this channel took me from reptile enjoyer (going to shops to just look and admire) to a parent of a ball python and beardie! thanks Adam have a great day!
I love to hear it
WOW...I would have loved to have seen that birthing...never know a human to give birth to a reptile...lol..
Same here, been a leopard gecko parent for the past 3 months the care guides are great!
hope you are enjoying your bearded python and ball dragon. good day
@@DNGJustSnakes imagine if reptiles and mammals could hybridize. that would look terrifying🤣
20 years ago I tried keeping venomous, and I realized I just wasn’t enjoying them as much as my kingsnakes, pines, bulls and turtles. I appreciate those who do and the dedicated process to doing it right, but I didn’t enjoy feeling like I’m disarming a bomb to change out a water bowl or clean out poop
No fr part of the fun of a reptile is holding them too and qith venomous you just can't
@@tafaimuck9285 You can, but you definitely shouldn't
@@idiotically-everything are all it takes is one time to slip up.
Caiman lizards are one of my biggest dream animals. Those big difficult enclosures are the best part. You can make a really impressive and stunning enclosure for an incredible and unique lizard. I agree they are a ton of work but I think they're worth it.
Caiman Lizards and Sailfins for me
Sailfin is one of my dream lizards man
Caiman lizard enclosures are my dream. Water and trees? It's a wrap
Where is a good place to see such enclosures? It would be like a mini world lol
@@khighabisi6605 The Jacksonville zoo has a pretty incredible caiman lizard exhibit. It has an amazing planted land area, an arboreal section with wood and living bushes to climb, and a crystal water area stocked with fish and even a freshwater stingray. It's what made me interested in caiman lizards and bioactive enclosures in general.
I've seen an elephant trunk snake selling for $99 at my local pet store. It is really cool, but my first warning sign is that it's wild caught. I don't even know if captive breeding is possible with them, but yeah, I think only someone who is willing to dedicate their time taking care of a peculiar, fully aquatic snake should even own it
I understand the hots reasoning. I guess the same comparison could be made for motorcycles. May not be worth the risk for many people but certainly fun
motorcycles are cool for sure but you're right
I feel like I have a ton more control on my bike than I would over a venomous snake. By that same token , I guess that you really don't have to handle the snake other than to take them out and put them back in when cleaning their enclosure. At any rate , my bike is a lot more fun than having a snake.
@@rottweilerfun9520 I have bikes and snakes and they’re BOTH FUN AS heck
The thing is motorcycles aren’t built to murder you
I have a veild chameleon, she’s a rescue and I love her, besides a few things like plants, cage expenses and bugs, I feel like she relatively easy to take care of if you do all the research and don’t cut corners. Although her set up was pretty costly.
Im with you on that except for the setup. Im a DIY type with the chameleons. Going to places like Lowes and Home Depot. And making the setup. But mine is full screen no glass. But very easy to create.
I feel like all my herp enclosures are becoming expensive bc I keep packing in the plants 🌱 plants 🌱 and more plants 🤑
My veiled chameleon I raised from a baby (2 weeks maybe?) to one year old and I just couldn’t keep doing it, he got sick 3 times throughout the year and I spent hundreds of dollars on medication let alone the set up cost. These animals can definetly be difficult to care for, I really think it just varies on the location temps/humidity they’re being kept and animals themselves
Adam, you've been a tremendous help to me and to many others. Please continue to not compromise your integrity and your sage advice - it's appreciated!
thanks for watching!
I don’t keep reptiles nor do I think I ever will but I love this channel and all the information
so glad you like it
I got my first reptile baby leopard gecko back in February and I love him so much. He has helped me a lot with stuff that has been happening with my life and last month I upgraded to bio active. We’re both so happy now :)
Can’t deny that I can’t resist him begging for food every night after I get from work…
I have so many friends that keep hots. And really, some of them are just amazing. The people AND the snakes. But at my age, I don’t trust my reflexes anymore. And I’ve only gotten into the reptile hobby a couple of years ago. I will say I did do my due diligence and read everything I could find on Milk Snakes. (That’s what I wanted due to their colors!) I have three now and they’re thriving. Beautiful, healthy, glowing. But they’re not going to kill me either. And I’m LOVING my baby White’s Tree Frogs. I finally took the plunge and set up a bioactive tank. So now I’m taking care of frogs, crickets AND isopods and springtails. Lol. But I’m fascinated! I bought IR cameras that start taping when they see movement. And these babies are FUN. They leap across the tank, crawl along their branches, and soak in their tub. And one even trilled at me while I was talking to it. And they are about the size of a quarter. Super super CUTE!
