MODERN BUILDS
Hi, My name is Mike Montgomery and I'm a MAKER; a designer, builder, and full-time content creator. Accessibility is my focus with Modern Builds, not simply accessibility of designs, but accessibility in materials, information, and projects themselves. I've focused on creating furniture and DIY projects that are simple enough that any beginner maker can accomplish, yet interesting enough that any expert might be inspired. Building and making is becoming less and less of an exclusive hobby and profession. My goal is to reduce that separation even further. - Хобби
I agree with everyone else: this whole thing looks slapped together. Between the pieced together wallpaper on the walls, the tired wood cabinets, and the wallpaper-covered counter there's a LOT of room for improvement in this build!
It's a flipper. He's going to sell it after making content for RUclips. It's a half ass job.
Or you can start your own RUclips channel and show everyone how its done.
Just because it's "a flipper" doesn't mean it has to sacrifice function for form. He's going to pawn this off on someone who's going to have to do it over immediately. So then why do it at all? Integrity, guys...
This reminded me of those landlords that paint over screws and put silicone on everything and they say the apt was just remodeled and everything in there is new, this was a BIG letdown, looks cheap and trashy.
Yeah. He used to make nice stuff. But it seems like the more subs people get, the more they just do it for the views and sponsers.
On a budget don’t means bad finishing
The first episode made me excited for this series but this one was a big letdown.
These drawers don't look good, even with the brass hardware! 😅
It’s so ugly sometimes I wish he get help with decor cause a lot of his shi be so ugly and I’m being honest
Could've easily kept the original boxes and DIY'd some new fronts. That plus a lighter stain or even paint would've only added 2-3 days to the project and would come out looking way better.
Please paint those cabinets lol
I know it's on a budget, but the wood cabinets don't look well. Maybe patching and painting them could be much forgiving and it would feel much fresher
I feel like this is a project that he should've invested a bit more time and effort into. It really seems like he's just trying to make some cheap and easy content rather than really renovating the trailer. A real renovation would likely swap the bedroom to the back and put a smaller more modern condensed bathroom on one of the sides. These two tiny beds don't make much sense in a modern trailer.
I also dislike the cabinets, I feel like they deserve new doors and new paint. I get why he isn’t doing that but it’s unfortunate to see, it would’ve turned out much better if he did a bit more work.
@@leviharris413 Minimum input for maximum return, it's the basic RUclips influencer formula.
I don't like to leave negative comments in normal circumstances, but I think it's fair to say you really phoned it in on this episode.
Painting some or all of the cabinets green or grey would definitely give it a more modern look then the wood. Plus it would look amazing with the new hardware, wallpaper, flooring and gold accents.
I usually dig your work, but man, the counter tops looked terrible. Also the wallpaper pattern not matching would trigger my OCD. Still, I'm looking forward to the house flip project.
Why do y’all feel the need to tell him what y’all think . This is HIS home flip you ain’t supposed to “like” it. You’re supposed to know how to “do” it 🙄
Lmfao
@@Dontletthemchangeyou well you are meant to like it thats the whole point of recording it and why are you getting so mad get a life
@@theonetheonlygod1351 because it’s his trailer. None of the people that are trashing on his trailer are ever going to step foot into it, so why are YOU guys so worried about it lol.
@@srtoscar6961 how am i worried about it you are just being a prick
Wallpaper on a countertop?
That will not last long.
Plenty of people have done it inside their homes and it actually does hold up pretty well.
@@freckledspeckled5406 Plenty of people? Just shows that plenty of people have no taste.
Does not mean it will hold up over time.
Did the countertops of my daughter's Ikea playing kitchen... worked great! Wouldn't use it in my own kitchen..
@@CdeL-qs7cy A toy kitchen is not real. So that's a dfferent.
@@saulgoodman2018 there’s literally review videos of it months and years later and it does hold up better than you’re thinking, especially in a trailer you wouldn’t use every day. Just because some people’s taste doesn’t align with yours doesn’t mean it’s wrong. That’s kind of how opinions work😂
Bro, those countertops. Most ridiculous thing I have seen in a long time.
how come you didnt use the bus you remodled insted of buying this trailer?
Mate, I know this a temporary home but loads of the stuff you have done so far looks kinda shonky. Cabinets look rough still, vinyl looks awful and the mix and match colors and styles is not my thing. I still enjoy your content and enthusiasm!
I personally like that you kept the wood cabinets, it keeps the airstream cozy and warm feeling. Green or grey would be too stark in my opinion. Excited to see the end result.
