This is definitely hearsay, but I have a friend who knew some assistant that worked on a few Ricky and Steve projects, years ago. It recently came up in conversation, and my friend heard this pretty surprising story that I definitely hadn’t heard when he passed it on to me.
It’s not recent, in fact it was around Life’s Too Short time, either just before or just after the series aired. Ricky, Steve, and a producer (and the assistant, the source of this story) were travelling back to their hotel in a limo after some awards event. Basically they got into an argument about future projects (maybe Ricky floated the idea of an Office follow-up before the Brent film idea was finalised?). It got pretty heated and Steve kind of slammed his fist against the wall. But he hit that button that lowers the window between the driver and the passengers. Everyone kind of naturally looked through the now-open window: little monkey fella sat behind the wheel.
you got me
Man... A-liiive.
Don’t…. Talk… shit….
I read about that story on the Internet. It was on Ananova.
Chimpanzee that MONKEY NEWS
God knows how many runs I've done of all of these, each episode, XFM series 0-4, the podcasts, NME, The animated show, An idiot abroad, I've consumed all of these at least 5 cycles worth. Still not bored.
Haha. I feel the same way.
You are soo right.. in some way I hope they can start a youtube channel or something to do a show like this.. (radio will be to hard to find when your not in England) but Jesus i hope they will do it.. !:)
Amen sistah.
I guess only God does know, haha. x
Where do you actually get the podcasts nowadays?
Hi again! To anyone on a XFM Rerun roundtrip 🤘.
June 2024 and still going
"And now, it's almost like Karl's a third member of the team."
Wow.
Started listening to this to get me through the COVID pandemic. It really blows my mind I was in primary school when this aired.
I wasn’t even born when this aired
I was 20 and feel like I'm still there. Nothing makes sense anymore. Check out the ricky gervais show podcast. Even better
I was in High School 2000 - 2005 and I was in Manchester and didnt know this aired. :(
Same
I was 11 when this aired.
Excuse me ManMoth, thanks for putting all these up, great work, the world is a better place with these available.
Richard Richard loser
Morgan Freeman you naughty rude little girl
"You know they don't actually exist and never have?"
"......mm."
And so it begins haha
Eric Buist i love when karl replies with that. So skeptical. So unconvinced.
Grayson Ridge it's funny what he chooses to be skeptical over...

Then before you know it, we're hearing about "fish, mermaid, man"
The XFM days just caught the zeitgeist of the early 2000s so well, a simpler time
The early 2000s were by no means a simpler time
I've lost count of the number of people who identify a period in the past as a simpler and/or better time, oblivious to the fact that it's been thousands of years since the world was 'simple'. The only reason you view it as simpler is because life probably was...for YOU. You were younger and had little to no responsibility.
Without fail every generation looks back in time and says that was a simpler time :)
Just nostalgia innit.
childhood is always simple
Hearing them living in the early noughties is filling me with nostalgia and actually making me quite sad. I'd give anything go go back 😪
"That sounds good... It's that sounds good" 😂😂
I would love a compilation of Ricky's links after a track.
My favourite must be "A Retro cut there, Thin Lizzy - Don’t Believe a Word on Xfm 104.9. I’m Ricky Gervais, with me Steve Merchant. Bobbity Boo, who’s that over there? It’s Karly Pilkboys!"
I believe in a thing called love, do you Steve?
@Badbeagle2 Little Spanish archer there
It's the eyes
Amploid has made a compilation of these, search 'ricky back announcing tracks'
a song for karl there....special needs
11:55 You can hear how hesitant Karl is to give out the number because he hates answering the phone LOL
2020 still loving this more than any TV show on atm, play it on my way work each day
The dynamic between Ricky and Steve in this ep. 😍
2019 and I’m still here! Thanks again, Man Moth
And now 2020!
I've listened to these on loop about 20 times. Just started again....genius. Love smerch's high fives. Play a record your an idiot.
+Alan Dodd Aye, I'm with you there... I'll bung a song on.
+Man Moth your a legend for taking the time to put all these up as well as the specials and compilations. What about the guide to's?
Just the 20 times? You're still a light to moderate user then. x
i agree completly
his constant need to have something to say after almost everything ricky says irritates me
18 years later and im still listening
Man Moth steps up into Toby's shoes like he did for Barney before him. Keep up the good work, brothers. Fight it. x
👍
+BigJamook Lol I forgot about goold old Barney! I've still got him in my subscriptions even though his videos have been removed :(
v doll I love the Xfm community, 😊.
what's barney's channel name? I'd like to look it up
Chris Cox tis gone brother
Karl saying he didn't like capes because they didn't have pockets reminds of him talking about wanting to make ties with pockets.
all his ideas have a thread to them, there's always a thread
'Capes with no pockets' Karl = Genuine, touchy little Manc XFM employee.
