Hi Dan, I'm 55 and 33 years in this job and started off enthusiastic and did employ for a while and went back to being a sole trader as I was totally stressed out. Then I went wfp 8 years ago and that reinvigorated me because I can do 5 days work in 4 and now I never do more than 30 hours per week and now the mortgage is paid and the kids are older life is easier. I got myself a Grippatank system and Gardiner poles and became a bit of an anorak trying different stuff but for the past 2 years I've found my level and compartmentalised life between work and social. You've got a lucrative round there Dan and think how many hours you would have to do in a "normal" PAYE job just to earn a crust. Personally ill do this until I retire (perhaps beyond) as I still get a buzz on a Monday morning when I leave my house (or I'm just weird)😅
I’m not a window cleaner, but up until about 6/7 years ago, I used to have a part time gutter cleaning business, which I worked around my job. I’d actually love to get back into it, and probably will in 2025, so this channel has been very handy to watch at times. Plus you seam to be a sound bloke, and likeable. But you are right. I make videos for a totally different subject, I love it, and I love the editing, the latter takes a lot of time, so if I fell out of love with the filming side of things, there is no way I could do the editing side, which can sometimes take me half a day to do, so I completely understand where your coming from, if your passion has gone for the job itself. Anyway Dan, I shall carry on watching your videos. RUclips is an incredible platform really, and a great creative outlet for people like us. I’m 40 now, and if you’d have told me at 16 that I’d be able to watch myself on TV one day, I wouldn’t have believed ya! Anyway, have a great Christmas and a highly prosperous new year. Cheers.
Thanks for that mate, appreciate it! I just checked out your channel. Your videos are seriously well edited! I can see why it takes that long to make a video. It must be very satisfying once you finish a video and get it uploaded!
Not a window cleaner but I’m done now with running a business now , been at it for 40 years and sick of all the rubbish associated with it that is thrown at you each day. It’s just not enjoyable anymore , everyone and everything is out to shaft you and squeeze as much money from you and drain as much energy from you as they can. Hopefully in a year or two if I can find someone who wants to employ a very experienced 58 year old man I can leave the stress behind and sleep easier however I’m under no illusion that finding a job at 58 will be easy.
Dan , the main thing to s you enjoy your life and family , like said in other comments , most people do their job to support their lifestyle and at the end of the day it’s just a job , it’s window cleaning and it ain’t exactly exciting but it pays well and supports our lifestyles , I think especially as a sole trader it can be pretty mundane but as long as you stay professional and do a good job it pays the bills and at the end of the day that’s all you can ask and use the money to finance a decent lifestyle , it’s just a job but being your own boss and not letting it dominate your life is important, whatever you decide to do it will be for the best for you and your family 👍
Dan, sorry to see you go. Your latest content was still really good and enjoyable to watch. I completely understand where you are coming from though. I had a similar experience but the other way round. I tried a window cleaning RUclips channel about 3 years ago and wasn’t really in to it. Then this year I started again and I’m really enjoying filming and talking about window cleaning lol😂 I have a passion I’m guessing like you used to. I will continue to watch your content whatever it is about. All the best.
I also remember your first uploads on ‘DS lifestyle’. They were the best. I think mindfulness was the key. You were (and I think you still are) able to speak in a way that engage people. Many times it felt as if I was sitting right next to you in your van. Like many others, I can totally relate to what you are saying about losing the passion for work and the topic of your channel. Maybe it’s a bit like ‘been there done that’. In winter time I’ve lost my passion for this business many times. It still keeps coming back a little if the weather is nice. Anyway thank you for sharing your wisdom and experience. Keep strong and see u later. Best wishes for 2025.
Thanks for the kind words mate. I certainly do get the winter blues this time of year! I think it’s certainly something to do with the weather! I need to move to a nicer climate country!
