      So I'm getting ready to buy the materials for the bar. 2 questions... where did you get your top oak wood slabs? Also, the lower sub top under the top oak piece, where did you position that on top of your main wood frame? Is all the overhang in the front and it's flush with the back of the wood frame by the cabinets or is there a little overhang on both sides? Thanks in advance for the help!

    • @savemoneydiy87
      @savemoneydiy87  4 года назад

      The oak top came from Lowe’s. The sub top is positioned about an inch to an inch and a half over the frame so it hangs over the granite. I did this so when I did my backsplash it would hang over it. Also my original plans were to put led’s there too. Hope this helps. Any more questions feel free to ask.

    Awesome work, couple of questions:
    1.) what width did you go with for the plywood (first piece on top) and the width of the oak?
    2.) how much of over hang did you leave on the interior side of the bar and the outside of the bar with the top?
    3.) how much of an over hang on the side of the bar?
    These are all based off the top pieces alone not including the rail.

    This is great. In your comment below, you mentioned that you needed to leave an edge to support the stepped bar rail.
    "The top piece of oak is roughly 14” and the bottom piece is roughly 15.5”.
    I get that. The rail has a stair step in it so you have to account for that. That’s why there is a difference from the bottom piece to the top." Are you saying that you have essentially three layers on the top: plywood, followed by a 15.5" and then another 14" piece of oak.

    • @savemoneydiy87

      No. It’s not centered. The plywood only overhangs the cabinet side by like an in and a half. Then there is a 1x2 that covers the exposed edge.

      I got them from Home Depot. They are actually a mosaic. Also to make it easier I used construction adhesive on the backs of the tile mosaic instead of thin set. Made it a lot cleaner and easier(just be sure to keep the adhesive mostly even and stay away from the gaps between the tiles). I’m glad you liked my bar and I’d love to see some pictures of yours. When you poured your flood coat of epoxy on the bar top, you would have had to mix two separate batches. How did you pour the first batch, mix a second batch, pour it and still have enough time in that 20 minute window to put a torch on and pop all the air bubbles over the entire bar area which is about 17 sq ft?

    • @savemoneydiy87
      @savemoneydiy87  3 года назад

      You mix one small batch for the seal coat and apply it. Then wait 4-6 hours before pouring the flood coat and popping the bubbles.

    • @stevenlong5817

      @@savemoneydiy87 When you did the flood coat, did you have enough mixed to do it in all one pour, or did you have to mix another batch? Was your bar top too large for a one gallon combined pour where you had to mix another batch to finish the flood coat?

    Eislek3652. Great looking bar. I got most of my questions answered through the questions and answers below. My only question is: The first layer of plywood mounted on top of the frame. How many inches of overlap did you have toward the rear of the frame. It looked like 2" or 3" but was hard to see from the video. Thanks

    • @savemoneydiy87
      @savemoneydiy87  5 лет назад

      If you’re talking about the side that hangs over the granite it’s a 2” overhang on the plywood. But the edge of the plywood has another piece of wood creating a border that is 3/4 thick. So total overhang would be 2.75”. If this isn’t what you’re talking about let me know.

    Hey There.... Well, It's been a while but I finally am ready to stain my bar. Very similar to yours. Thank You! I see in one comment you say 3 coats of polyurethane on the bar rails, then another, you say 2 coats of poly from a spray can..... can you clarify? I'm sure I'll see how it looks... Also the stain... Cant seem to find Java Gel stain at lowes or HD...Was there a brand if you can remember? or a specialty store you used? Last....The Epoxy you have posted....is it basically one coat thin as a seal coat then one thicker for the flood? Thanks Again!

    • @savemoneydiy87
      @savemoneydiy87  Год назад

      Either amount will work on the bar rails. I don’t really remember how many I did. Just do it until you get the finish you like. If you poly the bar top before you epoxy just be sure it’s oil based and not water based. The brand name of the Java gel stain is General Finishes I picked it up at a small store that sold some specialty stains and furniture etc. When you do your epoxy if you use the same kind I did just follow the instructions exactly as written and you’ll be fine. Mix a small batch for a seal coat to seal up all of the pores in the wood. Be aware it will bubble a lot and its not necessary to torch the bubbles during this step. They will go away and won’t show up in the flood coat. Hope this helps. Any other questions feel free to ask.

    • @savemoneydiy87
      @savemoneydiy87  3 года назад

      Sorry for the delayed response. It is 13” from the drip edge to the tip of the bar rail but if you use the type bar railing that I did it actually goes under it another 3/4 inch. For the risers I just basically made a rectangle out of 4 pieces of wood that was the height difference from the base cabinets. I also put pocket holes in it and screwed it to the bottom of the wall cabinets. Once you put your kick panels on the bottoms you will never know it’s there. Glad you liked it and hope this helps. • @savemoneydiy87

      That’s awesome man. After staining I put a couple coats of Minwax clear satin polyurethane from a spray can over it. You can actually see the can sitting on the cabinet in the video around 1:24. I wanted to pour the epoxy over the bar rails too but the company didn’t recommend it. They said to polyurethane them instead so I sprayed everything and then epoxied the top. I used spray due to the fact the gel stain I used was known for “pulling up” if you brushed the poly on it. Hope this helps.

    Nice job on the bar. Question...I am using the same epoxy on my bar. The instructions recommend a bead of clear acrylic caulk around the inside of the bar rail to prevent any air bubbles coming from under the gap or seam. Did you use clear caulk on around the rails on the bars you poured epoxy on? If not, did you have any issues with air bubbles from any gaps? I wasn't planning on using caulk cuz I figured it would be noticeable. Also, how many coats of poly did you put on the rail? Thanks.

    • @savemoneydiy87
      @savemoneydiy87  4 года назад

      I actually used glue. Went on white and dried clear. Didn’t use a lot just enough to seal the gaps. You can’t see it. I did 3 coats of poly. Also don’t be alarmed when you do the seal coat as there will be a lot of bubbles and there is no need to pop them. The flood coat will take care of them. Another thing if you have any epoxy left in your container take it outside and sit it in the dirt somewhere. I did a guys bar and forgot to take it outside and it almost melted through the bucket onto his new floors. I have a video of that epoxy pour on my channel. Any other questions feel free to ask.

    • @savemoneydiy87
      @savemoneydiy87  3 года назад

      So the shelves I routered a slot in them to lay the LEDs. At the end of each slot I drilled a hole through the shelf and lined up my flange hole with that. Once I knew where the shelves were going I drilled a hole in the wall where the other flange lined up and fished cat 5 wire through the hole in each flange and out through each shelf. I then mounted the shelves and soldered the wire to each strip and daisy chained them together. Then it is fed through conduit I installed in the framework of the bar and into the inside of the cabinet where I have an outlet and my controller. If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

    • @savemoneydiy87

      So for the pipe flanges mounted to the airstone what I did was took a hole saw and cut a hole in the stone the size of the flange and removed all of the stone. Then I took that same hole saw and cut a hole out of a piece of either 1/2” or 3/4” (I don’t remember which) wood and glued it in the hole. This pushed the flanges back out flush with the stone. Yes I used the same stain on the cabinets and the bar top. It’s called Java Gel Stain. I didn’t stain the inside. All the LEDs are plugged in an outlet inside the cabinet. I made another video explaining some of the stuff I did and prices for everything if you care to watch it. Hope this helps. If I didn’t answer your questions or you have any more feel free to ask.
