- Opportunity to hunt mule deer, during the rut, can be such a rarity. As an Oregon resident, I have spent over 18-years accruing preference points and still have not yet successfully drawn a late season mule deer tag!
Naturally, Arizona's over the counter - late season mule deer hunt has always peaked my interest. However, the long drive and lack of knowledge prevented me from taking-on such a hunt.
Now that I have gone, I cannot wait to return! I just needed a buddy to tell me that I needed to go! Therefore, this film is intended to encourage you, the viewer, to go!

Incredible! I made a back strap dinner plate with Axis deer, blacktail, and that AZ buck. Cooked all the same way. And did a blind test on my wife and hands down the mule deer was the best. I made elk and that AZ buck for my in-laws and they were blown away at the flavor of the mule deer.

An I hope I can get it done this week . 80 yards what a great shot . I have never taken a buck with a bow . Your a better Hunter than me I could only imagine what you could get with a rifle . Actually, I got my first deer with a rifle last weekend and I plan to post that film this week!!! It was a washington blacktail hunt and I had to use a rifle for that tag 🤷🏼♂️.
Props, that is a hard hunt. I managed to snag a coues buck on my first OTC in AZ adventure, but it was a major PITA. Hoping to knock a big desert mulie down this year!

I bet you have some good memories down there. I think my favorite aspect of the hunt is the ability to soak up sun, without wearing a shirt, and yet be able to watch a mule deer rut at the same time! It’s incredible haha!

Arizona was challenging and I was pretty invested in making it happen. I’m from Oregon and have good luck with blacktail but hunting the desert with a lot of deer grouped up made getting close a difficult task.
Do you bow hunt down in Arizona?

Buck fever is awesome but can be hard to control some times . I have been getting better at it the little bucks can still give me the fever . So I'd have buck fever on a big boy like that . Good for you brother . I hope you got a big one this season .

Nice buck, those wide open places are tough, good thinking killing it right above the road! Hunt smarter not harder.

Pretty lucky to spot those deer above a road. Almost slid off that road turning around but managed to hold things together in the old Taco.

Haha! Thank you! What now do you shoot? I’ve been shooting a Mathews bow for most of my hunting years so I guess it’s a comfort deal. My dad owns an archery shop too so that helps.

I shoot a Mathews vxr and also a prime black one. Like both bows so much, that I couldn’t pick one lol.
But killed a buck last year with the Mathews vxr. Such a quiet, smooth shooting bow.

I'm in San Diego D16 an I rifle hunt . I have had 4 opertunitys to shoot some small 2x2 but I'm holding out for a mature buck . This Thursday I'm going to an area I know that should be good . I hope I can find a big boy like the one you got . 🤞

Haha! It made it as number two on the shortest pack out ever list. My first buck, the spike on the hill, died in the road so that will be difficult to top.
Nice job, great video. It's tough to stay positive when it's not going the way you plan. Some of the nicest bucks I've killed have been on the last day after grinding it out. Way to stick with it!

So did you buy 7 tags for the 7 units that you hunted? How does that work?
Hi Chris. Some states offer over the counter opportunity (otc). Oregon, where I am from, is one of those states. The hunting regulations state which units are open for hunting with the general archery tag and most in AZ are open in January.

Arizona actually has tons of water, you just have to find it.
When you find the water you will find the deer.
Oh exactly! It was such a bad drought last winter and all the typical spots were a little dry.

Man alway brave decision to move spots. Personally, I have a hard time leaving deer I can see to move to a place where there maybe better/more deer. I'm bit coward that way lol. Subscribing was easy decision and I'm looking forward to browsing your other videos. Just a top job mate.
Thank you! Appreciate your comment. The good thing about winter is the shorter days, so I was able to not burn too much daylight when hopping around. Also, I had never been to AZ before so I really wanted to scout during the hunt. Basically, I totally get what your saying.

Whats with the phone picture frame thing?
That’s a good question. My intent is to only use high quality film but with deer being nearly a half mile away I was using phone scope. Therefore, the transparent shape of a phone means the film is from my phone. I’ve seen multiple ways of doing this with edits and I figured this was a creative way to share that film.

Great video, how did this hunt match up to your expectations of AZ OTC hunting? Was it harder than expected?
Good question!
I really didn’t have a clue what to expect. I’ve only hunted mule deer in Oregon and the deer population far exceeded that. I think the challenging aspect was seeing public land but not able to find access to it, seeing water on google earth, but there was no water, the ground cover was thicker than I realized, and if the deer were not rutting in an area then the daytime activity was extremely limited. Also, I was very surprised at all of the forked antler bucks I saw!
@@NathanEndicott_Films yeah any time you come to AZ make sure you check your maps access issues will get ya . 2020 wasn't good to us with rain so everything was dry and I felt like the rut happened a little later than normal this year .
@@PointsWestOutdoors my favorite part of the hunt was the break from the cold, wet, and humid winter weather in Oregon. Yet, deer were rutting down there! Typically, nice weather and rut do not go together. Mule deer are just such beautiful deer and I can’t wait to learn more and see new places down there. AZ is huge!

What unit was that?
It was an OTC unit in 2021. There are deer everywhere in AZ. Just have to enjoy the process of looking. Are you from AZ? Have you been on that hunt?

I was in NM this past September on a filmed elk hunt and it’s a beautiful state! I really want to get down there with a deer tag soon!
I was sleeping out of my truck. Worked great but it was a little cold when the outside temps dropped to 8-degrees 🥶

Yep, that’s chilly. I don’t want to try to pull too much out here but if you were anywhere in the southern border units, we’re there any issues with camping?
I hunted border units for years here in NM and only had one situation but it was enough.

I applied for controlled hunts in 2021. Do you mean AZFW is taking away OTC archery opportunities in 2023?

No, they are going to a threshold harvest program in 2023 and allowing 10% of the tag quota to non resident hunters. So it will be a mandatory harvest reporting program and the season will close only when the harvest quota has been reached.
@@jonahmosher3314 if you read my note it doesn't say when it says they are goin g to a draw and at some point they will as with the system there going to test yes it's a test that will fail due to people being dishonest so there you have it and it's not if they go it's when they go to a draw .
