    Love this video, Neil. Great point about the Part 107 license. I just did my 2-year renewal. I started with the original Mavic Air. Within the first 48 hours, I inadvertently flew backward onto the highway and it got hit by a bus (objects are closer than they appear!). Luckily, I bought the DJI insurance. I recently upgraded to the Air 2S like you. The only real reason was to get longer battery life. I may have flown into a bus, but I haven't got stuck in a tree (yet). 😄

      I had the insurance in my first drone and used it twice 😬
      I'm always pushing it to the limit.
      Glad to finally have the 107 accomplished. I was offered a free training course through work and took them up in it.
      Thanks for watching Ed! I'll keep my eyes out for buses but I'm still thick with trees around here.

    Option 3 for drone retrieval (and I've not yet had to try it) - a tennis ball tied to the line on a fishing pole - throw it over or past the drone, then saw it back and forth to shake it loose. Certified drone guy in NY, was just watching the last video an saw you get it stuck, said out loud "I hope he shows us getting that down" and sure enough, you did.
    For a fun (small) income source, find a local realtor that needs aerial footage of listings - get paid to fly over some interesting places. It helps to pay for the next drone...

    Drones can definitely make the video. The main reason I use the mini over the air 2 is since it doesnt have the obstacle avoidance. majority of my flying is in wooded areas. my favorite shot is flying through the trees and breaking out of the canopy over the forest. The obstacle avoidance detects limbs and will "fight me" the whole time. also worth mentioning, the mavic mini does have preprogrammed quick shot flight patterns as well and if a fella drives slow enough, it will track for a short amount of time. And new the mini 2 will shoot up to 4k, unlike the original mavic mini. awesome video and the lighting setup is awesome. looking forward to the next one.

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  2 года назад

      Excellent points! I love those shots in the woods. My house sits in the middle of 200 acres of open field and I still hit the trees somehow so I admire flights through the forest!
      I had used some of the auto modes on the mini as well. Forgot to mention that it had it also.
      I bought the mini2 and the mavic2s at the same time. Flew the 2S first and was just impressed with the power and handling to fight the wind. Mini 2 fit the wallet much better but I was sold after flying the big one. I could see the obstacle avoidance being annoying in the forest for sure!
      Thanks for the additional thoughts Mike. I don't think you can go wrong with either one. I'm planning to fix my mini in hopes I can crash it again one day :)

    I was wondering about the "bucket method". Interesting to hear a little bit about the legalities. Every time I think about buying a drone, I just have to remember I have 20 thumbs. In the 70's I built a very realistic Tamiya RC truck. This thing has straight axles with differentials. drive shafts, steel leaf springs, and a transmission that required its own channel. Building it was the fun for me, but I really never learned to operate the remote.

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  2 года назад

      I always wanted a high end RC Truck when I was in my teens. And my uncle had RC helicopters and planes. They always just sat up on a shelf and I drooled every time we were over there. I never saw him fly them and later he confessed that after building them he couldn't stand the thought of crashing them! They were very complicated though back in the 80's I bet. I'm glad the drones are so easy to fly now. You could do it with no problem.

    As others have said, your editing is great. The transitions you showed in this vid were smooth. IMO, a drone shot is only good when it actually adds to the video, and doesn't make the viewer think, "Oh, it's *another* drone shot." Once it got going (the start was a little rough due to the camera angle), the first transition you showed is a great example of this. Until it started gaining altitude near the dump truck, it could have very easily been a handheld shot. By then it didn't really jump out as a drone shot.
    Drone shots -- just because you can (include them) doesn't mean you should...