I Am in exterior cleaning business for 7 years now, and I know what you are talking about, this was first year I actually started to get bored.I am type of person who needs something new all the time to get going,I started running YT last year, and now started to focused on it more and more. What I find is that I need to improve things all the time, new gear and new ways of doing things keep me excited.Flying drones, making videos, editing,it does make things more exciting.
Hi Dan. I completely understand what your going through. I started my channel justins scrap metal recovery and it was all about scrap metal. I had enough of being a scrapman but because that's what my channel was about I had to totally change my content. I renamed my channel juicy killa monsta and concentrated on filming what I wanted to do and around things I enjoyed. As a result I've now decided to be a car boot reseller as it gives great footage, my audience loves it and it's a fun topic I can film and share for the rest of my life. Film what makes you happy but that also gives value at the same time. Well done for being true to yourself and I can't wait to see what you start filming next. All the best, Justin from juicy killa monsta.
Hi Dan i sem to remember your channel was DS Lifestyle so why not do that? Just focus on you and your hobbies, your family time. Trips out with the family etc and show what you do outside of window cleaning. We like watching your videos because we like you. What ever you choose to do, just be yourself test the water and go with the flow. Hope you have a great christmas with the family and i'll still be watching your channel mate.
My job was consuming my life and now I’ve scaled back, this has allowed me the time to play golf again. I abandoned the game because of work and now I’m loving playing again. The key is the work/life balance. Good luck to you Dan and I look forward to see what you do next on RUclips 👍🏻
That sounds exactly the same as me mate! I used to play so much golf but then work took over and I never get the chance to play any more! That is something that is going to change next year for sure!
Following since the start Dan 👍 Im a window cleaner and you’ve inspired me but agree there’s only so much you can say on the topic!! I’d like to see content from you on work/life balance, health and fitness, how you invest your money, mindset etc. keep up the good work 💪
Appreciate your honesty mate. So I've been running a car detailing business for nearly 10 years now, but started doing window cleaning on the side in 2019 for a bit of extra cash. Just a few small shops and the occasional house. Then the 'virus' came and basically wiped out 95% of my shop front round. After that I basically gave up on window cleaning, there's so much competition here in my city and I found most of the shops would dump you fast if someone cheaper came along. Honestly window cleaning is one of the most boring jobs I have ever done and was only doing it for the cash. I am still doing car detailing and yes I'm just going through the motions with most jobs, but what keeps me going is that I'm passionate about cars (I'm a car guy) so I like talking about the cars with my customers etc. But detailing certainly is hard on the body like Window cleaning is. Cheers 👍
Like you say, the passion for the cars themselves is what keeps you going! Must be lovely working on a fancy car and talking to the customer about it! Unfortunately not many customers are passionate about their windows 😆
I feel your pain, I’ve been a window cleaner for 38 years now, did the RUclips thing around ten years ago, had lots of subscribers, all the negativity that came with it basically destroyed me, I now concentrated on my family and still clean windows and make an amazing living from it and choose not to share my tips and tricks, But wish you all the best I have enjoyed your videos and you will be missed on the window cleaning scene.
Yeah it’s a shame that people comment in a negative manner. It did used to bother me when I first started RUclips but it doesn’t bother me any more as I have got older.
I think you under estimate yourself. There’s a reason why people were gutted that you stopped the channel first time around. That reason is YOU. People were interested in you as a person. Keep the good work up and look forward to the new direction you take and am sure we will still all be watching your content. 👍🏼
Totally relate to this. I'm 10 years in and just cba with it at all anymore. It's just a job the passion has gone and if I could think of something else to do that paid the same money I would jump in a heart beat. Need to really have a think over Christmas about changing direction. Like you I used to be into all the latest equipment etc now I just don't care anymore I just go out with the aim of getting home as soon as possible. I don't hate it but it's more just an inconvenience to my life that has to be done.
I really do relate to your comment mate. If I could find something else to do that pays the same and is more stimulating I would be off doing that! I have heard a statistic that a lot of people do change careers around every 10-12 years on average. A lot of people must feel the same as we do.
