5 years later and finally found a video explaining everything. For years I had to have the chat volume on my mixamp all the way up just to hear my friends talk, at a cost to the surround sound quality of the game. For a while I thought it was my outdated gen 1 tech not working with the Xbox One. I wish the instructions on the adapter came with such clear explanations. Thank you for making this.
I'm so horribly annoyed they changed the 2.5mm jack ONLY to sell these stupid adapters. Especially since the mixamp does game/chat EQ anyway. Good explanation though!
@@god6057 No it's not, the official audio adapters are like $39 and aftermarket ones are still like $30. New Xbox one controllers are $35-40 for a basic white or black one. Spending like $10-15 more to avoid the adapter is fine by me

I have literally been trying to figure this out for 3-5years! I just accepted that I had to change the volume settings of whatever game I was playing so that I could hear my party chat and just suffer with no game volume (it made shooters really fun...). Don't know how I finally found this video but thank goodness I did. Thank you!

nat great, probably a bit late, but it depends on the headset and controller. if your controller has the 3,5mm jack built it, then no, but if it doesnt then you do unless its an xbox one basic headset. if your headset as its own volume controls then you wont need it either if you can plug it straight into the controller

Genesis Rider I know I'm late but what was the wire you connect to the adaptor which you then connect to your headset called because I tried plugging beats intomonly the adaptor and I would only hear game audio and not voice chat
It's so weird that MS didn't add that into the manual. I previously always had gaming headsets with a mic that had chat and game volume knobs included so I never needed to know what those two buttons on the stereo adapter did until I bought real headphones. Nice video.

Thank you, I got a G230 Logitech, a spliter cable and the xbox adapter. I was frustrated when i couldn't hear my games. This video helped me understand the adapter a little better in the midst of the Christmas excitement of my new headset. My Girlfriend usually sleeps in a Saturdays and i hate playing Xbox in the living room because it wakes her. With this tip i was able to play while she slept peacefully.

what a great detailed explanation dude. I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to use this thing. I was even holding down each one on the left, then pressing the main volume buttons to try and mix it to how i wanted. Its shocking that nothing about this was mentioned in the manual. Good job explaining this, the main issue i have with it is that my microphone is not working at all, I checked my settings and everything. My mic was unmuted, the adapter had my mic unmuted tried a few different headphones it just wont work
Ok i've been using the adapter the wrong way the entire time. . I always thought the game and mic button on the left was like a toggle. You hit the game icon, then use +/- to adjust game volume, and same thing for the Microphone when it comes to chat. I've been wrong and that explains why the audio mix has always been so terrible! Thanks!

omg, this was SO HELPFUL!!! I was having a problem where game sounds were REALLY LOUD and chat was way too quiet. So I was turning the game volume down in game...but when I was soloing and unplugged my headset, I had to adjust the volume again. It was so frustrating. I think this will solve everything! THANKS!!!

I also thought the other buttons meant adding controllers/friends (found out that was not the case while playing Halo 5, as I could not hear friends voices and only effects). The new version of the Bose has a mic built in (not sure about the older versions), so I'm still able to talk to my friends online. Plus they're extremely comfortable!

Off-topic...I've been thinking of updating to the newest Mixamp Pro TR or A50 wireless...any thoughts on that? Would it be worth the upgrade from my dated equipment?
100% worth upgrading to the newest A50 wireless. Godlike headset as long as you are using the right EQ presets (I've had mine for years and the battery is still a beast on one charge). No, you don't need the chat adapter if you have a controller with a 3.5mm jack. The best part about the new Astro A50s? No wire to your controller. You literally just plug the base-station directly into your console and your Xbox will "read" the base-station as a device and automatically send the chat audio to your headset without the need for the extra cable plugged into your controller. So nice.

+jucci178 to be honest I miss my PS4. Maybe because this is my first Xbox, but I miss the touch pad in the center of the controller, the speaker in the controller, and the six axis of the ps4 while I didn't use often was kind of fun to use every now and then. However, deal I found on the Xbox 1($200) and the fact that most of my friends play on the Xbox is mainly why I switched and what will keep me.

I've been playing games for the past year with deafeningly loud game volume drowning out my chat volume... I hope that you showed me the answer. I always assumed that the Controller and Person buttons selected game chat or volume chat, and that the volume buttons would then mix that specific channel up or down. If the fix is as simple as just holding down the party chat button until i hear a beep, i will cry tears of joy.

This is a great video for the explanation! I was thinking of getting this because I recently got an xbox one but am only able to play it on a 55 inch tv that even with game mode I still got display lag. So I only have a 16 inch monitor that only has DVI in thus not letting me use sound through any other cable. So this adapter will definitely let me play on my monitor.

There is another cord that comes with the adapter, then plug that cable into the adapter, and then plug the headphones into the other cord.

Thanks for the video. I have a similar setup to yours where I have a legacy Mixamp Pro. Do I even need the chat adapter if I have a controller with the 3.5mm jack? Off-topic...I've been thinking of updating to the newest Mixamp Pro TR or A50 wireless...any thoughts on that? Would it be worth the upgrade from my dated equipment?
100% worth upgrading to the newest A50 wireless. Godlike headset as long as you are using the right EQ presets (I've had mine for years and the battery is still a beast on one charge). No, you don't need the chat adapter if you have a controller with a 3.5mm jack. The best part about the new Astro A50s? No wire to your controller. You literally just plug the base-station directly into your console and your Xbox will "read" the base-station as a device and automatically send the chat audio to your headset without the need for the extra cable plugged into your controller. So nice.

Maybe because this is my first Xbox, but I miss the touch pad in the center of the controller, the speaker in the controller, and the six axis of the ps4 while I didn't use often was kind of fun to use every now and then. However, deal I found on the Xbox 1($200) and the fact that most of my friends play on the Xbox is mainly why I switched and what will keep me.

Are your controller batteries fully charged? Are all your connections solidly plugged into their appropriate ports?

I've been playing games for the past year with deafeningly loud game volume drowning out my chat volume... I hope that you showed me the answer.
I always assumed that the Controller and Person buttons selected game chat or volume chat, and that the volume buttons would then mix that specific channel up or down. If the fix is as simple as just holding down the party chat button until i hear a beep, i will cry tears of joy.

This is a great video for the explanation! I was thinking of getting this because I recently got an xbox one but am only able to play it on a 55 inch tv that even with game mode I still got display lag. So I only have a 16 inch monitor that only has DVI in thus not letting me use sound through any other cable. So this adapter will definitely let me play on my monitor.