I feel like dogs are seen as worth the hassle because they're such sweet, intelligent, interactive, and personable pets. Plus you can get the right breed for you. So I think that people feel like reptiles with similar or more hassle, just don't have the same amount or even types of pros, but the same amount, if not more cons. In other words, dogs have more appealing redeeming qualities. Though, in my opinion, reptiles are still amazing.
I will spend all day on my dogs, worth it
@@WickensWickedReptiles I'd spend more time on my felines but they're like "naw mom, I wanna be alone now" a lot. Which I completely understand - people wear me out too.
@@WickensWickedReptiles Yeah. I agree. I think that’s why dogs are more popular. People just can’t see the rewards of owning a reptile
I think a top 5 active snakes (or whatever you wanna call it) would be cool. I love snakes but sometimes it's a bit of a bummer when I never see them out of their hides unless I'm handling them
Just a note on elephant trunk snakes. There are two species that are available the banded wart snake and the java wart snake or what most people would call the elephant trunk snake. The banded one is a sea snake mimic or more specifically sea krait but lacks the paddle tail. It is a smaller species that grows to around three feet, I've never seen a really big one. I one time got babies from a tropical fish trans shipper and they were about the size of baby Nerodia water snakes. They were also shipped in water treated with methylene blue which I was told can be toxic to reptiles.. None of these babies survived. I had some adults for awhile and got them feeding. The real PITA is that some populations are freshwater and others are marine. If you keep them in brackish or sea water they need to drink freshwater,. Per Dr. Lilywhite in the wild they drink fresh water from freshwater lenses that form the float on the surface of sea water. So you might have to soak them in freshwater once a week. He also stated that you can induce this species to feed by giving them a "low tide" to simulate fish being stranded when the tide goes out.
What most people think of as the elephant trunk snake is the Java wart snake or Karung in the leather trade. I assume the babies of this species that are available as a by product of the reptile skin trade much like baby Burmese pythons used to be. Females are captured allowed to give birth then skinned. The man thing about this species is they are not small as adults they can grow to about six feet. They seem to grow slow. The babies are pretty easy to get feeding on feeder comet goldfish. Before you go on about you shouldn't feed goldfish. I always reply for the same reason you shouldn't feed crickets, unless you gut load them. You see feeders are starved before shipping so they don't foul the water in shipping. I'm sure that feeders are also well fed in the stores. So you should set up a tank to house feeder fish to fatten them up with high quality goldfish food. I've used tetra flakes and Repashy Super Gold. The latter had an interesting side effect since the carotene content seemed like I was beginning to get "pink elephants". You will also need to get a good aquarium heater since I think this aquatic snakes need water temperatures like discus . A tight fitting lid is needed since these snakes seem like they can levitate! One thing I noticed about java is they don't like salt This can really cause them to want to move elsewhere. I've had two foot snakes climb out of a 30 gallon garbage can with only a few inches of water when my back was turned. If you work with these snakes you will be scratching your head as much as I did on how was this possible. I really need to try to get the ones I have now to accept thawed frozen fish since it would be much cheaper than feeder fish. One more thing you don't want to get bit by one of these they have large teeth like tree boas need long teeth so if just one or two teeth snags a bird or a bait is food. these snakes have long teeth to snag fish. I was bit by a six footer once that left a tooth in my finger, Couple of days later when the finger began to fester Gave it a squeeze and out popped a tooth that was about the same length as my finger's diameter!
You should have added sailfin lizards. Probably the most incredible lizard on the planet but pretty hard to care for and keep alive
Yeah I actually almost got one but after research I just settled for a Rhino Iguana
Mainland retics! I LOVE them but as a reptile keeper, i cant find/afford livestock in my area lol love the channel brother, u taught me a lot! 🤙🏽
Much appreciated!!!