This is good information for anyone who might be interested in getting and using a drone. Your videos are always very well put together and relay the passion for the subject. I am always experimenting with light. I find that the less cluttered the background the more focused the eye is on the subject. So the darker works in when focusing on a small area. Idea - Requires a 2nd working drone, but thinking about a retrival type service drone: Is there any way you could glue or fasten a "tow" loop (fabric or plastic) on top of the drone to be able to catch it with a hook from a 2nd drone? This also requires a hook (think of fishing line and slightly weighted hook) on the 2nd drone. Anyway, just a thought outside the box .... er tree, IF you didn't have a boom truck and bucket available. BTW, the brighter lighting shot at the end was easier to see what you had on the table. Of course. 🙂

    Neil… this is a subject about which I’ve proven my ignorance several times! I picked up a lot of great tips. Thanks…
    About a year ago… I bought two mini drones. One for me and one for my 14yr old grandson. My thinking was that I could learn a little and he could teach me the rest.
    The drones were scarcely larger than my palm. The body was about half as large as that Mavic Mini.
    The instruction sheet was a half set of high gloss paper… printed on on both sides. The images were blurry and the text was nearly illegible. What I could read was obviously written by a non-english speaking person. (Let me correct that. The instructions made no sense. However the warranty, safety and disclaimers were perfectly spelled out. I could plainly tell that the company was not responsible for anything… and there was no support or possible return available.)
    Between the two of us, we were able to get a drone aloft. With my grandson at the controls… At about 10’ above the ground the 5mph breeze sent it directly into a bush.
    So, we went online and found out that the only further instruction was to download the control app. We did… and spent about an hour trying to get one of the drones to pair up.
    Once paired, the software had both English and Chinese labels… You couldn’t select a language… You got one or the other… but never both. My grandson figured out what several of the icons meant by trial and error.
    We are three hours into this… so, I suggest we go to the creek bottom field. It is 120 acres and about 50ft below a cliff that will shield it from the fierce 5mph wind!
    We fire it up and he does a couple of low level flights. The controls work pretty well but, the camera quality is so grainy that we can’t tell if it is us below it or one of the neighbors cows.
    Confident that he can control it, grandson changes out the 5minute battery and launches it for a higher flight. Once it gets high enough that the maelstrom overhead begins to affect it… he turns it into the wind and tries to bring it back. It is about 75’ high and about 100 yards downwind. He is able to slow its rush away but cannot fly it back to us. It continues to drift.
    At about 150yds it abruptly severs connection with us. Nothing he can do has any effect in it. We watch as it climbs and heads away from us at a furious pace. Soon, we are looking at a spec disappearing into the clear blue sky… toward the creek.
    I can’t see it anymore so I tell him to keep an eye on it. Finally, he thinks he sees it flutter down near the tree line at the creek. I have him fix his eyes on the spot as we jump into the Gator and head straight for it.
    When we arrive… there is no sign of it. I back the Gator up and make sure we weren’t parked over it. Then we commence a half hour search.
    You know Neil, a cow pasture in June that hasn’t been mowed… with a brushy edge and overhanging trees is a pretty good ‘Where’s Waldo Challenge’ for anyone. Especially when one wears glasses and is looking for a black spider no bigger than his hand!
    But, eventually my grandson discovers the drone. It is none the worse for the flight. However the landing was in a fresh cow patty. If we weren’t farm boys the ick factor would have been unbearable. As it was, we just picked it up and dealt with it.
    Did I mention we had two of these marvels of modern Chinese marketing technology?
    The second drone was no better. We paired it up on a perfectly calm hot summer day. Grandson flew it in the yard. He wanted to video a fly around of the treehouse we had built. The first half of the flight was flawless… but, as soon as it ducked behind the metal roof of the treehouse… it lost connection and proceeded to fly to a crash landing on the neighbors roof about 300yds away!
    Neil, my grandson tells me it’s the equipment. But, I showed him the videos on the marketing company’s website. I argue that if they can do it… we can do it. He hands me the controller and says, “It’s all yours!”
    They’ve been in the box ever since!
    So, here’s where I am at. It’s time to find some better equipment. Brandon (Elite Earthworks) and I are supposed to get together this week for a primer on drone features and controls. I’ve been watching a ton of drone ‘How To’ vids. I am ready to put my grandson back in the pilot seat… so that he can teach me to co-pilot!!!
    Your video’s timing couldn’t be better. I’ll have him watch it when I surprise him with his new aircraft this spring!
    Thanx bud….
    Now, if I could just find someone who would like to have a couple of slightly used toy drones… one of which comes with a few specs of green camouflage… I’m all set!