After watching this “airstream” resto I’m thinking I’ll tidy up an old VW Golf and title it “PORSCHE 911 DIY BUDGET MID CENTURY RESTORATION”
I agree with most people in the comments, tbh the airstream looked better before the Reno. The cabinet color, vinyl counter tops, pieced together wallpaper, and the gold hardware with the outdated cabinets 🤢,🤮 and 🤮
It's not even an Airstream. It's a knockoff....Which I'm still not overly jazzed about. At least he openly admitted in the first episode he was calling it one just for the clickbait...
And what happened to that school bus?
Haha I think we're all wondering the same thing
I believe he said in one of his last videos of that series that it would be parked behind his house in Joshua Tree and would be used as a guest house.
@@thesevendays. what's the point of a school bus conversion if you don't plan on moving it? It would be way cheaper to do a seacan (or shipping) conversion.
My only worry is having vinyl on the countertop. Setting a hot pot from the stove on it might make it melt or burn. Otherwise I like all the upgrades.
Tons of people do it on the counters inside. Additionally, most other countertops aren’t heat resistant either. Unless you get marble or granite, everything else is not heat resistant (quartz, Formica, composite, butcher block)
@@freckledspeckled5406 Resopal and other plastic countertops are heatresistent up to 180°C.
But this vinyl stick on film fits to the rest of the whole built.
@@freckledspeckled5406 If tons of people jumps off a bridge. Does that mean that it 's a good idea?
@@manuellutgens3558 uhh not sure where you got that data but that’s definitely not true. They’re literally plastic. They’ll get heat rings, burn marks, melted spots; you name it. Had quartz countertops in our apartment and if you washed a pan with too hot of water and then set it on the counter to dry, it left a permanent heat ring.
The only heat resistant/proof counters are marble, granite, or other stone.
@@freckledspeckled5406 It‘s what the manufacturer claim.
Had them in the kitchen of my first appartment and they never showed issues caused by heat. Ofc cutting without cutting board wasn’t playing well with them.
After watching many bright, asthetically pleasing trailer upgrades (hello Mr.Kate), I guess I don't enjoy rushed jobs on a budget. I'm spoiled!
I love your videos and the work you do. Best editing and narration and the perfect length. Like all the electric fixtures and that you are trying to keep the MCM theme. I have to say the cabinets are not one of my favorites. Get that you wanted to use the refinish product and the cabinets look decent from a distance but up close not so much. I know you want to make this a quick flip but truly stripping the cabinets and leaving the wood or even painting them would be more "super pro". Finally I like the peel n stick wallpaper but the vinyl countertop sucks. I was looking forward to you doing the epoxy and I am sure they would hold up better. It starting to look like you are putting lipstick on a pig. Cheap and easy does not fill the bill, Just my opinion and I will certainly keep watching.
I think the negative commenters are missing the point. This is clearly meant to be a quick and dirty renovation just to serve as housing during the main renovation. With that purpose in mind, he nailed it.
I like the look of the trailer. As long as you like the finished product, that is all that matters, since you are going to be the one living there. :)
hes not living in it, its a cheap upgrade to sell to some sucker
Put some of your floral wallpaper under the base of the cabinets. It's very dingy/dirty.
Usually a fan of your work... But those counter tops and wallpaper work 🫣😬 sheeeesh
hairdryer works like magic with vinyl wrap, you can shrink it or stretchit
I’m so excited to see this episode- I’ve been waiting!!!! Great job - I love it - can’t wait to see the ext video😃😃
Feel bad writing it..but not feeling this one. The wallpaper has many mismatches the wrap on the worktops looked terrible on the edges. I think your way better than the work you’ve done on this one. Sorry
I love this project!
If you use the vinyl material you did for countertops again. A hair dryer or heat gun is your best friend at any edge where round or square! I learned this the hard way. You’ll also find it adheres to the service better with a heat source. I’m glad to see a bigger you tuber try this out. Thanks for doing some of these experiments
New and exciting, going thought the whole process from start to finish is inspiring
Great video
Hey Mike, this already looks good but for my selfish request I would like another series where you re-flip this with all new custom built-in furniture. Love your videos and simplicity for flips.
Watched my team get demolished last night 7-0, so I came to modern builds to relax and my OCD is off the charts 😩
Cabinets still look horrible, I hope you do something about that
Not gonna lie, I thought I'd be wrapping up this project in EP 2, but there was more than I expected to tackle still, so I'll be doing an EP 3 where I get the bathroom functional and all of the finishing touches / decor complete! Thanks for following along!! next video will be out soon!
Why didn’t you match up the stick on wall paper
And no offence but the grey brown and gold doesn’t really match
The cabinets are a Noooooo. Get some paint man, it's not expensive. 🤢🤢
@@katiehnewman agreed
😂
“It was helpful to remind myself to be patient in this process”. *Refuses to wait a week for the epoxy countertop project, insists on using peel and stick* Lol
I know being a full time RUclips content creator can be so draining. I can see that on this build maybe you were feeling that, but I hope in future projects you are freer to reach deep within for the innovation, creativity, and originality that draws people to your channel. Wish you the best! :)
You should have kept the original design for the trim.
