    My actual Granny used to have all her grandkids make granny squares and she'd stitch them all together to make beautiful crocheted quilts that she'd sell at fairs. It's a lovely memory, but could also be considered a sweatshop, if you think about it long enough.

      This is my Mom; although I’m trying to teach her knitting instead. Although in her case, it was her knitting loosely, while I’m a tight knitter. She grew quite alarmed at several points, lol. She’s very nervous she won’t be able to understand the knitting process, or if we try crocheting, that she won’t get that
      But this is a woman who raised two kids and kept a house while being chronically ill and running a business. She helped take down a corrupt mayor in her days of investigative journalism. She flew across country after graduating at 17 and began her college career as the liaison between the head of the college and the student body. She turned a tray of gifted cloisonné into a kiosk, into a store, into a tanning place, into a shoe store, into a Hallmark store, into two Hallmark Gold Crowne stores. She got my Dad through medical school and earned enough for their first, then second house. She got into MENSA and then dropped out only because the dues were too expansive for what you got for it (and most of the people she met at meetings had very bad and snotty attitudes). She dealt with cancer pain for a year without extra medication.
      She has done so much. She is not going to be overcome by knitting. Even if she is a little dyslexic and will hold her yarn in the wrong hand when I say, “Now hold your yarn in your left hand while casting on.” 😅

      @@s_camp Think of a piece of regular fabric. It's got thousands upon thousands of tiny holes, but we don't think of it as having holes because that's just how the thread fits together. But if the fabric had buttonholes, then you'd say "this has holes." Since yarn is so much larger than thread the spaces between the fibers are a lot more noticeable, but that doesn't really make them holes. I knew what Peter was talking about, but as a crocheter I completely understand Mrs. Brown's confusion. The piece she was working on didn't have any holes.

    Crocheting songs, like how sailors have shanties to get them through tedious things. 🤣 Although!!! There’s a rather graphic way to remember the knitting steps!
    Stab the stomach,
    Strangle the victim (although it doesn’t need to be tight)
    Scoop out the guts
    Dump the body.
    When I first heard it, it was “flee the scene,” rather than “dump the body,” but that step involves moving a stitch from your working needle to the other needle, and people usually flee the scene without carrying anything extra. So I feel “dump the body,” is more accurate in this little metaphor. 😅
    Casting on also has a little memorizing technique, one I came up with for my Mom, and it involves sneaking up behind the victim, getting inside their reach, and getting away Scott free. So that’s a fun little morbid mantra. 😂
    There are other little chants to remember the steps, but honestly, I never remembered them well. For some reason the morbid nature of these stick better in my brain! Even my pretty sheltered mother admits she remembers these better, disturbing as they may be.
    Then there’s also the fact that, “I think I came into knitting because it’s one of the only socially acceptable forms of stabbing we have today.” 😇

    For Mrs Brown: if you think you're having an issue, as a long time knitter and crocheter, it seems to me that you may be holding your working yarn a little too taught, that's would be why you have to stop and adjust your stitches. That or you may be using a hook that is a gauge too small. But you looked like you were doing just fine to me.

    • @TheMichigami
      @TheMichigami 4 года назад +5

      i think that's a big part of the minor problem she was having. its much easier to run the yarn up from the bottom back by holding it between the pinky and last finger then across the palm-side of the fingers and around the index/pointer finger to hold it for working and guiding, then you can adjust the tension easily just by adjusting pinky position to tighten the gap if needed and the yarn slides through between instead of trapping the finger like hers kept doing. is seems she's also stopping to untangle herself and let more yarn out to work with because the yarn is trapping her as she works from the loop on her fingers tightening around her and throwing the stitch gauge off, making things a bit uneven and wavy. otherwise she was doing ok.

    • @TheOGWhovianMaster
      @TheOGWhovianMaster 4 года назад +7

      To me, it looked like she was holding it and working backward, but I learned from a leftie, so I'm probably the one who does it backward xD

    • @haleyp898
      @haleyp898 4 года назад +9

      It's that double loop around the pinky. It's holding the tension too tight. One loop around the pinky allows for much better control of tension. Plus, you actually need way less tension than you think for things to come out best. I am constantly struggling with tension because I want to pull the yarn taught, but it really works best with a bit of slack (this is why I can't knit; knitting is much less forgiving of high tension than crochet).

    • @SunflowerSpotlight
      @SunflowerSpotlight 4 года назад +4

      I’m teaching my mother to knit while she’s stuck at home (she has cancer so it’s a scary time, having something to keep her hands occupied will help I think), and I have to be so careful about my tensioning! I’m pretty new to this myself and am a tight knitter. So much so that I prefer using a larger gauge needle!
      If the knitting classes don’t work, I may start her on crocheting. We both want to make scarves and beanies, mittens, socks, and blankets, for both the homeless population and various crisis shelters, so if we’re to learn one, it seems knitting is preferable to crocheting, but until I can get a real teacher for us, it’s better than her hands sitting empty and her mind on her worry.
      I think she’d also like to learn enough to make some baby blankets, so if things don’t go the way we’d like, her grandkids will have mementos from her. It’s just speculation, because she tries to only speak positively, but I’m thinking it’s part of her sudden interest.

    A series of questions that will feel like a stream of consciousness incoming:
    Do you still have any of that coiled airhose left from when you fixed that vacuum table?
    If so, would resin cure inside it?
    Would it be super fragile if you were to cut the hose off the outside?
    Do you also think it would look really cool as the stem of a Lamp if you were to dye the resin a couple of different colours?
    Yes, isolation has ruined my social skills, even the internet ones.

    • @SunflowerSpotlight

      Yes! I go back to them too! I grew up with the Jim Dale version, and first listened when I had pneumonia and was too weak to hold a book. Since then, audiobooks have been such a blessing for me!
      Now that my mom has cancer, I’ve been getting her and my dad into audiobooks. It’s helpful to take up that empty space where worry likes to reside. And! Since I’ve been subscribed for about 12 years, since before Amazon bought them, and i was subscribed under their old system, I get two credits a month and can send them books if I don’t use both credits that month. It’s very handy!
      I took up knitting last year, and between that and doing puzzles during lockdown, I’ve listened to... I think 9-10 audiobooks since January. It’s one of my main regrets about our lifespans, that there are so many wonderful books we won’t get to read.
      One slight suggestion, since you’re already an Audible member or user, you might write down the RUclipsrs you watch who have sponsorships. I send an email about once a year, letting them know the people who had great ads for them, but whose codes I couldn’t use because I’m already a member. I think... it may not help at all, but maybe if they see likely users watch that content, they’ll be more likely to continue being sponsors for the RUclipsrs you want to support. It’s just a thought.
      Also, awesome lipstick and glasses in your Pfp. Dang, girl! 😅