It probably benefits to have a small game license. In some states that covers feral hogs and coyotes and those are pretty decent prey size
We have Caiman Lizards at the aquarium I work out and we have to take them out of the enclosure for 30 minute segments throughout the day to make sure they don’t get bored and try to get out or scratch at the viewing glass
But they are pretty tame and fun to be around
I’ve never had a reptile before and a chameleon was the first one I got. I 100% have been having opposite experiences from everyone’s warning 😂 I love having my Chameleon. It’s been extremely fun and rewarding. I have a piebald female veiled.
Omg same!!!!! I got my translucent veiled girl as a rescue a few months ago and it’s amazing! Beside being pretty expensive with enclosure and plants she’s been extremely awesome to take care of
Im convinced nobody does top 5s better than Adam😂literally dude has a top 5 for everything and counting dude is too creative
I have an Amazon tree boa and I completely agree with you. Great species, and awesome in a display cage, but not the best species for someone who wants a pet to interact with. Especially if one were to start with a hatchling/juvie, maybe if it was an established and hand-tamed adult.
Great thumbnail and video too man, thanks for the content really enjoyed it :)
Love this topic. Thanks for the video.
I can’t help but say something about these awesome intros you always make. Keep up the good work.
Love the TC shirt! Way to support fellow creators! :)
I enjoy all these videos. Adam is very knowledgeable and truly loves reptiles. Also, I respect the way he stresses the need to do ones own research.
Wow never heard of an elephant trunk snake before .. love your channel I’ve learned so much. Thank you x
The bearded dragon just vibing is so cute
Hey adam! loving the content i’m definitely not going to attempt to own any of these herps! Thanks for the info!!!! Subscribed
Cool shirt dude!
Great video as always
I own two chameleons I don't feel like there time consuming...I have bioactive cages for both so clean-up is next none besides trimming dead leafs of the plant's...they are both friendly...I just think reptiles in general are not for everyone an depending on where you get them from plays a huge roll in it to, bigger named pets stores just sell an don't give information on how they should be taken care of, I got mine from a local reptile store an they are always helpful an always great when I need information about an reptile I'm thinking about getting..
Ya he made a terrible video and very misleading, all reptiles require research... he makes it sound like you can keep other species and learn less and give less effort.... stupid.... chameleons are some of the easiest to care for....
This helped out a lot. Thanks.
Glad it helped!
This channel sure is amazing and I love that
Got a blue bar ambilobe panther for my first pet in the 6th grade and he lived a full happy life (6 years). Though I had success with this species due to an insane amount of research, I would only recommend intermediate/advanced keepers with spare cash to keep one. Health complications are also extremely stressful and have a high likelihood of death.
My female panther chameleon doesn’t actually take up more time than my other reptiles. I mist her a couple times a day and throw in a couple dusted bugs for her to hunt, and everything else is automated. I don’t have to clean nearly as much as I do with my reeves turtle and uromastyx, either. However I agree that the enclosure is a pain to setup and if you mess up then you’ll be hit with a $500+ vet bill
I've got a panther too and everything you said is totally accurate. They're not that hard at all if you get them set up right.
Ya hes trippin, he doesnt know much about chameleons lol
Thanks for the cool tips :)
You bet!
I used to keep Trioceros Johnstoni. They dont seem to be common now but they were very neat and seemed to even like to be handled, they always would reach out to me to get on me from their tree. I had a dedicated room. They all ate from my hands and drank from a spray bottle. Miss them a lot. They take work but all of the herps Ive had did.
Love these lists !!!
I love your top 5 vids plz keep doing cool stuff like this you are my favorite reptile RUclipsr just so ya know
11:15 That one hit close to home, as I had to take my service dog into quarantine with me during Covid as a high risk patient. No amount of food toys, learning tricks in the living room, visits to the park and working during a small walk could give her the challenge and outlet similar to working with me all day, in busy stations, trough the city, store in store out, bus in bus out. It was just not the same, and despite my best efforts she became depressed for a while, just like many other service dogs out there. It was really sad, especially not being able to help/provide her what she needed. We did get into a new rittem though eventually and she did better, but I will never forget the joy she had when she finally was able to work properly again.
I love your channel it is so entertaining. Are you ever considering doing a fire skink guide?
Amazon tree boas are rewarding to have, but I do understand your take on them. They're display animals with interesting different personalities. And yes, they do love to bite lol, it's what makes them so charming.
