Sorry to hear about your problems. We had vandalism in our woodland last summer. Put trail cameras up and got some photos of the youngsters damaging our storage barns. A local identified them, parents were horrified and voluntarily paid for damage. Youngsters apologised in writing and seem to have learnt their lesson, no further problems. Police were involved but we didn't prosecute as we didn't want to blight young lives. Guess the thing is to catch the first lot then word gets out it's not a good idea to vandalise stuff as you will get caught. Your community looks awesome. Hope you get the problem sorted.

Great review. I used the same Reolink Camera three years ago for security at our new house build. It helped me monitor traffic at the construction site as well as use the time lapse feature to take daily photos of the overall build progress. I still have the camera and like that I can at any time go reactivate the Sim card and utilize it for monitoring something. I did that last summer when a family members home was being remodeled to help them know the progress and who is on site.

Thanks Neil and very sorry to hear of the vandalism. Love the ReoLink - I have two ARGUS PT's and they work great - the fail to load is your cell signal strength/bandwidth, or at least that is what I have determined it to be. Happens rarely. Good luck and hope things improve. Cheers!

As a father who coaches on the fields that I grew up playing on, this hurts. A group of us get together every spring and get the fields ready for the season. It’s hands down my favorite volunteer day of the year. I hope that the vandalism is deterred, and more importantly, I hope the vandals one day understand what it is to love and care for something such as a community park. Fines and/or jail time will hurt, but feeling the love and sense of community in something like the ball park will mean their lesson was finally learned.

I have always enjoyed the videos of the park and the pride the community takes in it. I am sorry to hear that a few people damage property that others work hard and love to maintain for the tradition and the future of your community. The cameras seem to be a good option to helping find the few individuals causing the damage. Some sweat equity and community service to repair damage are in order. Good luck!!. At the risk of being criticized, I will admit to being peripherally involved in vandalism… as a kid, 50 years ago. A friend invited me to hang out him and his friend one night. I didn’t realize their goal was to wander around destroying gardens! Once I saw what they were doing I asked why and they came up with something about the people being mean…
I basically told him I wasn’t participating and sabotaged them by being loud.
At the time I was just disgusted they were destroying peoples’ hard work. My feelings probably arose from helping my parents with our vegetable garden and realizing how much work it took and how badly my mom would feel if somebody did it to us.
This article reminded me of this experience and caused me to consider why my friend would have done this. Boredom, need for validation in other’s eyes, powerlessness. Still, none of these reasons justify vandalism or any injurious act.
Hoping you find the perpetrators Neil and can deal with them in such a way that they are turned away from a bad path.

Neil, living in a place where a pane of broken glass is a crime is great! The stress & anxiety are much lower than places where the crimes have to arise to violent acts to be considered ‘criminal’.
It takes more than police to make that difference. The whole community has to have a common mindset. Faith, family, civic mindedness and learnings throughout life, are components of that. A stable population helps. But, most of all It helps when people know and trust each other!
I too have been fortunate to live most of my life in those neighborhoods. One where misdeeds were all known… the occasional drunken joyride through the golf course… spray paint on the rock wall around the ball stadium… Halloween outhouse tipping… knocking over grave markers… stealing flags from the flagpole in the park… dumping trash… and the like. Everyone, young and old, knew about these things. Because of the connectedness of the community.
And, by and large the miscreants who perpetrated these crime were well known. Seldom were they sent through the formal prosecution system…but all of them faced a justice system far more powerful. The town grapevine! Your standing in the town was wholly dependent on what flowed through the intricate web of the grapevine. Respect, inclusion, friendships, social interactions and often times income were dependent on whether the stuff about you, flowing through the grapevine, was good or bad.
Because the news cycle of the grapevine was long. Because the tendrils of the grapevine were numerous and deep. Because the grapevine encompassed businesses, schools, busy bodies, social clubbers, churches and every family member within the community… it usually didn’t take long for the word to get out… sometimes “Who did it” was known before “What was done”!
    Did I mention party-line phones?
Once the accusations came across the grapevine.. the investigation would start. Oftentimes, the guilty would confess at this point. But not always. Then the prosecution phase set in. (Especially, effective was a call to parents when a youth was involved.)
Because the grapevine occasionally circulated tainted water, This phase was the weakest… but, there was almost always someone who would advise the accused of allegations. They then could choose to fight it or fess up.
Most paid their restitution without sentence… and, most often in the form of service. But, there were those suspects that got off. Guilty or not? I never knew… but their spot on the town totem pole slid down… unless a more likely suspect emerged.
That form of justice was quite effective at maintaining peace and honesty. No one wanted to walk around under the shade cast by the grapevine. I believe some communities call it ‘shunning’.
Then, my world changed. I moved from a town where police presence consisted of the local deputy sheriff stopping by the bakery/donut shop once a day… to one with a full time police force… having enough personnel they had to give them titles and ranks!
The grapevine gave way to the local newspaper, radio and tv. The only crimes reported were violent and often heinous. Traffic offenses were so numerous the police blotter occupied a full column of fine print in the Wednesday newspaper. And, locks, walls, fences, guard dogs, security services, barred windows, graffiti art, trash and litter were what I considered ubiquitous… but, the residents considered normal. And… in most peoples minds it was tolerable because, “That is just the way it was!”
We chose to leave it after one year… came back to our small town full of busybodies and plugged back into the grapevine.
That was almost 45 years ago. Things have gradually changed. Those webs of the grapevine are much less encompassing. The totem pole standings depend less and less on civil obedience and personal accountability.
But, we still have community bonds. Our rural area has an occasional activity… weiner roast, fireworks display, phone list notifications, meeting at the corner post… we all know each other and we know what’s going on.
We have been looking for a security system that will do just like that one. Four neighbors have different systems. None of them have proven to be effective.
I’m going to peruse that one… hopefully it is the one we’ve been looking for! Thanks Neil… you may have helped solve a problem that is 45 years in the making!

