I'm self employed so I fully understand the difference between "Profit " and SURVIVAL. I install HVAC professionally, (16 years ) and in my spare time I do small engine repair. I buy mowers, string trimmers, chainsaws, etc...... from a scrap yard, yard sales, thrift stores and anywhere else I can find them. And then I spend money for parts and then repair them. And THEN I check them out for several days. Just so I can try to sell them to someone who wants to buy them for LESS than I have in them because they THINK I'm making a bunch of money. And then I have the taxes, utilities, and labor if I can get any help. All so I can be broke at the end of the year.
If it was so easy and money was pouring in everybody would be doing what you do. Obviously not the case. You have a lot of overhead that people tend to forget about, let alone the land and place to keep and store vehicles. You are a hard working man, and I enjoy seeing your adventures. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe a God bless you and your family. Peace
Yea people who have never done this kind of work just don’t understand those numbers and how hard it can actually be sometimes. And like u said u have to fig ur time ur equipment cost ur help cost if u have any help it all adds up the cost to buy the stuff. It’s definitely not all profit for sure. You keep up that hard work and these videos coming. I just love watching. You have a fantastic day.
Interior parts on those cougars bring decent money. Bucket seats, consoles, dash parts, side panel covers in the back seat, steering wheels - even needing upholstery or restoration. Hood hinges are cougar exclusive, they don't crossover to mustangs or falcons. To ebay or not ebay, that is the question lol. I know you said parts aren't big in your area. Yea lots of people get upset about people making money without knowing what it takes to make it. The explanation helps some, but for others you couldn't explain enough. They'd be convinced you were being greedy no matter what you said. Thanks for sharing
Hopefully oneday I end up getting the mothballed EZ Crusher that my friend inherited with tons of other tractors, loaders & heavy equipment....its literally been winterized indoors for several years, my friend didn't even know what it was when I went up there with him
Evening Silas, personally, I don't think it's anyone's business the money that you or I make, I understand what it takes to run a business, like you said, you have good days & bad day's, I work in engineering for one of the big three, we do ok, I thank God daily for that job....the people that are jealous or complain about what you do or don't make are nothing but arm chair monkeys.....they need to get off there butt and have a........ adventure!!! Be safe!!! God Bless!!!
It's really isn't anyone business what you make . I just like the videos of all the cool stuff you find and do . Everyone dont understand just what all goes on off video you don't show . Breakdowns can get very expensive.
Working the motor pile is a job. Taking motors everything you can think of ,old hemi, flathead every small block, knock all pistons out, stripped down to bare block for cast ,pistons for melt down ,nuts and bolts for steel pile . Tools 8 lb maul ,1/2 inch impact, bars to pry out parts, cutting torch to get into parts. Those little winners are stuck to the Xbox controller, not to tools. Those trannys that need cleaned ,no steel in it would be a small gold mine to me. Even pulling clutch packs to get the aluminum pieces at the bottom.
People never think about your overhead. Those of us that own or have owed a business know all about it. Many think that just because you own a business. That you are wealthy. Truth be told. Us business owners are out here making it day by day just like anyone else. We just have to make more of it to stay afloat.
Great video shame about the Mercury cougars , so many parts still on them , The part where you open the back door of the bus there's a Powerglide V8 transmission sitting right on top , some good $$$ right there
Glad to see you have a positive dollar day or two. Half the fun of the videos is seeing what other people discard and how it boils down as realized value. Keep 'em coming, buddy!
Hey Silas , Bravo on the videos you put out. Your one of my favorite channels to watch. I look forward to them every day. You sure are a hard worker Thanks for sharing with us what you do week in week out. You seem to enjoy it very much and I enjoy watching it very much. All my best to you and your family.
Hard working video! I appreciate the breakdown of your profit/expenses. You didn't remember taxes, property taxes and insurance- those take a hefty bite out of an honest business man. Folks just don't realize the cost of "being your own boss". I'm always happy to see a new video from you. Stay safe and GOD bless
Calculations like those can really help people a lot if they pay attention. Sooo many people do not include all of the costs of doing business in their thinking. They end up running their businesses based on numbers halfway between gross profit and net profit, thinking they are doing well when they would be better off working on a construction site. You even did an hourly rate for your time, but it would still be valuable to estimate and amortize the equipment and building depreciation, as well as other materials you discussed over your activities. Nice job.
Hmm, cougar is a bit rough, but I'd try and save it. Those cragers are a bit crusty though, ida pulled them off anyway though. That glass is definitely saveable. I got a buddy of mine that cant even drive his '68 cougar right now because he cant find back glass for his car.
Silas i was self employed for twelve years, charging a hourly rate , many people thought it was high ,but dont think of all your expenses it takes just to run a businesses ,as you have just explained , great content ,thanks from the UK
I liked hearing the number crunching breakdown. I'm sure it's hard to keep track of all that stuff when you got the gates open, and multiple jobs going on at the same time. I'm sure there are a lot of self employed people that dont figure in every little aspect but it's the small stuff that adds up and affects the bottom line.