I can completely see where your coming from regarding venomous snakes, especially when your talking about keeping species that are not native to your area/hospitals unlikely to have antivenom and so 99% of folks shouldn’t keep them
That being said I have a room full of them and by far the most dangerous animal related thing I do is help break in horses.... no antivenom for a broken back 🤷🏽♂️😂
horse are crazy
@@WickensWickedReptiles a horse having a bad day might as well be a dinosaur
Thanks so much for making this. I have a 6-foot tall acrylic hex aquarium (yes really) that I bought years ago, immediately discovered how hard it is to keep fish in it without a diver suit, so I cut a nice cathedral door in the middle and made it a vertical terrarium. I had fish in the bottom 1/3 (below the bottom of the door, about 20 gallons) and tree frogs in the rest, with vines and platforms. But then I let it go for various reasons and it has just sat in the corner of our current home for almost 8 years.
Lately I've been hankering to mess with it again, but kept stalling because I couldn't decide what to do this time: could set it up like before since that worked well, OR maybe go a whole other direction: small birds like parakeets or finches. And then I realized I COULD cut a couple more walls and install screens or just drill lots of holes, and finally have a panther chameleon like I've wanted for 30 years or more.
But thanks to this video, I realize that even with the pimp-est chameleon habitat all set up, the amount of daily care and maintenance does not sound fun at all. And knowing my luck, I would end up with a super skittish and/or aggressive chameleon. I know there's a fairly high likelihood of that already, and I'm the person who wound up with the one skittish and aggressive ball python in the world (yes really). And come to think of it, birds are noisy. My best track record is with fish and tree frogs (White's in particular, god I love those guys). So the choice is pretty clear. Fish/frog palace sequel.
I live in Louisiana, and someone locally keeps a breeding group of them outside basically. It was wonderful to see.
I've got a panther chameleon (nosy mitsio)
i would say without the right advise they are very challenging to work with , but with right knowledge I find it quite fine, I got my boy cause I needed my mind directed to something more after some life issues , plus was always a dream to keep .
Knowing the things I know now I'd still get a chameleon, my doofus is very tame easy going, cup feeds or eats bugs that I place on plants, I've spent quite bit on his house, still need more plants and mistking yes he'll only live 5-7 years .but I wouldn't go back !
If I wanted a cuddly pet I'd get a guinea pigs again
Great video 👍
thanks!
Perfect video as always 😜
Despite the danger, difficulty, and hard work that goes into keeping hots, they have always fascinated me and i will definitely be keeping some when i gain enough time and experience, i love them too much
So glad I came across this channel. I love reptiles and I want to get a chameleon one day
I recommend Neptune the Chameleon for all your research!
I’ve been watching this channel for a long time dreaming I would be able to get a reptile one day and now I finally have a little fire skink!
Congratulations ! Skinks are so cool !
@@rottweilerfun9520 yes and they are so much easier to keep than most other reptiles,I have two five lined skinks and they are great.
@@bugloverspiderlover8490 , There are five lined skinks in my yard. There are a couple that I hand feed along with Broadhead Skinks. I love those little lizards , the two 5 lined that come around are females and they are really funny, they have a lot of personality.
Brian B. has caiman lizards, always thought how much they really do look like a dinosaur in the face. As always, great mini class with new things to learn and consider. Thank you!
Hi love everything you do♥️ Your the influencer who got me in Reptiles and Amphibians ♥️🥰😎
ADAM! Could you plz do a ring neck snake care guide, I would really appreciate it and I’m also thinking about getting one, anyways love your videos and I’ve learned ALOT from your channel but a ring neck snake care guide would be nice, and their a little underrated.
I would love to see you do a video about top 5 morphs of each kind of reptile like top 5 ball python morph top 5 leopard gecko morph and stuff in that nature
This was an accurate list. I need to have species that are easy to care for because some days are so busy I can only have time for the essentials.
what reptiles do you think aren't worth the hassle?
Marine iguanas
@@javistrangepets7882 I don’t think anyone has ever domestically owned a marine iguana, it’s impossible
Crocodilians
Green anacondas; they're semi-aquatic giant constrictors.
