Hi Gail, I was missing your videos!!! Thank you for this great tips!!!
+Valentina Sforzini that's so sweet of you to say!! I will try to make more videos soon! Let me know how they grey-making goes 😁
Perhaps a better work rather than gray, since I always see GRAY, is neutral. Thanks for your cheerful delivery.
Gail, would you mind doing a segment on how to see value in color please? Thank you so very much
Carol, why not send me a more detailed (but not toooo long) email and then I can do a Q&A video on it!
Hello Gail! I have been watching your videos nonstop these days and I have learned a lot. Thank you for your guidance. I have a question to ask about layering. Right now I have a set of 30 pastels from sennelier and I’m having so much fun using them, but layering kind of kills the colors vibrancy in the process. Is it necessary to have more pastels or is it possible to create every color from a basic set just like with the oil paints? If it’s possible why do some brands try to offer every color possible. Would you suggest me to get a complementary set just in case?
Thanks.very good,🤗🌹
Would you ever layer 3 colors to make your greys? I ask this as a watercolor artist because I use the 3 primary colors (R, B & Y)...to mix my greys. Well...I guess I DO mix just 2 colors(a primary and a secondary) sometimes. The LAYERING part of pastels is what I haven't quite learned. I don't do much layering or glazing in my watercolor style. I let the colors blend on the paper...it's very loose. You are a WONDERFUL teacher....with a funny sense of humor, too! Thanks so much.
Definitely! I layer colours to grey them down and also pop them. I may end up layering three four or more layers!!
I'd suggest working with pressure. That makes all the difference. Layer with a light and gentle hand. A good sanded surface also helps!
Thank you for making this video, and all of your videos! I look to your videos on RUclips frequently for inspiration. They create such an enthusiasm in me to let go of my rigid ideas of color and be more free and experimental. I have watched all of your videos multiple times and will continue to do so until I have absorbed every last bit of instruction from them.
+Tamie Ley that's the loveliest compliment!! It certainly motivates me to make more videos. Is there anything you would like to see a video about? Do you have a question I might be able to answer in a Q&A vid?
I believe my main struggle at the moment is the handling of edges. You appear to seamlessly handle your edges and it make me quite envious! I find it amazing you can do this with a limited palette and get it right every time. Do you have an edge plan ahead of time or do you just work it out intuitively?
Thanks for the question Tamie! Can you email me directly and give me more info on your question? And then I may do a video answering it! And to answer your question quickly, I don't have an edge plan but then again, maybe I actually do... How's that for being slippery :-)
that was really cool!!
Really good exercise. Very useful.... using this is the only way to make true colors really pop. One of the first lessons I learned with pastels was to never forget the Greys. Thanks so much for the great video.
Thanks so much for the lovely comment MT! When I first started in art, I was all about the intense colours but as I moved along my art journey I really got the notion about the usefulness of greys. Just as you've said.
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Am I the only one mesmerized by the shapes of the overexposed greens outside that window?
Hah hah!!
Great lesson:-) I love colors and need to learn to trust my " playfulness " , your monthly emails are so precious to me :-) thanks a lot!
That's such a lovely thing to say - thank you!! Yes, play can lead to all sorts of amazing things. Let go and see what happens. And enjoy using those colours!
Love everything u did and do … why grey tho?
Why make greys? Because we sometimes need neutrals- beautiful colourful neutrals - in our work.
thumbs up
🙏
I can understand what you're doing here, but I'm like the other lady. I have a solid grey wall sorta med dark.
Hah hah. Gotta love greys!
Loved this video, I’m going to create the chart! Thank you 😊.
Great!! I think it will be super helpful. Let me know how it goes!
Thank you! Love your videos. So much great information on these.
Thanks so much Dale. I love hearing they are helpful!
What a great exercise Gail. I'm going to try this for sure, it will give me a far better understand of color mixing. Thank you for sharing
That's great to hear Carol. It's a hugely satisfying exercise to do!