Thanks for sharing, your a hard working guy ( a dying breed ) ,😉 and have a good eye for the bits and pieces of the culture we have all lived in . It's always a fun video to see what you run across in your part of the country and how you process it . Parts, treasure, or salvage, some of your viewers ( myself included) would love to be able to save so much of what comes through your gates ! Looking forward to your continued growth and success !
Definitely was an interesting day Silas. Thanks for sharing it with us. I love those auctions but my problem is buying more than I sold. People do quickly forget overhead which in part consists of Wages, Fuel costs that have skyrocketed and fluctuating scrap prices. You do a job I would love to do. I know it's work but I've never been afraid of working hard and getting my hands dirty. Until next time. Thanks
Hi Silas. Great video as always. That 67 Cougar should have an 8" rear in it. Out here in Mass they fetch $250 to $300 for people doing 6 cylinder conversions on their 67-70 Mustangs. You were more than generous paying $1000 per car. Locally they pay $500 if you deliver it to them. You took care of that customer...hopefully he appreciates it.
Lol...love your sense of humor. "People think we sleep with pillow full of cash." If you ever do get a moment out of your chaotic schedule...It would be neat to film that Friday auction.
The 3 stooges won $50,000.00 in a contest. They moved into the hotel Costa Plente. When they get the big check they have a large hotel bill. The letter with the check lists all of the deductions. After taxes and other fees the final amount of the check is $4.85 What you get and what you actually end up with are never the same amount.
That was great Salis loved it your worth it and what you make is your business that is how you take care of your beautiful family and that is it enjoyed it and never miss a video thank you for sharing and your time was really great loved it.
Hey buddy it’s Eddie. Loved the music at beginning and as always the content. Thanks for explaining the business side. People often forget about “overhead” when running a business. I appreciate the videos while trying to do your job as well. Have a good one man and see ya next video.
Silas, most people now days don't and won't work nearly as hard as you do. I have done everything you are doing except the business side and it is hard, hard work. You earn every penny you make. Even cutting the noses (shudder at the thought) is nasty work. Just work safely, don't let your guard down for one minute. Cheers Terry
Bravo! Straight talk, I love it! Was in business myself, in the automotive trade, so yes I know exactly where you're coming from. I made a decent living, but in spite of being in business, never got rich. Why? You I don't have to explain to, you're the same way I was, honest and fair with people. Loved your description of people thinking you have all this money put away. Well WE know that just ain't so! Wish I were still in business, you're the kind of man I liked dealing with!
I recognize that place! That's the old Sutton Kauffman transmission shop. I have actually stacked and pulled transmissions in and out of that bus. Used to be lots of powerglide and th400 pieces in it.
Hey - we like - Buy Cheap and sell for Profit ! Man - all that Alu will make You Money ! You are a very Busy Man ! Loving Your Videos - keep them coming ! Cheers from us in Australia !!!!
After all the overhead of running a business there's taxes to pay Federal and State then several different types of insurance business license fees etc. etc. Really the only good thing about working for yourself is freedom of not having to work for someone else.
Great video, I was in business all my working career and i understand where you are comeing from, if only you did not have overhead , keep up good job we are praying that prices stay up for a while. We are patiently waiting for our next adventure.
Like your explanation of your running costs, but bottom line you don’t have to justify to us about your business. For me I just enjoy watching your content. 🇦🇺🇦🇺👍👍
Great breakdown is costs and profits- it really isn’t anyones business but yours. You forgot about the days when the crusher isn’t crushing, loader isn’t running….
No need to explain the money end just glad you are making money in these hard times I worked for a recycle yard which had 7 yards in Florida they made close to 900 million gross but only net around 300 million after everything
Theres allways loadsa overheads silas not many folk realise how much stuff is and the outgoings of a scrap buisness great vid as allways mate keep em coming 🤘
Expensive to operate most business, if you pay taxes ,keep your yard clean from spilled engine oil ,pay insurance and do the right thing yes you can do ok .most folks think its easy but most wont make it 3 months if they tried.
I scrap bits and pieces that come my way about twice a year. Might come out with $20-25. I can understand the working of your business and it's good to know recycling really pay off and keeps stuff out of the ground.
Thanks for showing the front of the bus,, looks like you know what old stuff to keep .. wondering why you didn't keep the cougar rear and side glass???
Those who complain about what others make are usually people who don't run their own business and have no idea about overhead. If you work hard and make tons of cash, it's well deserved!
Business is business. Profit and profit margin overhead maintenance and taxes all add up towards the money collected. Then you have the employed and making sure you quote a fair price for everything. Sometimes you don't get to see the profit for a couple of weeks. Just make sure you are not in the red. Good luck stay smart.
I would like to know how many riding mowers was in the back of that Ford F-600 that you started to remove the dash in. I am always looking for parts tractors for my lawn and garden tractor restoration business.
What you make is your business and if you make a good few quid then good on you keep it up and stuff the haters all the best Cameron from Kenilworth England
Did you say the price ,I didn’t see , I might of missed it what is the price per ton now , thanks I don’t like the music in this one ☝️ thanks have fun .
The good old aluminum bell housing. Used to scrap them out along time ago on Saturdays with a friend.. Beer money for Saturday nights.
I'm self employed so I fully understand the difference between "Profit " and SURVIVAL. I install HVAC professionally, (16 years ) and in my spare time I do small engine repair. Nooo, not the sacred Cougar window glass! 🤣