Dragon snake s thay are amazing but most end up dieing lol 😂 I still would love one if was not wildcort and has nothing rong with it
I'm determined to have a caiman lizard one day, the wild enclosure build is def part of the fun, but I almost wish they were less attainable. Fact is 80% of people who get caiman lizards are in no way prepared for them or what they need at full size. Good list, my man!
Pro Tip for caiman lizards I had done was converting a large hydroponic grow tent into a enclosure using chicken wire fence for covering the sides. Works great and was super cheap also works for monitors. Mine love these as enclosures
Or dont be cheap and ghetto and get a proper enclosure for the animal, or even better dont get those types of animals if money for enclosures is a worry
@@deekay1310 cheap and ghetto😂 I guarantee you it’s got more money and time put into it then anything reptile related you own. You must not know i have a basement and second living area built off my home just for reptiles that’s basically zoo quality
Great video as always. You should do a Q&A video.
I will soon!!
I agree with everything you said.
I can't sleep so if any of my above comments bother you tell me I'll remove them.
This list is exactly my list of nopes too, I agree!! Camens and Tegus are grail animals for me, but not until I have the mentioned tons of time and money
I don't keep hot reptiles, but have found that hot arachnids have actually been a lot of fun to keep. With proper safety pro-cations that is.
oh for sure!
Have you done a video yet on Top Five Boring (i.e. common) Reptiles and Five More Interesting Alternatives? That could be fun!
I sure have!
I have a veiled chameleon that loves attention. He can eat outta hand or bowl. He also loves to be held, though he loves to explore and end on our heads lol
Cool video Adam! What are your thoughts on Tentacled Snakes?
Love em but same as the trunk snakes
Been keeping and breeding chameleons for 18 years and you're right they need some more background research before buying one. But well worth the time
no doubt eh
Totally on point with this video. 👌🏻
thanks for watching!
@@WickensWickedReptiles Of course. Always love your videos.
I have a green tree python, similar to tree boas in fragility, especially since i got her as a hatchling. I totally agree in that in most cases arboreal snakes are a lot more work than terrestrial ones, but if you are willing to put in the research and time to socialize the animal, they are totally worth it!
Someday I will start my own reptile collection, I watch your videos and I also own a bearded dragon, very easy reptile. Thank you for educating other people about their reptiles.
As a Panther chameleon owner and hobby breeder (I'm an artist and they live in my studio) I agree owning them is not for everyone. I obviously love them, they can become extremely "friendly" if you build trust with them. My adults beg to come out because they know I am the bringer of food and their portable tree that leads to sun and exploration lol.
If you get their system automated it becomes almost as easy as other reptiles and amphibs, but all this does take more time and you have to want to do it. I always make sure my adopters know exactly what they are getting into. Definitely have to get used to them living relatively short lifespans too :(
well said!
Risk tolerance varies and exactly how risky it is changes; I've had some health issues and injuries and hots are effectively off the table for me (so are giants). I don't need my shoulder or back going out while I'm handling a hot or a giant. Miss them both but...they got riskier for me given my health issues.
Nice video great work
Thank you very much!
“Then get a tegu”
*sobs in Floridian*
Thanks for the video! Can you do one on the best primary classroom lizard?
If you have the room, a bearded dragon would probably be my first recommendation. They’re diurnal, long lived, tolerate handling very well, and don’t seem to dislike people. I’d keep mine in my classroom in a heartbeat if I could fit a 4 foot tank in there! Small tortoises like Russian or Greek torts are also great ideas… but again, space is an issue, because you need a sizable tortoise table. I have no experience with snakes, so I can’t really comment on them. My personal classroom pet is a leopard gecko, but understand that they are cathemeral and may sleep or hide a great deal of the time. I just discovered Schneider’s Skinks, which I found to be puppy dog tame even though the ones I met at a reptile expo didn’t know me… but most are wild caught, which bothers me. Watch Clint’s Reptiles video about the best pet reptiles for kids… that will give you a pretty good idea of species to consider. Good luck!
Oh, and before you add a reptile to your class…. Are you going to be able to bring it home or duplicate its hab at home for care during breaks? That’s an issue I really needed to think about, as they turn off the heat in my building over breaks. I’m not a fan of sending class pets home with students… too much can happen… so think on that, too.