Such a great perspective and poignant comment sir! We should be thankful that this is what we get worried about. I'm glad to be forced to think about that in light of recent events abroad as well.
Our system of justice has worked much in the same way for a good long while, but nowadays it seems that it isn't as effective as more and more youth are from out of town or family units have grown apart, etc.
There used to be a group of kids that hung out in the park almost daily and I would catch them on my previous security cameras. All of the time. I made an effort to get on there and talk to them and empower them to take ownership of the park and let me know if they ever saw any trouble down there. That effort of just reaching out did wonders for our situation and I think just having kids know that they can take pride in something that they don't necessarily own was a big step in keeping vandalism at bay during that time period.
They have since grown up and moved on in the last five or six years and don't hang out down there anymore so we lost our little security network. Hopefully these cameras can do the trick, especially if we share some resulting images on local social media platforms to kind of get the word out that there's eyes in the sky.
And would you believe that I am just barely old enough to remember party lines! We shared a phone line with my grandparents to the west of us and our neighbor to the east of us. I can remember several occasions where my parents would answer the phone knowing by the ring that it was intended for my grandparents. But we could see that they are outside and not able to answer, so we would answer ask the person to hold on and my mom would whistle as loud as she could to get my grandparents attention and they would know to go in and pick up the phone!
Ha! I hadn't thought about that in a while. By the time I was in high school they had done away with it, so all of my adolescent conversations were safe :)
Thanks for offering up what is important to be thankful for. I don't wish to experiment with anything that has a greater risk than Harlan Park!
I hope those cameras can work out for you. From what I found online, most people are happy with them. Much of the performance is based on how good the cell coverage is.
      Thanks Dave

The app has trouble loading sometimes and I've had several instances where it didn't even go off when I drove in front of it. I have both the Reolink go and Reolink go PT. I would say its one of the better security system cameras on the market and would recommend the Reolink go. It's cheaper and perfect if you don't need to move the camera remotely. Also, the image quality drastically improves at night if the area is well lit.

than you have a nice wide field overview , then you should only test whether your image is still good enough when you zoom in on a face or license plate.
maybe some nice looking steel shutters/covers as used to be common on farms over the windows so they can't reach the glass to throw it in.

Eventually a bowling alley / movie theatre came in and overnight that was where the teenagers wanted to spend their time. Obviously it isn't easy but kids are dumb, and pride in a town takes years to grow. Best thing you can do in the meantime is give them something to do.

My dad was inducted into Minnesotas Sport Federations Softball Hall of Fame for his years of volunteerism before he passed away. He used to get so mad at the geese for pooping everywhere I can imagine how you guys feel about vandals. Good luck to you all. And glad I'm not the only one who ends up in trees.

This was a sad video. I live in a similar small town. So small in fact when I was growing up alot of people didn't even take their keys out of their cars. Fast forward to today, I had to install cameras. I bought some from Walmart. They aren't as fancy as yours. And when there's an alert it just captures a still. But it did help catch someone that stole a bunch of my tools, they took my locked tool box and all out of my pickup. Sad world we're living in. But I guess we got to focus on the positive things. Maybe with all your viewers , you should start a funder raiser to replace your shed and equip. Thanks for sharing Neil.

I know what you are saying I have sepent 30 + years remodeling and resideing my old house. It has been resided for about 8 years now and about 3 months ago someone decided they thought my garage would look better with a strip of white spray paint down the side. So my wife and I went out and purchased the Ring system and put up 2 door bells and a camara with 3 motion lights. Any way the system you have installed sounds like the way our Ring system is working. The camara does not always connect with WIFI or Cellular, the door bells work ok. First I'd like to ask where are these parents??!!.. sad that in every culture there is the bad, good, n ugly. As I've explained to my kids..its like a family living in a home..why would you want someone lazy, destructive, arrogant, someone who thinks is owed too living in your home. My kids think I'm racist towards my own culture (Mexican), but as I explained every culture has there bad n good n ugly. You want a good tenant one go want to better themselves by act instead of as a resume. I come from a family with work hard n values, you prove yourself by works n love. As parents, where did we become absent to giving time, rules, n knowing where are kids are?...as I tell my friends n my family, ppl that suffered greatly, ones who grew up very poor and have learned from it, become to love and become to be teachers. Ones who have not, are destructive, n complainers and self absorbed as well as takers. Sad that parents have become self absorbed or lazy to see what kids are doing or give rules n disapline.

We did install some cameras. The cameras work but the amount of feedback they provide to whomever is monitoring them is overwhelming. They go off very often since it is a public place, so we have gotten to the point where we ignore them and hope that if anything happens like this again then hopefully we will have captured it. So far the vandalism has been lowkey since the making of this video.
