    I moved boats for almost 10 years back in the early 80s out here on the west coast from southern California all the way into Canada and east to lake Havasu power boats ,sail boats , wood , steel ,fiberglass .pleasure work and navel my truck and trailer was 75 foot long fixed length with a mast i could be over 85 foot long .I loved my job . best story one time i moved a 42 foot Catalina when i got to the delivery point the owner climbed on board before off loading then came back out and told me she had left a glass of wine on the counter and it was still standing when i got there over a 1,000 miles later .

      I was loading up a car to move from the house to the shop.. Just a pickup and a regular little old car trailer.. Started drinking beers with the neighbor across the fence..
      .
      Got up in the morning, and took off to the shop, 25ish miles... Get out of my truck, and there is an empty beer can sitting on the corner of my bumper.. Empty Empty, not an inch or 2 of liquid, empty empty, the kind of empty that gets knocked around in a 4mph breeze.. No idea how it stayed there.

    I recently retired after 40 years of trucking 24 of those years were open deck high, wide or heavy. I gotta say this video gave me a little anxiety or ptsd😂 Lousy permits, poor routing, customers that had no clue regarding sizes, access and how to get what was on my trailer off. It didn’t happen a lot but this video gave me flashbacks😂

      Doing a very quick look at the boat, I'd check the thru-hull fittings, scupper lines, power wash it, apply some VC-17, and sail it. Few tubes of marine silicone, four quarts of VC-17, the cost to step the mast, and some elbow grease.
      What do you see that I don't on a fifty plus year old boat?

    I grew up on a small grain farm, 3000 acres my dad had some help eventually by 9 or 10 I was picking rocks. I always wanted to be out with my dad, and I got to be. Eventually I got to be out working together with him, drive grain truck while he combines or whatever.
    My point is my man, I am happy for your boy and you that you can bring your kid to work, show him what a hard days work looks like, that if you love it that it will work out. So many kids grow up with dads who either are entirely absent or work long hours, we all do these days. Good on you man, your boy will be a better man for spending time with you, you seem like a good guy, don't let your blood pressure get up and spaz when many would. Just saying, thought of my dad and me sitting in the cab of the combine or tractor, can't put a dollar amount on those early lessons from my dad.

    Interesting video. I went through the same thing back in the late 90's as a new boat owner. I bought a distressed sailboat and paid to have it hauled out and delivered to my parents farm for DIY overhaul. After a few years, I sentenced that 1974 Columbia 22' sloop to the landfill. It couldn't be helped because it sat on boat stands so long, the fiberglass hull was giving way at the support points. For some reason, I thought spending time with a new girlfriend was a better idea than working on the boat.

    Depending on the interior condition, that boat isn't terrible. There's some gelcoat cracking on the white section (not terrible), the keel fairing is in good shape. The lower/blue section is VC-17, and it's "ablating" as it's designed to.
    The topside looks like it needs a good powerwash, and it's serviceable.
    As long as the stay brackets and the deck plates are in good shape, I'd sail that. Not a fan of the outside stay brackets, but if it's lived this long sailing, I'm sure the engineering is fine. Just seems to not be very slick, if you're heeled over a ton.
    The bad news is, it's an older design keel/boat, it won't point great. Won't resell for much. It's a pleasure sailer, at best. It will be continuous money, but what hobby isn't.
    Enjoy the boat; sunsets always look better on a sailboat!

    • @jonathanjenkins4742
      @jonathanjenkins4742 Месяц назад

      Will cost a minimum of $40,000 to get it fixed up, then annual costs each year ... engine repairs, rigging, sails, electronics, all gear such as anchors etc, lights, zincs, annual check-ups with new zincs, hull ablative painting, keel bolts, fiberglass repairs, and on and on. We had a 40 footer and it cost us at least this per year to keep it in shape.

    • @andrewb4584
      @andrewb4584 Месяц назад

      @@jonathanjenkins4742 You base your estimate on what hull survey? Pure speculation.
      If it's just mildew on the decking, you can powerwash it in a few hours. $25 in gas and detergent. Few gallons of roll-off a year to keep it nice.
      Engine repairs may/may not be needed.
      Rigging ages, sure, but how do you know when the halyards were last replaced? Stays, control lines, etc. Neither of us have a clue.
      Electronics aren't needed to sail. Desirable? Sure, needed, no... My single hander (a Pearson 26) has a inop speed indicator (the LCD display died, the sender still works; I could fix it for $10 from DigiKey, I don't need to), and a depth gauge. You don't need electronics. The windex requires sunglasses on bright days, and telltales to dial the sail shape in. What else do you need?
      My First 40.7 has a full suite; most of the time, I don't use them to sail.
      Anchors, lights, etc... Light bulbs are cheap. Anchor chain/line? Really? Zincs? Annual checkups?
      The VC-17, I apply myself. Acetone to thin it and moon suit from Home Depot. Chip brushes. Buy an appropriate amount from West Marine, call it a day.
      Sails? Maybe. Get out on the water, fly them. Even a stretched sail will still move a boat. The Beneteau has good sails; the Pearson had junk, it got me out and away from life just the same, and who cared if I lost two-tenths of a knot. I race the 40.7, most folks don't. Old sails, unless they're severely UV compromised will work just fine.
      His biggest fees will be haul in/out, and dock/mooring/off-season storage fees. The rest? I'd just sail the boat. Geat a BoatUS towing policy (mine is like $120/y) Keep her close to land until you can figure out the boat (and learn to sail.)
      Again, lots of supposition, I'd check the scuppers/through hulls/clean her up and toss it in.
      To quote Captain Ron, a sailor for the ages, "If it's going to happen, it'll happen out there", not armchair guessing on costs from most likely hundreds of miles away.
      Again, the boat looks structurally sound. Get a survey, and toss it in the water.

    • @jonathanjenkins4742
      @jonathanjenkins4742 Месяц назад

      @@andrewb4584 How about liability insurance, gov't required (state and federal) registration fees and proper documentation, coast guard required safety gear and any CG inspection fees and fines (they always seem to find something), required state taxes, to say nothing of the marina slip rental and annual haul out and on and on ... we've owned a number of different boats and four different airplanes, and the boats were by far more expensive to own and operate.
      Love the Boat US towing policy (cost was just over $100 / yr) (we used it every year at least once - don't leave home without it) Did the Great Loop, and up and down the ICW many years and 10 winters in the Bahamas...
      Many people fall in love with the IDEA of the boating life, but the reality is much different when it comes to the expense of owning and operating.... good luck and wish them well... it will be an adventure, just hope they have deep pockets.

    2-Turn off the truck if you are going to record dialog. A lot of the conversation with the owners was probably interesting, but it couldn't be heard.

    The amount of soda he consumes is crazy . He walks around with the biggest cup circle k has ....

      If the family does it together. It's a lot easier for the boy to learn.
      If the parents are overweight and consume sugars like soda by the case, it's not going to change.
      I was 100# overweight.
      I got diabetes, stage 2.
      So I quit drinking sodas, lots of high sugar content foods.
      Then I started walking and climbing stairs.
      After 1 year, I lost the 100# and my A1C dropped.
      My doctor asked me what I did.