'Ties with pockets' Karl = Ricky's manufactured pet project, playing the fake idiot.
@@Technolgy2 unlike Ricky’s friends, who have no thread
‘Pair o’ scissors if ya like!’
Funny thing, is they could easily be designed with pockets.
I listened to all the xfm shows on repeat, multiple times, about 12 years ago and 5 years ago. Going through again now and I never heard this episode before ! Thank you ManMoth!!
Had my Sirius car radio tuned to 90's on 9 today while I was switching stations, and Summer Girls by LFO was playing. Turned it up and imagined Ricky buying the CD just for that song. So terrible. "Chinese food makes me sick."
Just started watching Doctor Who, and all I can think of half the time is Ricky saying, "Billie Piper says - I've always voted Labour."
Chris Webber What about Christopher Eccleston's big northern finger?
'Oh god, who wants this... it's Doctor Who on VHS'
@@emmahaines2187 is that a yogpod reference, if it is I extend a hearty congratulations because that's so obscure
Love that Steve's feature something old new borrowed and blue is now an actual feature on drivetime radio 1 😆
2020 and this video has 212k views. All probably by the same 1000 people. I'm on round 20 or 30 and possibly going insane...
July 2020. And this is still keeping me sane.
The entire chain of events in the lives of these 3 should be made into a movie
and we'll call it ... xmen 3
"Who's all mental except for his left foot." LOL
I'm going around again!
ThatChurchill me too
@The Scoutgood. Just letting you know. I'll tell you again when it comes around again.
Steve is right, Frankie Valli's 'Oh What a Night' is a great track.
2nd COVID-19 re-listen!!
I can't believe I got through all of the XFM shows and podcasts in personal record time while in quarantine. Usually takes 3-4 months for me, and this time I was done in 2 months (lots of hiking in my free time).
Takes me one day cause I'm a actual fan, not a part time sheep.
@@kygodragon4782 Don't talk shite!
@@kygodragon4782I love how you're full of shit 😂.
Either a liar, or such a noob, fake fan that you don't realize how much content there is 🤣😂🤣😂🤣🤣😂
I love the hints in this episode at just how odd Karl's mind is.. the Karl believing in giants bit.. the theory about babies and old people.. they're still at the tip of the iceberg 😂
Incorrect you clearly ain't a actual fan.
@@kygodragon4782 gotta 'ave your critics...
Nearly every time I read the name of an obscure band, I hear Steve reading it out loud with that sort of satirical admiration he inflects.
Ooooh! They’re now doing ‘The Something Songs’ on Radio 1 - Steve’s idea all these years ago
I wasnt alive when this was aired but i listen to them 16 years later
Well I’m back again, I’ve lost count how many times I go back and re listen to them all, I only have to turn off by the last episode of series 4. I can’t do with the goodbye as they go to perform at live aid. Also on a side note. What a cool time to be alive back then, everything wasn’t so serious. What happened to the world.
Ricky buying an LFO CD is brilliant
"Is there a height restriction or anything like that?"
Lol.
Man alive... these are turning 20 years old this year.
I feel like this giant talk is the particular time Ricky and Steve realised they had something in Karl.
Dead set 19:00 onwards
Series 1 is undefeated!
36:00 the start of karls odd theories
Lol. My thoughts exactly.
Incredible that they produce such a collection of golden moments on the radio in the midst of they’re busiest creative period for tv
It’s probably why to be fair.
The Rocky soundtrack never takes anybodies street cred down.
make whoopie
After watching these so many times, I only just pieced together that the things they listed at 25:37 were references to voiceover work Ricky had done. I had no idea what that bit was about before
2019 and I’m still listening....
That film sounds good.
Spankspunk69
The show would've been another radio show without Karl. Karl brings the magic.
it feels like Karl is just the secret weapon waiting in the wings in these early episode
God the world is fucked now compared to 2001
19:13 you can tell they still don’t fully understand Karl’s mind yet here!
19:10 that was the first karl-esque thing he said on the show
ManMoth is love, ManMoth is life...
wise words
"Smuggle them in to a No Halliwell Zone."
Seeing as i have been here so many times i figured id leave a message for future me.
Welcome back - when you wrote this you was in pain, may you find the happiness you seek when you read this next and don't forget where you want to be.