      @digdrivediy  2 года назад +1

      Oh man. This was great for a chuckle. I have had experiences with the same type of drones in an attempt to appease all the little ones around that see us big kids flying our drones. I think they all share the same marketing team that can flawlessly pilot this aircraft with keen precision, yet the fine print reads like you say "that the company is responsible for nothing and you have no hopes of return"! I wonder how many of these drones sit upon a dusty shelf or occupy junk drawers across America. I know right where my daughters' drone lays and it probably won't move until we move.
      It's such an emotional roller coaster too cause you really have these false hopes of it working great and having a fantastic time flying... Only to have reality set in when you watch the thing fly off into the horizon. Good thing they're cheap!
      So, what I'm saying is don't feel bad. I know many of us have had the same hopes and expectations of a toy drone only to find ourselves combating the disappointment by handing over the controls of a very expensive drone to our 8 year old daughters. Or maybe that's just me. But, the best part about that situation was they did a great job and started to learn early! Now at 10 years old, my girls can fly the drone and keep it from crashing when I've got my hands full in a project. My only hope now is that they remain interested!
      Best of luck with your drone training. I've had a great 2 years of getting to learn how to fly and it's still a ton of fun every time I put it up in the air. I'll be looking forward to all those cinematic shots coming this year. Hopefully the next one flies clear of the cow patties :)

    I love your long drone shots. They tell a much better story.

    Yep, sent mine into a tree while my son watched in frustration. I have a lazy eye, so depth perception isn't my strong suit. That damaged some parts, so had to buy some replacement parts. When I couldn't get that to work, I had to send it into someone to have it repaired. On the second flight after getting it back I didn't get one of the propellers fastened on securely enough. It was foggy out and I wanted to get a view from above the fog. I sent it straight up to it's 400' max to see what the neighborhood looked like. After about 5 seconds up there the propeller in question came off and the drone crashed straight down from 400'. End of drone. End of piloting. We received the drone as a gift from a relative that had received it and didn't really have any interest in flying it. Up side, it didn't cost us anything initially. Down side, I felt bad for crashing something we had received as a gift from someone who was kind enough to let us have it.

    Your drone shots definitely add a whole lot of production value to your videos and make them a step above most. Seems like there is a lot more in the way of requirements than I was aware of. Probably a good thing for all though. One thing you didn't mention was liability and/or insurance. I'd be interested in knowing what kind of things you are responsible for when flying a drone.

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  2 года назад

      Your responsible for any damage that the drone may cause and if you collide with another aircraft it can be a huge issue with the FAA. I'm not sure about insurance but there are rules governing what size you can fly and being able to fly over people, etc. I'm sure you can buy insurance for it but I haven't looked into that yet. Good point to consider though. Thanks!

    I know this is a year old video, but thought I would comment anyway ...I am lucky to have recently gotten into drones for filming after having flown drones for the sake of flying them (sport, not videography). I couldn't decide between the DJI Air 3 and Mini 4 pro, so ended up with both. The avoidance is good but still have to watch for bare tree branches/twigs and power lines, but all in all very good. Try the mini 4 pro, I reckon you will really like it, the tracking is great and very low risk of losing it into the shrubbery. Greetings from Australia

      @@digdrivediyMy Air 3 is my go to drone... if you use ND filters, get the split lenses from freewell as each camera needs a different filter strength. Just remember, if the drone is hovering, I don't think it can react to something encroaching on its space, like, your machines arm will hit it, it can't move out of the way. With the Air 3, the cameras are so good that you can be well way from what it is filming and still see really well. With the latest firmware, you can zoom in taking pictures when set in 12 megapixel. Also if use the mini you don't need to go through all the testing of course you don't get all the sensors either so at your own risk.
