I've had gamepad range problems for almost 2 years. It started shortly after the warranty ran out. Now because of this I am back to having full use of the wii U again. I would have never thought to look for individual internal gamepad components. You deserve a medal!
Trust me I had had enough of my pad having such a bad connection I was willing to destroy my pad to find a solution. I was glad to find such a easy solution. Dude no problem always willing to help a fellow gamer.
Got my Wifi/Bluetooth card on Amazon for 15$, video instructions worked like a charm. Went from having to be within 3-4 feet to stay connected to 30-40 feet with no issues. Thanks OP! Be careful when placing the leads on the new card... if you bend the metal ring around the plug (on the card), the lead will not properly clamp down and may come unhooked during gameplay, causing an instant disconnect. I did this by accident and had to carefully unbend it without breaking it off.

Really glad I found this video because I was able to fix my Wii U gamepad for under $10. Had poor signal issues with my gamepad, eventually I got 165-3000 error code. I started a Nintendo repair request but eventually decided not to send it in and try this fix myself. I'm totally happy I did. Super easy fix. Took about $5 minutes and cost me $10 -- $5 for the chip, $5 for the tri screwdriver. (I tried a flat head but it was a pain so I just went to Frys and bought a screwdriver.) The best part is it saved me over $100

I did end up buying special screwdrivers since I was having a super hard time with a standard mini Philips, but other than that I just followed the instructions provided and was very careful! Filling in some details: There are 10 tri-wing screws on the back plate. I bought a screwdriver for $0.95 from newegg to remove them. I used a 1.4mm flat head screwdriver to remove the 2 battery cover phillips screws. I bought a used (but working) transmitter card from ebay for about $8. The seller was wiigotem. I followed this video and it all worked fine. Range restored!
I also bought a used card on ebay from wiigotem for $8. Range before was 1-3ft. Range after was 16-17ft. Chip worked 1 week then range decreased again to 1-3ft. Got a refund for the $8. Purchased two more chips from usa-videogameparts for $9. 1 chip defective. Got a refund for that. The other chip worked great. 30+ft range. Kids are back in business. 3rd time was the charm.
This worked like a charm! I ordered the chip for $11 and got the tri wing screwdriver for $6. This was a huge savings from the $99 plus tax plus shipping to Nintendo. Can't thank you enough!!!
Update: the chipset is now insanely expensive and in most cases more expensive than just getting a replacement gamepad. If you can find one online that just has a broken screen get that and take the chipset out of that.

Totally. Worked. Dude, you are a life saver. I was playing Twilight Princess and couldn't go more than a foot from the console. I bought the tri wing screwdriver because I didn't trust myself not to destroy the screws, but even with that it was a $15 fix rather than $100 to Nintendo. Much appreciated.
Hey I just wanted to thank you so much for this fix. The game pad would not work unless right on top of the wii, rendering about half of our games useless that require interactive use with the pad. The kids have been bummed since this was their Christmas present a couple years back and it crapped out on us right after the warranty expired. I bought the chip from your link, and the electronics repair screwdriver set from Harbor Freight for $4, and it miraculously fixed the problem. My kids think I'm a hero! I started having this problem a couple of weeks ago. I didn't think anything of it at first. But with absolutely no changes to my setup and now my only way to play XCX is to stand a foot directly in front of my Wii U; I thought I'd give this a try. Especially since I did all of the other steps of isolating the Wii U & gamepad, resynching, standing on my head, etc. I wouldn't mind buying a replacement gamepad if they sold one. Thanks for having this option out here. I'll post back once I replace the chip and give it a go.
+IAM EVERYDAYGAMER , I purchased two chips and installed one of them this morning. The first one didn't change the connection drops at all. As soon as I moved away from the console it was as if I didn't change them. I installed the second chip immediately thereafter and so far so good. I can sit anywhere in my living room again and no drops. The range isn't as good as when I first purchased my Wii U, there is no doubt an improvement. Thanks again for having this video out here. This is my first attempt at fixing something like this and it was extremely easy to do with your directions. I'm just glad I bought two chips just in case something like this happened. Hopefully this will last fairly long term. Or until they start selling replacements stateside.