I have never even heard of an Elephant Trunk snake before! I think that most aquatic or water loving reptiles are high maintenance. The top of the list would be a marine iguana, a sea snakes, and even fly river turtles. (Of course I don't know how popular they are in the hobby, I just know it would be tricky to keep them.) Just the size of a proper enclosure makes them prohibitive for a lot of people. My rental insurance doesn't cover installing a pond in the middle of my apartment. 😉
How hilarious ur shirt Adam i got his videos in the que next lol
I have an Amazon tree boa, and you're right. This is really a display item. They are beautiful and very colorful, but they are for display only. Mine is Yellow and she is gorgeous. I don't handle her, she doesn't come out (often) unless I need to clean the enclosure.
love your videos
thank you!
Great video! While I agree with most of it, after encountering several wild Amazon tree boas, I just can’t agree they are angry. Sure maybe don’t like being handled and try to get away a lot, but out of the many I have seen in the wild, being quick to bite doesn’t really seem to be their thing.
Interesting picks
Back maybe 8 or 9 years ago, my parents had some snakes. I loved them, but (for reasons I don't exactly remember) they got out of the hobby. A week ago I bought my first snake since, a Kenyan sand boa, thanks to this channel.

NEED HELP. Hi there how are you? I love your videos and trust your information and advice you give. Thats what brings me here, I am going to purchase my first gecko and I have done a tonne of research, I believe I have the terrarium good but im still confused about feeding, I read alot about gut loading and dusting their food, do you do that with every feed? Also how often do YOU feed? I cant do crickets bc I live in a tiny town so I would have to always get them shipped so I will produce my own worms. I want to make sure I do the best I can for my new friend. Thank you for reading :)
Are there plans on doing any more turtle/tortious videos? It seems like its been quite awhile since you have done one.
Elephant Trunk Snakes? That's a new one for me! 😌
I got a veiled chameleon and I admit despite all the research I did I was not completely prepared for how much work it is.
Though I adapted quickly, I had to spend way more money as well to get extra things to make sure to keep humidity and things at a good spot constantly. Mine also will only eat by tongs.
They are more of a look don’t touch pet.
Hey Adam, I was wondering if you have a recommendation for a cheap cage for a beardie if so please let me know because I plan on getting one soon
That caiman liz was GORGEOUS!
sure is!
My ball python Debbie has benefitted and grown wonderfully thanks I part to your channel. I thank you, and Debbie thanks you as well.
Elephant trunk snake story. Wayyyy back in the mid-late 80s I worked at a pet store. This snake was brought in as a "fresh water snake", kept with arawanna (spelling?) , Oscar's and a massive Pleco.
Snake escaped. 10 days later I'm at the feeder fish tank when he casually (and sandpapery grippy hold) wraps my ankle, his snoot first. My scream was Mach 1. But he was a sweetheart. Just wanted back into the water. So weird feeling though.
That's funny 😄
Amazon tree boas are incredible in my opinion and very misunderstood. They are definitely not as fragile as people believe, the babies can be tiny but it is possible to handle them without issues. Their tails are incredibly strong and they have to be as they mostly live in trees.
Every amazon I've had has been tolerant of handling (some more so than others) and I've never had an aggressive one; just defensive. once you understand them; it gets less intimidating. They are a lot of fun and very rewarding.
We need a tegu update Adam!!! Also can you keep hot snakes in canada? bc in Alberta you can’t.
If I win the lottery, I'm getting a caiman lizard. Which means I will probably never have one, but I've loved them ever since I saw Thorn on Clint's reptiles. I especially love their dark eyes.
For the caiman lizard did you take the video bc I didn’t see any credits also what your upload schedule
Love the Tarantula Collective shirt.
I had a yellow phase Amazon tree boa. It was definitely my feistiest boa I had.
Very interesting snake. I had never heard of these elephant trunk snakes.
I have never seen or heard of an elephant trunk snake 😳😳 those r wild looking!
You are one of the best RUclips’s I have ever Seen. By the way I am getting a gecko of my own and can’t decide on what to get a Leopard gecko or a Crested gecko. What do you think I should get? I think a crested gecko🦎🤔😛👍
Funny thing is, all the animals listed here are some of my dream animals!! But i will not get any of them unless I’m fit to properly care for them, so dont worry!! 😊