Id like to think Atomic Kitten do work in a chippy now 🤣
I miss the film reviews in the later episodes
"He goes boxing in some underpass somewhere."
"It's that sounds good"!!
Erling Hansen although you can begin to hear the kind of drivel he spouts with the giants
If you play it at half speed, they all sound really bored 😂
These get me through my ‘keeping an eye on the kids’ time brilliantly
How come when they play a romantic song they call it - Song For The Lovers
But when they play a hiphop track they don't call it - Song For The Brothers
Missed a trick
Is it me or is this episode "The Steve Merchant Show"
steve is in command in these early episodes, because steve prepares for the show and ricky doesn't.
When ricky interviewed steve he lais his cards on the table and said " i don't know what im doing, if you want to do all the work you can have the job"
Hoo hoo that's true enough
@@butcherax man alive!
@@guypritchard2451 that was before their success with The Office though, wasn't it? whereas this series is when Capitol invite Steve and Ricky back after their success with The Office, after previously rendering them redundant when they bought out XFM (I say 'redundant' - I think Steve jumped before he was pushed, getting a BBC gig that ultimately enabled The Office to happen). But there's a recent interview with Steve when he's at the Oxford Debating Union where he confirms that Ricky was chronically lazy until very recently (mid- to late-2010s).
patiently waiting for season 2 for the better karl episodes
Robert Forster is an actor. In fact, he plays one of the leads in Jackie Brown.
I loved Rosie Ribbons.
35:40 birth of karl
It's been 3 years now on repeat
6 years and counting
Lmao "I don't mean like a Crack pipe"
Chelsea Hotel is about Leonard's brief relationship with Janis Joplin.
Let’s be honest, their features were rubbish before Karl got involved.
Yeah. Like "Song for the Lovers." Who cares ?
True
“That sounds good” was a banger
@@JeffreyMarksWorldyeah who cares give me some made up stories about talking chimps and “rockbusters” aka “what am i thinking?”
Planed on showing my mum the bit where Steve is going mad about the loud woman in the cinema, found it as a audio bite... saw S1-E1 off to the side... "yeaa go on then it time for another go"
25:44 "This is brilliant radio..."
Radio 1 do the 'something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue' feature now. Robbing bastards
I agree with Karl here lmao
First on air "look at his little face" at 2:19 ???
30:30 Ricky predicting his own future.
Ah, the first of the baby morphing theologians
"THAT SOUNDS GOOD!" ----- silence -----
Looking forward to TV listing at Christmas is so retro. Nobody gives a shit about it anymore. People can get any film they want any time they want off the Internet and a large portion of media is consumed via streaming now. Comedy Christmas specials arnt that big anymore either
25:45 made me crack up
Je les trouve trés marrants, c'est hilare
Is there any way of listening to these with the music included? I understand that it’s probably been removed to avoid copyright issues.
Fuck me Ricky bought a Lyte Funky Ones album. 😆
Steve Merchant wants it
the beginning of steve’s hatred of rik waller
Karl actually believed in giants
This material is timeless and i still laugh like the 1st time i heard it. of course, the show is nothing without Karl
The Office is nothing? 🤔🤦🏼♂️ Play a record.
And around again. Early Karl was so different
''IN case listeners want to complain...youuuu....''
Steve just cannot slag off anyones looks.
"And I don't mean, like, a crack pipe."
After years of listening to these and gradually understanding the bits I didn't get and Ricky's garbled phrases, I still don't understand what he's on about when he says at 10:15 that Men Without Hats (who sung 'The Safety Dance' which Ricky refers to as "We can dance if we want to") had "Pierre Trudeau's daughter in their music video". What is he on about.
It was an urban legend that she was dancing woman in the music video, but it has been since revealed it was not Trudeau's daughter
@@NoahsArcade Thank you! My kids recently got into the song as it is in the film Sing, and it made me question it again to no avail.. :)
3:05 Steve’s lovely. I would have dated him any day of the week.
they say they were on air between 1 and 3 so how come it's only 30 minutes long? is that because of songs or do they edit stuff out?
Yeh adverts and songs take up the rest of the time
The bit about oxbridge students smoking pipes is great. I don’t think there’s enough criticism of how pathetic a lot of the oxbridge stuff is.
Here’s a fun thing to do, put on the subtitles and watch RUclips try to figure out what the hell Ricky Gervais is saying
Fuck me. Mate...I’m dying here...”September 11” to “slept anyway”
I've listened to all of these ten times, and still struggle.
can anyone make out what karl says at 20:00 ?
Yes
And on another run