After Ninty told me that it'd take over $100 to fix it, that I'd have to send in BOTH the gamepad and the console, AND have the risk of them wiping the data off of my system (as people have had this happen to them before), I thought I'd have to play Splatoon on my lap the entire time! I just don't understand why Nintendo expects Wii U owners to NEVER have to buy a separate gamepad due to freak accidents or internal damage. They don't sell seperate gamepads at all. Thanks again man, you saved me a good chunk of change!

Thanks for the knowledge! I just replace the chip last night and it's working perfectly. The price has risen considerably in the intervening years, but $30 is still not $125, if you can even can get it at all with the phasing out of the Wii U. Also, I used a small flat head screwdriver for the tri screwdriver, and it worked pretty well, just took a lot longer!
Found this video and saved my Wii U from going into storage. I bought the chip and a set of Tri-wing screwdrivers for under $50 CAD including shipping. 2 day wait on shipping. 20 min fix and I was in business. I really feel the gamepad is a well built piece of hardware and that Nintendo was rushing launch units with less than perfect(faulty) wifi/blutooth chips. End of the day $50 vs $100+ shipping to Nintendo for the fix. Thanks again for the video.
Gonna chime in as another thanks on this one. My Gamepad was mostly dead in the water, losing connection from about a foot and half from the console. I was considering going shopping on Amazon or eBay for a second hand gamepad when I found this video and bought the part on Amazon for about $11 and the Gamepad is now working like a charm.
Question...Is it a better chipset, or are you replacing a faulty one? The issue I have, as most do, is just general range issues. I know it uses 5 ghz and because of that, a wall pretty much cuts you off. Mine works fine right in front of my console and in my bedroom, which in my studio, is right next to the living room separated by an optionally opened curtain. but go around one corner to the bathroom and it gives up. Will this one improve on this? The other alternative I've been researching is to replace one of the two 5 ghz antennas, with a directional external one and have it facing the bathroom. This way one is in the console as it should be, hopefully picking up the signal from the living room and bedroom, and the other will hopefully be picking up the bathroom. Obviously, for warranty reasons, I'd rather tinker with the gamepad, than with the console.
The Wii U antenna for the pad is directional. It's pointing out the front of the console, where Nintendo expected you to be sitting most of the time. They never anticipated use cases, further away from the console.
Thank you so much for this! I was in a bind because I got mine refurbished from GameStop and did not purchase a warranty. Also, because it was used the warranty was already expired from Nintendo... It would have been $115 to ship and fix it!
This works. I ended up ordering a new chip from China, it took about 10 days to arrive. If you happen to read this, order a tri-wing screwdriver from China for 79 cents shipped so you don't have to hassle with the screws, and so you can replace them snugly so they won't fall out. Also nice to use a tiny set of needle nose pliers or similar to pull out the cable that connects the two sides of the controller or you're bound to pull on the tiny wires.
fantastic.....your video just saved me a replacement wiiu. did as instructed and bought a bluetooth card from eBay. repair made a useless console that had to sit on top of the base unit to play into a great console again for £6. really easy to install as well. brilliant. You rock man!! This vid was the key to me fixing my wii u and it worked very well. I also found the ebay sellers to be way expensive compared to the couple of bucks it cost you to buy the chip, so i bought from a seller in china, and had to wait 3 weeks but it only cost around $12. thanks again
This fixed 90% of my issues of not being able to move the controller more than inch away from the base. Only had one warning pop up at around 5ft after an hour and it reconnected quickly. I suspect that is due to other interference as it is around a lot of other electronics. Thanks, great fix for under $20.00 (screw driver was $4)

My son has been having issues with the WII-U gamepad for about the past year or so. In order to use it he had to be less than 5 feet away or it would lose connectivity. I ordered the chip referenced in this video and it worked like a charm! The hardest part was getting the screws out without stripping them. We purchased a eyeglass repair kit from Walgreens for $2 and used the screwdriver from that. It was still a challenge but it worked. Also make sure you keep an eye on the volume slider and the Left and Right buttons when putting it back together to make sure to make sure they are working propery before putting ALL the little screws back in! Order the triwing screwdriver if your gonna do this, if you don't you'll wish you did. The screws are surprisingly tight for being threaded into plastic.