Keep your chin up and look for the positives as with anything its all about perspective 👍 I do a job that millions grow up wanting to do and many volunteer their time to do and would trade places with me in a heartbeat whilst nearly earning 50k. However I often long for the fact of a 'simpler life' - man in van type scenario servicing a regular round near to my house with more time freedom and home at a normal hour which is why I watch this type of content. It's normal to question things or feel in a stalemate but try and find the positives 👍
Sorry to hear that dan,i know what yr saying. I have been landscaping 25 plus years but i still enjoy it,maybe because there is such a variation of work and im doing something different every day i don't know. But i will still check in with you and see what yr doing. Best wishes always.
I think you hit the nail on the head there mate. I bet landscaping has loads of variety. You can stand back at the end of a job and say that you built that! Window cleaning is very much the same day in and day out.
Upload it for old times sake :-) You now see it as a job! Work to live not live to work! It would be good for us to see how you have achieved the efficiency. Don't stop all together, even just a van chat now and again would be good or just the odd work stuff that's unusual. Looking forward to seeing what direction you take. Hope you and your family have a great Christmas.
I’ll be sticking around Dan! I always enjoy your honest, relatable content. It may just be this time of year, but many window cleaners I know feel a bit joyless about their job. Maybe in the spring you may feel like doing a video about work? BTW What was that product you were working on?
All the best with whatever you decide to do with your channel. Are you sticking to the window cleaning for work, or are you taking a different direction altogether? Have a great Christmas and well deserved rest!
Unfortunately I don’t have many options to try something different for work at this current time. I will stick with the window cleaning but will always keep my eyes open for new opportunities.
Never seen you or your channel mate. I've run my own business for about seven years now. Sometimes I get sick of it! Still, I remind myself that's my life is far better *not* being an employee. Good luck with your new ventures.
I think most of us are like this many times throughout the year, Ive ran a decorating business for the last 15yrs and at least once every couple of months I think I need to find something else as I'm bored to death of the same grind day after day, but the problem is, if your a well established business and have a decent wage coming in there is nothing out there that will pay the same so we're all kind of stuck on the merry go round unless you take a massive leap and just go for something else and see what happens.
I get ya, I'd never have a YT channel about my business/job, window cleaning obvs, it can be full on filming and editing a video and if youre doing it about your work, that makes the work harder too, so I completely understand where youre coming from. Find your thing and the YT spark will come back im sure, just not about Koi and ponds lol (joking!) I love YT and its allowed me to do some amazing things and meet some amazing people over the years but likewise I lost my YT spark last year, work got busy and it became a chore finding time to make videos, edit and upload etc. Ive had a break and im going into 2025 running. Ill be hanging around to see what you get up to, you have a natural ability in front of the camera so im looking forward to whats instore :-)
We all change over time, maybe it’s just a new chapter for you which isn’t a bad thing! Would be good to hear about how you film your videos? What camera and editing software do you use? Thanks
I find myself having to come away from social media and have a long think about what it was that drew me to the job in the beginning, after Xmas it's been 38 years and I'm asking myself similar questions 👍
I think this narrative of "do what you're passionate about" is a bit of a misconception. Do what you are good at, not what you love doing, your job is not your life. Maybe you've lost the passion for the window cleaning but I'm sure you still love the flexibility, the uncapped earning potential, not having to report to some middle manager, the stability of the job - people always need windows cleaned!, etc. Love the honesty about it all, very refreshing.