Woah man. Vinyl wrapped countertops? Really.... Interesting peeling and laying technique. Not sure I'm liking this part. Just seemed really shoddy and poorly done compared to the other stuff.
I must say, you are very easily satisfied! The wallpaper simply pasted over each other without paying attention to the motif matching. Your kitchen worktop really pulls on nothing! You can see everywhere on the edges and curves that it is glued, you should have waited a week for your epoxy!!! And then there are so many things that really don't attract anything....
I saw the bus too, you really love cutting corners and don't seem to be getting better at it.
If you pause the video the stick and peel in the bedroom looks awfull. Not stuck properly, lifting up, going over nail or screws.
Also degrease your walls first. Not to mention you didn't line anything up.
Have you ever considered doing a broken tile mosaic? Seems right up your ally as it's a cheap/quick/creative way to reuse old material but freshen up a space
After the final episode you should give a tour and travel to test it
Honestly i prefer a warmer temperature light, than those white led lights 😬
There's a middle ground. 4000k is cool white. The original ones were far too warm and dingy looking, but the new ones are far too cool, it looks stark and clinical. I'd have gone with 3000k LEDs
Should use Stone Coat Countertops epoxy for the countertops. Far more durable and you can get any look you want.
A year late ... oh well 🤷♀️I like the cabinets, and I like the flooring. I like the peel and stick wallpaper and that he used two different patterns. His choices make it look a bit like someone's home when everything isn't matchy-matchy because most people can't afford to follow the trends. He said during the first video that he's going to live in it while he flips a house. It will be just fine for that. He isn't designing a trendy RV, all gray with white shaker cabinets, fortuneately. Good job!
It's looking better and better, Mike. This is going to be one sweet trailer. Thanks for sharing the video.😀😀
@14.49, the wallpaper is already peeling off
You should paint the Flying Tigers nose art on that thing!
Man, I don’t think these people understand you’re on a budget and a time crunch. I think this looks great for probably a few days flip with maybe $1000 investment. You just needed somewhere to stay that’s tolerable so you can start on the house. I like what you’ve done and no sense in wasting time and money on something that you’ll probably redo after the house. Nice job!! Stoked for episode 3!
Knobs and wallpaper are definitely not midcentury modern, no matter how many times you call them that.
Great job! I can't wait to see what you do with that bathroom!
Are you worried about condensation with the wallpaper ?
Should be concerned about condensation. Especially if the propane heater is in good enough shape to be used. I lived in an "83 Avion 2 winters and condensation can be an issue. I used an electric infrared heater for heat. Was not going to chance a problem with an older propane heater. I always had a lot of condensation on the windows. I also ran a dehumidifier when the humidity was up over 50%.
So, are you going to sell this when you are finished with the home reno?
What happened to the bus
Awesome videos sorry I’m soo late
forget everyone else. they forget that the goal is to have a place to comfortably live until you finish the house and can go back home lmao.
very cool I will use this I'm trailer renovation project, i would suggest just use black trim around your mirrors, using the wallpaper is very old looking
I know you are getting a lot of hat on this one. Overall, the camper looks 100x better. However, you did rush this project a bit. These videos can get as many views as a house reno video, so I can see peoples disappointment. I still enjoyed the video. Constructive critique is always good. Hope you find it that way.
Too rushed with the counter tops especially, vinyl, what? But so far you've changed out a lot which was an improvement, like the lights. Is the sink color the same as the stove top? Didn't look like it, not sure about two colors in close proximity of each other. Let's see what #3 changes so I'm done now .
You did good bro. People don’t realize the time limit and budget you got to make something that works. However, in all honesty you could have saved lot of time by just painting all the walls and countertops. I understand that might be too simple for you. The wallpaper and vinyl wrap just lot of work to cut 😅 I also personally don’t like he design lol
How much it costs bro?
I'm a 61 year old granny who is turning a 12x32 shed Into a tiny house. I have learned so much from watching you. ❤ from Tennessee!!!
wall pappers are like stickers...for lazy people who doesnt like to paint?
i rather paint than put up wall papers?
How do I get part 3
Nice project-but would suggest painting the cupboards a different colour. The brown is not looking good.
There’s an episode 3! Yay!
I really wish you would have painted those cabinets or replaced the veneers.
What did happen to the school bus?
