Dame Joan Sutherland simply remains the supreme coloratura soprano of all time. Unforgettably, I saw her live 63 times. There were many other great singers during her era, but none surpassed La Stupenda, She was simply, unforgettably, the greatest, and, without any attitude about it whatsoever. There will never be enough superlatives for Our Joan, in my memories.

Her voice was perfect for some roles when she was young and had that fast shimmering vibrato, but in general I like her voice better as she matured. The middle got much richer, almost mezzo sounding and her high D's, her best notes, got bigger and more spectacular I think as she matured. Some of them close to 60 were mind boggling.

I’m not familiar with this aria at all. But a lot of critics in the mid-1980s complained that Sutherland’s voice was shot by 1986. Well, let me straighten the record - I saw her onstage in the theater in those years, and even a bit later, in Puritani and Trovatore, and the voice was still spectacular. I assume this an encore in her joint Australian concert with Marilyn Horne?

If I remember correctly this was towards the end of the concert before the duet encore of Norma. She also sang the Vorri Spiegarvi by Rossini earlier in the concert. I for one very much enjoy Sutherland in the 80's on. She sang through coloratura like a gondelier steering the canals with ease!

So right you are Dave. It was the critics ears that were shot. Dame Joan could just "hum" and I would listen for hours. Just my opinion but even at the end of her career she was better than anyone singing today. Actually I like her voice even more as she aged. It was like burnished liquid gold. To me she was a beautiful woman with a voice from heaven. Her technique was hard earned and flawless. She was also a very kind and caring person. No diva antics from her. There will never be another Dame Joan. I am most grateful that it has been during my lifetime that she arrived and shared her voice with all of us.

Many non singers get upset when a singer chooses to transpose to a key where their voice is more comfortable. Voices do change over time.....Dame Joan's darkened with age but was able to sing the most difficult repertoire almost up to the end (her final Lucia in 1988, Norma in 1989) because she transposed. I'm thankful she did instead of hanging it up.