I obviously don’t know you personally but my guess is you are feeling like this because you haven’t got or don’t know your next step. I’m sure you had the drive before because you had a plan. Probably to get more vans on the road and build the business. Since you decided against that you might of hit a bit of a what next moment. I had the same in the fitness industry. Been doing it for 20 years and the plan was the open a PT studio. I decided against that and since then it’s a bit of a conveyor belt of clients coming and going. I’ve been wanting out for 2 years but the money is good and it’s all I know. I’m sure if you sit down over Christmas and put a plan together you will get the drive back 💪
Your not the the only one loool, it's when your doing the same job. I like getting a nice big house, I like buying and selling and would like to do that more. I'm looking to do more ebay etc
Hi Dan I watched quite a few of your videos add some more diverse services to your business mine is carpet cleaning mainly done it for 35 years I still very much love what I do I find it more challenging with carpet cleaning I think if you add it to your RUclips channel it will give you a bit more interest back in the cleaning business try it for a year, tell me what you think that way you’re in the same line of work it might bring you some enjoyment back into cleaning I have to try and relax more and don’t do as much because you can have a burnout in any particular field of work
I have often considered starting carpet cleaning. The only thing that holds me back is that I do love being outside. But it certainly is something different and new to consider.
f*** I cn relate dan, its like I'm watching myself 😂 I would love to have a proper chat one day on the phone mate I could see the call be an hour long 😂 I'm 10 years in and really dont have the passion for it, I've also returned to RUclips since having time away and I'm struggling to bring myself to edit , I'm so bored editing them
I'm thinking about starting a channel to do with my family and going away in our caravan, I would love editing essentially happy memories over myself cleaning which I do all day long its so boring to watch back and edit
You really do sound like me mate! I can’t believe how bored I was editing videos of me working 😆 I am thinking about going down the same route as you, family days out etc.
Keep the channel going bud, you’re a good communicator and easy to listen to.
Thanks man, appreciate that 👍

Nah mate you’re not weird. I love how you are looking at the positives 👍
@@dansmithson cheers pal👌

@ cheers buddy, I use an editing app called power director, it’s pretty straightforward to use to.

I agree completely fella 55 by 56 we would have sold everything the business of 25yrs will close I think the system has drained us.

@dansmithson hi Dan I do a live news report 9 am mon to fri for an hour or so join in and have a chat

100% this!

Imagine 95% of people have zero passion for their job, just pays the bills. Should do a video on fatherhood.
Yeah that’s true! It’s just a shame it is like that isn’t it.
I feel your pain, I’ve been a window cleaner for 38 years now, did the RUclips thing around ten years ago, had lots of subscribers, all the negativity that came with it basically destroyed me,
I now concentrated on my family and still clean windows and make an amazing living from it and choose not to share my tips and tricks,
But wish you all the best I have enjoyed your videos and you will be missed on the window cleaning scene.
You come across as genuine and likeable and that’s really why people follow you and will continue to.
I reckon most will stay subscribed because of YOU.
Keep the good work up and look forward to the new direction you take and am sure we will still all be watching your content. 👍🏼
Thanks man, really appreciated that 👍

I really do relate to your comment mate. If I could find something else to do that pays the same and is more stimulating I would be off doing that! I have heard a statistic that a lot of people do change careers around every 10-12 years on average. A lot of people must feel the same as we do.
Keep your chin up and look for the positives as with anything its all about perspective 👍
I do a job that millions grow up wanting to do and many volunteer their time to do and would trade places with me in a heartbeat whilst nearly earning 50k. However I often long for the fact of a 'simpler life' - man in van type scenario servicing a regular round near to my house with more time freedom and home at a normal hour which is why I watch this type of content. It's normal to question things or feel in a stalemate but try and find the positives 👍
Yeah that’s true mate… I always think about the positives 👍
Sorry to hear that dan,i know what yr saying. I have been landscaping 25 plus years but i still enjoy it,maybe because there is such a variation of work and im doing something different every day i don't know. But i will still check in with you and see what yr doing. Best wishes always.

I’ll still be here, curious to see which direction you take the channel. 👍
Thanks Jed, appreciate that👍
Do whatever makes you happy. I‘ll watch 👍🏼
❤
It just takes one person to make your job a nightmare, especially in a company…
The only reason I took up window cleaning was so I can be home for 1pm no other reason.
