game online, and in every single one of those playthroughs, the person playing notices something I never did, and it leaves me thinking for another extra week. The Omori OST is amazing isn't it?
Omori's boss battle for example: The song is composed by only springed instruments, and you can perfectly feel the dread, fear and melancholia on the song.
And as the fight progresses, the song gets more and more distorded, maybe showing that the internal fight it's getting harder and harder, like it's pointless to keep fighting. You can't just erase your demons, at least, not completely.
And at some point it gets so distorded that you can hear screams (or what should be screams) and at some point you can hear someone screaming "STOP IT!!" (18:08), maybe that could be MARI trying to stop Sunny from drop his violin, and the screams and moans could be of their fight before the incident.
Final Duet it's only made to make you suffer and make you cry nonstop for 1 week.
And we have the song that plays after Sunny wakes up (26:28) and that one is special for me.
That song feels so "light", like that feeling of when you take out a huge weight of your shoulders.
And fun fact: The song is named "Clean Slate", and indeed, it's a clean slate for Sunny, a new start, a new life.
He accepted the Truth, defeated Omori, and finally said the Truth for his friends.
Sunny leaved out a huge weight out of his shoulders, and that songs perfectly describes that.

I know there's other games you want to play, but I have a suggestion for you. It's a game called Yume Nikki. It's very mysterious, so much so that we don't know who the creator is beyond a username. It's similar to Omori in that you play in the dream world of a hikikomori (and it's made in RPGMaker), but there's no dialogue and it's a lot more abstract. Everything has as much meaning as you ascribe to it. There is no "official" story; it's like a bunch of elements spread out for you to connect somehow. It would be interesting to see a therapist's take on it and have you go crazy theorizing about every little detail. It's really cryptic, though, so you'd probably need the comments or chat to help. It's on Steam. (The free one, not the one that costs money, that one's basically a fan game.)

Black space is basically the super edgy version of Yume Nikki. Omori wears the influence of this little gem on its sleeve.

Also, did you know that bosses can go up to 3 emotions??
And, Omori can do it too...

In the Hikkikomori route, on Console, you can fight in a Boss Rush alongside BASIL, who can also feel T3 emotions. We both know where that's going.

I understand how the kind of things Omori says during the fight could be upsetting or triggering for some people.
But personally, it feels like seeing those kind of thoughts in fiction makes it easier to understand it when it happens in real life. You have the perspective of a character experiencing that, so it becomes easier to recognize on your own that your destructive thoughts aren't reality either.
But of course, that's just my personal experience, and everyone is different.

The fight with Omori made me very emotional when I first went through it. A lot of what he said felt like I was hearing my own intrusive thoughts bluntly laid out in front of me. The dialogue filled with seething, relentless self deprication hit very close to home. What an astounding game this is, to be able to truly encapsulate that downward spiral of self hatred many people go through alone. Really incredible.

It's always satisfying to see a player with a room full of flowers after the Omori fight. After all of those degrading accusations, seeing all of the people you've helped care about you and want you to get better... To me, it made me cry all over again when I read them in my playthrough because I saw it as tangible proof that Omori was wrong. He was wrong about Sunny not caring about other people and never doing anything for other people. He was wrong about me. I went out and did those things. I wanted to go be friends with everyone in the town and help them with all of their problems. And if Omori was wrong about that, then just maybe he was wrong about other people not being willing to forgive Sunny as well. It feels to me like a physical measurement, of a sort, of how likely your friends are to forgive you. Not in the sense that those flowers mean you deserve to be forgiven, but more like... your friends know you better than anyone. If you were the kind of person that would be selfless enough to have that room filled with flowers after only three days of reconnecting with the townsfolk, then I believe your friends will know how good of a person you are at heart and will come to understand and forgive you for what happened.

This game is incredibly underrated. It absolutely destroyed my emotional state towards the end. I got the good ending, didn’t get that little scene at the end though where Sunny and Basil both look at each other. Apparently there are 9 different endings for this game (or at least variations).

Fun fact (not sure if it was mentioned below, so forgive me if it has been said before) - 20:30; that last phase in the Omori fight isn’t something everyone sees as you’re meant to wipe at the phase prior, but those silhouettes are of Kel, Hero, Aubrey, and I believe Mari/Basil (note the silhouette on the end with the bow in their hair - whose motif is that?)
They are theorized, from what I’ve found (and I personally subscribe to this theory), to symbolize how Sunny believes his friends will react to the truth of Mari’s fate, thus being *another* driver for Sunny not confronting the truth within himself (which is also a motif Basil has: the idea of protecting the things most important to him - his friends)

I feel like the most disturbing part of the omori fight is that you slowly start to see not just Mari's disfigured face, but also all of your friends in the same position that Mari was iI. It's terrifying to think that Sunny could've thought that he could be the one to end all of his friends.