I replaced the chip on my gamepad but it still needs to be right next to the wii U in order to connect. I really think the console itself has an issue as the front USB ports don't work along with the SD card slot, I think something on the console's motherboard has gone bad.

Good solution. Countless people have this problem on the Wii U. Crapy bluetooth chip. But, when the Nintendo Switch is released, I'm going to put my Wii U in the garbage. Even if I replace the bluetooth chip, how long will it last untill it is broken again? And at that time, those chips will be sold out and won't be manufactured again. Too bad, I loved the console.

My fix from the video is still good and my other launch Wiiu is still going strong but I do understand your viewpoint. Lets just hope the Switch doesn't have a problem like this

mine is completely broken. it goes to quickstart, and as soon as I select an account it restarts, goes to the Nintendo screen and says it cant connect, even on top of it.

IAM EVERYDAYGAMER Part arrived today, replaced in less than 5 minutes, works perfectly again. As a side note, I didn't separate the back panel from the bottom. No need to try to pull out that wire. Had enough room to change the part without it. Thanks again!

My issue with original wifi module is range. only works up to 1 foot away from Wii U. I bought this chip, when I replaced it it now gives me the Error code 165 - 3000. Is there a way to get past this in order to sync gamepad to console? My original Chip had the following numbers after the mic-a2 in model : 007-AA0222 where the replacement has:007XWAUL0714. Please advise.

so that one little chip is the issue for the wii u gamepad unstable problems? mine is the 8gb basic and i already sent it in once and now a second time and hopefully after the 4th i get my refurbished deluxe this wojt be an issue anymore.
I was playing nintendo land and in f zero and octopus dance game it froze and shows the range error for a few seconds and then stops. And sometimes the motion controls in f zero just stop. Then i was playing mario kart 8 and in the menu my left stick went wonky and ehen diagnol when i went down and it kind of felt stiff. Should i buy new rubber for my stick or a new stick and should i buy the chip?

@@faiwaka Arr it's ok I have since found out. Inside the Wii u gamepad is the mica2, but the actual console has two chips, micb2 and wina2. Im after the gamepad chip and thought maybe the wina2 would do there as the mica2 is proving very hard to find. Sadly it won't. Anyway good video :o)

Obviously, for warranty reasons, I'd rather tinker with the gamepad, than with the console.
The Wii U antenna for the pad is directional. It's pointing out the front of the console, where Nintendo expected you to be sitting most of the time. They never anticipated use cases, further away from the console.
Thank you so much for this! I was in a bind because I got mine refurbished from GameStop and did not purchase a warranty. Also, because it was used the warranty was already expired from Nintendo... It would have been $115 to ship and fix it!

This works. I ended up ordering a new chip from China, it took about 10 days to arrive. If you happen to read this, order a tri-wing screwdriver from China for 79 cents shipped so you don't have to hassle with the screws, and so you can replace them snugly so they won't fall out. Also nice to use a tiny set of needle nose pliers or similar to pull out the cable that connects the two sides of the controller or you're bound to pull on the tiny wires.
fantastic.....your video just saved me a replacement wiiu. did as instructed and bought a bluetooth card from eBay. repair made a useless console that had to sit on top of the base unit to play into a great console again for £6. really easy to install as well. brilliant. This really does work. Thank you.