That’s certainly a perk to the job isn’t it
Most window cleaners probably don’t enjoy their job. Most do it as they can’t do anything else.
Faiy play - good man
Fair play dan i will still watch new content great video buddy😢
Thanks Kevin👍
Will you be going to the expo in march dan. ?
I’m not sure mate, probably not.
I’ll be sticking around Dan! I always enjoy your honest, relatable content. It may just be this time of year, but many window cleaners I know feel a bit joyless about their job. Maybe in the spring you may feel like doing a video about work? BTW What was that product you were working on?
Yeah I certainly do get the winter blues for sure this time of year!
Always appreciate dan.💪
Thanks Chris👍
All the best with whatever you decide to do with your channel. Are you sticking to the window cleaning for work, or are you taking a different direction altogether?
Have a great Christmas and well deserved rest!
Unfortunately I don’t have many options to try something different for work at this current time. I will stick with the window cleaning but will always keep my eyes open for new opportunities.
Final video on efficiency / how to be quick and get home faster? + look foward to future content you’re gonna bring out!
Thanks mate👍
Never seen you or your channel mate. I've run my own business for about seven years now. Sometimes I get sick of it! Still, I remind myself that's my life is far better *not* being an employee. Good luck with your new ventures.
Yep certainly beats having a boss doesn’t it!
I think most of us are like this many times throughout the year,
Ive ran a decorating business for the last 15yrs and at least once every couple of months I think I need to find something else as I'm bored to death of the same grind day after day, but the problem is, if your a well established business and have a decent wage coming in there is nothing out there that will pay the same so we're all kind of stuck on the merry go round unless you take a massive leap and just go for something else and see what happens.
So true! I do often think, is this what I am going to be doing for the rest of my working life!
You do you Dan & the rest will come. ❤
Thanks mate👍
Hope you change your mind. Have you ever thought of going in to skyscanner window cleaning. Something i would love to do and its very unique.
Nothe feeling pal been cleaning windows since the 90s but the money good 😅😅
15 years for me and i feel exactly the same.
I get ya, I'd never have a YT channel about my business/job, window cleaning obvs, it can be full on filming and editing a video and if youre doing it about your work, that makes the work harder too, so I completely understand where youre coming from. Ill be hanging around to see what you get up to, you have a natural ability in front of the camera so im looking forward to whats instore :-)
Thanks man, that means a lot coming from a fellow RUclipsr 👍
We all change over time, maybe it’s just a new chapter for you which isn’t a bad thing! Would be good to hear about how you film your videos? What camera and editing software do you use? Thanks
Yeah I feel now is time for change. I’ll do a video at some point regarding the editing and filming 👍
I find myself having to come away from social media and have a long think about what it was that drew me to the job in the beginning, after Xmas it's been 38 years and I'm asking myself similar questions 👍
It is scary how quickly time flies by and you find yourself doing the same job! Respect to you for the 38 years!
Yeah that’s all very true. I always do try and look at the positives of a situation. Life could certainly be a lot worse!
@@dansmithson it could, and you're more than Dan the window cleaner, so I for one will be staying subscribed for the banter to come!
Tbh all jobs suck. As long as you can pay ur bills, save, i would pick the least sucky job you can do.
Looking forward to the new content Dan
Thanks Jamie👍
It’s just winter blues mate . Keep your chin up . Get a young lad into help you . Have bit of a lad with you and train him up at same time .
Sounds like a plan 👍
@@dansmithson that’s it mate , I really don’t know what to do but at the same time you need to enjoy what your doing otherwise there’s no point
Only fans here comes Dan 😂🤣😂🤣
😂😂
No surprising really, your a window cleaner!
Yes indeed my friend.
I think you're an interesting bloke. I don't think this channel needs to be purely about your business. So don't knock the RUclips on the head
Thanks Pete👍
me too :-) We can do together Xmas party and a bit moan about jobs :-)
Excessive tax and nearing the vat threshold soon kill your passion
Yep that certainly did annoy me at the time for sure!
