Figma is great… and so are these other tools! Having so many options should be a dream come true for designers. Want to participate in the 2022 Design Tools Survey? Sign up here → uxtools.co/newsletter

Good recap. Sketch, with all its flaws, has improved over the years in terms of collaboration. And being on a Mac, I really enjoy that it's a native app - no 404s and everything feels snappy. The recent addition of overlays to prototyping was a big improvement for us too.

There's definitely something to be said for a native app that never loses connection! Glad it's working well for you.

PenPot looks awesome. Open source also means we won't end up adopting yet another new tool and then watch it get acquired!

    • @uxtools
      @uxtools  2 года назад

Exactly! I’ve watched open source like Inkscape and Gimp for a long time, but there hasn’t been something like this for UI design.

if you knew the devs, its not getting acquired.. some people are made of different stick .. there is also Lunacy.. free and on every platform and can work off line :)

Great recommendation but it's a bit out of date. Motiff can be crowned as the best figma alternative in 2024. A ui design tool with great potential

Great overview, very concise but just the right stuff everyone wants to know !
Or... does everyone want to know ? Do designers want to know ? Do they want to to take the effort of finding out which one is the best ?
Through all decades in my design and training career, I've learnt that most designers don't like to change ship. They hate it, because it takes time. Time spent on informing themselves, spent on picking some tools up, trying them out, making an educated choice, learning the new tool better, converting existing projects... While all this time could have better been spent on creativity, design, productive work !
I remember the times when designers used all sorts of different physical tools and computer systems, to get their work done. Apple and Adobe very successfully brought clarity and ease of use into that turmoil, and gradually dominated the industry of print and video. Professional design soared and thrived on these brands ! Competition seems a good idea, but it actually drives a designer's focus and passion away from what they actually want to do and what they are good at: to be creative. And more often then not, that's not to be a free-loader looking for the cheapest deal, or to become a tech-smart specialist in a slew of competing tools. Their attitude is much simpler: "Does this tool work ? Is it affordable ? Is it easy to use ? Is it the best tool in town ? Then I'll have it, bring it on." That's why the majority of them prefers a Mac, and has no problem with a fair subscription fee.
I know, the field of digital design is continuously changing, so tools need to change as well. That's very understandable and acceptable. But it would be better if a dominant tool improves along with those innovations and trends, in stead of having another new but otherwise flawed tool popping up again.
There you have it, I've said it.
Now, let's hope - no wait: EXPECT Adobe to have learned from their dwindling past in web and app design tools, and to let Figma improve continuously.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply Peter! While I agree that the most important goal for a designer is to *create* I think it’s a bit of over generalization to assert that designers don’t like trying new tools and would rather just get their work done.
I think the biggest pain and cost for switching tools is actually at the team level. Slowing down collaboration and performance for an entire team to learn new workflows and communication patterns is a pretty big risk. I’ve been experimenting and trying new tools my entire career so far!
I wonder if faster, more intuitive tools can help a designer be more creative because they actually get out of the way, or require less time and effort to create? More chances to create? Something to think about!

    • @PeterVillevoye

@@uxtools Yes, it's a generalization, but coming from decades of observation. Hey, I'm in the business of change, I thrive when users want to learn new tools. It's my job to help them. As a matter of fact, change comes from those who embrace it, the minority who doesn't need training and just sets out to discover new and exciting tools. The majority often just follows, lazily (that's where I come in....) But a tool like Figma deserves staying power, and I hope Adobe will help them building that up by constant improvements.