You rock man!! This vid was the key to me fixing my wii u and it worked very well. I also found the ebay sellers to be way expensive compared to the couple of bucks it cost you to buy the chip, so i bought from a seller in china, and had to wait 3 weeks but it only cost around $12. thanks again

Worked like a charm. Bought a tool set and a *new* wifi module off of amazon.
This fixed 90% of my issues of not being able to move the controller more than inch away from the base. Only had one warning pop up at around 5ft after an hour and it reconnected quickly. I suspect that is due to other interference as it is around a lot of other electronics. Thanks, great fix for under $20.00 (screw driver was $4)

Thank you for this video! Your fix worked wonders! Before my son couldn't even be more than a foot away until the signal was lost. Now my my son can even play upstairs with the Wii U being downstairs!
My son has been having issues with the WII-U gamepad for about the past year or so. In order to use it he had to be less than 5 feet away or it would lose connectivity. I ordered the chip referenced in this video and it worked like a charm! The hardest part was getting the screws out without stripping them. We purchased a eyeglass repair kit from Walgreens for $2 and used the screwdriver from that. It was still a challenge but it worked. Also make sure you keep an eye on the volume slider and the Left and Right buttons when putting it back together to make sure to make sure they are working propery before putting ALL the little screws back in! Needless to say, my kids will be moving to Xbox/PS once it's time for an upgrade, I am not happy with Nintendo's reaction to the problem (>$100 for a fix that should have been a recall), it's a flawed and sub-par design that fails everyone sooner or later...
It appears to be working now. I will have happy children when they receive their new Wii U games for Christmas next week. Yay!

The screws are surprisingly tight for being threaded into plastic.

I replaced the chip on my gamepad but it still needs to be right next to the wii U in order to connect. I really think the console itself has an issue as the front USB ports don't work along with the SD card slot, I think something on the console's motherboard has gone bad.

Good solution. Countless people have this problem on the Wii U. Crapy bluetooth chip. But, when the Nintendo Switch is released, I'm going to put my Wii U in the garbage. Even if I replace the bluetooth chip, how long will it last untill it is broken again? And at that time, those chips will be sold out and won't be manufactured again. Too bad, I loved the console.

My fix from the video is still good and my other launch Wiiu is still going strong but I do understand your viewpoint. Lets just hope the Switch doesn't have a problem like this

mine is completely broken. it goes to quickstart, and as soon as I select an account it restarts, goes to the Nintendo screen and says it cant connect, even on top of it.

IAM EVERYDAYGAMER Part arrived today, replaced in less than 5 minutes, works perfectly again. As a side note, I didn't separate the back panel from the bottom. No need to try to pull out that wire. Had enough room to change the part without it. Thanks again!

It sounds like its a bad chip. Before you buy another one just redo your steps and make sure you didn't miss anything
My issue with original wifi module is range. only works up to 1 foot away from Wii U. I bought this chip, when I replaced it it now gives me the Error code 165 - 3000. Is there a way to get past this in order to sync gamepad to console? My original Chip had the following numbers after the mic-a2 in model : 007-AA0222 where the replacement has:007XWAUL0714. Please advise.

so that one little chip is the issue for the wii u gamepad unstable problems? mine is the 8gb basic and i already sent it in once and now a second time and hopefully after the 4th i get my refurbished deluxe this wojt be an issue anymore.

I was playing nintendo land and in f zero and octopus dance game it froze and shows the range error for a few seconds and then stops. And sometimes the motion controls in f zero just stop. Then i was playing mario kart 8 and in the menu my left stick went wonky and ehen diagnol when i went down and it kind of felt stiff. Should i buy new rubber for my stick or a new stick and should i buy the chip?

What is the difference between wina2 and mica2 chip for the hand held gamepad?

@@faiwaka Arr it's ok I have since found out. Inside the Wii u gamepad is the mica2, but the actual console has two chips, micb2 and wina2. Im after the gamepad chip and thought maybe the wina2 would do there as the mica2 is proving very hard to find. Sadly it won't.