I understand u are on a budget.. but i think the cabinets should have been sanded and painted to complement those brass hardware. I would have used a laminate countertop instead of the contact paper and done a different shade of paint on the walls instead of wallpaper. But it looks better than it did before you started it
super shocked to see this low of a low level of standards, legit looks like a high school stoner did this with they vinyl wrapping and whatever drawer pulls he could muster that happened to match.
Please tell me you'll add solar panels and a water collection system
I have a friend who is remodeling her Airstream. Big project! The designer sent her Shetch up files. I'm helping her with. The file was drawn in 3d, and I need assistance with shooting interior elevations in a 3d drawing. How do I do this in AutoCAD? I imported the file into AutoCAD.
Looking good. I hope you’re painting under the upper cabinets, that’s looking a little rough there.
I think these comments forget why he's making this airstream He's going to live in it to do his renovations and if you've been watching how he lives this looks exactly how he would do it....🤦🏾♂️ Y'all just want to be rude and none of y'all actually never did any renovations before 🙄
Loved your creativity, and unique word work in the past. Was excited to see the build for this, but honestly feels like you are in a rush to get someone living in it so you can have income, hurts a little.
What happened to the bus?
Great job!
Yay finally 🙏
I'd paint those cabinets.Something other than all the stained cheap wood .
Those things were made with white plastic, originally. It's just that plastic yellows over time. LOL.
Hate the color of storages, can you make a new color?
11:38 y not add switches
Lol why is everyone hating. He's just using this space while he works on the house flip project. He's just trying to clean it up as quick and as cheap as possible.
For real. I can understand if this was a house he was flipping or even renting out, but it's just a temporary set up. Although he's not really emphasizing it, this is showing what can be done when budgets and timelines are tight. Given those constraints I think he's doing fine with salvaging what he can
But as a big-time “build” RUclipsr with millions of subs this just isn’t acceptable. Those cabinets and the vinyl countertops were horrific. Looked like he was trying to speed run this whole build.
I guess it’s fine if he’s okay living there but I can guarantee you no one with eyesight is going to buy that trailer after seeing the inside.
First🎉❤
I'm just here for the comments.
Peel and stick counter tops?!!! LOL! That's a big NO for me. I get you couldn't get your preferred epoxy materials, but I would have waited. Peel and stick on countertops in a kitchen will last about as long as a high schooler's virginity pledge. I think you mis-dialed 1-800-SUPERPRO!
✨✨🌟✨✨💫😎
I'm a big fan of your videos but I feel like this series is a bit of a joke to push content out 🤷🏽♂️
this is such a cool idea, good job mike
I feel like you need a positive comment haha, did people not hear that your epoxy shipment was delayed?? 😂 people cover their counters all the time in their own real kitchens, I’m sure it will be fine in an RV and easy to replace down the line if it’s not. It’s looking great! I think people aren’t understanding that you’re about to put a ton of time, energy and money into your flip and this just needs to be a quick, inexpensive upgrade to make it more comfortable to live in. It’s a great test subject for trying new things and to see what time-saving hacks are worth it or not! You obviously have the skill set to rip everything out and create something amazing and super custom, but that’s not the purpose of this airstream right now - people need to chill 😅
I understand the reasoning, but this is also a RUclips channel. He's not just a flipper. People tune in to see enjoyable content.
@@andrews602az You're right, free content to watch - "enjoyable" is in the eye of the beholder. Maybe people's expectations are off because of "renovation" being in the title, but if this was titled "Testing cheap renovating hacks so you don't have to" the comments would be SO different haha. The quality of this video is the same as all of his other videos - good editing and sound, showing the whole process, talking about what went right and wrong, what he learned, etc. I come here to learn - not for perfection and that's exactly what was delivered even if the skills in this video weren't totally mastered - that's how everyone learns.
Yeah delayed by only 1 week. I would have waited. Maybe a temporary install unfinished and then epoxy it once the supplies arrive. Instead it looks like shit and won't have any durability and he'll have to redo it anyway. 1 week's wait is really not worth jumping the gun and settling for wallpaper countertops.
The trailer is definitely starting to look pretty good, and those led lights look like a game changer
Cheesey
Such a great job
Guys remember he just purchased his first investment property
It's a temporary trailer home people. He needs to get to work on the investment property, not make the trailer Instagram ready.
Too busy hate counter tops couldn’t wait a week? Plus peel and stick tiles better for kitchen
Good job overall. But i don't think you understand what 'mid-century modern" means.
ETA: do you really mean to discuss how thick the wallpaper is in millimeters or in mils?
I do not want to be a negative, but what gave you done? Wallpapers? At least you could remove the old ones. Cabinets? Old wood is nice, but you put zero effort into improving the cabinets ... I could continue all day long.
My whole 3 bedroom house has less lighting fixtures.