Save the cougars! They have value even more than the t birds you have of same vintage. Love your site.

I love that you always tell it like it is. my grandfather used to own a 40 acre junkyard in Douglas Arizona he was the poorest man I know.
Saw a video today from LA..car chase....catalytic converter thieves....cops chasing them....throwing out Sawzalls, converters at cops......
Everyone loves a cougar.
You are so hardworking, wise very fair and honest .
Thanks love how fair you are just found you this week
Love what you do.
Hopefully oneday I end up getting the mothballed EZ Crusher that my friend inherited with tons of other tractors, loaders & heavy equipment....its literally been winterized indoors for several years, my friend didn't even know what it was when I went up there with him
FAST CRUSH! 😊

You can use those big rig wheels. Off those trailers for putting cars on them & pull them with a skidstear
I love the “shadowing Silas for a couple days” videos! It just goes to show that it’s not easy being self employed! Good video!
If the cougars are 70 and 69 and they have a Windsor 351 those are worth good money
I recognize that place! That's the old Sutton Kauffman transmission shop. I have actually stacked and pulled transmissions in and out of that bus. Used to be lots of powerglide and th400 pieces in it.
I have been self employed most of my life. What you were saying about expenses and taxes is so very true.
Hey - we like - Buy Cheap and sell for Profit ! Man - all that Alu will make You Money ! You are a very Busy Man ! Loving Your Videos - keep them coming ! Cheers from us in Australia !!!!
Performance Transmission shops are always looking for good Turbo 400 and power glide cores

And if you had someone to clean them transmissions into clean cast aluminum, and short steel could be another few hundred dollars!!!
Like your explanation of your running costs, but bottom line you don’t have to justify to us about your business. For me I just enjoy watching your content. 🇦🇺🇦🇺👍👍
G'day mate.maybe cut the roof of those cars with the gearboxes out easy
One of the rough things with scrap every job is one broken machine from a huge loss..

Oh the Cadillac of minivans. hope you save the dust buster

Is there any money to be made on the Cougar doors and all the glass? ....and Cragar mags?
Expensive to operate most business, if you pay taxes ,keep your yard clean from spilled engine oil ,pay insurance and do the right thing yes you can do ok .most folks think its easy but most wont make it 3 months if they tried.
